Larsa's Debt...Sarah's Promise

Larsa was nearly choking on his own words. "Nordic Chancellor Zamoyski.....was the one to slay my brother..in front of his own family. Not only that, but Mikhail...was taken. Not by an Einherjar, but by someone else. We never found him."

Sarah's eyes were wet with tears by the end of Larsa's words. She jumped from the chair ran over and embraced him. "Larsa I'm so sorry. I didn't want to bring up things that were so, so hard for you. Larsa if I can do anything to find your nephew I will. I wouldn't know where to start, but if you help me I will make it my personal mission to get him back, even if it means going off to find him on my own."

--------------------

It had almost been two years since Larsa and Sarah had had dinner in the Solidor farmhouse on a dark winter's eve and she still remembered those words that he had told her and no matter how he smiled, no matter how happy he seemed living in Brisbane, Sarah knew all too well that Larsa's life was missing something. Now it was Sarah who was feeling extremely empty. Her husband had been in a Canadian hospital for over three weeks now and the most she had heard from either him or Canadian officials was that 'things were going well'. That was it, no personal letter, no letter providing her weak body with any solace, just the insecurity that she may in fact never get to see his face stare back and hers again.

She had left Brisbane early in the morning and boarded a plane heading towards The Northern Empire. Before the collapse of the government there, someone had sent word that they possessed something extremely important to both Larsa and Sarah. When the message had arrived in Sarah's office she was at a loss on how to interpret it, however when she had talked about it to Larsa over dinner that evening he knew exactly what it meant and knew at that moment that Mikhail was alive. He was set to leave for the Empire early the next morning. But it was that night that he had succumbed to the pneumonia and by the next day he was being transported to Canada. In her anguish and desire now to somehow join her broken family together again, it was Sarah who sat on the plane in Larsa's stead. She had sent a message to the leaders of the new government in the Northern Empire to come not as a politician or ambassador, but as a concerned Aunt, or a concerned Mother.

As the plane began to descend down to the runway at Hoosville Airport, Sarah gripped tightly the message in her left and wrapped her pink scarf tightly around her neck before getting up from the seat. Disembarking from the plane she found the inside of the airport abandoned for now, but she hoped that officials would arrive soon to point her in the right direction. She was one a mission of her own now and nothing anyone would say or do would turn her back.

Everything seemed to be happening as usual in the Airport at first, it seemed as if she had come all the way to there for nothing after all, but later when she was being handed some of her luggage, something would have been different. The man in charge of the luggage whispered before leaving her with the bags in Nordlandic,

"Den hvem Godleik Einerun findun vill maast zi Lichtbringerun fahrun."

(Those who want to find the one that is like god must travel to the Lightbringer)

It was unusual to hear that language in this part of the world. But the way he said it and worded it, he definately was meaning something. The Nordmann walked away, not wishing for her to get a chance to respond of ask anything.

Unfortunately for either Sarah or the Nordman, the curiosity of the young woman had always outweighed any degree of her safety. Something that had gotten in her in trouble time after time again. "Herr! Wartezeit! Kommen Sie zurück! Bitte! Können sie mir helfen?" Sarah wasn't exactly fluent in Nordlandic and she hoped that the man would be able to get the gist of what she was saying. ("Sir! Wait! Come back! Please! Can you help me?") Sarah bounded off her chair and ran towards the Nordman who was walking away, almost tripping over her bags as she did so.

"Lichtbringerunsplatz?" Sarah said to herself as she watched the Nordlander run off down the hallway of the airport. Sighing she went back to her seat and wanted another hour for the Communists to come and escort her to where she would find Mikhail, but as the day turned to the frozen night she began to lose hope to ever seen any of the government officials and even less to see Mikhail. Collapsing her head into her hands she closed her eyes and thought about falling into a sleep. "Lichtbringerunsplatz." She said again. It sounded familiar, as if she had heard it somewhere before, but she couldn't tell where. Before sleep could take hold of her body Sarah took out her cell phone and connected to the wi-fi service in the hospital. Typing the word in Sarah's eyes lit up and the mystery, or at least this part of the adventure was solved. Getting up out of the seat, she stretched, yawned and picking up her bags walked down to another booth to purchase yet another ticket. She would be returning to Europe now, not the homeland, but close to. Sarah was heading for Nordheim.

