The Althing Opens

The Reichstag's parliament section finally opens after decades of being closed, finally the dust is removed and the large room readied, the Althing is swiftly prepared and after every member officially accepts their position, things are ready to start. The Martencists have taken the places on the left side, while the rest of the ideologies are grouped up on the right section, clustered according to allegiance.

The first session was simple, an oath to serve the Fatherland and a brief military ceremony outside. The majority of those in the right side attempted to put forth several reformist projects, varying from extreme reforms to things that may well be reasonable changes. Some of these changes attempted to do things such as modifying the German Flag back to the black-red-gold, a process of de-nordlandization, introducing censorship to Germany and more - but all of these were blocked not only by the Martencists but by a minority of other Right Parties.

However, there were other initiatives which met better ends. The Rational Communists had put forth two initiatives stating that it would be on Germany's best interests to look into the economic system proposed by said ideology as applied in the south to see if it can be adapted to Germany itself, and a diplomatic reapproachment to Southern Germany. These were not blocked, but instead supported by Martencism and thusly passed.

The result is that a smaller amount of forces will be stationed in the southern border, and that the diplomatic staff will try to eventually work things out to provide some sort of regional integration. The first initiative is the offer to GDR to provide a local embassy and to send an Ambassador if needed, to then discuss things. From there, things could be further worked out to diminish tensions, even though these were already less than before. Specialists on Rational Communist economy have been called by Chancellor Martens in order to better analyze the situation, and other specialists have been put forth to analyze the best way to help peace.

Finally, there was a motion to depart from PEPTO, but proved to be very impopular. Because of this, PEPTO membership was ratified, and the signature of the President together with the Althing seal of approval were forwarded through the Exterior Ministry.

The motion to annex Luxemburg was passed. The territory had been traded by Deutscher Bund for the Francophonic parts of the Helvetian Region, and Germany as the protectors of DB had been entitled to obtain Luxemburg after the government's final collapse. Reportedly, French authorities were contacted privately beforehand in order to make sure to prevent needless drama. In a ceremony, the territory was added and a small military parade held. Almost no dissent was seen, and those who disagreed were offered a relatively large sum of money if they wished to relocate outside of Germany. The majority of the people welcomed the Stahlhelms with German Flags and Luxemburgish Flags with an added Odal.

An interesting first day, with tension but minimal difficulties.

From now on, although it is assumed that Althing sessions happen daily, only major events will be reported from it.

A week later after various stalemates, new consensus is reached. Different proposals are passed, one for requesting embassies to Rebel Army, who are believed to be the most important reason why Germany survived the would-have-been HRE onslaught. A protocol was established to explore the possibility of seeking a treaty with that nation. It was also decided to establish diplomatic contact with Dalmatia, although the goals are less clear, some debate that they should attempt to look after or protect the Germans' rights within Dalmatia, while others believe that it is better to simply respect what the nation does. Dierik Martens has called for flexibility, has called for time to allow Dalmatia to rule itself "Jumping to conclussions would be rushed. They will likely not neglect any of their Nationalities".

A project to make Germany's immigration policies more open was blocked completely, and another one to make it adopt free-market policies failed as well when it was argued that this would destabilize the nation, and that the decades of a closed economy and society made it impossible to open it up all of a sudden without needless stress. Furthermore, further research on new Economic Alternatives had been ordered already, and the Right was told to await its results by the Martencists.

Lastly, in spite of the failure to make the borders more open, a simplification on the Visa Process for tourism and business was passed, quoting that the excessive bureaucracy behind it had been merely an artifact created to further close the borders during the post-Nordland years, which had the Government become very paranoid. "We must not look past our borders with fears. Just the fact that the entirety of our borders are fortified and walled speaks this clearly. We must treat them like equals, not like potential enemies."

A new Althing meeting: Looking towards the Far North

Since the Althing cannot ever seem to agree to change any matters regarding inner policies, FA continues to be the focus, for in that sector there's reasonable middle grounds between the different factions. An initiative was passed to approach Finland with the aim of undoing the Demilitarized Zone, in a both practical and symbollic gesture to truly try and leave behind the hostility seen throughout the last years.

