Shepherd's Crook

The three friends were thoroughly enjoying themselves. They all had managed to secure one week of holidays together and were on a dream journey. For Ismael Aidid it was a dream to visit the native land of his father. For Narayanan Pisharody it was journey to the exotic realms of the continent which had now become his home. For James N'komo it was a chance to study wildlife at its most pristine best.

They had set out from Bosaso where they all lived and worked in James's Axe Jeep and had driven all over to the United Mechadamian States. Their destination was the Dzanga- Sanga National Park, home to the African Forest elephants and countless other exotic flora and fauna.

They had hired a safari guide, Banda from Nola and had spent 4 glorious days and nights camping and trekking in the rain forest.

Now it was their last day of camp and were packing up. Ismail, a foreman at the Axe assembly plant in Bosaso was taking some final clicks on his camera when he saw a pack of monkeys observing him. The naturalist in him tossed over remaining crumbs of their bread to the monkeys. He was holding one crumb for an especially cute little monkey when a much larger monkey jumped up and bit him in his right palm.

Jerking back his hand he walked to the dismantled camp where he applied first aid to the injuries. Over laughs the guide Banda told them though they are nasty monkey bites are not very dangerous and that there was nothing to worry.

After paying the guide for his services by adding a generous bonus the three friends set off on the return journey.

Ismail was feeling a faint uneasiness.

By the time the party returned to Bosaso Ismail was running a high fever. After dropping off his friends at their apartments he went home and had two aspirins in the hope that he would be well by the time he returned to work in the morning.

By next day however his fever had not abated. Despite that he left for the plant. While waiting for the customary security checks he was still feeling very ill. The security guards saw his discomfort and forced him to go to the Bosaso Hospital. At the hospital the duty nurse studied the symptoms and diagnosed him as having a variant of flu that was going around in the place. The duty resident also concurred. While he was writing up the report and prescribing medicines Ismail suddenly keeled over to vomit. The nurse caught the vomit in a bed pan nearby and the doctor was shocked to see blood in it.

Dr. Abraham Netanyahu was only in his second year as a doctor but he knew well from his studies that blood in vomit is not a good sign.

He saw the bandage on Ismail's hand and asked him, "What is that? What happened to your hand?"

"Nothing doc. I am only back from a vacation. I had gone on a safari and a monkey bit me," Ismails replied.

"Hmm. Nurse M'Kini please call Dr. Nampudiri. I think he must see this."

Dr. Ramesh Nampudiri was the Chief Physician in the Infectious Diseases Dept at Bosaso Hospital.

Ismail was immediately admitted and taken to the Isolation Wing. Meanwhile a sample of his blood was examined by Dr. Nampudiri.

"Oh, my god!! The Shepherd's Crook! Dr. Netanyahu, our patient has contracted Ebola."

"Ebola? Oh! He said he was bitten by a monkey recently."

"Full quarantine for him. We must act fast if we are to prevent an epidemic."

Dr. Nampudiri immediately calls up the BDA Head quarters.

"Hello, this is Dr. Nampudiri from Bosaso Hospital. Connect me to the Governor. Immediately."

"Hello Doctor. How may I help you?" Asked Raju Narayana Swamy, former BDA administrator and now Governor of Bosaso.

"Mr. Swamy, we have just admitted a patient with Ebola. He caught it during a vacation trip he took recently."

"This Ebola is an infectious disease right?"

"Yes, and it has a mortality rate of 80%. Governor, we have a possible epidemic in our hands. We need to find out who all have been associated with him and take them into quarantine immediately."

"Very well. I shall notify the Police authorities to investigate the matter immediately."

Ismail's friends, families and colleagues were brought to the Bosaso Hospital for checks.

A total of 13 Ebola cases have been identified.

Dr. Raghu Thampan, Director of Center for Infectious Diseases, Yining, flew into Bosaso to investigate the outbreak.

Petechiae has started forming on the skins of the victims.

The Kingdom of Cochin at present does not have any cure for Ebola and is launching a global call for assistance.

We gladly invite your scientists and epidemologists to Bosaso to try assist our scientists to find a cure for this deadly disease. The 12 people already afflicted have less than 20% chance of survival and if any nation or institution have some cure, be it even only experimental we would like to try it out.

We have maintained stringent quarantine conditions and a very large scale testing has been done in Bosaso to affirm that there are no more victims.

"We suggest high doses of lethal radiation, or fire. The survival chance of the patients are so low it may be more humane to end their suffering quickly, as well as making it less likely that others become infected." - Doctor C. M. Banks, M.D. NCCDMP.

Doctor Banks was subsequently relieved of his post. It is believed he has already found work as a janitor, where his insane theories go unnoticed and unpublished.

