I was on the other side of the colony when it all happened. Even at that great distance though, I could hear the screams of terror and death echoing through the tunnels. It's not something I'll soon forget. I wanted to run to them and see what I could do to help, but being a guard, it was my sworn duty to protect the queen's private waste room that day. A lot of soldiers died fighting the aardvark and to replenish the ranks, a lot of us guardsmen are being reassigned to full soldier status. I've been told my duties start tomorrow I'm pretty worried about that. I mean sure we have a reputation for being pretty bad $@!, but really my job description pretty much involves keeping larvae off the queen's lawn and bored workers from carving graffiti into the tunnel walls. I don't know if I'm cut out for the life of a soldier. But, I do what I must for the good of the colony. For now, I've been assigned to assist the workers in the clean up. It's....pretty bad. I found the head of #16224 under a pebble. He was a pretty good friend of mine. I put his head into the food stores. It's what he'd have wanted. It's like that all over: legs, antennae, mandibles....just all over. I'm glad I only have to do this for today. It's just too much.

Not one day in and we're already heading to war. What a week...
Anyway, I'm not sure of all the details, just that we're marching against the Reds. Not that I'm too heartbroken for them or anything. I never did trust them, and the less of them the better. It would just be nice to know why. Maybe they had something to do with the aardvark attack? I dunno.
I've been fitted with the standard issue M-24 mandibles (Flesh Cutters, we call them) and wow are they nice. Nothing like those pea-cutters I had as a guardsman. You could slice through the hard part of a ladybug's $@! without breaking a sweat with these things. Still though, I'm kinda worried. The only training I've had was a live-fire exercise on an already dead caterpillar earlier today. And now I'm expected to charge into battle against trained killers. On the other hand I've got some real hard asses surrounding me. These guys have seen some !@#$. You hear about the 10 inch stare, but until you actually see it in some of these vets...Wow. I'm glad they'll be there to lead the way. There's a lot of guys like me though: young, inexperienced, and scared !@#$less. You know this will be the first time I've ever left the colony's protective radius? Probably the same for a bunch of the others. A lot of them probably won't be coming back either... I just hope it's not all for nothing. Ah...but no time for those thoughts. The first scouting reports are trickling in and the orders to move could come at any second. Time to suit up. Keep us in your thoughts.
