Prelude to War

"Sir, GLP trucks approaching." A Coruscantan Engineer Brigade, assigned to protect and maintain Sentry guns on the GLP border, watched as several GLP trucks began cruising towards the border access zone. "They look military, but I can't tell from here. Get me some binoculars." The other soldier quickly followed his orders and grabbed a pair from a supply table. "Here you go sir." The officer peered through the binoculars, and watched the trucks draw closer. "Trucks are civilian. Deactivate Sentries." "Right away sir." The order was relayed to the other Sentry guns and one by one, they stopped beeping but continued on their 45-degree angle sweep. "First truck approaching." The GLP truck slowed down to a halt as a Coruscantan official checked their passes. One of the Sentries beeped...and opened fire on the truck, the 500 rounds ripping through anything that got in it's way. "STOP THOSE SHAB SENTRIES! STOP THEM NOW, THOSE ARE CIVILIANS YOU SHABUIR!" About five minutes later, the convoy had been torn to shreds, the fire only stopping because the Sentry had expended all 500 of it's rounds, it attempting to target the last truck but only making a clicking noise. "Get on the radio to Command, and get this shab Sentry out of my sight!"

*Public Transmission*
"In what can be described as only an extreme and unfortunate glitch, one of our Sentry guns, without cause and without orders, opened fire on a GLP civilian vehicle. We deeply regret the loss of GLP life and will pay any amount to the GLP and the victim's families. Our Army scientists are looking into the cause of the Sentry malfunction and the Sentry unit has been disabled and taken away from the frontlines. Again, Coruscanta deeply regrets the loss of life and is willing to pay reparations for this unfortunate event."

Shortly before the shooting, inside one of GLP's weapon testing ground that is 30 miles away from the border:

"This is GLP military airspace command. B-1 Pounder, you are clear to fire the AGP missile at the target."

"Order accepted, firing the missile."

Air to Ground Pulverizer missile is dropped from the B-1 Pounder's bomb dropping bay, turns on the rocket engine, and rapidly accelerate to a red bulls eye target that looked like an ant from the B-1 Pounder pilot's view

"This is testing ground 1, missile is stable, nothing wrong. It is locking onto the target."

Suddenly, the missile does a corkscrew spin several times, flies toward the Coruscanta border and rapidly accelerates

"OH WHAT THE -bleep-?!?! STOP THAT MISSILE NOW! IT WANT IT TO TARGET THE BULLS EYE TARGET, NOT FLY OFF THE FACILITY!!!!"

"Missile is unresponsive. Data reports revealed that the targeting system have suddenly been corrupted due to a faulty memory stick."

"KILL IT! KILL IT!"

"I can't! The missile's wireless receiver is down! All I am getting are data reports from it indicating that the faulty memory stick had lead to various software errors. Darn it, the messages are all garbled now, I can't read what is is saying."

"I want a F-10 Interceptor jet to go in and shoot that rogue missile down, NOW! That thing is a flying time bomb!"

"Its too late now, the missile has reached mach 6, faster than our F-10 Interceptor jets, and is still accelerating..."

"-bleep-!"
----------------------------------
The AGP missile hurtled past the Coruscanta's border and over a city at mach 7. The targeting system on board randomly locked onto a random building and begin accelerate until it hit mach 9. A split second later, it smashed into the building and a massive explosion erupted, leveling an entire city block and damaged other buildings around it. Anyone that was caught in the blast were killed or severely injured.
----------------------------------
Public transmission from GLP's government:

A few minutes ago at the Canadian Shield Weapon Testing Facility, an experimental missile went rogue, became unresponsive though still sent data reports (which later became garbled) to the ground station, flew outside of the facility and randomly targeted a city in Coruscanta. The cause of the missile's problem was a faulty memory stick that lead to various software errors. We regret the loss of innocent people's lives.

Classified

The Royal Navy deployed to just off the coast of Coats Island and five B-2 bomber squadrons aswell as five squadrons of F-15E and five squadrons of F-22 fighters were made ready to defend Canadian interests or retaliate from stray ordenance.

Two Battleships, Two battlecruisers, two frigates and two corvettes went to DEFCON 3 and dropped Anchor.

Public

The Imperium is saddened by the loss of life on both sides, but is bewildered as to how both cases seem to be...mechanical faults.

We feel sorry for these tragedies and the victims' families, and we hope that the causes of the mechanical failures be determined.

Classified

Border security is to be tightened, ground forces are to be moved to the border, Luftwaffe patrols are to be intensified, the Naval Patrol Boats are to patrol up and down the Imperial coast, and Anti-Aircraft positions are on heightened alert, as the DEFCON level is lowered to 3, and the Imperial Military is put on alert in the wake of the tragedies, which could cause war to erupt on the IHR's very doorstep.

The missile hit it's mark alright...the Parliament Building in Kyr'tsad, Coruscanta's capital. Fortunately, Kazimir and his cabinet were not present, but Parliament was having a meeting at the time, causing the deaths of over 100 individuals. Around Parliament, a block of land was razed leading to nearly 300 killed.

The Isara Alliance has made a mental note never to purchase military equipment from the GLP or Coruscanta.
Also, we send our condolensces to both nations for the losses.
"The Sentry's fault can be pinned on a faulty switch and operator error. The missile's malfunction is inexcusable. We demand the GLP turn over missiles for testing to ensure that no more "accidents" like this one happens again."