Euthanasia is banned in the Kingdom and moreover some of the victims are not citizens of the Kingdom, rather they are citizens of Somalia who are employed in Bosaso. Chances of epidemic spreading is nil as we have taken extreme precautions with UV irradiated pressure sealed chambers where treatment is held and all personnel operating are issued Racal suits.

If anybody have a cure for this disease we would welcome it with open hands.

Conditions are deteriorating for 11 of the victims, however vitals are stabilizing in one victim, a young woman of 21 years. Hospital authorities as of yet do not know what is different with the case but it is believed that she may have come from a hardier gene stock and may have immunity against Ebola.

Index patient Ismail Aidid has now developed dementia type symptoms. Petechiae is uniform in all 11 cases.

The United Mechodamian States hasn't had any reported cases of Ebola in its entire existence and offers any doctoral support required to fight this crippling sickness.

We would welcome any assistance. Ebola is a tropical hemorrhagic disease prevalent in the rainforest regions of central africa. We believe this particular strain of virus to be the Ebola Zaire Mayinga 1976.

Any expert you would wish to send could be send to the Bosaso Hospital.

A continual chlorine mist would have caused damage to the support equipment. All medical personnel operate in positive pressure containment suites and the patients are kept in secure isolation wards with air locks and multiple UV and chlorine decontamination systems.

The disease is contained for now, but we are still searching for some reliable cure.

The Taeunas Research Institute for Agressive Diseases has found that two drugs currently on the market have shown in tests to inhibit the spreading of Ebola in infected persons. The drugs are made by Axxora and Biomol and work by inhibiting the diseases ability to utilize the PI3 kinase pathways to trick a cell into accepting it.

Also, there has been indications that a plant called Garcinia kola contains properties which slow down the multiplication of the virus.

Researchers believe that if used in conjunction, these things could halt the spread of the virus in an infected person completely. This would allow the persons immune system time to come up with a fix.

In that case the Kingdom would like to place urgent orders for stocks of these medicines. Price is not an issue. We would like to purchase for now sufficient stock to treat 12 patients. We would also be very grateful if you could send some medical professionals to assist our physicians in administering these medicines.

A Gulfstream 550 belonging to RCAF is standing by to fly to the destination you choose from where the supplies and doctors could be transported to Bosaso.

Your G550 wont be big enough. We would like to send the primary research group to you. Having to operate in full bio containment suits, even in their lab setup, they will also be bringing their own equipment. We have tasked a C-12 Rook aircraft (OOC: Think C-5) to transport the team and their gear to your patients.

A contingent of 45 people, a full copy of our Ebola lab setup and the drugs are being loaded now. With your permission, our people can be on site and working in less than twenty-four hours. The amount of supplies will be enough to treat over a hundred individuals, just in case it should become needed.

"Tango foxtrot one, proceed to runway one seven. You are cleared for take off in your good time, sir. Good luck to your passengers."

"Roger, tower. We copy runway one seven and clear to go. We'll pass on the luck. Tango foxtrot out." The pilot reached over and toggled his com switch to the intercom. "Ok, folks, here we go. Tower says good luck to you." He eased the throttle forward and the mammoth transport aircraft rolled down the runway, gaining speed. As he pulled back on the yoke, the nose came up and pointed off into the night sky. It was going to be a long flight, but the mission was vital.

When he leveled out at 32000 feet, he flipped on the autopilot and pulled out his maps. He shook his head as he retraced their flight path. They would have to overfly RA territory, which wouldn't be a problem. The issue would be flying between the NoN and Raochin nations. Well, actually THROUGH Raochin airspace. That could be tricky. Before they left RA airspace, they would have to flip IFF transponder codes. Even so, he'd have felt a lot better with a fighter escort.

Six hours plus to the LZ...

The MV-22 Osprey, being a vertical flight module, gently touched down on the runway and promptly opened its cargo bay doors. Mendula slowly stepped out as the beaming sun crammed against his forehead. "At least it's a beautiful day," he muttered impatiently as his right foot stepped forward on the ramp. Behind him was a staged crew of four vehicles equipped with intensive research materials and testing machines, along with containment apertures. The forefront vehicle made its descent down the ramp and Mendula simply grabbed a hold of the passenger seat door frame handle and pulled himself in. A helicopter, seemingly for escort purposes was in sight, but there would be no way for his entire team, let alone the vehicles, to all take flight. He casually pointed the driver toward the helicopter, assuming that things would be straightened out there.

"Good morning Dr. Nkailu. I am Dr. Ramesh Nampudiri, Chief Epidemologist, Bosaso Hospital. Thank you for arriving so promptly. My assistant will guide your vehicles to the hospital. Perhaps we could fly there right now to see the patients? I am afraid the Index Patient is showing severe dementia with signs of complete kidney and liver failure."
