After the title card flashes on the screen, Arianna Wright starts her narrative.

"Damon White, serial murderer and unsanctioned Assassin was not born a killer... during the summer of 08' however, this mild mannered individual was the man behind the killings of "The Butcher of Medero"..."

"A quiet and reserved man, Damon was finally apprehended by two Elite Cadre soldiers given information by a criminal informant on the grounds of a plea bargain... it appears Damon was under contract by a local and unsanctionned Assassin Guild.

The mousy man did not struggle, and was whisked away to the Re-education facilities, where it was deemed that he had fallen too far for reintegration into society.

He never drank, never visited a brothel and never even uttered a swear of any kind. He was well known in the underworld for his ability to make people disappear, however. Once someone was targetted by his Guild and Damon was sent to them, they would simply cease to exist. When asked what his choice weapon was, he gave a chilling remark:

"I use axes..."

The thought of such a mouse of a man wielding such an inherently violent and bloody weapon is almost incomprehensible, intriguing officials enough to allow for more questions - Damon did not mind, but being the shy person he was, it took a while for the whole story to be told"

"Damon was orphaned at a young age and was sent to live with a foster parent in the quiet plantation town of Medero. The man promised to show the young boy his business and eventually make him a partner when he came of age. In the mean time, the boy would work as the man's personal house servant."

"The plantation life was hard, the man had several chores that needed to be done impeccably, lest he beat Damon. First, all the floors were to be given a thorough scrub, from attic to cellar. Given only a rudimentary supply of sponge and bucket, Damon had to go about on all floors scrubbing the vast floors until his knees and elbows were raw."

"Secondly, the boy had to ring a bell in the tower that would alert the field labourers to come into the mess for their meals... the bell was a heavy iron one, and forced Damon to grasp the rope chain with both hands, throwing his entire weight down to move the massive bell. Also, whenever the foster parent had any announcements (which was frequent) the boy would need to ring it even more..."

'Finally, the man required that firewood be chopped and stored within' the farm's storehouse each week. Sometime the shipment of logs would come late, and the boy had to result to chopping up nearby brushwood, a job that rendered the boy's pitiful body sore and stiff for days, while he still had to do his other tasks."

"Eventually, Damon became of age, the 19 year old was illiterate and held no other skills saved for his physical labour... he was not taught anything about managing a farm, and could not comprehend that the farm had a constantly poor yield...."

"One day, the man summoned him to the basement cellar. Damon was sure that he had not scrubbed the floor to his guardian's liking and prepared himself for another beating... however, instead of seeing an angered man with rod at the ready, he saw the man packing belongings into crates."

"I'm leaving Ethiopia," the man declared flatly. "Business has gone south and I'm avoiding the debt collectors... Business, you do understand don't you?"

"But sir! I do not! You haven't taught me anything! What shall I do now?"

"I wish I could take you my boy, but I won't be needing any scrubbing, bell ringing or woodcutting where I'm off to...I'm sure you'll find something along the lines of labourer...you are not particularly bright you know, and I've done my best with you."

"As the man turned around to tend to his goods, Damon noticed the wood axe propped against a a shelf. Hefting it easily in one movement Damon listened upstairs. His guardian had sent the labourers away for the day...no doubt intending to leave before they came back and skimp on their pay for the month."

"Imagining the man was a piece of brushwood to be felled, Damon swung at the back of the man's knees instantly lopping his lower legs off."

"As the screams echoed throughout the empty farm, Damon repeatedly lifted the axe above his head and brought it down, not unlike the bell he was tasked to ring in his youth. However, there was no loud ring accompanying each movement, but a wet smack."

"Soon, there was nothing left of the man that could not be scrubbed away... Damon found out that blood scrubbed out far easier than dirt and flour stains.

It was widely known amongst all who cared for the man that he would be leaving, so his disappearance was not questioned. The farm and all its contents were sold to collectors, but Damon took the axe. It seemed the man had given him some worthwhile business skills after all...."

"After telling this story to the Elite Cadre interrogators, he was immediately sent off to the Training Facilities where he would undergo the full indoctrination into the NoN's highly praised and elite "Fate Team Assassin" Programme where he will serve the Brotherhood and our nation for the rest of his life, doing the deeds less...capable people cannot for the well being of our great nation..."

"Before you today is the informant that announced the Butcher of Medero's identity.... due to recent legislation, Plea Bargaining has been abolished... this man is a convicted serial rapist and murderer - far below the calibre of the aforementioned Mr. White...

[...]

"On another note, infrastructure rebuilding is already underway. The NoN has entered rebuilding efforts post war, the Executive Minister promising that nothing will escape the massed efforts...

Construction of the Kolfe Memorial is also underway, the plan being that the entire square will become a life-sized diorama of the Siege of Kolfe... Life sized reliefs will forever glorify the heroic actions of our brothers on that fateful day... Eye witness accounts from the handful of survivors of the battle will be taken into account with forensic and video evidence to accurately outline the battle's final moments."

"That's all for today, and this is Adrianna Wright for Today's Execution. We'll see you next week and remember, "Don't do the crime... if you don't want to be the next guest on our show!" the hostess said with a warm smile.

IC:

Plea Bargains: Tipping The Scales Of Justice?

The Issue

The high-profile case of the fate of Damon 'The Butcher of Medero' White's identifier being punished for past serial ra.pe and murder charge during a plea bargain, has been the subject of outrage and derision by the International community's news providers. In exchange for a guilty verdict, no trial by jury, and positive identification of the Butcher, the informant was nevertheless executed on the popular prime-time television programme, "Today's Execution". The justness of plea bargaining is now being called into question.

The Debate

"Plea bargains degrade the fairness of our justice system," argues Klaus Hamilton, a recently graduated lawyer from the NoN. "Prosecutors are only interested in getting their guilty verdict and plea bargaining is the easiest way to get it! The recent execution of that informant is the perfect precedent to set for future criminals! If it had gone before a jury he'd be behind bars by now and set loose upon the populace once more! He won't though, because the prosecutors and Elite Cadre have rightfully slaughtered that madman! Putting that man on death row is justice for the victims and their families! Plea bargaining must be banned, if only to safeguard our nation and its citizens!! If you need to acquire information, torture it out of the !@#$%^&* with a polygraph and electrodes! "

"What that moral elitist is neglecting to tell you," sneers Naki Mistlefoot, a Promised Land prosecutor, "Is that plea bargaining has made our judicial system MORE effective, not less! There needs to be give and take so we can get to the truth and that's what plea bargains allow us. We were able to catch the worst criminal kingpin the Promised Land has ever seen because of past testimonies from our convicts! Plea bargaining must be allowed to continue in your nation.... we promise that it will help you!"

[...]

Unconventional Weapons Under Fire

The Issue

A collection of citizens, civil rights workers, and concerned mothers have signed a petition to stop the manufacturing and proliferation of the 'Specialist' (AKA incindiary, poisoned and explosive), rifle rounds already in widespread use throughout the NoN's armed forces after a high profile friendly-fire incident with these rounds resulted in the deaths of several members of the National Militia.

The Debate

"These rifle rounds are completely inhumane," says Dr Elizabeth Falopian, leaning on a lab table. "These weapons are unnecessarily cruel - how can anyone condone something that can kill, maim and prolong suffering like this? How long do you think it will be before these rounds get into the wrong hands? Shootings are bad enough but at least most people are just wounded. These 'specialist rounds' and those of its ilk are lethal in the extreme and are completely unacceptable! We need some moral decency here and get rid of these unconventional weapons along with all the other shameful armaments like mustard gas."

"Excuse me, but whenever has anyone ever heard of a weapon that WAS humane?" asks Jack Rifkin, ballistics expert. "These are devices for firing slugs of metal at people. It's not nice, but it IS necessary. People are always so squeamish. They've already accepted the standard ripping through the body of the standard bullet but the moment something a little more effective is made they kick up a fuss. Typical. These nonstandard weapons should only be put into trained military hands anyway. We're not making rocking horses here, we're protecting the Nation of Nod against her enemies! Just this once, let's try to stay ahead of the pack."

[...]

Compulsory Military Service Under Attack

The Issue

Concerned mothers and nervous school-leavers are petitioning the government to abolish compulsory military service.

The Debate

"Our children are forced to be trained to murder!" protests Zeke Chicago, chairman of the Parents Against All Things Violent organisation. "For too long now the government has been snatching away our children and training them to become killing machines. This arcane practice must be banned at once! Sure, some of them could end up breaking into cars or terrorising old people, but hey, kids will be kids, right?"

"What a preposterous idea!" scoffs Drill Sergeant Karl Johnson. "The youth of the NoN have never needed the discipline provided by the armed forces more than it does today, and with all those rogue states and aggressors out there we need all the recruits we can get! If anything, the government should lengthen the required service and drop the minimum age to something more reasonable."

OOC: Other nations are welcome to weigh in on these issues through their own "pundits", purely IC however... (I'll looking at you Subtle!!!! :P )

OOC: nice touch with a lawyer from my nation... :D

IC: The official stance of Promised Land on the matter of plea bargaining is that of Naki Mistlefoot. Plea bargaining gives the criminals a degree of hope that if they co-operate, they may get a lighter sentence. Exectuting them after making a plea bargain gives them no incentive to co-operate whatsoever.