It was another long plane ride, she lost track after the first twelve hours, everything else was just a blur as she drifted in and out of consciousness. To be honest, Sarah hadn't expected to be running all around the world for this, but the Nordlander had taken her on an unexpected turn and she was anxious to land in Nordheim. She had been there once before, about a year ago, but it had been a brief visit and had been ruined by the Tsar of Molakia's constant insults to her and the Hanseatic nation. She hoped now that she would be able to appreciate the visit a bit more, even if the country was still clouded in a cloak of mystery. There had always been this romantic mystery about the Scandinavian states and she still missed Europe, so as the landing strip came in sight, Sarah sat on the edge of her seat to come back into the fold that was Scandinavia. With her head lightly pressed against the window, she could feel the cold air gently touching her face and there was no better feeling in the world.

Stepping off the plane, she strung the baggage over her body and walked nimbly out towards the gates of the airport to enter the city of Asgard proper. At the terminal, she was stopped by Nordheim guards asking for the necessary traveling passes. Passport, Identification Card, other things necessary for successful diplomatic transfer and she she handed them over, Sarah laughed quietly to herself. The Lady Protector of the Hansa, seeming to come into the country as if on vacation.

The guards bow respectfully and then hand the ID back.

"Welcome to Asgaard, Lady Protector. It is a honor to have you here."

Asgaard's walls were massive, encompassing the entire city, only the tallest of structures could be seen from outside, but from her perspective the walls seemed even more gigantic, as if it was the end of a world and the start of another. The gate was also simply massive, silver and gold adorned it - and the walls - in different parts. One would expect such a gate to open very slowly, but it only took a few seconds to open enough to let her and several other people who were queued behind inside. The city seemed to be made of the precious metals, and was built in a mix of Scandinavian and German Architecture. Many people, almost all in uniforms, walked through the area, armored vehicles and tanks were also seen moving.

Over in the distance, there was a massive statue, so big that it could be seen from afar from the outside of Asgaard, and even bigger than that was the Palace of the Aesir, crowned by a massive Odal Rune. A small group of 30 soldiers in formation passed nearby, marching, it didn't seem like a real place, it seemed more like a fairytale mixed with the old Wehrmacht.

The gate closes. There was a large city map to her left. Her journey continues.

Letting those who were behind her pass by Sarah walked up to the city map and tried to take the geography of the city in before she headed to her destination, not that it would be that difficult to arrive, Sarah's destination literally sprawled out into the Nordic sky in front of her. Turning back to face the city Sarah adjusted the bag slung over her shoulder and began to walk down the street further into the city. When she had talked about the mysticism of the north, Sarah had only really been prevalent to the magic of Helsinki or maybe certain cities in Franzharia. Asgard was something completely different. There was definitely a hint of militarism in the air, but for some reason she didn't mind, she wasn't afraid, in fact she felt a little red boil beginning in her heart after walking past a squadron of soldiers dressed in the traditional Nordlandic uniforms. It was an age of chivalry that still was living in the North.

Her mind drifted as she walked down the street further, taking in the architecture and the environment itself. A light snow had begun to fall from the sky and she pulled the pink scarf a little tighter around her neck as a Nordheim couple strolled up the street, smiling at the young girl and wishing her a good night before turning in to a small apartment on the side. Indeed it was a little girl's fairytale dream and she was extremely happy to know that places like Asgard still existed in Europe. Since the Exodus, she had tried to shun the whole of Europe out of her mind, but truly the calling of her homeland still had a strong pull on her as she finally came to the ending of the second part of her adventure.

Passing another row of houses, most likely belonging to the Nordheim elite, as the windows almost glistened in the moonlight she came to a large park that opened up and in the center of the park was the destination the Nordlander had told her to go. The Lichtbringerunsplatz, the great statue of Martens that loomed in front of her tiny person.

