Californian
Reporting from Grand Falls, Atlantis Atlantis Associated Press The first ever congressional elections are one week from today, and representatives from the main political parties have agreed to a joint press conference where they will discuss their platforms and answer questions from you, the voter. Moderator Neil Jackson will be giving a brief introduction to each party and its basic policies and objectives from a prepared statement already provided. The heads of each political party will then be available to any question from an Atlantis citizen. No question is off limits. In addition, color commentators Frederik Erickson and Alejandro Jimenez will provide exclusive access and insights to the discussion as it proceeds tonight. As a reminder, here is the breakdown of how Directorate seats will be allocated. Each state is divided into congressional districts based on the number of Directors it is allowed to elect. Progressive Unity Party (PUP) The Progressive Unity Party is based on the ideals of fraternity and freedom. We believe that a strong government is needed in order to provided for citizens of all walks of life, rich or poor, successful or sick. In fact, the PUP believe a universal healthcare style needs to be implemented to ensure all Atlantis citizens are properly cared for. In addition, we support welfare and social security pension programs to ensure that even the most desperate of our people maintain human dignity. We are champions of the individual, and believe each person is able to make their own decisions; as a result we support abortions, LGBT rights, and marijuana usage, all decisions that should be made by the individual. Economically, corporations and business pose the greatest threat to our society and need careful regulation. In order to allow the government to help all citizens, citizens will be taxed on a sliding scale so the less fortunate give little while the rich people who can give more do so. In terms of military, the PUP believe in a moderately sized military able to defend Atlantis and our allies. Strongholds: Florida, Newfoundland, New Brunswick Political Spectrum: Left Alejandro: This is by far the most popular party in areas of the country with many citizens in the lower classes who have become disillusioned with those in the higher tiers. Very few seem to voice support for a communist style government, however quite a few seem to like the idea of a socialist oriented society where everyone is cared for, something some consider to be a purpose of the government. Liberty Party (LP) The Liberty Party is just that, a party designed for the liberty and well-being of our people and nation. A nation requires a healthy combination of individual rights, government powers, and corporate interests. Individuals have the ability to determine what is right for themselves and their family, and as such personal decisions such as abortion and gun rights should not face interference from the state. Likewise the government should not be all powerful but should provide a welfare program for only the people that truly need it, as a humanitarian offering for down on their luck citizens to get back on their feet, able to once again contribute. Economically, the people should pay appropriate and reasonable taxes for the upkeep of the government and our military, to ensure it can deal with anyone that threatens our nation or allies. Business should be encouraged to grow in a relatively unobtrusive way, however certain parameters and regulations are needed to ensure fair competition between companies. Finally, we believe that the nation advances and innovates from a contribution of all citizens and we encourage cooperation amongst all parties and cultures. Strongholds: Florida, Prince Edward Island, North Carolina Political Spectrum: Center-Left Frederik: This is currently the party polling the best so far in this race and they've done a great job employing a technique that has drawn the support of thousands. By comparing the other major parties to the Republican and Democratic parties of old, parties whose partisanship disillusioned citizens with the democratic process, the Liberty Party is promoting itself as a more centrist party willing to negotiate to ensure that deadlocks do not destroy this nation. Conservative Coalition (CC) The Conservative Coalition is a party dedicated to ensuring the values of tradition and the family. The family unit is the most important part of any civilization and we believe that it should be safeguarded from all threats, included vices such as abortion and pornography. Additionally, the greatest threat to our well-being is a large, cumbersome and inefficient government that takes advantage of its powers and its people. We believe that all people are able to make their own success and should be allowed to reap the rewards of whatever path they follow. Citizens should not hand over their hard earned money in welfare and health-care programs to those that are lazy or unwilling to contribute to society. Instead, deregulation should be used to encourage laissez-faire capitalism and associated policies in our beautiful country. The death penalty is an effective tool to lower crime, along with curbing deviant behaviors such as illicit drugs and homosexual behaviors. Finally, we believe in a moderately sized but extremely strong military designed to stop any foreign and domestic threat. Strongholds: Breton, Nova Scotia Political Spectrum: Right Alejandro: The Conservative Coalition is making a brilliant move here Frederik. This party has slowly been dropping in the polls and its looking for a comeback. With the recent annexation of the Breton and Nova Scotia states, which analysts consider "ulta-conservative," the party is attempting to appeal to this large audience and draw votes in during the election. United Islanders Party (UIP) The United Islanders Party is a party formed to deal with the numerous problems facing our nation, particularly with our island states. With increasing pollution and waste from our increasingly industrial society, steps must be taken to ensure the preservation of our fragile environment including our beaches, rivers, forests, and oceans. This will only benefit our two most important economic sectors: tourism and fishing. These sectors, a traditional part of our nation, provide thousands with jobs and need to be protected at all costs. In addition, the UIP favors a strong government capable of providing for all of its citizens, as well as strong infrastructure and transportation to link the nation's many cultures and lands. Indeed, each culture is a welcome way to provide diversity and satisfaction to our nation, and we should provide methods that accommodate as many as possible, including LGBT rights. As for a military, we support a military able to protect our numerous island assets. Strongholds: Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, Cayman Islands Political Spectrum: Left Alejandro: This party normally does well in the Caribbean island states, but its interesting to point out