Additionally, it was mentioned that cooperation on matters regarding Military Research would be proposed to the Republican Ãœbersteinianists. Join Finnish-German research was said to be a possibility, both for defense and for profit, however *what* exactly would be developed is at this time a secret matter, which we cannot inform about.

The first Southern German Tourists arrive to take pictures at the Brandenburg Gate and at Asgaard, and are for the most part welcomed although a few conservative figures prefer to simply steer away from them.

And so, plans are set in motion instantly. Plans to dismantle the DMZ had been available and complete since the Tambarskjelve administration, but due to continued hostility, they had not been enacted. Now that the Finnish agree, the work begins carefully, as there are plenty of mines. However, the place where each has been planted has been recorded, so zero casualties are expected.

Finland, having practiced using set minefield patterns, was able to clean up the mine fields fairly quickly, and re-opened bridges between the two countries, the first time there had been a way to cross the river in a long time.

And Germans have suggested a brand new concept for an Antitank Armored Vehicle. We should set a place where we can work together. We may even be able to later sell both designs to different countries. Fifty fifty.

We will allow German engineers into our testing facilities at the Aland Islands.

The developers were sent, but what happened from there onwards would not be published.

---------------

German Engineers have developed a scheme to be able to navally bypass Lübeck in the eventuality that it may be needed for the Kriegsmarine to defend Iceland while a neutral Lübeck blocks passage. Already-built channels are shown in blue, but the new projected channel is in red. Approval has been given for naval military passage through the Dutch section of the river, in the rest of the way, since it forms the German-Lübeck border, the Germans will stay on their half of the river.

It is expected for this to begin in a month.

A convoy of government and civilian ships has arrived to Heligoland, an Island long unclaimed by any country due to its small size and the loss of its old strategic relevance. The small but beautiful Island is abandoned, and some houses are still standing after the territory was abandoned when the Nordland collapse led to economic difficulties which prompted people to go to different countries. So quickly had it been left that still a few old ships were found, and even some old Nordland equipment, such as a Nordland flag on a pole - very old, and damaged.

The Germans moved forth and changed that flag for their own, and looked around. The Houses are to be demolished and rebuilt, although not many are to be allowed. A few corpses of people who refused to leave the island have been found, quite decayed. They have been since burnt accordingly to German tradition.

Regarding the military, it was mentioned that only a small police force would be there. The Althing has decided to make the region a non-military zone due to its importance in Germanic Religion and due to its unusual natural beauty, it will be, like Asgaard, cultural centers.

Germany seems to continue with a new brand of expansionism, definately more peaceful than all of its previous incarnations, having added small sectors of land without violence over the beginnings of the Martens Administration.

In other news, the Althing approved a Government effort which stemmed from a civilian initiative to provide assistance to the neighboring French Nation after it suffered a National Catastrophe which sent it back to the stone age for several weeks. (OOC, He had his nation reset)

Contact had been established with the Government to help the situation improve. The idea is to help both the Frenchmen and the Germans and Nordlanders - former Rheimarkers which have found themselves forced to be annexed by the French State.

The Demos Consolidate

After roughly a year of arguments between the different Pro-Democratic Factions, the announcement of the merger of their parties has been made public. Currently this will have little impact on the Parliament, as distribution continues to be the same - Martencists still have enough power to block any Demo Initiatives, and so do the Demos, while the significative RatCom minority, unattached to ideals, change their stances on an issue per issue basis, sometimes agreeing with the Martencists and sometimes with the Demos depending on the context, being the most pragmatic and less idealistic group.

The Martencists and RatComs have pointed their fingers towards the Democrats once that, two days after the merger announcement six corpses were found to be identified with former leaders of the weaker democratic faction, in what appears to be a violent politically motivated crime never seen before since the Silver. Chancellor Martens has launched an investigation into the situation, as the dead were known to oppose the Democratic Merger within their own Democratic Parties.