We also obviously support the idea of compulsory military service, practicing that ourselves--though we do not require everyone who joins to join as a combatant. Conscientious objectors are not required to carry a gun, but are offered the option to join the medical corps.

"Today's Execution" was noticably somber instead of the standard flashy sound effects of the title card impacting an imaginary screen, solemn music played in its stead. As the screen changed from black to light, it was soon apparent that there would be no new death today.

In a voice struck with obvious restraint, the TE's hostess, Adrianna Wright, spoke.

"Nations have always built monuments to their heros... Tributes to the defense against," Adrianna turned her chin slightly, "or the conquest of other Nations."

"But the monument currently being assembled in Kolfe is different. It does not favour one nation or another. Instead, it commemorates the enduring survival and will of a people..."

"More importantly, it commemorates the lives of 1073 men who gave a nation hope... and faith. The 8th Militant Cabal of the 1st Militant Division, led by Elite Cadre Commander 117-AE, commonly known as the "Desert Crusader"

"It is with great pride that I bring news on the development of the Kolfe Memorial."

Taking a deep breath before once again looking into the camera, the woman continued.

"Its no surprise that the memorial General Michaelson announced would be special. This would be no ordinary statue or plaque."

"Begun almost as soon as the bodies were interred in the Great Mausoleum within Temple Secundus, the remains of Kolfe Square are to be transformed into a life sized diorama of the Siege of Kolfe. It is a three-dimensional snapshot of the battlefield and the soldiers who fought and died on it that fateful day."

As Adrianna continued, the scene slowly faded from her and instead her dialogue was spoken over interchanging images of the memorial in question, still in its conceptual and tertiary stages.

03NoN.jpg

An image appeared of a group of NoN Heavy Infantry, NMI Ripper Automatic Rifles at the ready. Pictures are worth a thousand words, and it was incredible to see the profound accuracy in the facial expressions of the men as well as the attention to detail inherent in the armour depicted on the diorama participants.

"The scene will be reproduced with painstaking attention to detail and accuracy. Only the handful of men who survived - often under rubble, missing limbs or forcibly confined by brave UMS troops before they could unpin the "Final Contingency" grenades each Heavy Infantryman or Elite Cadre must carry into combat - know it best."

02NoN.jpg

The drab, brown and grey of the memorial reflected the collective agreement of the men on that fateful day - no one would retreat, nor surrender, and no man would be left behind while they were still able.

"To ensure historical accuracy, no man will be depicted within the diorama unless there has been 100% verification that they were infact present within the 8th. All figures will be depicted without the standard Heavy Infantry Facial Protection System (HIFPS) nor the Ceremonial Face Plate of the Elite Cadre. An inaccuracy the Executive Minister himself has authorized."

"After a hero has been fully verified, his Facial Identification files are fully rendered by computer before being attached to a body. Using eye witness accounts and forensic evidence conducted at the scene, a fairly reasonable pose is determined on a personal level."

01NoN.jpg

Not only were the valiant and triumphant men depicted - the fallen were also heart-wrenchingly included, a reminder that war, while being an endless source of glory and honour still takes a heavy toll.

"Workers will have already begun the painful task of scouring the ruins, for any undetonated munitions or other dangerous material. When an area of rubble has been fully checked for safety, actions are taken to ensure the ruins' structural integrity does not endanger the monument, its workers and any vistors in the future."

With an obvious pang of quickly suppressed disgust, Adrianna continued.

"Finally, the UMS will also be included in the memorial. Statements made by the late Lord Prefect Kilik Torqameda insisted that the invasion was due to the sinister machinations of one Pelee Shoustin. War is an endless source of honour and glory indeed... the slain enemy, although misled, also deserve honour and respect." She finalized, her voice bitter.

"It is with anger that I am now forced to switch to another topic at hand."

The view turned back to Adrianna, her eyes glowing fierce as she announced the Krieg's ordeal to the NoN public.

"The inherent hypocrisy of the so called "Democratic" and "Free" governments of the world grows evermore. Recently, the Caliphate of Lybia announced an absurd Ultimatum directed at the Krieg Empire, a newly formed nation located on the Iberian Peninsula."

An enlargened and highlighted depiction of the Libyan statement filled the screen:

Official Ultimatum to the Krieg Empire

1: The fascist currently ruling Krieg are to resign and handover the running of the country to a more moderate Government as chosen buy a local Power ie: Rebel Army or Scotland

2:There will be an official Apology made to Scotland and the Iberian people in General for the trouble you have caused.

Failure to comply within 1 week (48hrs) will result with Military action.

"How ironic is it for these nations, apparently trembling before the feared and misunderstood might of a fascist nation's resolve and collective will, to attempt to coerce the Krieg Empire into following its whims and changing its own Sovereign Governance?" Arianna's voice and demeanor dripped with malice.

"It is infact the same arrogance and hypocrisy we, ourselves, faced when the previously corrupted UMS government issued an Ultimatum of our own!!!" she said raising her voice.

"As we speak, the Executive Minister and General Michaelson have raised our DEFCON to ONE! There is indeed no rest for the wicked, ladies and gentlemen of the NoN!"

"Our nation has seen the terrible effects of war and invasion, and wish to protect this new nation from the grasping hands of the hypocritical self-righteous!"

Raising her voice even further, she finalized her Rallying cry,

"As the Executive Minister said himself! 'IF WE MUST FIGHT TO PROTECT, THEN WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO FIGHT! '"

"That's all for today, and this is Adrianna Wright for Today's Execution. We'll see you next week and remember, "Don't do the crime... if you don't want to be the next guest on our show!" the hostess said with a warm smile.

Today's Execution would be a highly controversial one at best. This would be the first case of an executee being punished with death for a crime commited while he was still a minor.

After the usual title splash card and music flashed on the screen, the image focused on the show's ever present host, Adrianna Wright.

"Maxwell Frere was a quirky and precocious youth. During his time in the Education Facilities, Maxwell showed no obvious proficiencies in any aspects of his education. He was not physically built for military service or other labour, nor was he intelligent or innovative enough for scientific or entrepreneurial work. He was ever the quiet boy who sat in the corner, lacking any social skills what so ever."

"That all changed around the time he turned sixteen... One day, Maxwell started carrying around with him a ventriloquist's dummy."

"No one knows where the boy acquired such an odd looking doll, but this would end up being the turning point in a rather odd and tragic case. Maxwell would soon descend into madness."

"Maxwell would be described as 'genius' with the doll, amusing crowds of local children and eventually larger and larger audiences with his act... Maxwell seemed to have gained a renouned sense of confidence. He soon became very popular and it seemed the boy would become an entertainer."

Adrianna leaned in closer to the screen, and continued with a raised eyebrow.

"After a time, however, those close to Maxwell began to notice certain... peculiar traits the boy had developed. He began carrying the doll wherever he went, even when not performing his routine. Indeed, it appeared Maxwell had become dangerously 'attached' to 'Smacky' the dummy, and his erratic behaviour soon confirmed it."

The screen then panned to a picture of 'Smacky', the dummy in question.

smacky.png

"When the duo performed, audiences soon complained of the acts new found sense of rudeness and tactlessness - the two were kicked out of a scheduled performance at a child's birthday party when Maxwell insulted the celebrant with the doll when she was asked to come up on stage. Max then proceeded to blast shocked parents and other young partygoers with fake vomit, erupting from the doll's mouth-obviously the work of a hidden pump of sorts."

"After a time, Maxwell Frere could not so as much as 'walk' into a club or on stage if he carried that doll, which was still always. Many implored the young man to stop the act and seek work in another profession - others counselling him for psychiatric help too."

"On the eve of Maxwell's 18th birthday, authorities were called to the residence of the said person. It was Maxwell, calling in to police, frantically screaming into the phone to the operator. We acquired this disturbing tape, and will play it for you now. You can judge for yourself how unstable the man was."

The screen turned black, and soon the low hiss of an audio cassette was heard. When the audio played, the screen depicted the words spoken by an obviously distraught Maxwell, which were quite unintelligible.

OPERATOR: Operator, what is your emergency?

MAX: Oh my god!!! He's really done it this time!!! Please! Smacky just killed my entire family?!?!

OPERATOR: Sir, please, calm down... Your entire family?

MAX: YES!!! *Maxwell 'seeing' Stacy, a female acquaintance of his, who was brutally bludgeoned to death, officers would later report that she seemed to be the only victim able to put up a bit of a fight against Maxwell* OH MY GOD, STACY! NOOO!

OPERATOR: Sir, please.... is the suspect still in the house? I am sending some officers to your location now, where is it?

MAX: *Maxwell 'seeing' his parents, whose faces were brutally beaten in* OH MY GOD, DAD!!!!!! MOM!!!!!!! SMACKY WHERE ARE YOU?!?!?! SMAAAACKKKYYYYY!! I'LL KILL YOU FOR THIS! *Loud gasps and cries* Ok, I live on *****************, *******.

OPERATOR: Sir, if the suspect is still in the vicinity, please, do not try to combat him. The authorities are on their way.

MAX: No, no, no, no, no that won't work... *sobbing* you can't kill Smacky, I've already tried.... I just wanted to be alone from him for a little while.... I didn't actually think he would kill everybody like he said he would....

OPERATOR: Sir, did you have any relationship with the suspect? Please, the authorities are almost there.

MAX: He was my partner...

