Cortath.

<snip>

I'll also echo that it can be a real hassle being a frontline personality. Seriously, some of the people that play this game border on sociopathy. Some get used to it, but I think it's something that deters or would deter most players. It's hard to play CN with people to whom the entirety of the internet is the game; it's not just metagaming but metagaming on crack, where anything about a player that can be accessed on the internet becomes fair play. That online culture is anathema to the sort of escapist character roleplay we are discussing and I've long been an advocate of pruning it from this community.

I'll note that walford, the example you cited Ameris, ran into this, from some of the same lot that perpetuate it presently.
Wow. You've succinctly stated what may have taken me a full page to relate; my hat is off to you.

Part of the problem with these online games, as perhaps Chron hints at, is a sort of character fatigue. Few players are able to continue playing their characters for years and years, and many, like real leaders, are loathe to give up the power to do so. It is a difficult job for a new leader to spend political capital wiping clean the slate of upper management who may have been excellent in 2006 or 2007, but less able and less active to perform in 2011.

What someone like the leaders Chron mentions, and I'll simply name Moldavi for simplicity sakes, comes into a new planet, a new world, with ready-made cadres of talented people, he doesn't have to waste political capital or time forming coalition or solidifying power. He can simply go out and do whatever foreign policy he wishes to do. Such is a tabula rosa. But in an established world like ours, no leader can come to power in such a way. There is clawing uphill, and compromises, and shifting alliances, and once there, debts to be paid. You can't simply go out and do whatever you want, because you're part of a large alliance power structure that is difficult to change, refocus, and shape. You must work within the structure that brought you to power, and it is not easy to purge or cleanse an alliance leadership to put in place your own people. Such is not possible is a more developed political environment, only in one such as that in which we were all born to in 2006.
Excellent analysis.

Another point that will go whooshing over hundreds of pinheads is that when someone does something that shakes things up people will laugh with amusement but demonstrate blind hypocrisy and flame, torture, insult the shaker until life becomes untenable ... effectively chasing interesting characters away. Yes, I refer to myself. In your secret self-talk (inside your own heads) you'll enjoy and always remember the ice sculpture that greeted visitors to a forum's url yet in your public talk condemn the joker to hell. Many of you would have done similar in the same circumstances but you'll never admit it.

As with Methrage, there's a clear reason why your reputation is slightly below that of pond scum. You certainly haven't proven yourself to the community as a 'changed' individual, and your response to New Frontier's light ribbing is further proving that you're the same old Peggy Sue we all would love to nuke like a tv dinner. We'd even be nice enough to remove the cellophane over your apple crumb cake.

Changing to meet the standards of the Open World Forum community would be like having a Bachelor's degree then tossing it away along with any reading comprehension above 6th grade level.

Congratulations to Non Grata. If only less of those NS points belonged to Peggy Sue.

Flaming for the sake of having some reason to pat your own back? You're not in possession of the first clue ...

Non Grata is growing smartly and one little nation the size of mine won't affect their growth one way or another.

Alright, this is my last post here, it's painful to see the delusions here and comment on them. Even more so because I believe you meant good in your own way.

The only solid time someone arose to replace another government member, or bothered telling me or NakedTime about it was Edmonto, he gave us several days notice and made his replacement irule. irule proceeded to leave also the following week with Canfor (Tribune #1) and Warlord (MoD), they gave me a few hours notice and no replacements were made. The next week MadMike (Tribune #2) also proceeded to leave without telling me at all beforehand, no replacement in sight. You had also left Prime Minister and NakedTime assumed De Facto Prime Minister.

By the time December 27th rolled in, NakedTime and I were the only government left (PM and Tribune) with Altheus brought in to help. This is how I remember it. This is how the forums remember it.
Bologna, especially the part about MadMike. He even stayed around to do and help with Finances ... he maintained a high op in your IRC channel for what, a couple months after?
I appointed NakedTime before leaving.
Every person left a replacement. Period.

