The Ptolemaic Empire
The Ptolemaic Empire is a Greek speaking kingdom located on the island of Cyprus, in the Mediterranean Sea. While not being exclusively Greek in the most puritanical sense (being greek cypriots), the Ptolemaic empire tends to blend the culture of the island with the Hellenization that has dominated the island for many ages.
The empire is a monarchy, with a strict caste system based upon the paternal rule of ancient Rome, paterfamilia. The roles in society are governed by which class a person is born into. There are helots, perioikoi and citizens. Most state and religious leadership is exclusive to citizens, whereas the military accepts from all three.

I'm looking to get a plot on the map and it looks like every space open is taken by someone as a "protectorate". What gives? How is someone supposed to get involved if all the land is taken...?

Some things to remember are that Athens is an independent, democratically governed city that operates and expresses itself as a State. It's people, the Greeks, produce primarily lead and rubber based products for export. It also produces wheat and olive products. It's primary imports are timber and ore. Currently, Athens has entered into an exclusive alliance with Sparta, effectively joining it's collective political, economic and military resources with theirs. Other states have done likewise, and have bolstered the ranks of various greek city states.
