The Staatspresident is dead!

Effective immediately, the Republic of Transvaal no longer exists in CNRP.

Staatspresident Botha was assassinated in the early hours of this morning when rogues from TysLand (Californian) launched nuclear missiles at Pretoria.

The Staatspresident is believed to have perished during the blast; the remainder of the government had been evacuated into the countryside to avoid nuclear devestation but the Staatspresident refused to leave.

Effective immediately, the Government and National Volksraad of the Republic of Transvaal has placed Transvaal and all its constuent territory (listed below) under the direct rule of Vedran I, Sovereign of Arctica and Transvaal for his usage as he sees fit.

- South Africa
- Namibia
- Lesotho
- Botswana
- Swaziland
- Zimbabwe
- Mozambique
- Malawi
- islands in Altanic and Indian Ocean (Prince Edward Island, Marion Island, Bouvet Island, Ascension Island, St. Helena, the Tristian de Cunha Islands, South Georgia, and South Sandwich Islands)
- Clipperon Island in the North Pacific

OOC: As per our request to Lynneth the mapmaker, we ask that Natal continue to be maintained in perpetuity as a neutral, untouchable country in CNRP on account of the surrender aggrements signed between Transvaal and Natal during the IG South African War of 2007. One of Transvaal's obligations was to maintain and protect Natalian independence; we now pass that obligation on to Transvaal's new ruler, Sovereign Vedran I.

[signed]

Prime Minister M Hofmeyr, on behalf of the government of Transvaal (February 5, 2011)

OOC: I'm resigning from CNRP and CN due to various issues which have cropped up. One of those has been mainatining alliance commitments while also maintaining Botha Mode RP restrictions. The recent rogue attack on my from Californian is a direct cause of this.

Goodbye Botha

Hail Staatspresident
I echo what I said on the Nordreich Forums, You are a pillar of Nordreich and of CNRP. I know I will not be the only one weeping on this day, in fact I am weeping as I write this. When I joined CNRP for the first time, I was confused and lost then got rolled, came back again and again and again in various incarnations. Yet, There was always one constant. You my friend, You, Botha stood above us all as a pillar.

I weep now for the fall of that pillar now.

For the Final Time,

Hail Botha
A model for us all to aspire and dream of becoming.

See you.

In Pretoria

"Sir, we have to go! Now!" The soldier's voice was almost completely obscured by the roar of the rotors. Anton Dietz heard it, but he had no intentions of obeying. On the roof of the now-empty Arctican embassy, embassy staff, guards, and citizens who could not leave in time were piling into the helicopter. As he ushered the last of them into the doors, the ambassador released a breath he had been holding.

The man who had called out to him now reached his hand out to pull Dietz in, but the ambassador knew the chopper was already too heavy. As he locked eyes with the guard, the soldier knew that he wasn't coming with them. After a moment of hesitation, he saluted the man and pulled the door shut, yelling at the pilot to take off. As the helicopter lifted off the pad, Dietz watched them leave, then stepped up onto the helipad, scanning the skies.

Meanwhile, at Government House, a group of the embassy guard exited their SUV's and proceeded towards the building. They had volunteered to attempt a last-ditch effort to evacuate the Staatspresident. Even as they ran across the lawns, they knew they wouldn't make it.

Back on the helipad at the embassy, as he scanned the skies, Dietz considered his life and his accomplishments. His family was now safely in Arctica, having been evacuated the moment Transvaal issued its warning that war was coming. But he stayed. He said a few final prayers and thought he saw something in his peripheral vision. He tried to focus on it, but before he could make out what it was, a blinding flash filled his vision. That was the last thing Anton Dietz saw, because seconds later he, and the building under his feet, were vaporized.

The men at Government House saw it too, just as they reached the front door. It was the last thing many people saw, including most of those on that final flight out of the embassy. The helicopter crashed in the outskirts of town, the fate of its passengers unknown.

In Oceana

On Vecanti Island just outside the city, Vedran was just exiting the Central Government Building to return to his home on the island, when he was approached by an aide, running up to him and standing in his way. The young man was clearly in a mild state of shock.

"What is it, man? Speak!"