***Private, inside Kazimir Trentino's personal home in Kyr'tsad***
"Damn it all! Kazimir, we must go to war! No, I DEMAND we go to war this INSTANT! Hell, we're mobilized, and our armies are already on the border!"
"Xarles, calm yourself. We can't toy with the lives of men. This isn't one of your war games."
"Did the engineers ever explain what happened to that Sentry?"
"The Engineer Corps place blame on faulty target systems, probably a bug exclusive to that unit. But the razing of Parliament...that's something that can't be a fault."
"Alright, let's wait. I want to see if the GLP are truly willing to attack us. If they don't, we will strike first. The loss of Parliament and the men inside will make all of Coruscanta cry for war. I realize we killed their civilians too, but that wasn't on the scale we lost."
"...Of course, Director."

That was our only experimental missile that we launched. Other missiles that we currently have didn't have any fatal malfunctions, were used by other country(s), and most are short ranged. Also, your sentry gun had an error, so did our experimental missile. We will no longer test experimental missiles with payloads in them and will repay 400% of the damages done.

If you wish to test dozens of missiles ranging from anti-tank to fuel-to-air missiles, go ahead. We will send them to you with supervisors to make sure that you do not copy our missiles.

"You cannot repay us. At least, you can't give us back over a hundred dead Parliament members or over 300 civilians, now can you? If your own neighbors can't trust you with missiles, why should the world? If your missiles pass our tests, you can keep them. Otherwise, they will be destroyed.

You have 24 (OOC: IC hours) hours to hand the missiles to the Coruscanta Army. The clock starts now."

6 hours later, a B-77 Heavy bomber jet flew toward Coruscanta loaded with samples of their missiles (two missiles for each class of missiles) and missile launchers along with three F-10 Falcon heavy fighter jets as escorts. As they flew close to the border, they sent a radio message, "This is GLPAF, we are flying to Kyr'tsad's airport, requesting permission to enter your airspace."

"We extend our condolences to both nations. We, however, wonder why both nations dont just enter into some deals with J Andres? That way, they would receive Andrean hardware and/or technology, which is the finest in the North American continent. JTech, the largest tech corporation in the nation, would be interested in brokering such a deal with both nations."

The Holy American Empire is not pleased. All ships of both nations will be stopped 20 nautical miles out of Imperial Waters to be checked in order to head off any 'malfunctions' which may occur.

Considering that there are no shipping routes near the HAE, this is unnecessary.

Somewhere in D.C... William Caudill applied palm to face as he read the news about his neighbors. "As if there wasn't enough conflict already int his hemisphere.."

Johnson chuckled, "Going to be a long week, Sir.. want some coffee?" The VP had just poured himself a glass of steaming black coffee.

"No thanks, Jeff. With the Peace Conference coming up and two wars on our borders.. I'm going to be wired as it is." He just shook his head."I'd better make a statement."

Jeff nodded, "I'll have the secretary call the corps together."

Hours later in the White House press room...

We sympathize with our neighbors in GLP and Coruscanta for their tragic losses. However, due to the causes being mechanical on both sides.. we want to encourage calm. We are aware both sides have had significant casualties.. and that there is no replacement for what each of you have lost, but a war will only make matters worse.

The United States has extremely high.. what we call "Six Sigma" manufacturing methods we use for our weapons and fairly large tracts of land for the safe testing of weapons. We would encourage both sides to consider our our plains testing ranges as a location to safely field test and refine your weapons. Our quality engineers will also teach you the same methodology which will allow your equipment to function as desired.. 99.996% of the time. And when they do fail, it won't be in an environment where they'll cause catastrophic damage.

If any of you have questions, please feel free to contact my office through the appropriate channels. I'm now open for questions from the press corps.
ooc: As with most of my press corps announcements if you have any questions, please feel free to play your state or private press. There are no media restrictions in the U.S..

The four aircraft landed on the landing path and taxied to the location for the missile pickup. As soon as the B-77 Heavy bomber came to a stop, a door opened on the side, ladder rolled down the siding, and workers came climbing out as the bomb bays opened up. A long chain of various types of missiles tied together were slowly lowered onto the tarmac for pickup.

A Courscantan truck would drive by, pick some of the missiles up and carefully tie them into place on the bed, shortly joined by several other trucks. After several hours, the missiles would be tested at a range, far away from any civilian center.

***Private***
"So, what were the results of the tests?"
"They all passed the tests."
"Perfect...well, results can be easy to fabricate, correct?"
"Yes...I will get to work on it right away Director."

"After countless tests, all missiles have been deemed by Coruscantan engineers and scientists to be completely unfit for military use, and thus they shall be destroyed. We thank the GLP for allowing the use and destruction of it's missiles."

CNN representative: "What is the USA's view on the massive Sentry gun glitch? Would your nation employ the weapons as is or modify them to your liking?"

Along with initial border troops, the 8th Motorized, 1st Artillery Corps and 3rd Armored Car units were sent.

Total lies! We tested these missiles ourselves over 100 times for each type of missile and they all functioned perfectly well! We demand videotapes of your testing, we have our own videotapes!

If our missiles were truly pieces of crud, then why would we use missiles that would reduce our military's efficiency and pose a risk of friendly fire?

A videotape is then played, showing over 1000 tests on all types of missiles used by GLP military
NATIONAL SECURITY REASONS?! Those are OUR missiles and we deserve the right to see OUR missiles operate. Those are NOT YOUR MISSILES! We gave them to you for testing and we want to see if you are telling the truth or just being a pure pain in the rear. Is your facility is a giant single room? I don't think so. You tested those missiles in separate rooms away from your other stuff, right? If not, it would be surprising for you to not mention that some of your stuff got toasted or torn up by our high explosive quick burn napalm missiles and fragmentation missiles.

On the contrary, none of the missiles were tested indoors. The facility we are talknig about is an outdoors testing ground. This can be confirmed with satellite imagery showing explosions occurring throughout the day.
Then why leave your valuable stuff lying outside where they can be hit by shrapnel? You can always edit the testing videos and censor stuff that you don't want us to see.