The park was abandoned at this time of night and she hoped that whomever the Nordlander had spoken to her about was awaiting her arrival, but those thoughts were quickly dashed away as the massive stone statue ran up to the darkened sky. Sarah never had the chance to meet the man personally, whose namesake men around the world revered and feared. She was not a Martenist per se, but she knew of him, she respected what he had done and she had fought for his country in the Nordlandic War many years ago. Coming to the base of the statue, her head was tilted up trying to take in the great monument. "That is true immortality, nothing short of changing the world forever." She said staring up in the silent snow.

Týr happened to approach the area, announced by the sounds of his boots against the solid polished rock floor, wearing a simple black uniform with only a few insignias on it. He approaches from the side, stopping at a distance, at the feet of the statue...looking towards her, as if trying to see if it really was her. Yes, it had to be...he continues walking until he is within her line of sight.

"It is inspiring, is it not?"

Sarah had been too enthralled with looking up to the sky to hear the footsteps approach her and when Tyr's soft voice wafted into her ears the young woman jumped for a moment turning in surprise to see the Lord of Nordheim staring back at her. His eyes were a piercing lavender in the night and they showed out of the dark like two amethyst, illuminated underneath the dark of his cap. Quickly overcoming her immediate fear, Sarah straightened herself back up and bowed her head. "Your Excellency, it is an honor to see you again." She had only met Tyr once before, at a meeting of various foreign leaders to tour the newly declared nation of Nordheim. It had been a quick visit, but enlightening nonetheless as Sarah had found much of the policies of Nordheim, though perhaps ancient in tradition were very prevalent to modern politics while innovative to domestic and foreign policy and that had garnered her an utmost respect of the people and their leader.

Rising up again to face Tyr's stare, she smiled and blew a line of steam into the cold northern air. "Forgive me for coming to your country like this Your Excellency, it is more in my custom to come as a state visit, but I'm afraid I am not coming as a politician or diplomat or any of the sort this time." She sighed. "To be honest Excellency, I didn't even expect to be in Nordheim at all, I was in the Northern Empire only a day ago looking for someone who is very dear to my husband, however I was completely ignored by the Communists that have taken over the country there. However when I was in the airport, a man that spoke the dialect of this region told me..." She reached back into her mind. "Den hvem Godleik Einerun findun vill maast zi Lichtbringerun fahrun." Looking up at the statue once again, it sent shivers down Sarah's spine. "It is inspiring, one of the great testaments to leadership in the world today. But maybe you can help me why die he send me here? And why you are here on this cold night?" She said softly, deep down she believed that Tyr had been waiting for her, but it was always unwise to assume things, but she also felt there was much more going on that she could possibly understand with her present knowledge.

"No need for formalities. We're not in duty. And there's certainly no Molakians to worry about. Both the night and the guest are a display of beauty enough to let us forget the problems of Midgaard."

He sits down at a bench close by, and crosses one leg over the other, his eyes close for a moment only, and he removes his cap, placing it on his lap.

"Ahh. That is Nordlandic indeed. Many people come to the city of the Aesir looking for something. It has always been a fortress from the outer world. Many find what they were looking for. Others find unexpected peace."

He pauses, and then continues, "I think better out here in the night. I feel more at home out here than in the Palace or Bunker. The one who is like God. I see. You're looking for a person? Do you have a name? Maybe we can look him up in our records."

"Mikhail Solidor." Sarah said as she walked to the bench and sat besides Tyr. "Doing the Nordland War years ago, after Nordland had invaded Tion and then when the Northern Empire came in on the offensive chaos reigned supreme in the north. My own country was thown into its own revolution, but during this time Mikhail who was one of Larsa's nephews was stolen away from his family. They never found out who and we haven't heard anything until just recently. Though I would assume, since the Imperials were the fist to invite me to begin looking I assume that he was captured by the Imperials." She smiled. "But if maybe if Nordheim is the center of peace and solace like you've said it is, perhaps he has come here on his travels."