Since then, Martencists and Ratcoms have both tried to push forwards several initiatives, but in each turn the Demos would leave the Althing, preventing issues from being handled. After a week of such attitude, the Chancellor, with endorsement from the RatCom Central Council, has passed a decret forbidding departure from the Althing during sessions and setting a minimum assistance quota, which has stirred much opposition from the Demos, who in the end, have decided to vote "no" to each and every initiative, waiting out the last year for the upcoming ellections which they hope to win.

Already a large propaganda campaign has started for the next Althing and Chancellorship ellections from a pro-demo point of view. The Martencists have asked the Demos where they had obtained the millions needed to fund this, and received of course no answer, while it is rumored that some of Germany's largest companies are funding the Demos as well as certain Multinational Companies.

OOC: Anybody wants their company, from any country, to influence German politics for their own gains? If anybody is interest, they can RP funding their campaign for exchange of having the Demos open the German Market with little or without regulations once that they win the campaign. If not, I'll RP it by myself.

OOC: That would be good, do you think I should set up a secondary thread about it and then post the publically-viewable effects of this in here?

IC: Markets Opening

After a week-long struggle in the Althing in which the Demos adjusted their original all-out completely-open Market proposal to suit the preferences of the RatComs, the new regulations which for the first time in seventy years open Germany to Foreign Companies in a relatively free fashion has been passed just by a small amount of votes in spite of the ferreous Martencist Opposition.

The effects of this law are much disputed and a source of great controversy in Germany, some believe that this will cause for Investments to finally arrive to the country to allow it to have a growth similar to the leading nations of the world, while others argue that what this will do is destroy the current economy and cause for waves of unemployment and underpaid jobs.

Kanzler Martens has said that even though the laws may be right now reasonable, they are only a starting point for a complete Capitalization of the German Market which will transform the Industrial Nation into a nation of Service and cheap manual work, since the decades of protectionism have made the German Clockwork suceptible to foreign intrution yet bringing the advantage of wartime autarchy. As such, the Martencists say that this is not only a matter of people at large becoming poor but also a weakening of the military of the country. He said that he will continue to follow the current doctrine and merely wait for the people to see the unavoidable effects of this democracy - yet is there anything that he can do?

German stocks have gone up dramatically in the first weeks, which may seem to disprove the Chancellor's theory on the matter. The Democratic Leaders say that his speech, belonging to a time of war gone by, are no longer allowed in German minds weary of dictatorship.

Yet at this point, it is too early to know how this will change Germany.

Several German Democratic corporations - each of which had earned the title 'corporation' under the rigid laws of the GDR - becan investing heavily into the northern neighbour. They would be attempting to bring south German working standards to the north. They would have less profits than purely capitalist companies from throughout the world, but they'd effectively be imposing a standard of how to treat your workers, making their own branches much more attractive unless their offers were met by those other corps.
One of these was Heckler&Koch, which wished to both sell and produce excellent firearms for their neighbours.

OOC: I've just noticed this, I've held Heligoland for some time. Heligoland is part of Schleswig-Holstein, and as a result, I've got full control over the lands. Therefore, I declare your RP of controlling it as null-and-void. The link to the treaty can be found here: Treaty of Heligoland.

"The state of Lübeck has just been made aware of an illegal occupation by their... neighbours to the south. We demand that this unlawful invasion of our sovereign land is repulsed. Therefore, we request that our... rivals in the south please leave our lands peacefully and return all the things they have plundered from us. The state of Lübeck has been ruling over said island for a long time, and you just can't waltz in here and claim that it was 'abandoned and unclaimed' when the land has been part of Lübeck's heartland for such a long time.

In addition to this, the Treaty of Heligoland which was signed some time back with the Third Republic of the Netherlands was in fact, signed on the island which our friends in Deutschland claim to have had no connection to the outside world at all. By their reasoning, does this mean we could claim Rügen and say that 'nobody ever claimed this'? Therefore, we demand their immediate withdrawal and a public apology over this entire mess. We, along with any other nation, do not like our sovereignty to be impeached in such a way."