OPERATOR: Your partner? Business?

MAX: Yeah... he was my Ventriloquist Dummy.

*END*

The screen once again laid itself upon Adrianna, her finger pressed firmly against a a button at her desk. With a flick of her hair, she continued her speech.

"When authorities arrived on the scene, absolute carnage awaited them. The bodies of most of the Executee's immediate family were strewn about, almost all had bludgeoning or similar injuries. Blood adorned almost every square inch of the house, and it seemed that as Maxwell murdered his father and mother, who were later determined by authorities to be the first victims, found in Maxwell's bedroom. Rather coincidentally, this was the same room where Maxwell 'housed' the Smacky dummy.... many have speculated that this whole tragic multiple murder was caused when the parents - finally decided to help their son salvage his life and career - decided to forcibly remove Smacky from his life for good, only to be bizarrely attacked in a crazed fit of rage..."

"He then moved to the only entrance of the living quarters, where he murdered his sister, Marsha. Then, he proceeded to systematically hunt down and kill everyone else, with Stacy, the only non-family member involved, being chased and injured multiple times in what could only be speculated as a terrifying and agonizingly long pursuit throughout the house."

"Despite frantic 'pleas' that he was innocent, Maxwell stunned Authorities with the repeated statement that 'Smacky' was the real perpetrator and he had been framed by the puppet!"

"No official motive for the slayings has ever been determined - surveillance tapes that were provided to police showed no instances of any one entering or exiting the compound that was not either Mr. Frere or the victims."

"Obviously deranged, perhaps by guilt over the horrendous crime he commited, Mr. Frere will be put to justice before you, our cherished viewers. Mental illness is not an excuse, nor is it a pardonable reason for murder and other violent crimes within the NoN and he will be a danger to society no more."

Adrianna gave off another raised eyebrow.

"As for Mr. Frere's story, 'Smacky' was never recovered, and is believed by NoN forensics agents to be the actual murder weapon. All blunt force trauma injuries follow the pattern of small fists or feet. At first, it seemed that only a supremely strong child could inflict such marks, but due to testimony gleaned from Maxwell during Enhanced interrogation techniques, the most plausible answer is that Mr. Frere dismantled the poor doll and in a fit of insanity attacked his family with the very wooden fists and feet that made up his 'companion'..."

The screen finally turned to its final scene, a small, sterilized room containing what appeared to be a steel dentist's chair. From the vantage point, the viewer could see that there was a niche to the left where witnesses and authorities would reside. To the right, a steel door. The room was dark, save for a naked bulb hanging above the chair.

With a swift movement, a force swang the heavy door with a loud 'clang'. Two heavyset and black armoured Elite Cadre guards held a frantically writhing and screaming man.

"IT WASN'T ME!!!! I SWEAR IT WASN'T ME!!!! SMACKY DID IT! HE SAID HE'D KILL MY FAMILY IF I REFUSED-" the man was jostled by one of his guards, annoyed at the outbursts.

"-IF I REFUSED TO BE HIS SLAVE ANY MORE!!!!! PLEASE! THAT DUMMY IS EV-" with a swift punch to the gut, the now thoroughly impatient guard silenced Maxwell Frere, his head dropping to his chest.

As the guards strapped the gasping man to the chair, several medical technicians in white scrubs moved from the shadows.

"You will be punished for your crimes, and will be given no sedative for your continued lying to authorities... Murder is murder, especially when it is as brutal as those your family suffered! Your illness is no excuse!" a low voice was heard from one of the guards. The medtech's were a flurry of movement setting up IV lines and other equipment.

The door opened noticeably more silent, this time the group of observers and witnesses entered and stood to the left of Maxwell.

"Pleeeasee..." Maxwell groaned, "I can stop him!! He said he had a list of people he wanted to get.... he won't stop till they all end up lik-"

"ENOUGH! YOUR FOOLISHNESS ENDS HERE!" the guard bellowed, and gave another swift blow to the man's chest.

As the IV's entered the man's body, a tube of sorts was displayed on the screen over the images from the room. It was an indicator that would show the status of the injection process to the viewers of TE - what was being injected, how much had already entered the executee's body, Estimated time of death...

The indicator lowered, until the miniature IV showed that it held no more toxin. As the man on the chair began to convulse, a countdown timer started.

Maxwell Frere, found guilty of seven counts of Aggravated Murder, lay dead on the chair.

"Hmph! They say the toxin is almost unbearable if the victim is conscious and aware... too bad I'm stuck here. Can't hardly see a damned thing!" Adrianna, the former Executionist said to herself.

Shaking her head quickly, she continued, "Sorry, I was musing out loud again. Let this serve as a beacon of justice and warning to others... Already there have been reports of several Copy-Cat style murders..."

As if speaking to the perpetrators of those crimes, she continued.

"...you WILL be caught, and you WILL be given no mercy, as your inspiration was." She said pointing to the scene behind her on the monitor - the guards were already disposing of Maxwell, his body would be sent to an unmarked smelter delegated with such tasks.

"That's all for today, and this is Adrianna Wright for Today's Execution. We'll see you next week and remember, "Don't do the crime... if you don't want to be the next guest on our show!" the hostess said with a warm smile.

"While I can't say I entirely disagree with your rational I am wondering as to why such information should be broadcasted to the world. There is some nobility in executing individuals for the sake of society; but this really just turns execution into a spectator sport; and trivializes society's respect for life and the criminal justice system. While I can see a deterrence rational; I do question to what degree this might also brutalize your society and only sanction and increase the trend of murder. Its a common fact that violent media will in the wrong hands trivialize life, and desensitize individuals to barbarism encouraging socially deviant behavior; that media is typically synthetic. I can only wonder what media on real violence by the state will do to your society." - Allison Loraine

*FORMAL RESPONSE FROM NOD (Network of Disclosure), PARENT ENTITY OF TODAY'S EXECUTION and OTHER NoN NEWS MEDIA* (OPEN)

"While the NOD respects any and all foreign insights and comments about our programming, especially from Government level officials such as yourself, we at the NOD and subsequently Today's Execution (all rights reserved, copyright) disagree with some of your thought processes and would care to enlighten you on our position.

On the initial statement, while episodic content from Today's Execution and other NOD media is available world wide to any of the international Media Networks, the primary goal our programming and broadcasting has always been, and will continue to be providing entertainment and informative content to the citizens of the Nation of Nod. As such, our content has always come with a disclaimer that some (jokingly, we would deign to say most) of our content is unsuitable for some audiences. Citizens of the NoN are not as squeamish as other nationals might be. Infact, all NoN societal members contain and proudly display a profound sense of martial ethics with regards to everyday issues. As such, Today's Execution shows that it is extremely apparent that almost all NoN citizens believe in what some may deem a harsh, or others, an overtly draconian sense of Justice, which is reflected in the TE's long standing run and steady level of dominance over NoN primetime television views.

In regards to turning the issue of execution into entertainment, while we strongly disagree with such sentiment, we acknowledge that some our our audiences may feel that the sight of an execution has certain 'stimulating' aspects. We have no control over our fellow citizens' preferences, despite what certain detractors of our government type would have you believe.

With respect to your comment on trivializing life, we also must strongly disagree and voice our rebuttal. To see the ultimate punishment bestowed upon those who commit great crimes against the State and its citizenry is the best way to deter crime. This program, coupled with various other laws, procedures and our ever present police force has resulted in an extremely low crime rate within the NoN. One can even speculate that the reason TE's popularity is so high is due to the fact that crimes punishable by death happen so rarely, that when they do most have a strong passion on restoring the status quo and ensuring that the offender does not have another chance to commit such acts, permanently. To live in a society that punishes crimes against fellow man so heavily actually reinforces our citizens' reverence for human life and the criminal justice system. Deviancy and unsanctioned murder is constantly hunted down and eliminated. Unsanctionned assassins in particular are often the targets of properly documented, trained and disciplined NoN 'Fate Assassins'. This career actually holds a high regard and is treated with great honour within the NoN. Most high-ranking officials have come from this discipline as it requires all the aspects a politician needs to be effective - strength, virtue, skill, discreetness and intelligence.

We agree others may deem our society and outlook on life as 'brutal', 'draconian' even 'barbaric'. We allow others to say what ever they wish - we all know such views are simply the results of differing values, preferences and upbringings. Ultimately, ignorance is the cause of such insults and is not dwelled upon. To be ignorant is one thing, to actually be insulted by an ignorant person is another, and is much worse. As such, we could not possibly answer your inquiry, "I can only wonder what media on real violence by the state will do to your society" as you believe that violence is harmful, while we believe that violence is inherent in everyday life. We all believe our society to be wholely stable, safe and the ideal way to live. We would like to give our own, good natured rhetorical question, when a citizen in a democratic society chooses to vote, are they not exercising political authority? Such an act is an act of force. Force is violence, the supreme authority from which all other authorities are derived. While we agree that senseless violence is a detriment to society, wholesome and sanctionned violence is necessary to sustain the stability our citizens enjoy.

We thank you for your comments. If you have any other questions, concerns or comments, feel free to drop us another line to our public relations offices. Thank you.

IC:

After the last remaining masons, sculptures and engineers left the site, Kolfe was once again the desolated waste land the East African War left it to be.

Silence had engulfed the area - nothing was stirring, even the seagulls avoided this place as if they also knew about the sacred and hollowed ground that the ruins had become.