Sarah tilted her head back and sighed as closed her eyes tightly shut to keep the tears from forming. She chuckled for a moment, noting that this was the second time that Tyr had seen her in this pitiful state. "My apologies Milord, my emotions they always get the better of me. But if we could search for him here, it would mean so much to me. Larsa caught pneumonia a few days ago and he's been in Canada ever since getting treatment. It feels that my entire family is coming apart at the seems and that why this means so much to me." She took his hand in hers and smiled into his amethyst eyes. "This is the most hope that I've had during this entire ordeal, so anything that you can do to help me in this journy I would be most appreciated." The snow was still falling lightly above them as she took a lace handkerchief out from her pocket and dried her red nose. "It does really mean a lot to me Your Excellency and I hope this was the unexpected peace that you mentioned."

"Mikhail Solidor."

Týr leans back onto the bench, folding his arms behind his back. He seems a little worried for a moment.

"Mikhail is a Hebrew name. It means, "Who is like God?" So apparently you've been told you'd find him here among the city of Gods."

He reaches with an arm of his, putting it around her, patting one of her shoulders a few times, trying to make her feel better. He didn't seem too warm at touch, however...but it was still something. He watches the stars far from there, and speaks once more,

"There is no reason to cry, for I know what has happened to him. The Kaiser took care of little Mikhail himself. He is safe here in Nordheim. Your quest here has not been in vain....yet, I do hope that the ones that remain in the hospital find safety...such realms are out of our reach and influence..."

Edit: How old is Mikhail?

She smiled back, embracing the man in her arms. His touch was strange, but it was welcomed nonetheless. Putting her handkerchief away she released herself from the grip and took a deep breath. "Thank you very much for your kind words, I know that Larsa will be okay. He has been through worse than pneumonia, but the stress of the situation is hard to handle sometimes. But the fact that the Kaiser has taken care of him this entire time is the happiest thing that I have heard this entire time." She bounded off the bench and grabbed Tyr's hands tightly. "Please Your Excellency, please take me to him. I have never met the young man myself, but it would mean so much to me. I want to tell him that his family still exists and that perhaps it is time to start a new period of his life."

Realizing that her hands were digging into Tyr's arm, Sarah let go quickly and laughed lightly to herself. "My apologies Excellency. Please, lead the way."

He nods and stands up, with still an arm around her, smiling peacefully, not seeming to mind her more or less clinging onto him. It would have normally been humorous, if it wasn't for the nature of the situation at hand. He puts on his cap and begins to walk towards the east, saying no more for a while. Eventually they would enter what appeared to be some sort of labyrinth, it resembled a maze garden in its style but the spaces were broad enough to fit a car or a truck, as if streets, and it had walls of orange brick instead of plants. "Here, you'll find him at the center..."

This was weird, it seemed as if it was a dream. She looked towards her right as she saw a person in the distance walking, but then when she'd look to her left again towards Týr, he would simply not be there. She could hear that he had ran off in a certain direction, but the 90 degree turns of the maze would not make things clear. What was going on? Only stars and the moon above could know for sure.

She was alone, alone in the dark, with the strange orange glow coming out of the bricks surrounding her. Truly it was a type of adventure now, she was on a quest of sort struggling every step of the way to get closer and closer to her goal of eventually uniting her family and the ordeals that must be undertaken to do such a thing. Taking a deep breath Sarah began to walk forward down the hallway in front of her. As she walked her footsteps echoed in the silence of the room and that was what played with her mind more than anything else. Walking, the echoes bounced off against the walls and the sounds vibrated in front of her, behind her, and to her sides. Every few moments she thought that there was something behind her, while the soft moon and bright stars that she had grown accustom too outside were now replaced with a glaring moon and piercing stars and shown down angrily on the girl as she looked down at the ground trying to release the thoughts from her head.

Sarah continued to walk forward, but the further she walked the less hope she had left in her body. The walls were all the same, the sky was the same, and the echoes seemed to becoming closer and closer. Now with every step she heard the footsteps coming closer and closer to her. Aggressive footsteps that saw her as a stranger, as a foreigner to this place, to this environment. The moon above, glared down at her and cast daunting shadows on the ground, this combined with the footsteps set the Lady Protector into quiet panic as she lifted her feet up quicker and quicker trying desperately to find the center of maze. What had Tyr done, he had sent her to lose her, she had no clue where she was at and no clue what to do.