"A...a nuclear bomb hit Pretoria five minutes ago. The Staatspresident's been reported dead, and our embasssy is gone."

"What?" Vedran asked incredulously, his face one of disbelief. "How...how could that happen?" he said to himself, beginning to lose his composure. "Dead?"

"Yes sir, five minutes ago. I can't believe it myself..." The aide broke into tears. Vedran just stood there, mouth agape, for several seconds before turning, and, with as much dignity as he could bring forth, walked back across the lobby to the elevator. He hit 60 and swiped his personal access card when prompted. As the doors closed, he backed against the wall and slid down to the floor, in shock himself. It was a long elevator ride, and he had plenty of time to regain his composure. He stood and straightened his suit just as the doors opened.

Walking to his office, his personal guards who had their quarters and rec room on the floor followed him with their eyes, all activity and talk ceasing. Reaching his office door, he turned to look at a group of them standing in the hallway. "Well haven't you heard the news?"

They nodded slowly and looked at the floor, uncomfortable at seeing their leader like this.

"Then what are you looking at? Tell the right people I want a full report brought to my desk, 90 minutes ago." He went into his office and slammed the double doors shut.

-------

One hour later.

At a hastily arranged press conference, reporters arrived, many of them still in their street clothes, or suits without ties, and in a few cases hair still wet from the beach. The podium bore the Foreign Ministry seal and technical crew were hurrying to install speakers.

The dull roar of the combined chatter of reporters died down as a grim-looking Sovereign walked on stage. A technician handed him a microphone, its wire running all the way down to the foot of the stage.

"Hello," began Vedran, as cameras set up only minutes ago began to focus on him.

"I am sure you all know what this is about. A despicable band of vagabonds has launched a nuclear weapon at our ally Transvaal. Specifically, at the city of Pretoria, killing many, including the Staatspresident. It is confirmed that the rest of the government had escaped prior to the attack, but the Staatspresident, a colleague and personal friend of mine, in his determination refused to leave. Unconfirmed reports are coming in that the Ambassador and his staff have perished. While we cannot confirm this, it is a fact that the embassy building and surrounding embassy row have been obliterated. However, many Arcticans seeking refuge at the embassy were evacuated and are currently in Mozambique.

I am told that the Foreign Ministry maintains a list of Arcticans, tourists and expatriates, confirmed dead or alive, as well as other information, at www.mofa.gov.ac

The government of Transvaal has decided to hand over all of its territory to Arctica. I am afraid that I cannot say much more about this other than that we do not plan to annex Transvaal and that this issue will be handled in coming weeks.

As Supreme Commander, I have ordered one half of the Arctica-Transvaal Defense Force, and 75% of its medical corps to move into mainland Transvaal to assist in security and first aid. Additionally, the Ministry of Health is dispatching HAZMAT and medical teams to Pretoria for emergency assistance. The Arctican White Cross has reported that it will be providing medical aid as well as the transport of supplies to Johannesburg to aid in the immediate emergency, and with the assistance of 1,000 army engineers I have allocated, will be constructing refugee camps, as well as activating the White Cross mandated refugee camp system already established on Madagascar.

I appeal to the international community for humanitarian support including doctors and emergency supplies. Johannesburg will be the base of emergency relief operations."

Vedran took off his suit jacket. The room was rather stuffy.

"I know this will greatly upset the denizens of Johannesburg, and I apologize, but to maintain order and prevent widespread crime, as of now, I am declaring a state of martial law in the city and suburbs of Johannesburg. This is for their safety. 2,000 army troops aided by 1,200 military police will be transported to the city to enforce civil order. 400 of these troops are paratroops and will be arriving tonight. For the following week, a curfew of 10:00 will be enforced in Johannesburg and its suburbs. I ask that the people of Johannesburg cooperate with the soldiers. No unreasonable requests will be made and they will cooperate with the existing police force and military to maintain order. Martial law is also in effect in Pretoria for the duration of the emergency.

All other cities and jurisdictions in Transvaal, we ask that local and provincial authorities maintain order in the absence of a functioning national government, and to be patient while the situation is sorted out. Furthermore, no coup attempts or any carrying out of vendettas by the Transvaler military will be tolerated. If such attempts are made, Arctican soldiers have authorization to defend themselves and the people of Transvaal.

