Germanic Republic
Federal Republic of America Government & Nation Constitutional Federal Republic First-World Nation Branches: Administrative Judicial Legislative Military Seats of Power: Austin, National Capitol, Research and telecom center Birmingham, Industrial center Dallas, Military research center Houston, Space research center, industrial center Montgomery, Financial center Notable leaders: Foreign Minister: Reginald “Reggie” Carter Former company PR spokesman from Nashville, Reginald Carter quickly ascended to the position of Foreign Minister in the Engelmann administration, and in the Kunis administration. He has served with distinction, negotiated high-profile treaties and encounters with the FRA's neighbors in North America. During the transition from Imperialism and back to Republicanism, has maintained his position. A history of politics in the Federal Republic of America Upon the formation of the FRA, it was largely a collection of freethinkers, secularists, a minority of religious groups, and largely liberal and libertarian politics. Soon the republic was embroiled in a controversy in Texas, with the resurgence of the Amerikanisches Reich, which tried to take Texas from the Commonwealth of Texas-- the rightful rulers of Texas. The Commonwealth was supported by the FRA, and troops were dispatched to fight the war. It quickly became a phony war, and settled down and wound down. After these attempts were made with the outside world, the government grew complacent and inactive. With President Justin Murphy at its head as President, the Libertarian Party ignored the growing radical sentiments in the nation. This inactivity enabled religious radicals to seize control of the government, under the political leadership of the American Front, and establish a theocratic, fascist government. Dissidents were persecuted, non-religious populations especially. This lead to the formation of the Progressive Way, a peaceful resistance to the oppressive government, and the Allied Agenda, a terrorist organization that used assassination, sabotage, and other shows of force to combat the government. Eventually, the American Front's stranglehold on America was weakened, and after that it snowballed. The government collapsed, and the Libertarian Party once again took the reins, for a short period of time. The complacency of the Libertarian Party in countering the American Front was held against them come election time, and the party was soundly defeated, with the Progressive Way securing first, the Libertarian Party second, and the Allied Agenda third. Stephen Engelmann (PW) took the reins as President, with Justin Murphy (LPFRA) as Vice-President and Nikolai Kunis (AA) taking Secretary of State. Shortly afterwards came a national crises, in the dissolution of Pravus Ingruo, the benefactors of the Federal Republic of America and her closest neighbor and friend. The FRA seized Georgia, and South Carolina. In a deal with the state of Groenlandia, it allowed Groenlandia to obtain Florida before occupying the panhandle in an act of betrayal. This treachery would set the political course for an entire administration, and into the next. A threat was made by Groenlandia to attack the FRA with nuclear weaponry unless it ceded South Carolina to a free nation, and the panhandle of Florida to Groenlandia, which renamed itself the Atlantic States post-conflict. In the face of mounting pressure, from Louisiana and from Groenlandia, the FRA folded and ceded the necessary territories. A second round of elections gave a major defeat to the Libertarian Party. The American Front had collapsed, and a new Democratic Party had formed from the minor Green Party and the American Front. The Allied Agenda, its radical message no longer needed, dissolved and joined with the LPFRA and the PW. Justin Murphy was now retired, and the Presidency was held by Stephen Engelmann (PW), the Vice-Presidency was won by Nikolai Kunis (PW), and Secretary of State was won by Andrew Littleton (D). The situation in North America was looking increasingly terrifying for the Federal Republic of America, and drastic situations called for drastic measures. Her northern neighbor, New England, was invited into a merger between the two nations, to form the Federated States of America. The FRA would be play the junior partner in this relationship, but it indeed solidified the FRA's holdings in North America. Soon afterward, war came. A Coalition was aligned against Tahoe, and bound by treaty obligations, the FSA declared a state of war in defense of Tahoe. The Atlantic States and Louisiana became in a state of war with the Federated States of America, and open conflict happened on the Virginia border between New England and Atlantic forces. In South Carolina, a free nation, the Nos Tre Republik, was soon attacked by joint New England and FRA forces under FSA command, with the Federal Republic playing a key role in the conflict. The Battle of Summerville is one of the most well-known battles in the war, and the high toll it took would not be forgotten. With South Carolina back in the union, the Atlantic State, Louisiana, and the FSA signed a peace treaty-- the FSA dissolved, South Carolina would be given to the FRA with the stipulation that Charleston remain an Atlantic States port destination, with a contingent of forces stationed there. With the safety net that was the FSA gone, the FRA began to feel increasingly isolated from the world, insecure and unstable. It became a more militarized society, with daily military parades and national pride being shouted from every public venue, and a great respect for the defense of the republic. The assassination of President Stephen Engelmann (PW), and the installing of Nikolai Kunis (PW) as President, with Andrew Littleton (D) as Vice-President and Sarah Sheffield (PW) as Secretary of State, gave the country even more focus. With this new administration, and the installment of new foreign minister Reginald “Reggie” Carter, the FRA began to support more diplomatic ventures. It signed a treaty with the newly formed United States of America, which was later nullified, and codified the unofficial relationship between the J Andres Maritime Republic, what once was New England. It also reached out to the Atlantic States, signing a military access treaty. Former President Murphy was killed in a car wreck, making Nikolai Kunis the sole remaining president of the FRA that still lived. Following the increased militarization under Nikolai Kunis, he killed his political opponents, married his secretary of state, and declared himself Imperator of the Imperial States of America, and launched a war against the United States of America. He ceded Georgia and the Carolinas to Pravus Ingruo in exchange for friendly relations, and conquered the western portion of the US for the ISA. This was not to last, as he was deposed by his military-- opposition to Imperial leadership threatened to break out into civil war, and action needed to be taken. Stefan Holden & Clarence Potter deposed the leader, reformed the FRA, and were guiding it back into a limited form of its former Republicanism. Major reforms swept the nation, and the military eventually turned over power to the civilian government, and new elections would begin.