the emphasis on promoting growth in the fishing sector. For the first time the party will be running candidates in Maritime states such as Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, and I think the party is attempting to reach to these potential voters by promising support in one of their main economic sectors. Not very risky, but a potentially brilliant move. Partie du Francais (PF) The Partie du Francais is a party who advocates the celebration and continued support for our nation's authentic French heritage. The PF has successfully advocated for the addition of French as a national language and we believe programs should be put in place to encourage and support native French speakers and its popularity as a second language. We also wish to see renewed vigor in French customs and traditions throughout our nation from government to gourmet cooking. We believe that better relations with Francophone nations, specifically Louisiana, Disparu, and France, are essential to maintain Atlantis' identity. Finally, we support the gradual replacement of the government, inherently inefficient from bureaucracy and democracy, to a form of constitutional monarchy to ensure that all are cared for by the government. We believe this new system of government would provide a much needed larger military to defend ourselves and our interests, as well as create a government effective at ruling and controlling the people. Strongholds: Magdalen Islands, Saint Pierre and Miquelon Political Spectrum: Right Frederik: You see Alejandro, the PF wins solid majorities in the Magdalens and Saint-Pierre every election, due to the ethnic ties no doubt. The problem is convincing the rest of the nation they aren't crazy, something they still haven't quite been able to achieve. In a historic election where the party is running candidates in more districts than ever before, it remains to be seen if voters will vote how this party wants them to. Native Rights Party (NRP) The Native Rights Party is a political party designed to highlight and resolve the current issues facing Atlantis First Nation natives. In a nation and world increasingly focused on new technology and information, we must be careful to ensure that we provide and care for the elders and people who previously inhabited these lands. Their way of life and culture need to be preserved so that they can provide inspiration for future generations without the fear of dying out. Specifically, rituals and traditions that have persevered for centuries need to continue in the face of any obtrusive law or regulation that may exist. Though oftentimes unintentional, the stereotyping and prejudice against native peoples needs to be made a more national issue and dealt with so that all people may experience the equality and freedom prided by our wonderful nations. Strongholds: Lower Greenland, Newfoundland Political Spectrum: Center Frederik: This is by far the smallest of the six main parties. Ironically, it's also the most popular with almost 85% approval ratings, with only major environmentalists groups really criticizing it. The real problem is its inability to impact the majority of the people in this nation. Most citizens sympathize with the natives plight and agree equality is guaranteed, but consider a vote for this party a waste when it could be used for a much more competitive party. Mr. Frank McMullen of the PUP, Mr. Joald Donaldson of the LP, Mr. Sean O'Spatula of the CC, Mr. Henry Goodluck of the UIP, Mr. Paul-Henri Lefèvre of the PF, and Ms. Alasie Tulugaq of the NRP are now available to answer your questions. OOC: Please feel free to ask questions as if you were an Atlantis citizen (ie not as your own government, however you fan ask questions relating to your nation if you wish). The poll results will not decide the election, however they will heavily influence it. You can vote for as many as you wish, but note that voting for all three in the same question essentially voids your vote.

Shatner
OOC: I think I may have misunderstood your phrasing and I'm on a phone so I can't edit posts, so sorry for the double post. IC: Question from a conservative Nova Scotian, "This question is for the PUP; will you alter our foreign policy concerning conservative or nationalist states, like those in the former protectorates?" It was easy to tell from his Irish accent that he used to be Tahoan, explaining his concern for former countrymen. OOC: EDIT-Fixed, got to a computer. JEDCJT
OOC: In response to this wholly unprovoked nuclear attack by Atlantis, the Ministry of War and Defense issued a declaration of 'derp' and ordered retaliation. Soon, nuclear missiles were flying toward Atlantis cities and towns, where they would magically avoid air defenses. At the same time, massive forces stormed across the border and converged upon the New Brunswick capital of Fredericton and St. John. Troops were airlifted into all major cities and towns across Atlantis, where they seized all of them without firing a shot. Soon, Atlantis was conquered and annexed into the uber empire that is J Andres. hawt, no? IC: "We congratulate the admission of the territories into Atlantis, and announce our support for the Progressive Unity Party (PUP). Like pie? Like?! We love pie! It is not a lie, like cake." - J Andrean Government "A question to all candiates: what do you think of J Andres? And more importantly, do you think J Andrean babes are hawt? Ok, seriously, what are your plans in the foreign relations sphere regarding J Andres once you are elected?" - Anchor Times Reporter

We would like to see some much-needed socialism sprout and take root, however we do believe in respecting others' sovereignty. However I would definitely ensure that we hold discussions with states from the former protectorate regardless of their leanings, and we could possibly try to subtly suggest beneficial changes that could be implemented to increase another nation's prosperity and standards of living." "Since when did we let foreign reporters in? Ah oh well... he's already asked a question..." Frank McCullen: We like having good relations with J Andres because they are neighbors and allies. The technology they possess is marvelous and inspiring, if Atlantis teamed up with J Andres we could bring new advancement and well-being to all of our citizens. Joald Donaldson: Obviously no one up here is going to criticize J Andres. They allowed half of our nation to form Atlantis and many of our people still feel a positive connection with them. I hope to continue our good relations with J Andres, but I do believe we need to tread carefully. That place has a habit of turning bad, do I need to remind all of the former Northern Republic citizens about the FSA? Sean O'Spatula: Aye, one of our top priorities will be to improve relations with J Andres. We approve of their social policies, especially the recent Neighborhood Watch program they set up. What better way to make sure we are raising our kids and family in a safe and secure environment than having neighbors that watch and report in to the government?