Suddenly, the sound of dozens of boots crunching against gravel interrupted the still air. The gravel, previously asphalt that made up the many roads and the great square of Kolfe itself, was the only thing unmoved by the heroic sacrifices that took place at this site and voiced its indignation at being trod upon quite loudly.

It was raining lightly, the sky a dim grey. As the group approached what appeared to be a fully armed and manned military checkpoint, its inhabitants aiming several weapons in their direction, several of the photographers and camera crewmembers began frantically rummaging about in their carry-on bags and wallets for their Press IDs. Nevertheless, the 'group' continued walking towards the checkpoint, giving them no time to stop. The soldiers leading the escort and the members of the media that were already aware of the meticulous attention to detail the Kolfe Monument's creators had given their masterpiece remained unmoved as they neared.

It was only as the 'check point' was near spitting range did the others realize that the men pointing their weapons would never fire. Their gazes would never leave the road entering Kolfe and they would forever guard against an enemy that was already long and gone. They were a tragic and eternal monument to faithful duty and vigilance. It was now that everyone knew that they had entered the now immortalized Siege of Kolfe Memorial.

"We have arrived at our destination, ladies and gentlemen..." the soft spoken Afrikaan man had a heavy accent, which some said made him sound endearing. He would be serving as the 'Tour Guide' of the first opening of Kolfe to non-military personnel since before the war started. This small group, hand picked from several media outlets within the NoN would be led through the site, the unnamed man would be providing explanations on what they were seeing, as information regarding specifics was noticably absent from the conflict.

"That was the Eastern Most part of the Monument that we just saw... amazing isn't it? I know at least some of you were fooled by the details and fine workmanship of the diorama's figures...." he said, as some of the group members toed the ground or grumbled to themselves.

"at the time during the battle this diorama represents, only 86 men remained as the final tertiary defensive position near the end of the Siege. The UMS had bombed Kolfe considerably," the man raised his arms and spun slowly around, the gazes of the group following where he pointed. The bombed out rubble, stretched out as far as the eye could see, was the only evidence needed to back the man's claims. Every ruin had been thoroughly inspected by structural engineering crews to determine what was fit to stand and what had to be cleared. While the surroundings still maintained the heavy battle damage, most had to be subtly reinforced to ensure the mass monument would be preserved for future NoN citizens to see.

"and had killed most of the 200 odd men originaly assigned that role. While many men would have fled by this point, these men did not, like many others did that day... The survivors' continued their mission- keep 'the backdoor' secured, so to speak. Any flanking maneuvers by the UMS would have had to be held off if the major NoN combatants within the square itself were to have any hope of protecting us..."

"What happened to those men AFTER that?" a woman spoke up.

Shaking his head sadly, "Almost no one survived. The UMS tried again and again to flank them and inflicted horrible casualties... In the end they almost succeeded before the battle was halted."

Almost by reflex, he turned to two figures in a corner. One lay on the ground, leaning against the corner, the other was standing above him, a rifle pointed at the fallen man's chest. The NoN man on the ground was grimacing- the details of the statue were gruesomely realistic and faithful to the events. He was missing both legs, his right hand defiantly holding a pointed pistol at a vivid looking UMS soldier. The left hand placed ominously near a grenade pinned to his chest...

The two were embroiled in a vicious psychological battle. Only god would know what was running through their minds at the time. The UMS soldier was in the process of apprehending the NoN Heavy Infantryman as a prisoner of war when he was greeted by the sight of a pointed sidearm and imminent threat to blow both of them up. Even in the face of horrifying pain and suffering, the NoN trooper had one last act of defiance.

"Many more committed suicide, rather than show weakness in face of defeat." Pointing out the pair to the rest, he finally gave the results of the Mexican Stand-off. "In the end, those two, over there... they both died. He pulled the pin and ended them both himself."

Without another word, the guide turned about westwards again, and proceeded down a pock-marked concrete staircase. Just wide enough to allow two grown men to stand abreast, it was surrounded on either side by walls that adjoined two buildings. The others followed him unquestioningly, some snapping pictures of the two figures even as they moved.

"Careful as you near the bottom of the staircase!" the guide looked up at his followers as he rounded a landing and made his way down the second and final flight. The walls obstructed the view of the destination the shallow stairs had and as the first group members rounded the bend, they nearly bumped into a figure that was peering around the wall, at the street they would be entering. The young man was a tall Ethiopian, and he was gazing in shock at a sight the others didn't see yet.

Carefully maneuvering around the figure, the news media entered the street. The group collectively dropped their jaws at the sight that met them...

TodaysExecution.jpg

It is with deep regret that as of September 27th, at 3:35 AM, I am force to announce the Nation of Nod recognizes a State of War with the Rebel Army. The Rebel Army has initiated an uncalled for and purely aggressive invasion upon the Sovereign Kingdom of Roachin. As both the Nation of Nod and Roachin are signatories of a Mutual Defence Pact with the Aether Empire, we are forced to support our Allies.

We call upon Lavo Shalom yet again, and once more urge the Rebel Army, longstanding beacon of prosperity and stability in Northern Africa to cease their support of the destabilizing 'Novak' entity. The people of Roachin have voiced their solidarity with their current Government, and we do not wish to see the honourable reputation of the Rebel Army become marred further with the blood of innocents, and the blood of Defending forces.

The Nation of Nod has deployed its Coalition Military Break-Through Forces (NoN-CMBT Forces) to support our allies. If we cannot stop your rampage on the Arabian Peninsula with diplomacy, we will try with all our might and resolve to resist you militarily.

We call upon all nations to denounce the blatantly aggressive and unjust actions of the obviously misled Governing body of the Rebel Army.

May this day be marked in history as the day Ants stood against a Giant. Where 3 sovereign entities stood firm in solidarity and cried out in a loud voice:

"You may be powerful, you may wish to impose your will upon us... We may die before the day is out....

BUT WE WILL NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT! WE WILL STAND TOGETHER AND FIGHT!"

The preceeding words were scrolled silently soon after 'Today's Execution''s title card flashed on screen. As the last lines faded into obscurity, the TE's Hostess, Arianna Wright, started.

"Brothers, sisters, of the Nation of Nod. Once again, we have become the victims of Foreign Aggression in Africa..."

An image popped up on screen of the North-African/Arabian Peninsula. Suddenly, a large red arrow projected itself out of the Rebel Army and appeared to stab into four places in western Roachin. Each 'stab' resulted in what appeared to be a puddle of blood blooming - no doubt a caricature of the RA's invasion forces. As the blood puddles formed, however, several blue arrows erupted from the center of Roachin, and began a reverse tug of war with the Red Rebel Army arrow.

"On September 12th, 11:32 pm the Rebel army moved several hundred thousand men into Sovereign Kingdom of Roachin territory. The attack was unwarranted - our Roachinian brothers did not threaten the Rebel Army in any way - and was also a blatant show of a misguided sense of superiority to those who refuse to bow down to such tyrants."

With a breath, Wright continued.

"The Roachinians are our allies. We believe in loyalty to our brothers-in-arms. We have allied ourselves to the Roachinian people; betraying them now would be disgraceful! The Executive Minister knows this and has activated the Mutual Defence Pact between the NoN, The Aether Empire and The Kingdom of Roachin."

"Let us pray for our brothers-in-arms... we will fight, we will win, we will prevail!"

[...]

"In other news it is with deep regrets that our Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nyani Oshibutu, the woman who almost single-handledy secured a peace during the East African War for the NoN has been gravely injured in a tunnel collapse outside her home in the Western Undercity. She has been listed in stable condition as of two nights previous...."

Looking down on the paper below her on the table, Arianna was seen to briefly raise both eyebrows up in shock before continuing.

"Although suffering a horrifying injury, her left arm had been severed up to her elbow, Madam Oshibutu persevered (OOC: Oh god what a pun) and was able to draft several Foreign documents from a make shift Office of Foreign Ministry set up in her hospital quarters. Let this all serve as a reminder to all about the sacrifices that will be needed in the coming months...."

"Nyani will not need to suffer the loss of her arm much longer - diplomat-level talks have already begun with the Nation of Viniland on procuring a prosthetic. I would now like to take the time to thank the people of Viniland for their help in such circumstances on behalf of the People of the Nation of Nod.

Nyani has always served her nation will impeccable care and devotion... we must repay her for her important work."

[...]

"On a more 'uplifting' note, massed construction efforts are underway in the Eastern most parts of the Nation of Nod. Infrastructure previously deteriorating under the former ISoA regime, or lack of one thereof, will become the targets of a vigorous repair, overhaul and extension of the Undercity infrastructure."

"Of significant note, the newly acquired Port City, Ras Siyan has recieved extensive construction efforts. No doubt all of these efforts will guarantee our prosperity in the future, and is a sign that the Nation of Nod is here to stay, now and forever."

Extreme High Speed, Close Air Support Craft

With the recent acquisition of 10 MMWA-10's from Marscurian Pakistan's Marscurian Military Works, the NoN's MILitary Aviation Complex, MILAC has begun and extensive dismantling of several of the systems, with even more thorough weapons and aviation tests.

The goal? The development of the NoN's own Close Air Support/Ground Attack aircraft program, the XA-1. "X" denoting this program Experimental stage (subsequent production models will lack the X designation) and "A" indicating this craft's "Assault" or Ground-Attack/Close-Air Support Role.

