OOC: How can you be a White Russian and be a Soviet State?

OOC: Soviet, before the 1917 Revolution, simply meant a governing council. It has no Socialist/Communist/Marxist meaning here. Also, White Russia is a geographic area in and around the area now known as Belarus, which used to be named Byelorussia, literally meaning White Russia.

OOC: But the "White Russians" were the ones who supported the Czar.

OOC: I know what I'm talking about. Byelorussia, Belorussia, Belarus, they all literally mean White Russia. It's a geographical region. I would link you to wikipedia, but Admin doesn't allow links to there. Just search White Russia on wikipedia and it'll explain.

OOC: I know Belarus means "White Russia" in a lot of languages, but in 1917-1919, "White Russia" and the "White Army" refered to the supporters of the Czar, seeing as white is generally considered to be the color of Monarchism. That's all I want to say, I'll stop taking up space on your post now.

Traveler's Profile

[This article was written by a foreign visitor to the Commonwealth of White Russia, one essay details his stay in the Spring, the other the same traveler's stay in Winter.]

Spring

Trains are an intergal part of Byelorussian society. Mine wound across the low hills and forests of Belarus towards Minsk after I arrived via plane.

The country is hearty and green in the spring. The same is true for the Ukrainian and Moldovan portions, to which I also journeyed. Tall thin trees cover much of the countryside, all very dark and deep greens. Pristine rivers also wind thorugh the beautiful landscape.

Kiev and Minsk are relatively alike, both being Slavic cultural centers. Domed, Eastern-style cathedrals seem ubiquitous, as the people take a keen interest in religious tradition, almost exclusively Russian Orthodox in the country.

Heavy industry can be found in both cities, but so can very nice residential and commercial districts. The leisure areas of the cities are rather pleasent, especially when dealing with other foreigners. The natives seem a little distanced from the tourists, a little stand-offish. I found that the Cafe Baltic is a rather good coffee and pastry house, which can be found in many cities.

Winter

I returned to Byelorussia in the winter to find a completely different place than I had in the spring. With very little tourist activity in January, I could see more into the lives of normal citizens rather, since I was confined to Minsk on this journey for the weather.

The people are more stand-offish than I thought, showing a noticeable disdain for foreigners. They remain polite, as is stressed in their culture, but the often seek to stay in a position of power in a conversation, if you can get them to speak to you.

Most simply stare at you. This xenophobism is most likely due to the events of World War II, when Nazi Invasions scarred the West of the country. Ever since its gaining of independence, Byelorussia has become noticeably more xenophobic. No harm befalls foreigners, nor discrimination, but it would be a lie if one of them said they wanted you there.

What I did see of the countryside was picturesque. Slow snow fall made for beautiful photographs, as ice covered rivers meandered through fields of snow, the forest tipped with white at their tops and covered in it at their bottoms.