It was also hilarious when some nobody tried to mediate between peggy and UPN and she was trying to use the fact that she had a copy of the database as a bargaining chip for getting out of being punished.

Then we told her that I had recovered the boards already.
Didn't try to get out of anything you jerk. I was trying to get Altheus to talk.
I sat on NONE waiting for UPN to do its thing, but they never managed to get it done. One excuse then another. GOONs finally raided me to ZI.
We can usually depend on them!

I've crossed IPs and neither are close to similar. Sad to see you go Peggy.

Also peggysus 2.0 will live on!!!
It was a good idea. We all knew that Democracy in CN is a bad idea and we wanted to move away from that ... while keeping my promise to preserve UPN's way, well, making a new home was the way to go. Would have worked well if I'd have screwed up UPN's forum before joining Pegasus ... that is part of the reason I didn't want a gov spot right away in Pegasus. Members wanted otherwise and I unwisely took the seat.

By the way, to Dex and anyone else that still spouts nonsense about us leaving UPN with no gov except Dex ... FALSE!
Every high gov person that planned to leave made SURE he had a trained 2nd in command to take the spot when he left. It was not our fault that some chose to NOT stand up and take the seat in the departments they worked in. We left UPN with a fully staffed (except for one seat) government.
But, as had been the habit of UPN's members in the past, not many stood up to do the work. Hansarius and DonVox literally did all the alliance work before I joined and took the MoFA job. They burnt out. I burnt out. Lesson from this ... Democracy in CN is not good ... and all members need to lend a hand in running the alliance.

Also, hatred from DRAGON, Alchemy, whomever else was former UPN ... You wanted to be the one Altheus chose to take the reins. Some of you told me in private that you just couldn't handle me being leader because you couldn't accept Altheus retiring ... or that you wanted the seat yourself and were jealous. So much hatred came from old time members ... hatred that Altheus could have helped alleviate if he chose.
Meh. Intense. Memorable. And I really liked a lot of you ... especially you, Dohnutninja. You are going to be able to go into just about any career you choose and you'll use your good humor, intellect and common sense along the way. All my best wishes to you.

On topic: you've been a very active player/character, Peggy, and CN will be poorer without you (whether the posters in this thread realize it or not).
If you leave: farewell, have fun out there.
If you re-roll: good luck with your next incarnation. Be sure you don't give yourself away (unless that's part of your plan).

December wasn't a particularly good month for UPN, Dex. In fact, I'd say it was far worse than the 50 days we spent at war in defense of Polar. Indeed, the former was more or less our own doing -- or at least very much within or control; the latter not so much.

Anyway, best of luck, Peggy, in the future.

And when she is dealing with any1 who disagrees with her or point out that it's her own fualt for getting raided 4 times casue she messed up so badly the first time her allies had to bail her out and then she canaceled on them. Peggy offends people 5 miles away just walking in to a room.

I know you like stick up for the moral thing but sometimes it's not moral it's morronic.
Such a history revision isn't becoming to you.

Allies ... oh, you mean ODN? You know as well as anyone that the behind the back agreement made between OsRavan and GOONs was against my wishes. They didn't HAVE to bail out ... OsRavan wanted to play it that way.
Now, other details of that episode aside (such as ... agreeing to pay reps is one thing but paying them while an alliance is at war is universally frowned upon on Planet Bob) ... How many alliance leaders would you expect to take a move like that -- a move that trampled UPN's sovereignty -- and just smile and walk away?
Are you implying that GOONs raiding UPN members all those months was due to something other than trying to start drama?

Speaking of moronic ...

For having such superior intellect, you sure seem to make dumb errors. Two in the past couple days would be giving credit to Beefspari for Dr. Beefstupid's Dramatic Reading of your posts, now egging on whoever this "boy" is who you claim is obsessed with you (who is that btw?) to attack you. You say you have an open slot, which you do, but you fail to realize it's a DEFENSIVE slot.
Geesh. I will have a slot in a couple days. There is no reason to assume I'm that damn dumb.