For any Transvaler government members that are watching this broadcast, I call for you to come to Johannesburg to aid us in reestablishing some form of order. Especially, Field Marshal Cruywagen, Foreign Minister Joubert, and all surviving National Volksraad members."

In the provinces, news of the destruction of Pretoria caused panic and alarm. Transvaal had always been a racial tinderbox whose lid had been firmly kept shut by Pretoria. It was no secret - not to the Transvalers themselves; not to the experts and foreigner obsrevors of Southern Africa.

But despite the various prime ministers of questionable intentions who had governed the Republic over the years, the pragmatic and paternalistic hand of the Staatspresident had always kept the peace over Southern Africa.

But now that hand was gone…

In the wake of the Staatspresident’s death, some people saw this as the sign of the apocalypse. There were unconfirmed reports of mass suicides amongst some of the more religious – unwilling to face the new order which would follow the ominous mushroom clouds engulfing their volkstaat. And old antagonisms between black and white sparked in some tense areas , rearing the ugly head of race riots breaking out.

But as the general public panicked and anarchy begun to set in over what little left of smoldering Pretoria, Oceana began to receive calls from the provincial governors of Transvaal.

Before Tele-Transvaal went off the air (one of its causalities was Lukas Reitz, the pompous and obnoxious face of South African television – he too, perished in the blast while reading the weather broadcast on television), the governors had on their own accord accepted Hofmeyr’s appeal.

“Edmund Thomasson here speaking, I’m the Governor of Nambia…” said the former exile from Franzharia in a broken voice. His non-South African accent gave him away as being exceptional – and that was because Thomasson was an uitlander, a foreigner, something almost unheard of in the ruling circles of the Republic. In the course of his lengthy career, he had witnessed more political upheaval and destruction that any other member of Transvaal’s government. He had been the colonial governor in Somalia back in the days of the old Franzharian Empire. After Transvaal occupied Somalia, he threw in his lot with Pretoria and some time later his loyalty was rewarded with the fairly-prestigious posting of Namibian governor.

“Please inform the sovereign… now, err… my sovereign… that I do hereby swear my allegiance and that of my provincial jurisdiction to Arctica.”

Vedran would soon receive similar calls from Willem Coetzee, Governor of Rhodesia, Jakob Hertzog, the co-governor of the joint administration territory, and Governor Alberto Azcondos of the Southern Mozambique province. The provincial-level governors and administrators had all unanimously supported Hofmeyr’s appeal to look towards Arctica now for leadership.

While the country may have been falling apart at the local level, what remained of the civil service and state infrastructure picked themselves up, dusted off their suits and pants, and turned their eyes towards Oceana for salvation and hope.

With the official national media voices now silent, it was unknown except to those on the front lines whether the military command was still maintaining resistance or planning its exit strategy to flee to Arctica and elsewhere.

Capitan Jerald-Esclaire III's body as well as parts of his crew and submarine would be found floating in the middle of the Indian Ocean. One of the men, whose corpse consisted of half a burned torso, held an advanced water-proof radio machine that had by some miracle not been damaged in the nuclear blast. A single message had been recorded in the past hour and had been set to loop. The instrument was broadcasting on all channels, in the hopes that the whole world would gain a better understanding of the atrocity that had been committed.

"PEOPLE OF THE WORLD, THIS IS CAPITAN JERALD-ESCLAIRE III

THREE MINUTES AGO WE DETECTED THE LAUNCH OF TWO NUCLEAR WARHEADS FROM TRANSVAAL. WE HAD NO INTENTION OF USING SUCH WEAPONS OF DESTRUCTION HOWEVER TRANSVAAL HAS DECIDED TO INITIATE NUCLEAR CONFLICT. WE ARE LAUNCHING TWO NUCLEAR WARHEADS IN RETALIATION. WE MAY PERISH HOWEVER OUR LEGACIES WILL LIVE ON FOREVER. CAPITAN OUT."

The Kingdom of Cochin expresses its grave shock at the dissolution of Transvaal, a nation that has forever been a bulwark representing stability, peace and continuity in our planet. In honor of the dead in Transvaal, the flags of Cochin shall fly at half mast for one week.

