Silhouette Posted January 8, 2011 Report Posted January 8, 2011 The self styled General stood at the podium. Below him, a hastily corralled crowd packed the stadium, ready to cheer and yell and shout for the television cameras on demand, but nobody on the outside was meant to know that. Informers belonging to the General were dispersed amongst them, to keep track of any dissent, and to egg on the crowd at the right time. The General had come to this situation gradually, through the inevitable accumulation of wealth that came part and parcel of forcibly taking over the country's largest gold consortium. Before long, he had a significant army at his disposal, and even now, they were scouring the northern regions, claiming the territory in the name of his new republic, the peoples new republic. 'My friends, my countrymen, my brothers and sisters. Today is a great day. Today, we reclaim what is ours by right. Today, we come out of the shadows, the poverty, the anarchy that has stopped our nation's heart. Even as I speak, our army is reforming our borders. Once again, we can be an independent nation, not some client state in a corrupt and racist empire. We can be strong. With our resources, our manpower, and most of all, our collective force of will, we can become a bright star on the African continent, a model of peace and prosperity for all to aspire towards. But to do this, I am pleading for your help, my friends. Your country needs you, whether in our armed forces, or our state industry, no job is unimportant to our eventual success. From the sales clerk to the company president, all are but cogs in a grand machine, and every cog helps that machine run with greater efficiency. So I ask you now, to lend your hands towards making our nation great. It will be a long, hard road, but together, we shall overcome, and take our place in this league of nations." *Applause* The General waved down the crowd, but despite all this, it took several minutes before he could make himself heard once again. "Now, to those other nations who may be watching this, to those who care about our lowly nation, in the arm pit of Africa, I say this. Do not pass judgement in haste. Judge us not by our words or your preconceptions, but by our actions from this point on.Should the international community, or their media, wish to know more, we will consider every question presented to us, and will answer those that we can. The Peoples' Free Revolutionary Republic of Nigeria looks forward to working closely with you all. Thank you." The General moved to the rear of the stage to an awaiting auto-mobile, once safely inside, he lit a foul cigar. "Excellent, now that is done, tell me, Colonel, how are our troops doing in the north?" "They are making good time, sir. The border posts should be manned within 48 hours. Very little resistance has been encountered, mostly from the Islamic Separatists in those areas, and it has been overcome with little trouble." "Good. Colonel, make sure your commanders in the field know to show the enemy no mercy. If they get in our way, we will eliminate them." --- Along with the television broadcast, an image was sent out, showing the claims of the republic, in theory at least. It was unlikely that fully control would be achieved for several months yet. Quote

Silhouette Posted January 12, 2011 Author Report Posted January 12, 2011 As a nation, we are thankful to every nation which has granted us diplomatic recognition at this point, and hope that even those who have not addressed us directly will do likewise. We would gladly take up the Zarmonian Federation's offer of closer relations between our two nations. If you wish to send a representative to Lagos, we would happily host him, so that you may learn more about our nation, and our way of life. *Private cabinet meeting* "That is beside the point! what good is a strong military if barely more than half of our population can read and write? Why defend a nation of illiterates. This should be our highest priority!" "That's a load of crap Obasi and you know it? What about our infrastructure? A strong military could provide many strong hands to improve our roads and utilities. How many lives could accessible fresh water save?" "We don't have enough money, we need to raise taxes!" "And what will the people pay with? There first born son? You're crazy we need to improve our export capacity. We need trade, and we need to increase production. We have gold, and plenty of it. What if...?" "But..." "ENOUGH!!" The General's outburst was enough to silence the riot of voices. Nobody wanted to be on his bad side. It could lead to a shorter life, and a rather painful death. "What I am hearing is that we don't have enough money to build roads, and that the people don't have enough money to pay taxes. Am I right so far? So we can't have them working for the government, since we can't afford to pay them, yes? It seems to me then, that we need foreign investment. As the good trade minister said, we need to increase our trade output, but we have no money to do so, so we must convince someone to part with their hardly earned money, in the hope of making much more. We need results soon my friends. I do not want to be the leader of a bankrupt nation. I'll see all your heads on stakes before I let that happen? Am I making myself understood?" Around the table, heads nodded emphatically, and a few forced smiles were exchanged. "Good, you are dismissed. Get out of my sight." The General turned back to the Colonel, standing menacingly at his right shoulder. "How are the troops progressing General?" "The majority have reached their border stations. We are waiting only on the group at Lake Chad to report in before the borders are secure." "And the rebels?" The General inquired, his voice laced with a false calm "They have been dealt with harshly sir, they are no longer a problem." "Excellent." *** Public broadcast The Republic of Nigeria is searching for sponsors to aid in the extraction of large quantities of gold ore.