13.
CN, being an open ended game, is what you make of it. I wouldn't go as far to say that no one gets hurt, because the more time you invest in a game the more you're emotionally attached to what happens, but this is a environment were nobody gets killed, destroyed or even have their nations forcibly deleted by other players.

Which makes OOC sniping a bit sad, but perhaps predictable. Frankly the OOC-IC in general is crossed over so many times and with such a laissez-faire attitude, that I struggle to work out if an insult is meant to be taken personally or not. Thankfully it's so laissez-faire that it's possible to pretend everything is IC and shrug it off if it's not, but pity the poor newcomer who comes into the game and doesn't grasp that concept quickly.

In most circumstances, like any internet game, none of us have really met each other, not really. It's possible that in real life the guy that you have the biggest IC grudge against could be this really cool guy who you share a million of your interests with and would be great company for a pint in the pub. But, in nearly all circumstances you'll never know. Peggy, I honestly think you shouldn't have posted this in an OOC area, but it's not like you're the first. It's inviting things to spill over into OOC and lord knows that happens too much in CN already.

Some things, specifically OOC things, like someones personal details and alliance forums should be sacrosanct, by that I don't mean that there should be IC punishment for breaking them, because that again encourages IC and OOC to meld, what I mean is that people should just agree not to interfer in such things in the interests of the game.
However in as large a community as this the chances of getting enough community spirit to prevent such a thing is basically nil. Again sad, but heh.

In the context of the game however, preventing people from acting as they want would be a mistake. Everyone's here (or should be) to enjoy themselves and so all the !@#$%*y, aggressive, rude, lazy, good-for-nothing and whatever people in the game have every right to act that way. Consequences yes, but they should always be IC consequences.

In contrast though on this OOC thread (and others) people are full of "such and such adds nothing to the game/is a bad player/should leave" etc. What rubbish. They're here to play a game as they see fit and entertaining others isn't a prerequisite.

I hope when/if you read this Peggy you'll take this as it's intended, both as a warning of the perils of mixing IC & OOC (if only for your health) but also as a way to say that I sincerely hope you have enjoyed the game and it hasn't sent you too crazy.
Altheus, I posted this in OOC because that is when most of the !@#$ hit the fan in terms of me choosing to not grin and go on when crap kept coming my way ... OOC crap.

Edit: Also, the fact so many of you go on merrily along socially accepting the turds that do OOC invasions makes my desire to mingle with people that accept such behavior nil.

14.
No, I think you are way too easy to annoy because you are so uptight and take everything to the extreme. Seeing you rage and rage about things that can easily be laughed off is kinda funny. People single you out because they feel you are an easy pray, and they are right. One valuable lesson I would like to give to you as parting gift: Chill out. Relax. Don't let things bother you so much. It will prove valuable in real life too.
I know some will never get it or try to, but,
IRL I am one of the most chill people you'd ever meet. Look, it is a matter of the complete lack of good old-fashioned manners that is unacceptable to me. Poking someone's temper spot for the grins is immature and tends to be mean on Planet Bob. THAT is what I won't ever accept about Bob and it is what I refuse to excuse when those around the mean ones accept it.

15.
Since you "went here"... <_<

You're dealing with the most part with college kids and teenagers. Some of them are mature far beyond their years, others...not so much. Let's also not forget those that are adults chronologically but get online and drop maturity levels and IQ points before the game finishes loading (any game, really not just CN), those that stink at online gaming of any sort, and the people who push other people's buttons for lulz.

Fine, you're smarter than the room. Walford was smarter than the room. Slayer99 was smarter than the room (more on him later). Bravo. Yet exactly where did that get you? These people may become mildly retarded when they open their web browsers, they may be kids pretending to be adults, they may be adults pretending to be kids, they may even decide to be just plain old mean because they can. They also make up the vast majority of the 18-19k of people claiming to be playing this game. When you talk down to them, they get pissed. When they get pissed enough they organize and when they organize you find yourself kicked from your alliance and rouging a few of the less special people for entertainment as you make for the exit. You end up not looking smarter than the room at all. If anything, you just let lesser people beat you.

