The Downside to Open Borders

On one hand, considering the nation's open border policy, some would expect them to go there. On the other, the distance involved might cause others to look elsewhere, thinking the rogues would try to escape to somewhere a little closer.

Those subscribing to the first theory would be right, actually. Viniland's relatively lax border security was a prime consideration in the choice of their destination.

As the passenger liner steamed into the harbor, the man and woman glanced once at each other, embraced as if they were a couple, then went into their cabin to retrieve their baggage.

They actually hoped just to live out the rest of their lives in a quiet, unassuming manner, but as the ship began docking, they both knew there was a distinct possibility that they would not be left alone.

As the couple made their way into the first security check, they were asked to show their identifications, passports and to subject their luggage to scanning.

"If you folks are immigrants, then you must go to the "Immigrants" gate in order to regularize your situation.", said the security clerk.

They complied with all demands, their ID's and passports indicating that they were Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson.

Their luggage contained nothng but clothes (including an extra pair of shoes for each, and a few small toiletry items (toothbrushes and toothpaste, a comb, and a hairbrush).

When the security clerk indicated the gate for those wishing to immigrate, they nodded, thanking tha man, and once they had been confirmed as carrying nothing incriminating or illegal, immediately headed over to the indicated location...
