Cybil de Blanc
Northanic Slang Cyb: Named after Queen Cybil de Blanc, who favoured this hairstyle, it consists of a low-tied ponytail with braids looped around the ears. Often seen adorned by Northanic women and girls with long hair. Femme Fantastique: A powerful female figure, ranging from a female governmental figure to a family's strict mother. French for "fantastic woman". Going under belly: The act of having one's reindeer's saddle slide so that the rider is riding upside-down. Often considered the result of a novice not adjusting their girth properly, and has become a term that applies to any situation that is going downhill. Inerrky: Pretty. Derived from the Inuit word inerkonartok - "pretty" or "fair". Nerky/Nerkish: A variant of the term "inerrky". Shiny Fisher: Someone who fishes for aluminium garbage off of Cyneriice Northan - it is a well-known but less popular kind of work. To be searching for something valuable amongst what might be considered junk is called "fishing for shinies". Tintagylyish: Someone who is or a method that is peaceful or tries to solve problems without violence or with minimal conflict. Originally slang amongst the Northanic newspeople, who often had foreigners compare Northanic policies to that of Sarah Tintagyl's. Ummie: Derogatory term for someone who has a low tolerance of the cold. Often applied to foreigners not used to the Arctic climate. Derived from umikjuktok, meaning "beard full of frost" in Inuit. Wheathouse: A greenhouse specialized to grow wheat, especially club wheat. Cyneriice Northan is not suitable for growing many crops outside, so most agriculture outside of husbandry is done in greenhouses. Will do as much good as a horse's rider on a reindeer: A saying that basically means, "It won't do any good," or "It's hopeless." It reflects how a horse's rider may know how to ride, but without knowledge of reindeer body language, temperament or the differences in body structure which require specialized equipment, they will be unable to ride properly, and ultimately cause harm to themselves, anybody nearby and the reindeer itself. Cybil de Blanc
Unique Northanic Holidays Summer's End (Last week of July): A celebration of the end of the brief Arctic summer. The last wild plants gathered in the summer are made into festive, Arctic summer-themed drinks and goodies, while anything inedible is preserved and made into decoration or clothing. Lots of singing, dancing and storytelling is done during this celebration, and it is tradition for many, including Northanic newspapers, to take a picture of the midnight sun on the last day of July. Royal Birthday: The birthday of the members of Cyneriice Northan's current royal family are celebrated as national holidays. Most businesses are closed, and in Northanholde, there's a big party near Castle Northanholde, where the royalty goes out to meet and mingle with the common people. Not to mention, of course, the parties the people throw. Pubs, restaurants and other food services that remain open will have ridiculous discounts on almost everything on the menu, so that whoever throws a party gets the most guests. Nothing like being hospitable on your benevolent ruler's birthday! All Saints Day (November 1st): All Saints Day is treated as the Northanic version of Thanksgiving. It is a very holy day, where all gods worshiped are "invited" to a dinner - images, icons and the like of the god are placed around the table, kitchen and general dining area, with the head of the table made into a little shrine. Anything from the dinner is left on a plate before the shrine and covered, and left overnight so that the gods may enjoy some yummy food in private.