Project Goals :

The Aether Empire* Nation of Nod's own, MILitary Aviation Complex (MILAC) requires the following project goals for the construction of this craft.

- High Durability against munitions up to 50 mm around unit critical components.
[Note]While desirable, if the NoN deems such armour to be too costly or detrimental to specific design parameters then such provisions will be deemed unnecessary.

-Strong weathering durability against sand, dust and heat found in operating Theatres of the NoN.
[Note]MILAC will be working to develop several modifications in order for the craft to operate in colder climates past Temperate.

-The NoN seeks to build a craft that is extensively armed with a large armament capacity that will utilize current and subsequently developed arms, such as the "Spiker" 90mm GP Rocket and the "Stabber" 120 mm triple tandem warhead Anti-Tank/Helicopter Guided Missile (AT/H-GM), 500kg Free-fall and Guided Bombs, Cluster Munitions and the recently gleaned GAU 8/A 30 x 173mm Gatling Cannon. Subsequent models and variants will eventually be able to field a small number of dedicated Air-to-air missiles for self defence.

-The NoN seeks a heavily armed, super-sonic craft capable of an extremely fast insertion, drastic decline in velocity to perform its support duties via a relatively high-speed strafe run coupled with a dedicated weapons officer responsible for unleashing its wide array of ordinance and finally regain super-sonic speeds to escape the theatre. Shock and awe derived from the quick arrival, massive ordinance dispersal and even faster departure is paramount. Such a high speed attack should prove more than an adequate defence against enemy fighter and dedicated surface-to-air defences.

-Have all components designed with replacability and modularity in mind along with future components worked out for future modification.

-Flyaway cost (Before R&D costs are factored) should minimized as much as possible and is projected to be a 15-18 million USD (Undercity-Secured Dollar) cost.

Weapons Goals:

-Implement and use as many air-to-ground weapons as possible.

-Required front 2-3k semi-depleted uranium armor-piercing bullet weapons system

-Design capable of housing all ordinance save the front end cannon within the superstructure of the craft

-Non-laser guided munitions will be relegated to "dumb", "GPS", "Active Radar Homing", "Semi-Active Radar Homing", and other subsequent guidance systems.

-Fire and forget internal weapons control systems

[Note]While the MMWA-10's were equipped with dual turbofan engines, MILAC and the NoN require twin turbojet/ramjet "variable cycle"powerplant systems. This is required because turbojets are inefficient at high speeds but ramjets cannot operate at low speeds. To resolve this, the airflow path through the engine must varied, depending on whether ramjet or turbojet operation is more efficient, thus the term "variable cycle".

OOC: Basically I'm going to blend the firepower of the contemporary A-10 with the frame of a supersonic, HIGHLY modified, and extremely cool Lockheed YF-12. Both craft and accompanying technology were developed and fielded well within the Cold War era...

I also plan on designating the completed plane the A-1 "Krieg" Fast Close-Air support craft. It will use the nose mounted 30 x 173mm Gattling Cannon redubbed the "Cole-Cannon". :lol1:

* The NoN has gone to great lengths to distance itself from the Aether indeed :P

If you had a surveillance satellite hovering over 9.002977,38.726778 at noon, local time the above image would be seen.

Like two black lizards basking in the harsh Ethiopian Sun, the first domestically produced NoN military aircrafts since the end of the Great Divide were taken out of their hangars in preparation for their maiden flights.

The first XA-1 'Krieg' Fast Close Air Support craft was to undergo rigorous flight testing at the supersonic speeds the program required. The last was to perform live-fire testing of some of the program's projected weapon systems in conjunction with its new prototypical nose-mounted fire control radar.

YF-12_takeoff.jpg

At approximately 13:00 hours, the two planes took off with no reported problems. Formation was tight throughout the take off sequence, however at approximately 13:15 the two planes separated sharply, the first veering due west, towards an undisclosed region North of Kolfe district where its live fire exercises would commence. The second craft continued on its north western approach without incident.

The live-fire model, dubbed XA-1mod-0 was fully outfitted with its intended payload of Air-to-Surface Munitions, however it lacked the Variable Cycle Engine paramount to its program's 'Fast' designation. Instead, it sported twin, subsonic turbojet engines that were sufficient for the mod-0 to perform its strafing tests in the desert. Fire-control was delegated to its prototype XAN/ASG-18 variable setting Fire-Control system.

Equipped with its signature 30 x 173 mm GAU/8 'Cole' Cannon, one Strategic Long-Range Munition model 7 (SL-R mod-07) strategic cruise missile, thirty "Spiker" 90mm GP Rockets, twelve "Stabber" 120 mm triple tandem warhead Anti-Tank/Helicopter Guided Missiles (AT/H-GM), two 500kg dumb bombs and two cluster munitions packets it became clear that the XA-1 would undergo a baptism of fire. Testing of said payloads played out as followed.

At approximately 13:50 after a significant loitering period to ensure full operational flight status, the craft turned East and fired its single SL-RM. NoN radars tracked the cruise missile's approximate 3000 km flight over NoN air-space and international waters in the Indian Ocean until it reached its final destination - a derelict Roachinian Tanker that was formerly used by The Kingdom of Roachin in a brave, yet futile attempt to block off the Red Sea. The tanker had been adrift for weeks, with belligerent nations allowing the hulk to drift out of the combat Theatre where it posed a risk to international shipping lanes. After the target was verified to be destroyed with no collateral damage by an observing NoN craft, the test was considered a success.

Soon after the launch, the craft headed due north, where it reached the Tilili Proving grounds, formerly a 'Tank' graveyard, where several targets were set up by NDII and MILAC to not only test the XA-1's combat performance, but also the defensive capabilities of current NDII models and a number of gleaned UMS tanks from the brief Arabian War.

The first set of targets was a 'column' of now obsolete T-80 Heavy Tanks. mod-0 approached at attack speeds (slightly subsonic) where its main cannon was fired for a duration of 10 seconds, with fire-control given by the XAN/ASG18's 'Look-down/shoot-down' mode. All six tanks were obliterated.

Continuing on for a kilometer, the craft made a complete 180 and again converged on a target - this time a cluster of static defence guns, entrenched NDII Defender Heavy Tanks and a NDII Devastator Super-Heavy Tank. A brief two second burst of the 30 mm Cole-Cannon and the drop of its twin Cluster Munitions units covered the target area in a rain of submunitions consisting of explosively-formed penetrators and shaped charges. The submunitions themselves were designed to explode on contact-fuse with a projected 99.3% successful detonation rate.

Finally, a row of UMS Delta Paros and a large double wide column of NDII Chaperone Light Tanks were the final goal before heading back to base. As the craft closed in, the 'bomb' bay doors opened once more, this time the Internal Asylum Ordinance Projectors being lowered into place. This attack would be the most risky out of the three. Made up of three different weapon's launches within a single pass, the craft banked to the right where it fired all twelve AT/H-GM's at the Delta Paroses, only to bank sharply to the left, where all thirty 70mm General Purpose Rockets were launched in a flurry of Unguided Fire at the Chaperones. Fire control was attributed to the XAN/AS18's GAs Pulse Doppler Radar system and Infrared Search and Track capabilities, respectively.

As the X-A1 passed overhead, it dropped the last of its armament, the two 500kg's targeted initially by laser for good measure and then climbed, where it would soon reach its Service-Ceiling of 90,000 ft.

Meanwhile, the testing of the newly developed MVFJ-58 Variable Cycle engine took place approximately 1 km from the UMS/NoN Protectorate with the second XA-1 in the air, designated mod-1. The mod-1's extremely fruitful, yet short super sonic flight was as follows.

After completing its own loitering period near the border, mod-1 turned East and with frontal cones (spikes) in the open position, accelerated to approximately Mach 0.5 for one minute, thirty two seconds.

The XA-1 broke the sound barrier several minutes later, with green across the board, test pilot Lt. Asebe Wakjiila accelerated to approximately Mach 1.5, with both engines reporting their forward by-pass doors opening nominally.

This allowed the frontal cones to retract, and the ejector flaps to open. Mach 3 was reached soon after.

Suddenly, a notice came up on the Flight engineer's status console. The mod-1's current speed was resulting in a 36% chance of airframe destabilization. After confirming with ground control, it was deemed that Lt. Wakjiila's flight and subsequent data collected was sufficient enough to 'answer questions such as how engine inlet performance affected airframe and propulsion interaction, boundary layer noise, heat transfer under high Mach conditions, and altitude hold at supersonic speeds.'

The flight was then recalled, with mod-1 attaining a holding pattern approximately 40,000 ft below mod-0's. With both tests complete, the twin's returned home via subsonic flight. Metallurgical studies of the mod-1's fateful flight resulted in several interesting design implementations of subsequent XA-1 models.

During flight, mod-1 was enduring 'thermal expansion' or rather, actual super structure of the plane was splitting and curling due to the heat of + Mach 1.5 flight. Major portions of the upper and lower inboard wing skin of the XA-1 would later be corrugated, not smooth. By making the surface corrugated, the skin was allowed to expand vertically and horizontally without overstressing, which which also increased longitudinal strength.