After a half hour of searching the maze, she had lost all hope in ever reaching Mikhail in the center of the labyrinth, if he was there at all. Perhaps this was just another trick, another loose end in her quest. Leaning against the orange wall to catch her breath and think about her next step, Sarah pounded her fist against the orange brick. For all she knew, she was at the beginning again, and the shadows were still all around her. She could be watched at every move at every turn and she was unarmed, if there were hostiles somewhere in the labyrinth, she had no way to defend herself.

Then it was quiet as silence descended into the labyrinth and this was more frightful than the constant echoes and her mind began to play with her fears. Sarah began to imagine footsteps, imagine shadows that sent her into a deeper frenzy. Retreating from the wall, she started to walk briskly down the orange hall, but the darkness combined with the sounds in her head turned the walk into a run and from a run into a sprint. She ran as fast as she could, trying to escape the sounds and the unnameable shadows, when finally in the self-induced panic she came to a great iron gate and the fears disappeared replaced by the strong Tintagyl curiosity.

Pushing the gate open she walked into a great open plaza, unsure of what awaited her there.

The plaza was circular, clearly in the center of the labyrinth itself. The parts that bordered on the walls had flowing water, next to that were tiles of pavement, and a step further very short grass, the floor was perfectly horizontal without imperfections. There were several trees, but at this time of the year they had leaves no longer, it was a beautiful place, yet for some reason it felt somewhat like a memorial or a graveyard. At the very center were three statues of women holding spears in such a manner that they would cross upwards and the center, and a ring surrounded them. The pedestal to the small monument had runic writing, and there were four benches, as well as a symbol that mirrored the placement of the spears and ring:

Facing away from her and looking at the monument, was Týr sitting quietly. He waited for her to come closer.

This time Sarah approached in a whole different method. Tyr seemed different, wiser, more powerful, as if he had passed through the traditions of the ancients since the world had first began. Truly there was some sort of power that the Nordic people possessed that perhaps it was divine. It wasn't that she was afraid, or that she though she was inferior, but the man commanded mythic respect as she approached the area where Tyr was sitting. Walking towards him she took in the environment around her, the statues of the Valkyries were enormous and Sarah stood below them, her petite frame in contrast to the muscularity of the statues and the entire plaza seemed eerily quiet. Her footsteps echoed silently as she approached him and bowed as she came closer.

"My Lord? What is this? What is going on? Where am I?"

"This is the Maze of the Norns..."

With his eyes closed, he speaks

"The Norns are Aesir Women who have absolute power over universe, even beyond Lord Odin's capabilities. One for the past, one for the present, one for the future. This symbol is called the Norn Cross. The ring is said to represent the world, the universe, or the Nibelungen Ring, or maybe simply space, since each Norn represents time."

His head tilts back ever so slightly

"This is a place of spiritual significance. People come here as part of rituals sometime, or simply to clear their minds and reflect on their lives' situations. Some come to find themselves, some, to find others...such as yourself....some others come here to change and become something different. It is said that someone very powerful or something powerful is buried under the monument since prechristian times."

His eyes open slowly, and the place is very calm.

"Mikhail Solidor once came here. He met his fates." He looks up at the statues again. "And then, Mikhail Solidor was no more. Yet Týr remained." Then his head and eyes turn to focus on Sarah's own, looking right towards her fixedly. It was funny. Týr looked without a doubt older than 19.

That was the end of her journey. Mild wind blows for a few seconds.

There surrounded by the dead trees in this memorial to the goddesses of time Sarah stood perhaps facing her destiny as well as Mikhail's as she shook in suprise, shook, and perhaps some fear as well. The small wind blew her hair lightly as her sapphire glowed in the darkness around them, scared whether to turn away or look on further. Without haste Sarah fell to her knees and looked back up at the man who her husband had cried to her that he may have disappeared never to be seen again, lost in the rivers of time now stood in front of her with the power of Scandinavia at his fingertips.