OOC: If it's null and void OOC, then why are you writing about it IC? If you go with that IC response, then you'd need to admit that the island had been actually completely desolate. However, if you void it OOC, it means that the island was not abandoned and this means that Germany moving into the island never happened, then there's no IC response to the non-event. What would you prefer to do? I don't mind it either way.

IC:

As time went by, the reason why the RatComs had sided with the Demos seemed to suddenly become obvious when Southern Companies moved in. In the following months, big changes would continue to happen. Many German Businesses, including traditional companies, would be forced out of business and so unemployment would rise. The lucky - and most capable - ones would be able to get a job in the Southern German Corporations, while the unlucky ones would be forced to settle for far less rewarding jobs from other foreign companies, and even from some German proper companies which had suddenly modified their policies to commence explotation.

In spite of this, the Democratic Propaganda Wagon continued to proclaim freedom. For some, things were better, for others, things were worse. Some were starting to become rich, while some were starting to become poor. The Martencists would continue to fight against this tide and in the end again found themselves siding with the RatComs in a number of laws, arguing both in favor of protecting the workers. But as the Government had to put forth more social aid to try to help the poor, it had less to spare for propaganda.

Later that year, the Parliamentary Ellections were around the corner. The Chancellor still had more time in office, but these ellections would change it all.

After the ellections have taken place, the Chancellor has attempted to continue with his agenda, however the locked Althing to a large degree prevents it, causing both him and his voters a great deal of frustration.

On the contrary, the Democrats continue to shove their new laws just with the bare minimum of votes in spite of Martensist-RatCom cooperation. This has resulted in Germany becoming much more open to the market - nearly completely open - and for the minimum wages to lower. Inflation is also beginning.

Inflation continues to rise, and verbal battling takes place at the Althing nearly daily, ussually achieving nothing.
Only as of lately they have agreed to send aid to different regions in Germany, which were suddenly flooded when the worst rainy season since before the Silver Revolution has taken place, causing great damage.

As the inflation in the north rises, several companies from the southern State attempt helping the economy by withdrawing some capital from the market.
Meanwhile, an aid-plan is drawn up, should worse come to worst and the northern economy collapse. The north Germans were notified so that they knew the southerners wouldn't just abandon them.

And then, the public image of the Chancellor continues to rise as he grants independence to Germany's Slavs just after having accepted the remaining German-Speaking territories in the west back into Germany. Working towards the nation's intengrity, he seeks to fix those border-related issues in order to get them out of the way for good.

Germany's economy seems to be growing steadily, however, save for the South-based companies, the growth seems to be at the peoples' costs as inflation continues and wages' true value decreases, even though most business seem to get richer.

The economy saw some relief with the departure of the Eastern Slav territories, which were not doing well. Another boost to the economy is the gradual dismantling of most german border fortifications. They are no longer useful because their obsolesence was proved in the German-Austrian war, but also, because Germany held pacts with most of its neighbors. Most of the border walls would remain there, but the majority of the weaponry and technology as well as weapon emplacements would be converted to other uses, to try to aid the economy. The exceptions to this were: Iceland (Which was a fortress in itself) , coastal fortifications (Mostly mines), and, as expected, the German-Lübeck border, the most heavily defended border of all.

Recently people have started demonstrations to try to push the Government to decide favorably on an invasion against Lübeck for their repeated insults against Germany, however, the Government - at first inresponsive towards this - eventually had to step up to tell the People that such an operation was no option, and that the Althing could not consider this in any way: But the hatred for the Lübeck Government and the wish to reunite Germany was still there, and anti-Lübeck pro-war demonstrations continued every week combined with economic unrest demonstrations.

Lastly, Chancellor Martens has said that the irresponsability of many of the German Business and Multinational Companies has proven to be, as he said they would be, disruptive for the country save for certain noteworthy exceptions, and that the Althing is at blame for not stopping this. He says that in a month he will present the Althing with a project to finally rectify Germany's economy once and for all, to sweep all its issues away. The people trust him, and wait patiently.