It was determined later by subsequent flight tests of the modified mod-1 that the aircraft's skin was actually growing stronger over time, because of intense heating due to compression of the air, caused by the rapid flight of the vehicle (heat treatment).

By late January, the XA-1 would lose its prototypical X designation, to become the Nation of Nod's newest addition to its air arsenal, the MILAC A-1 'Krieg' Fast Close Air Support craft, named after the NoN's previously controversial, yet somewhat admired ally.

Sporting its advanced Fire-Control, Propulsion and similarly named 30 x 173mm 'Cole' Anti-Armour Cannon, the A-1 would seek to rain fire upon the NoN's enemies.

*CLASSIFIED*

While the propulsion systems and the targetting systems coupled with live fire testing have been successful separately, they have yet to be tested together.

MILAC is currently undergoing further testing of the XA-1 Krieg Fast Close Air Support craft with regards to its Mach 1+ strafing ability.

More details as they follow.

*END CLASSIFIED*

OOC: I suppose neighbouring nations could comment on the frequent Mach 2+ flights over NoN airspace, however.

The XA-1 mod 02, the modified mod 00 responsible for uncovering the program's design flaws

A stunning revelation after the aforementioned testing of the XA-1's Mach 1+ strafing ability resulted in the exposure of a huge oversight in the XA-1's design, ultimately causing several staff members responsible for the error to be 'liquidated from payroll'.

At a speed of Mach 1, the Marschurian GAU-8 would put down a round every 50 meters! At Mach 1.5, every 75 meters! Furthermore, the standard strafe run coupled with the XA-1's extreme high speed would result in the pilot pulling out of his descent early, lest he strike the surface due to the high angle of attack of the GAU. Furthermore, the effective range of the GAU was only 1200 meters, dangerously close to the target and the ground and ineffective at striking targets even if the pilot survived the descent.

To address the main issue, it was determined that the GAU-8 30mm autocannon was simply and utterly unsuitable for a Mach 1+ strafing attack. It did not have a sufficient rate of fire or capability to strike targets consistently, nor did it have a safe effective range.

MILAC engineers determined that a Gatling type rotary cannon would not be acceptable. They required a weapon capable of higher speeds with double the effective range.

The NMI Lancer was a unique 30mm autocannon. Previously used as a coaxial and tandem-paired-coaxial weapon on the NDII Defender Heavy Tank and NDII Devastator Super-Heavy Tank respectively, the Lancer was a linear action, non-revolving anti-armour autocannon with a remarkably light weight and devastating accuracy.

On its standard applications, the autocannon would be fired at a rate of 200 rounds per minute, in order to save ammunition. In this aerial role, where ammunition was less of a problem, the Lancer was found to have a maximum fire rate of 1800 rounds a minute. While impressive, this led to an overtly short barrel life when used consistently at this rate. It was found that the gun's accuracy was responsible for this flaw. The tighter barrel dimensions lead to significantly improved accuracy but greater wear and tear.

NoN engineers opted to lower the rate to 1500 rounds/minute, which was sufficient for the weapon's smaller size and vastly lighter weight, while simultaneously reinforcing the barrel with composite materials that boasted a significantly higher heat tolerance.

The gun had an effective range of 1800m unmodified. MILAC engineers responded by lengthening the barrel by .5 meters, effectively increasing this value well within the desired 2400m mark.

In order to increase the firing rate required by the XA-1's extremely short firing window (it was projected that the XA-1 would need to fly in a low angle of attack, flying straight towards its target at Mach 1.5+ with only 5 seconds to aim, fire and pull out in its fastest engagements. This gave pilots approximately 1-2 seconds of fire).

It was decided that the 50 kg weight of the Lancer, opposed to the 280 kg's of the GAU-8 would be exploited. Multiple Lancer's would be used in tandem.

The Lancer would be used with the Gast Gun principle in mind. The paired weapon array would be made of two Lancer barrels combined into a single mechanism in such a way that the recoil from firing one barrel loads and charges the second. This would result in providing a much faster rate of fire for lower mechanical wear than a single-barrelled variant. This further increased the XA-1 main gun to a rate of fire of 3000 RPM.

This tandem system weighed approximately 120kg, with more room to spare, MILAC opted to attach a second system alongside the first. This quad array was outfitted to fire at 1/4 action cycle, ramping the rate of further to the desired 6000 RPM.

XA-1QA.jpg

The relatively simplistic solution to MILAC's growing dilemma is attributable to, and only to, one Lucretius Von Neridius.

This ingenious solution to the XA-1's near fatal oversight was attributed solely to Lucretius Von Neridius, a former Roman national. The highly stylized name, eccentricity and controversial treatment of his equals coupled with utter technical and mechanical brilliance resulted in LVN gaining a notoriety within MILAC's research and design offices. His designs seemed almost infallible- even if there was any flaw to be found, his ego and 'unique' character more than made up for it every time. Detractors of his machinations were shot down mercilessly left and right in droves.

The XA-1 program was reborn. With this new weapons array, the Krieg did not require slower speeds to fire effectively. With the previous weapon, the Krieg would zoom into a theatre at Mach3+, undergo a massive deceleration, descend perilously close to the ground to fire, then quickly evacuate and climb. The craft was extremely vulnerable in this deceleration and LVN single-handedly solved this problem.

Now, the Krieg truely lived up to its name. It was capable of flying at a relatively safe and low angle of attack, fly at speeds up to Mach 1.5 directly at the target, have approximately 2 seconds of firing time which amounted to 200 rounds of 30 x 173mm at a safe distance of 2.4 km and be able to climb and accelerate back to Mach 3 and escape the theatre (OOC: If my math is wrong, feel free to correct me!).

Further 'demands' of Lucretius included the addition of a belly and nose mounted laser guidance system for the quad array. This further added to the XA-1's accurate and quite devastating fire.

Future projects that have left LVN's office include a guided kinetic strike- this fiendishly simple plan is one MILAC has expressed great interest in. Basically and in the words of its creator, " [the] plane flies at Mach 3 over a target, dropping a fin stabilized 20kg DU[Depleted Uranium] rod guided by a laser mounted on a swivel mount on the plane's belly. A 20 kg rod traveling at Mach 3? Deadly and extremely cheap. Definitely the most bang for your buck."

XA-1DU.jpg

LVN's proposed Kinetic Weapon, held in its belly mount

To give the XA-1 much needed anti-air self defence capabilities, MILAC and NMI are jointly creating two Air-to-air missile systems, the Sublimator SIR-73 a Short-range InfraRed-guided (heat-seeking) missile with a sensitive, cryogenic cooled seeker and a substantial "off-boresight" capability- the seeker can "see" targets up to 60° off the missile's centerline. It can be targeted by a helmet-mounted sight (HMS) allowing pilots to designate targets by looking at them. Minimum engagement range is projected to be about 300 meters, with a target maximum aerodynamic range of nearly 30 km (18.75 mi) at altitude.

To round off and complete this defence package, the Sublimator SARAH-37 is also being developed. This cost intensive project is intending to become the NoN's Semi-Active Radar/Active radar Homing Long Range missile. It will use a combination of semi-active radar homing for initial acquisition and mid-course update, inertial navigation to reach the target at extreme range, and active radar for terminal homing. The range will depend on the flight profile, with estimations placing range at 80 nautical miles (150 km) for a direct shot to 215 nautical miles (398 km) for a cruise glide profile.

After an extensive trial period, the MILAC XA-1 'Krieg' Fast Close Air Support Craft has finally been deemed fully operational. The 'X' designation, signifying it's prototypical classification has been removed. The Krieg is now ready to fulfill its name and has become the A-1, the 'A' signifying its Assault or Ground Attack niche within the NoN's now re-emerging airforce.

An_A-12_Blackbird_under_constructio.jpg

An A-1 FCAS under construction within the former holdings of Dejen Aviation Engineering Complex (DAVEC), now under the tutelage of MILitary Aviation Complex (MILAC)

After concerns about certain armaments of the Krieg, the imported MMW GAU-8 30mm cannon and the 'Kinetic Dart' system of the MILAC's now chief designer, Lucretius Von Neridius were addressed- the results being a complete overhaul and exclusion of the GAU system and a deeper look at the Dart system.

With careful consideration and scrutiny, MILAC tentatively agreed to keep the Darts. They were viewed as a cheap alternative to standard conventional bombs- while a 500kg bomb would have an arguably better damage output against enemy mobile armour, the Krieg could not carry sufficient amounts of these weapons to dismiss the 20kg darts' own effectiveness.

Furthermore, the Darts were seen to be the best surgical tool to use in urban conflicts- a single dart could be trusted to destroy the single tank it was dropped on, minimizing collateral damage.

In conclusion, the Darts could be used as a cost-saving weapon while also having the ability to be used to destroy more tanks in a single sortie without the A-1 having to rearm, while furthermore acting as a surgical and precision weapon where collateral damage was unacceptable. They were promptly put into service by Nod Military Industries (NMI), the local munitions manufacturer, where it was used to identify the uniqueness of the Krieg as much as its quad 30mm array did.

The A-1 can now be armed with these darts, at the discretion of the mission commander, in addition to the quad 30mm array and the various cruise missiles, rockets, ATGMs, bombs, cluster munitions and AA-defence missiles within the NoN's arsenals, as long as the combined weight of these armaments do not exceed the maximum safe payload of the Krieg, a reasonable 4,000kgs given the Mach 3+ speeds attained by the craft.

