  1. I'm glad somebody raised this issue. I know I've experienced some confusion recently about what exactly what considered "defense" of another alliance. I guess what it boils down to is whether a counter-attack by your victim's MDP partners means that they are now the aggressors. I'm still not exactly sure what to think

  2. I think for another great war to occur we'd need a large, well-connected alliance to do something divisive but not reprehensible. If they're not big enough, not well-connected enough, or do something that clearly warrants destruction like spying, then there's only going to be one well-defined side: the dogpile. I'd say that last ingredient is the toughest to come by, since there aren't many politically/morally neutral points of conflict in CN. Competition for senate seats is about the only thing I can think of.

  3. It was written that one day he would ascend to the heavens. Do not fear, however, for one day he shall return, like a thief in the night, and take all those faithful with him to paradise.

lol exactly. Admin will check the banned player list in 3 days and find that Walford is no longer there! :awesome:

  4. Walford's idea of mutual defense without clear alliance affiliation makes more sense if you've read [ooc]The Art of War[/ooc] and understand the idea of formlessness. I think the point he's making is that, even if you're a strong alliance and, hell, even if you're close to the CN power center, you can still easily be wiped out if the group turns against you. Publicizing your strength with an AA, diplomacy etc. actually increases your risk in some ways by 1) letting people know exactly how much strength you have and 2) increasing your profile. If you're in a loser configuration of technically unaffiliated nations, then people 1) don't have any idea how much military support you have, 2) won't be as aware of your existence, and 3) won't have any CB to take you out as a part of a wider campaign against a whole alliance due to a perceived offense by a single member.

Did I get that right, Walford?

  5. lol, fatal error.

I would recommend selling technology to larger nations, or joining a major alliance that hands out a lot of aid. You can also make in-game money by donating real money to the game in the name of a larger nation. People wil also pay for trades if you've got good resources. Other than that you've mostly just got to do the daily grind.

    :)

  6. I was thinking the same thing the other day. It seems like the trend is for people to leave an established alliance to start their own little projects, while I would think it would be more prudent to gather together small alliances and make them into a larger cohesive unit. Perhaps those people would rather be the supreme ruler of an insignificant alliance, whereas I would much rather be a little cog in a big machine that does some cool stuff.

Totally agree. Considering the current state of CN power distribution (read: concentration) as well as the fact that there should be an alliance for just about everyone at this point, it makes no sense to be starting new alliances unless you've got a really defined purpose. I guess it really is just the desire to be a big fish in a small pond. I'd much rather have the world trend towards consolidation into 20 - 50 major powers so politics would be more high impact.

  7. If we disregard almost everything that has happened in the past, I can create a pretty interesting alternative history scenario.

That is exactly the kind of thing I'd like to see. I can't keep up with all these newfangled alliances and MDP webs. It'd be a lot of fun if we could coalesce into unified color team blocs. Forming treaties would be so much more high stakes if there were just 12 sides.

  8. o/ LEN!

Thanks to all for the warm welcome and congratulations. As the outgoing LCS Consul, I'm excited about our future as new members of LEN. We're looking forward to getting to know you guys better, as well as our new allies across Planet Bob.

  9. I completely agree about OOC attacks crossing the line and taking fun away from CN, but I'm also impressed at how detached some people sound about this being "just a game." My nation isn't quite a year old, but I've watched it grow day by day that whole time and I definitely have a real emotional attachment to it. When someone acts like a jerk in CN it doesn't really matter much to me whether they're a jerk OOC or just IC, because we devote a real part of our lives to this and their actions therefore have real consequences.