"My Lord?" She shook her head for a moment. "Mikhail? How? Larsa said that you would only be a man no older than nineteen or twenty, yet you look so much more than that." A single tear dropped from her eye, but she smiled as the gray droplet ran down from her cheek onto the ground below her. Indeed the journey was over, but surely the questions and the confusion were not and perhaps neither was her destiny answered yet, the mysteries of the North never ceased to amazing the young girl who lifted off her knees and began to approach the seated leader. "How did it come to his then? And why bring me here to this place to tell me?"

He smiles sympathetically and pats the place next to him on the bench, other than that he didn't seem to be especially touched by the situation. It was time to explain,

"I look older. I am twenty only. I dress like an older person, and I went through a lot in this life as well. Plus seeming more mature is also a side effect of Martens' old Genetical Enhancement program. I do not actually even feel like I am twenty. But I won't look or feel older than this easily. I suppose that now you know why the Nordlands have the healthier people in the world and why the majority reaches 100 years. Heh. Martens gave us all life in many ways. He was like a second father to me. He trained me to become what I am and to make Nordheim what it is."

"Why here? Well, why not? It sure is beautiful. And you had to try so hard to make it. Doesn't it make you feel better that you accomplished this in spite of the odds? Lastly, I wouldn't just want to say it out and aloud in the streets normally. Heh."

The travesty, the need to impress was quickly washed away as soon as Mikhail beckoned her over to him. Setting down next to her nephew-in-law, she smiled warmly. "Its funny, especially when I'm the one that feels so much younger than you. Then again, I'm not that much older to begin with." Leaning back, Sarah looked up into the stars that had returned to their brightness and the moon to its care giving light. "Larsa will be incredibly proud of what you have made of yourself, we all are. When I first came to Nordheim, I could tell that the country was different from the rest of Europe. Scandinavia has always been." She chuckled. "Never as quick to fight as the rest of the world, diplomats and artists. I am excited to see your country thrive Mikhail and I really hope that some day you will come to Australia and visit Larsa and I." She shook her head in laughter. "Given the current situation I doubt that you'd be willing to accept my offer to adopt you into our family, but I only wish you the best. When Larsa returns to Brisbane, I will send a letter to you, we can have dinner as a family, a family of leaders."

Sarah turned and her eyes sparkled looking at Mikhail. Without another through she bounded off her seat and hugged him tightly. Indeed the quest was over now.

He closes his eyes, and leans into her, letting his breath out. He does not speak for a while, simply enjoying the moment, but all good things must come to an end... "Sarah. We will do that. But for the time being it is necessary for you to leave Nordheim. It is simply not safe. There are spies and eyes and ears. That is another reason why I took you here. But when things are safe again, we will meet again and have dinner..."

She frowned and looked back up at the sky. "I understand Mikhail." Sarah was all to well that Europe was still a place racked by espionage as most of the world was at the time and she didn't want to have any part in perhaps the loss of power for her nephew. "But please tell me, is it safe for me to simply return to the plane or is there more worry that I am here seeing you?" She looked at him hopefully. "Whatever you need me to do, just say the word."

"Thank you Mikhail, I look forward to it as well." She smiled as she got up from the bench and as Mikhail got to his feet, before Sarah set off once again towards the airport she ran back and jumped into his arms as he held her tightly. Their roles seemed reverse as she seemed like the young niece with her darling uncle than an aunt with her nephew. "Take care Mikhail, take care!" Leaving his embrace, Sarah left back behind where he stood and reentered into the city of Asgard proper away from the labyrinth.

She walked quickly back towards the airport, but not extremely fast, taking time to take in the beauty of the city around her, for it might be for an extended time before she could return. It was extremely late at night by this point and only Nordheim soldiers were out patrolling the streets, but as Sarah passed them they smiled and nodded. She still apparently had friends in the far north.

Passing into the airport complex she purchased tickets for a flight first to neutral Byzantium and then from their she would head to Brisbane. The feelings in Europe had already began to circulate throughout the world. As the plane took off from the runway she looked out of the window from the empty plane and looked down at the lit city of Asgard below. "Good-bye Mikhail, we will see each other again." Sarah said pressing her face against the window and smiled as she took off into the darkened night sky.