MILAC was immediately tasked with mass producing the A-1, and within a span of two years (OOC: I won't be using these for 2 months) the first two squadrons of A-1's, deemed the 1st and 2nd Tactical Bomber Wings respectively, rolled out unto the tarmac at Lideta Army Complex's Airstrip.

OXCART_aircraft_on_the_ramp_at_Groo.jpg

The first ten A-1's to be completed at the former DAVEC plant. Note the red 'ring protectors' installed on the jet intakes, akin to the foam packaging present on a new toy. Removed upon activation.

The 60 planes will be used for Support purposes, with several provisions being made for the future that include developing Air-Superiority and High-speed Reconnaissance variants.

This is good news for the NoN's burgeoning MILAC corporation- the A-1 was the first mass produced product developed since the NoN's independence. Government and investor support had begun to waiver in the face of stagnant sales in recent memory. The overall ineffectiveness and absence of any NoN Frontal Aviation Assets during the East African and Arabian Wars did not help the situation further.

Top-level Executives representing MILAC displayed joy over the success of the Krieg, and also expressed favourable hopes for the future. There has still been no word from the Executive Ministry on whether the Krieg will be available for export at this time or the near future. Speculation abounds that the Executive Minister wishes to keep the internal workings of the Krieg a secret, while others insist that an Export Variant would most likely be developed in the face of interest from approved buyer nations.

OOC: You can get the gist of what is and what is not Classified... I won't mark them as such because it would ruin the flow of the post.

If you like, feel free to purchase.

NON'S PEACETIME ECONOMY AT ALL TIME HIGH

This week, shortly after the announcement of the Nation of Nod's Executive Ministerial decision to accept full-scale mass production of MILitary Aviation Complex's newest product, the A-1 'Krieg' Fast Close Air Support Craft, MILAC shares rose to a remarkable high in spite of the looming crises in Europe and Northern Africa.

All NoN citizens who still possess their government issued shares in MILAC are estimated to garner at least a 90% increase in stock value!

Furthermore, other important NoN industrial sites have benefitted from the massive order of two fully equipped squadrons of A-1's, all of the subsidiaries of the NoN's Military Industrial Conglomerate.

Nod Military Industries (NMI) and National Defence International Inc. (NDII) have reported significant activity in preparing for the required logistics of the craft, as more squadrons have been ordered for the future.

Hibret Machine Tools Engineering Complex +88%

Gafat Armament Engineering Complex +33%

Homicho Ammunition Engineering Complex +37%

Bishoftu Motorization Engineering Complex +45%

Dejen Aviation Engineering Complex +66%

Nazareth Canvass and Garment Factory +12%

Zuqualla Steel Rolling Mill +52%

This unprecedented growth as also trickled down into the civilian sector. The Executive Ministry intends to use this new found economic clout to jump-start the pre-Arabian War efforts of Infrastructure reconstruction, renewal and reinforcement. Furthermore, increased spending will focus on beautifying the Kolfe Memorial in the West and fund the reclaiming and restoring operations in the irradiated and unnamed north-eastern province.

Depleted Uranium Invisible Artillery Shells

Current stealth applications usually settle into distinct 'niches' amongst the different armed services, Land, Air and Sea. For the most part, Stealth has settled into a defensive/survivability stance, most notably in the air force and more recently, the Navy.

For the air force, Stealth technology meant that aircraft could approach a target invisible to radar and maintain that advantage throughout the mission. Furthermore, Stealth technology for helicopters provides an incredible advantage in mounting search and destroy, Special Forces recon, or counter insurgency missions deep into enemy territory.

But what about implementing stealth in a purely offensive role?

MILAC, in the early days of turmoil during the XA-1 Krieg Close Air Support Craft project, NoN developers toyed with the idea. As a result, the current A-1 model has the size of about a barn door on enemy radar. While not inherently an amazing and war-winning breakthrough, it was a modest step considering that same barn door is, in actuality, the size of the entire barn itself.

But in their hubris, Senior Design staffers failed to notice their flaws. The craft was still noticable on radar, and could still be capable of being destroyed. Thus, total reliance on Stealth vanished, and the XA-1 leaned more towards evading and outrunning its enemies via +Mach 3 speeds.

Current developments in Europe have caused NoN researchers to turn towards one of the oldest weapons of war... Artillery.

In all artillery battles, once a shell is fired, it can be tracked by an observer back to its source and then return fire can be directed against whoever is firing. No amount of camouflage or evasion could defeat a determined and well equipped Counter-battery, especially in the NoN's case of technologically advanced adversaries.

But imagine if the shell were composed of a material that rendered it invisible to radar?

The secret lay not just in the same Stealth aircraft technology used in the 'Krieg', but also in the development of a Stealth ceramic that could withstand tremendous explosive barrel pressures and still maintain an integrity through the arc of its trajectory. The search for just such a molecularly aligned composite ceramic was inspired by the composite material created almost wholely by accident in one of NMI's chem labs.

Nod Military Industries, the sole supplier of military and civilian munitions as well as Infantry survivability equipment (The NoN's signature Armour-Carapace system comes to mind) within Nod controlled Ethiopia, experimented with ceramics made from powdered, depleted uranium. Their intent was to provide an upgraded Armour plating to supplement the Elite Cadre's already impressive Armour-Carapace system, compared to normal Light and the more versatile Heavy Infantry.

NMI immediately turned to Depleted Uranium, whilst ignoring health concerns. Initial tests showed that DU was sufficiently durable, but had an immense weight. Thus, pure DU was not used, but instead powdered and mixed in with traditional armour ceramics.

The resulting dielectric material has approximately 92% the bulk density of depleted uranium, but is about 20 times harder. So far, the ceramic has demonstrated similar 'low radar observable characteristics' akin to the materials used on most contemporary Stealth aircraft whilst retaining the signature strength of Uranium.

The latest joint Venture by all three partners of the Nation of Nod's Military Conglomerate, code named: Project Black Dagger, seeks to develop stealthed munitions for all existing and upcoming artillery pieces of the NoN. The hope is to develop a no doubt expensive, but crucial ability to deploy weapons that were invisible even to radar tracking planes flying over head behind enemy lines.

An initial barrage of these expensive shells could be used to open up a larger scale assault enmass when coupled with MRSI and by complete surprise. Shells would start falling, and the enemy wouldn’t know where they were coming from until after the advantage of five or more unanswered salvos. By then, and with the advantage of surprise, the damage might well be done enough for traditional rounds to follow from a displaced location.

 • 3 weeks later...

Nyani sighed. Her recent trip to Australia was an eyeopening one.

The world is filled with those who rest in their cradles of power, their people safe... protected. They assume no force can challenge them...

Sitting alone in her desk, she looked at package that was delivered to her. Certain Fourtune rested in the box, a gift from Minister Orlovsky that he had reluctantly given her, out of trust, not the knowledge of what she intended to do with it.

As she began the task that lay before her, carefully making sure her quarters were secured, she brooded further.

Our time will come. We will prepare. We will grow stronger. We shall let our enemies rest, we will let them be decieved... we will blind them in their own arrogance and excesses.

Looking back at the now opened box,

Sometimes, one must grasp certain fortune in their very hand, and never let go.

We will prevail, one way... or the other.

A pair of NDII 'Terminator' Armoured Being Carriers (ABC), patrolling NoN undercity laneways

The NDII 'Terminator' is a new Armoured Being Carrier (ABC) designed to support tank and infantry operations, primarily in urban areas. It is a heavily armoured heavyweight infantry fighting vehicle based on a highly modular variant of the NDII Devastator Super-Heavy chassis.

This addition to the NoN armed forces comes to fill a void that was glaringly empty. Previously, personnel transportation duties rested on helicopter, truck-based and lightly armoured vehicle transports, the NDII Hunter squaring most of the burden. However, these vehicles were neither armored nor as mobile as a main battle tank. Therefore it was envisioned that the required combat vehicle should be built on a tank chassis and offer the same or better protection as an MBT.

Previously the development of this ABC did not progress much due to lack of funds, but following years of renewed pirate and tribal attacks against the NoN's fleet of Hunters, which exposed the vulnerability of the Armoured Personnel Carrier variant to rocket-propelled grenades, ATGMs and medium calibre (20mm to 30mm) guns, had forced the Ministry of Military Affairs hand and re-opened the development.

The Terminator is equipped with a frontal, remotely and internally operated weapon housing. This housing typically holds a pair of linked 30mm Lancer Autocannon with a 30mm Singer Automatic Grenade launcher (a single pair contains a cannon and grenade launcher for total of two cannons and two launchers). The housing is positioned so that it can immediately engage targets located at higher elevations (building windows) while also retaining its ability to fire forward. Each pair is capable of independent elevation and traversing, limited only to the turret's base orientation. To enable targets to be engaged under day and night conditions when the ABC is stationary or moving, a computerized fire-control system is fitted. It can also use optional top-mounted search light attachments during security details. The dual-feed cannon/grenade launching system has a cyclic rate of fire of up to 600 rds/min. A total of 2700 rounds of ready use ammunition can be carried. The cannon/grenade system can fire a wide range of ammunition types including: High Explosive - Tracer (HE-T), Armor-Piercing Discarding Sabot (APDS), High-Explosive Fragmentation (HE-FRAG) and Armor-Piercing - Tracer (AP-T). Variants of the Terminator often opt for a different load-out of the weapon housing. The housing is fully integrable with existing and newly developed weapons systems and can contain a wide variety of combinations to suit existing mission requirements. Common load-outs include quad .50 cal Kneecapper Machine guns (pictured in previous press release), dual heavy flamethrowers, 80mm Mortar, 100mm Recoiless Rifle or improved optics and communications for unarmed command variants.

