Survival Without an Alliance: Possible?

Would a budding new nation such as mine be able to survive in this game without the help of an alliance? Will I be able to support my nation financially? In other words, will my nation even survive?

Opinions and tips are appreciated. If you think a nation can't survive, please state why, and if you think a nation can survive without an alliance, please explain as well, and tell me what I can do to survive as an individual country.

Thanks a bunch.

By tech raid he means people will declare war on your nation and steal your tech (and land and destroy your infrastructure) through ground attacks.

It is incredibly difficult, pretty much impossible, to successfully grow your nation without an alliance.

PS - :frogout: to anybody that's going to say 'you can't define success'

It will be hard, but if you're committed to it you can try. Here are some tips:

Do not stay on the AA "None", change it to a random Alliance name, that doesn't exist but sounds official. Either that or a random collection of letters (NGruiwnutih)

Put in your AA that you are protected by an alliance (make the name up, and MAKE SURE this alliance does not exist (if you're truly serious about going it 'alone'))

Maintain the largest army possible, 75% of citizens or something. If you want to collect the most, sell some during collection only. You will pay more in bills but not too much more.

Do tech deals. The pros of this are you get money and grow faster, and someone has an investment in you and will be on "your side" if you get raided. They can't do much if you're not in an alliance, but they can be angry with you :P The cons of this are you show on on the foreign aid screen and can be found by raiders that way, and it will be hard to find buyers since you are unaligned.

Stay in Defcon 1/Threat level 1 unless you are collecting. Ideally try to pick up enough money to be able to backcollect for 10 days, and on collecting go to Def5.

Keep a very low amount of technology on you, but keep enough money to buy 100 tech at least if someone attacks and keeps fighting beyond the first 2 Ground Attacks. Keep a low amount of land on you. These things are what raiders look for, they want to steal these things. Make yourself unattractive.
Good luck if you try this! Once you get nukes it'll become easier to keep raiders off, by saying they will get nuked for 7 days if they try :P

I have to say, it's a lot easier to survive without an alliance affiliation once you've grown a lot and have nuclear weapons. Until that time, it's best to find an alliance. If the reason you don't want to be in an alliance is due to politics, just don't get involved in it more than you have to to be a member. If it's because you don't want to have to war, there are neutral alliances which (theoretically) avoid that.

Seeing as a nation cannot be "destroyed", every nation will be able to survive. However, you will likely be on the receiving end of many more wars (even if you follow iMatt's useful advice), and your economy will suffer as a result of the increased military upkeep you will be forced to pay.

Here's another question, what if you were to select a huge alliance from the drop down menu without "officially" joining them? Raiders wouldn't attack you and you wouldn't have to be involved with the alliance right?

Yes, but alliances have a habit of attacking nations that ghost them. Raiders may not hit you, but the alliance you never actually joined likely will.

Wonderful ideas. However the truth is this: tech raiders check the AA's. If its under five people, you pretty much will get killed anyway. Unless you stay in peace mode all day like a hippie (which will destroy your nation anyway), you're doomed. Just join a big alliance like MHA or NPO and sit back and do nothing.

Yes, but then you are a member of their AA, and can get destroyed in an alliance war anyway. Are there any huge alliances that stay out of wars?

Yes, neutral alliances. However, in order to do this, their membership is understandably limited in the public expressions they can take on world events and politics, in order to maintain the alliance's neutrality.

The only current alliances I know of which have declared their neutrality are the Green Protection Agency, the Democratic Order, and the Green Old Party. (I'm not affiliated with or recommending any of these alliances, I'm just listing them for your benefit.)

What's the point of playing this terrible nation simulator if you don't join an alliance? Don't get me wrong I love the game but making friends and being apart of a community is what makes this game appealing. Honestly how boring it would be be just to build pixels......

Besides raiders will find you whatever you do anyway :smug:

Either be a very strong nation with lots of military and nukes or just keep your nation armed with everything, especially troops and aircraft. People do not dare raid heavily armed people.

Don't listen to this guy, trust me I see guys with tons of mil get raided all the time. :P

What MvP said. I thought TDO was in a war though? Anyways, you can just switch your AA during war. If you're inactive enough on the forums and don't report in for the war, they may not notice...otherwise you'll just have to suck it up and grow a pair.

Then they must not be very big then. I've gone out alone a bunch of times and it's been smooth sailing.

And then the raider gets seven nukes shoved into his or her face, destroying all of the current and previous gains. :awesome:

If you leave an alliance during war, without telling them, they are probably going to notice. If they don't, they are incompetent and you shouldn't go back regardless. :)

It is also likely to get you branded as a coward/traitor/possible spy. I wouldn't invite you into an alliance if I knew you had that kind of history.