I wish you well in life, I hope you learned from lessons from your experiences here that don't include some erudite delusion that is designed to shield your ego. If and when you come back, assuming you really are leaving, do so knowing that it's ok to be smarter than the room, but rubbing that fact in people's faces will get you a quick exit. Slayer99 figured it out, left on his own terms. Walford didn't for the longest time and wasted people's time and money (including RL money) trying to keep him around.
Good words, Chairman,

It should go without saying that my public demeanor snapped after taking the hatred for nearly a year. There is a limit to the number of times a person can grin and overlook IRC jerks with names such as "GonnaRapeYou" and other outrages. There is a limit to the number of times one can see one's alliance as a pack of cowards ... it is a digital roleplaying game and why in the world would someone want to preserve their pixels rather than stand up to the world? Whatever.

Also, I was not booted from any alliance.
I left UPN after the umpteenth time one of Fluffy's men blocked the path I knew we needed to take.
I left Pegasus under terms to try to save them. Pegasus made up her own mind to break up and fight for a couple days.

19. I've enjoyed this thread and have several things to say in response (of course, you'd expect nothing less of me, eh?).
Unfortunately, though I am in the mood to reply at length I only have time for a couple of things now; hopefully I'll have a chance to thoroughly address some of the more ridiculous posts ...
/me looks sideways at the fluffy person

Most importantly I want to say to the GOONs -- You are a fun bunch and I know I can rely on some genuine intelligence when I communicate with you all.
It is true that you all raided UPN about 4 times in 3 months and always said "Oops, it was a mistake," or something similar. Of course I know you were making those mistakes on purpose. Of course I knew UPN was hated fairly universally and wasn't likely to have much back up on the matter of making a stand against GOONs ... but I was raised by Walford and Slayer99 and bending over for bullies was never in my blood so I had to make a stand. Also, UPN had used the 'conflicting treaties' BS and was universally seen as a ... well, I don't need a warn for saying what the world really thought of UPN ... But UPN absolutely HAD to make a stand.

(How ironic that the world stopped picking on UPN when I went solo ... UPN seems to be no longer universally hated as it was. You're welcome, UPN members.)

When I saw the abject cowardice of the Worst Coalition Ever, and saw them allow their ignorance to give their blind hatred of me free reign and not make a stand against GOONs I pretty much gave up on the ruling class of this insane world. Notice how GOONs did a pre-emptive strike a couple months later? Would any of you pea-brained NERF-headed fools have an intelligent comment on that?

What brought the hatred of me to such a fevered pitch? Was it simply being given the reigns of UPN? Was it one obsessive little boy that got pissed off and went on a rampage IC and OOC? Was it ruling UPN while knowing USN had its claws still deeply inside UPN and doing things to counter-act the Fluffy's claws as much as possible?
Was it taking over an alliance with a pathetic foreign policy (with about 30 treaties -- that is NOT an exaggeration) and doing my best to clear up our treaty mess?
Was it cancelling on FEAR? ODN? Let me tell you I wanted UPN to try to improve relations with NPO but while trying to lead UPN in the direction the MEMBERS desired I took their word they wanted NpO for best friend instead of NPO? Was it all those silly mergers Kevanovia tried (against my wishes and behind my back)?

All this is what it is ... and I had a lot of fun, but admit to being very disappointed at the behavior of 'nation rulers' on this Opern World Forum.

This IS a role-playing game, you pea-brained NERF heads.

20. Try really hard to 'get' this; The OP is not crying, though in your small minds I can see how you enjoy accusing people of crying.
The OP is a taunt.
State of Mind is enjoying her last days with some GOONs fun. If you are not capable of understanding the concept please find a different thread to spout your usual goofy mind-numbingly irrelevant drivel.
Cheers