The radio messages on being received and intercepted would be triangulated and immediately Royal Cochin Navy would deploy forces to interdict it. While minutes after the radio transmission began it would be reconned by a NAVSAT reconnaissance satellite soon it would be under coverage of a S-RECO surveillance UAV launched by a GG12 SOP rocket. If any further hint of hostile activity is shown by the rogue submarine it would be destroyed by one of the two orbiting UAVs with SOP weaponry which would maintain offensive capability until the nearest JM2Ns would reach the patrol area. Soon a surface warship of Royal Cochin Navy would capture the rogue submarine and whatever remains of its crew and would send messages to all nations affected by the spate of nuclear attacks, ie Holy American Empire, Korea, England, Nod, J Andres, Marscurian Siberia to claim the vessel and the bodies of the crew. A rescue operation would also be launched to collect all the dead bodies seen strewn around the submarine and would be placed in the ship's morgue.

In light of the dissolution of Transvaal and transfer of sovereignty of erstwhile Transvaaler territories to Arctica, we hope that the Cochin Naval Air Station on St. Helena Island in Atlantic Ocean would be able to continue operations?

"Given that Cochin is our ally and has our trust, there will be no issues with the station on St. Helena. However, due to the scale of this disaster, it has not yet been determined what will be done with Transvaal's smaller outlying islands. During the coming weeks, it is likely that St. Helena will be either annexed by Arctica or transferred to Cochin."

OOC: Bai Botha. :(
Good luck in RL, hope you return someday.

IC:

The dissolution of Transvaal, a distant outpost somewhere in Africa, barely made the last page of Verdade Socialista. The news coverage was a few lines stating that Transvaal had been impacted with nuclear weapons and subsequently collapsed.
A team of assistants and various liaisons from vital ministries gathered in Vedran's office to gather and organize information, to keep him updated on all important happenings and news coming in. There was an area set off to the side of the office for just this purpose, with couches and tables. Several hours after Vedran had given his speech, four hundred paratroopers fell from the night sky onto the tarmac at Johannesburg's major airports. There was a high proportion of officers among them, as this would be the group to secure entry for the main force, and by extension all aid operations. They entered the terminals and discussed the situation with administration. The airports had to cease non-emergency civilian traffic because a large amount of military and humanitarian traffic would be needing to use the airports, and soon.

As he received the calls from the provincial governors, Vedran was relieved that the authorities were eager to cooperate with his government to establish some semblance of order. He expressed that he was very glad to hear from them, since they were the first Transvaler authorities they had had contact with since the attacks.

Arctica News Service and other media networks kept the world up to date on what was happening. And through a series of official releases as well as the information on its website, the MoFA kept worried Arcticans posted on the status of their loved ones. Many of those who had relatives in Pretoria in specific or Transvaal in general, if they could afford it, took vacations from work and traveled to Mozambique in search of them. Camps were set up in Maputo by the ATDF where Arcticans could gather and await transport home. The camps were the site of many tearful reunions. Some, without relations, decided to check out of the camps and stay in the country.

The Arcticans relied on the provincial and local authorities to cooperate with them, as they did not have the manpower to police and organize all of Transvaal. And by this they hoped that the Transvalers would see that they weren't invaders. Before its dissolution, the national government had given the Arcticans the country, but most of those involved in organizing Arctican efforts considered this as simply authority over the established political system, to help them help themselves.

And although the Arctican government usually disagreed with the Transvalers' policies, they knew that their presence was valuable. They had always closely cooperated in matters of territorial affairs, and now that they were gone, many Arcticans felt alone in the region; the weight of Southern Africa on their shoulders would be a heavy cross to bear. A void had been created that would be difficult to fill, both in the region and in the hearts of many Arcticans who favored close relations with Transvaal.

OOC: I'll continue making posts like this over the next several days, or perhaps longer, to settle the issue of Transvaal's land. St. Helena Island, as I have stated, will either be annexed or more likely handed over to Cochin. I intend to make the mainland a protectorate, but one where Transvaal's historical continuity is respected. The former Transvaal-Arctica territory will either be turned into a protectorate or maintained as an autonomous republic within Arctica. I will most likely annex Mauritius and the Comoros. As for Transvaal's other outlying islands, I am not sure. Botha has requested that Natal be maintained in its current "black land" state, untouchable in honor of a former IG nation. I will try to keep it as it is for as long I keep playing here. It is formally an independent, isolated state and will be granted full protection by Arctica.