Removal of the main turret of the Devastator chassis had freed enough room for the Omni-directional Rocket and GrenAde System Module to be installed and included as a standard. Essentially an armoured disk located at the top-rear of the ABC, this launcher is supported by a vertical support that is essentially a boom, able to lower and raise the platform in order for the launcher to have clearance to fire a wide array of ordinance in any direction, 360 degrees, regardless of vehicular orientation in controlled volleys or simultaneous ordinance saturations. Due to logistical concerns, most commanders opt for the launcher to retain only smoke grenades with only a handful of Stabber 120 mm AT/HGM's, giving the Terminator the ability to project covering smoke in a wide area of dispersal in order to protect itself and neighbouring allies from optically tracked and aerial threats in a wide area.

Like the NDII Devastator, the Terminator has been designed for a high level of crew survival on the battlefield with modular armor, reinforced V-shaped belly armor pack, and NBC protection. It is also ready to be equipped with a similar Deciever active protection system. The basic vehicle shell is composed of hard steel (owing to aluminum's flammability it is omitted from the Terminator) and a lighter Devastator armour and protection package. The reinforced top hull protects against top attack bomblets and AT rockets, including "hanging" seats to improve crew protection from explosions below the vehicle. The vehicle is outfitted with advanced vision and imaging systems (electro optical, laser and thermal) and crew and passenger comfort/protection. Frontal glacis armour also houses reinforced armor plating and an external rib-cage grid, while armoured skirts extend the sides, fully covering the ABC's tracks and thus limiting the chances of this beast becoming a mobility kill. A top hatch designated for the pilot crew and a cabin hatch for the passengers are designed as escape mechanisms should the Terminator be disembarked immediately.

VEHCL_03a.jpg

An Amphibious Assault Variant of the Terminator, shown with twin heavy flamers, search lights and sponson mounted jet intakes for propulsion in the water. Of particular note is a fully equipped ORGSM fitted with a double belt of laser guided 90mm Spiker GP Rockets (laser designator is seen on the turret housing), frontal cage armour, and emergency top hatches (circular near turret for crew, red triangular between search lights for the passengers)

The Terminator is capable of maneuvering in difficult terrain, powered by the same twin 1,200 hp (895 kW) V12 air-cooled diesel engines of the Devastator, however, with its significantly reduced weight, the Terminator can achieve much higher top speeds. Able to carry up to 14 troops (fully equipped infantrymen, typically a single Militant Cell) and one stretcher, or six stretchers and medical equipment, the Terminator hopes to lampoon common APC systems that only guard against small arms and rudimentary shrapnel damage. The ABC's rear entrance was redesigned to be a wider, double armoured door ramp. Upon the ramp's deployment, the ABC has enough room for a single gunner to operate the hanging and internal Torrent machinegun/underslung single shot AT-R launcher to provide cover fire for troops disembarking to his left and right.

Production is underway full force, with existing flat bed trucks being phased out of infantry deployment strategies.

As the Second East African was slowly ground into a Cold War of sorts- both sides held an uneasy tension with Sudan playing the part of a battlefield of words and threatening gestures, a notable increase in the number and frequency of Nodic military recruitment propaganda began to circulate.

Most affected by this recent 'surge' was the Nodic Air Militancy. Air Militant Command, or the AMC, realized the crucial role of the newly reactivated Nodic airforce and the almost status quo of being woefully outnumbered by its adversaries...

If you had a satellite hovering above a nondescript portion of Nod-held coastline in the southern portion of the Horn of Africa, you would have been treated to a great surprise.

Indefatigable-class Strategic Amphibious Assault Transport (SAAT)

During the early morning hours, several MILitary Aviation Complex (MILAC) designated 'ships' were seen floating near the coastline. Upon closer inspection, concerned locals saw what they believed to be a mass failure in aviation. Seven airliners had reportedly been sighted floating in the ocean- apparent victims of pilots ditching their crafts into the ocean.

These reports were ignored by Nod Security Forces (NSF). Indeed- the civilian arm of the Executive Ministry's law enforcement had been notified prior to the launch of said vessels. Soon enough, concerned onlookers were greeted by the collective roar of several dozen high-powered turbojets. It appears the previously 'vulnerable' airliners were in a class all on their own.

MILAC had been quiet about its newest creation. Reports that much of this project's technical know-how had been gleaned from a rather sordid deal with the Sudanese military and Government were quickly quashed before word spread.

The Indefatigable-class was a beast of enormous proportions. Measuring in at over 100 meters in length, with a 44 meter wingspan, this amalgamation of 540 tonnes fully loaded of titanium, carbon fiber/Bismaleimide(BMI) and other alloys was capable of traveling at speeds up to 600 knots at a height anywhere from 5m to 22 meters above sea level, allowing it to remain seaworthy even at sea state 9, if need be.

The Indefatigable is capable of transporting up to 130 tonnes of cargo over land, sea or (relatively low) air, unarmored, or 115 tonnes of cargo. With a planned 'arms and armor' program MILAC intends to leave this machine the capability to be a combat powerhouse in the near future.

This remarkable cargo capacity was due in no small part to its unique design. As the craft is stationary, it floats on the surface of the ocean much like any sea faring vessel. When its eight engines, capable of 139.4 KN of dry or 169.2KN of wet thrust, ignited, however, the Indefatigable-class utilizes its 'flying-boat' like hull to provide a step for takeoff. As it picks up speed, air is compressed under its relatively short stabilizing wings until enough pressure produces lift which supports its girth. The SAAT exploits an interesting trait of winged aircraft; when one flies very close to the ground its lift increases remarkably. This is because an aircraft flying very low traps air between the wings and the ground and if the machine has wings with a very large surface area, it can lift incredible loads with very little effort. This fact, coupled with the inherent efficiency of the engines MILAC had chosen for this Leviathan has given the Indefatigable-class a range of 2,100 km, and a noticeably greater cargo capacity of a conventional aircraft of the same size for half the fuel costs.

Surprisingly, stealth was another feature the Executive Ministry demanded of MILAC. Even with such a skimming vehicle's inherent ability to fly under radar and over sonar care was given to apply an airframe with a relatively low cross-sectional height to this design, a reverse-engineered 'flickering skin' system to evade Electro-optically guided munitions, and MILAC's standard heat ablating tile exhaust troughs for IR signature reduction.

The Indefatigable-class line of transports will be privy to a wide variety of combat survival enhancements. Fully equipped with a 'glass-pilot enclosure', advanced avionics, radar and flight control systems a key member of this initiative will be a triple-redundancy of all vital combat and engineering systems borrowed from the NDII Devastator Super Heavy Tank's design. Of particular note, the SAAT will be equipped with a Full Authority Engine or Electronics Control (FADEC).

FADEC works by receiving multiple input variables of the current flight condition including air density, throttle lever position, engine temperatures, engine pressures, and many other parameters. The inputs are received by the FADEC's Electronic Engine Controller, a high powered computational and processing unit, where it is analyzed up to 200 times per second. Engine operating parameters such as fuel flow, stator vane position, bleed valve position, and others are computed from this data and applied as appropriate. In short, the FADEC's basic purpose is to provide optimum engine efficiency for a given flight condition. MILAC speculates that due to such provisions, planned for the immediate future, will give upgraded SAAT's a maximum range of 2,400 km.

Multiple variants of the Indefatigable-class' platform have been outlined. Various combat and civilian capacities include

- a 'Black-ops' model, designed for stealthy insertion of a number of specially trained personnel and or vehicles
- a 'Combat Evacuation' model intended for Search & Rescue/Recovery (S&R), Combat Medicine, Humanitarian Relief in high-risk locations
- an unarmored and armed cargo and logistics platform
- a Command-class variant bestowed with a wide variety of Command and Control systems including an enhanced radar and sonar, enlarged TASS (target acquisition and designation), communications, satellite relay control and others
- an Anti-surface/Submarine variant armed with dorsal mounted AshM missiles, Heavy Rocket Launching systems, Torpedo bays and depth charge launchers

The standard SAAT will end its testing trials within the month, where it will serve as some of the first 'vessels' under the command of the newly created Militant Naval Command (MNC or MILNAC) in a fully armed and armored standard role. Given eight disposable dorsal mounted heavy missile silos of the AS/S variant, 10 tons of armor, a single dedicated Anti-munition/Anti-Air CIWS with 6000 30mm rounds, and four AAPD launchers, the Indefatigable-class will exist to bolster the NoN's rapid response and deployment capacity to respond in kind to any external or internal threats whilst existing with a reduced cargo capacity of 115 tonnes.

OOC: Any issues, please post in the Technology stats thread. I read it often. Its pretty late and I may be off with a few of my estimations, but this craft is based upon the Caspian Sea Monster's dimensions and the Lun-class' documented capabilities, mixed in with a few 'modern' modifications thanks to Sargun's reverse-engineered technology and the wonders of imagination.
