Beyond "might makes right"

Fantastico

Whenever there is a controversy on Planet Bob we are reminded to "do something about it."

The most publicly recognizable way of "doing something about it" here is dropping or making treaties or going to war. This also is why "might makes right" continues to be such a popular language. It is a language we
think
we understand.

Contrary expressions include
right makes might
, or even
right makes right
. Both expressions were seen leading up to the Karma war, but now they are largely forgotten or ignored as meaningless or impossible.

No matter what our goals or motivations are as leaders here, do we have any hope of moving beyond
might makes right
?

If yes, how?

If no, why not?

Of course not. In this game, when the only way to realistically do anything is to declare war, those with the most power will always come out on top. How else would you suggest making "right"?

If we want to go meta with this question and talk about how to enjoy the game only as one of war, why bother ourselves with any of the politics? Why not just play CN:TE?

I think the answer is a more developed or "serious" sense of politics in SE is what makes it so much more enjoyable to play than TE.

Why shouldn't we develop our political institutions beyond the antiquated treaty system to add even more drama/entertainment value?

:)

I'm not sure. "Might makes right" can be used in context of influence also. Though, this is not really something new, as its force through power or suggestion of war if not agreed upon if resolution through compromise is not reached.

I'd rather see more diplomatic features added like a nuclear proliferation treaty that can motor alliances on a panel of board in the senate to those who hold the treaty with.

The war aspect of CN is not so much as war as it is diplomatic. war is part of the game. Any serious alliance in CN has had to make and break treaties, enforce them, some with war some with a flame war on the boards with disagreements of terms.

I feel more should be invested in government then choosing just, "communism" as a example, rather a body of government within a country from industry to social welfare. I know this has less to do with the question you asked straightforward. Though abuse of your population should be more felt by other nations, then just a panel of government positions.

I like these kinds of approaches you mention. Reading your reply I started wondering why we don't more with the Senate system in the game beyond just using it to sanction rogues. It seems there could be a lot of fun to be had there, too.

Sorry, for the late reply.

I don't know, it may have to due with the budget or it is considered sorta hard to setup. Your mainly throwing away the entire system, and starting over. Not sure if many see this as good.

I'd love to see it, though what is the cost to the players? Is this only in TE?

Hi, I just saw your reply here, too. I am thinking mostly in terms of SE. I'd prefer to try something that builds on the current system. Also, Iit would be nice to chat more about this. Always feel free to pm me or catch me on irc some time, too. In the meantime, I'll keep thinking about alternatives too.

Sure.

I will be off and on due to college, though I will be happy to talk about this. I think it would suite this if more were in the conversation then say us two.

I'm thinking more of expanding what we have said so far into the forums.