It's been great fun and a pleasure RPing with Botha over these past years. It's probably been the longest nation-to-nation RP storyline and diplomatic relationship in CNRP, since we have both been around since the beginning. It's been a lot of threads, interaction, political upheavals, treaties, diplomatic talks, and all-around good RP that I'm sad has come to an end.

I've had a great time, Botha, and I wish you luck. Since you'll still be on the forums, keep in touch. But before you leave CNRP fully, I'd like you to decide what happens to your msjor characters in the near future, at least where they go from here. I won't be taking control over them, since they are yours and you've developed them over all these years. Just if you decide to do some character RP from time to time, we can both be sure of what situation they're in.

MIXED IC/OOC: Over the coming days I will be detailing the fates of the major personae in Transvaal.

Some would have been killed in the blast in Pretoria - but not sure exactly who yet was still there and who made it to Johannesburg when the nuclear strike occured. Obviously the military command was stationed on the front lines - and Annetjie van Matteus, as mentioned earlier, had been under house-arrest on Bouvet Island. So they survived.

I have to admit I was sad to read the death of Anton Dietz, but in the real world people get caught up in such violence and such sad occurances do occur. For those nations with embassies in Pretoria, I will leave it up to the individual nations to detirmine if their ambassadorial staff survived or not. The government issued a warning two days ago about the threat of terrorists, so it would have been very possible to get outside the blast area.

Right now, all that is known is the Staatspresident has died - the rumour going around survivors is he refused to leave Government House and stayed at his desk as Leader of the Nation. There is no way to confirm this, as Government House has been completely levelled to rubble and there were no survivors there.

As well, it is confirmed news commentator Lukas Reitz perished in the attack, as he was in the middle of a live weather broadcast when he got vapourised. Considering the majority of Transvaler television viewers disliked him, it probably became his most popular broadcast to date...

OOC: Yes, Dietz was slowly becoming more of a primary character since most dialogue between Transvaal and Arctica went through him. It would have been nice to see him keep on living, but I hadn't expected a full-on nuclear attack. But I also wanted to show how Arctica took direct losses from the attack on Pretoria, and killing off Dietz was the most dramatic way to do that.

OOC: Agreed - my impression of Deitz is, given the warnings, he would not have left until it was too late. He probably was aware of the strong influence he had with the government in Pretoria - arguably the most influencial foreigner in the whole nation (along with General Peter van Haesten of Tahoe) - that he felt obligated to stay at his post as well as a sense of loyality to his Transvaler colleagues. It was a shock to read, but made for realism, and seemed the most realistic outcome for him.

Sovereign, as requested, we have new updates for you out of Transvaal:

We have just received word that Bloemfontein was hit by a nuclear missile just after midnight local time tonight. We are receiving scattered reports from military units stationed in the outer districts of the the metropolitan area. Casualties are reported to be in the neighbourhood of 3,300 - which is about seven percent of the national population.

We have also learnt the casualties now being reported from the Pretoria attack was around 5,200. That would have been around eleven percent of the nation's entire population. If we add the number of civilians killed from the anarchy and race riots which have stricken some urban areas, we estimate that so far, almost 14,000 people have died so far. That would be almost a quarter of the Republic's civilian population dead.

On a positive note, their military is still trying to hold their ground and maintain resistance. Marshal Cruywagen was able to achieve two decisive victories tonight against the terrorist forces.

And... umm, we have also heard rumours that Field Marshal Malan... was executed. By whom and under whose orders we do not know, but it is a runour we have heard from two separate companies of soldiers that have been deployed out of the Johannesburg Barracks.

We thank you for permitting us to continue operations. Arctica as the legal custodian of former Transvaaler territories has the full rights to determine the fate of St. Helena. In either case we hope you would consider permitting us to continue operating the vital logistical outpost that is NAS St. Helena.

Yours Sincerely,
