"The people who want to leave Alsace-Lorraine because it's now under french control can do so, and will receive 10,000 Mark each and traveling costs will be paid for by us so they can live well for a while until they get a new home and job. I'm quite sure the french won't do a worse job in administering the territory than Rheinmark, especially because they promised to respect the German culture.

And this offer is basically a 'take it or leave it'. You take it, it happens. You don't, we keep that northern bit. The new nation is being established right now.

So, yes, it's unfortunately not really an option. We will transfer control of the regions to you. At last Hessen and Rheinland-Pfalz will no longer be split.

To the first part, there was no reply. He did not expect communist to understand Odal concepts. For the Northern ones, it was big enough of a wonder as it was that they had been as reasonable as they had been, especially when comparing to the states that GDR had come from. All in all, in spite of the lingering disgust on the German population and Government, it was anyway a massive improvement.
