The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

It was a beautiful day in the City of New York. The sun was shining brightly, the sky was bright blue, the grass was greener, the winds were blowing gently, and the birds were chirping cheerfully. In the New York capital – and the largest city in the Republic of New England – people went about their business. The streets were crowded with crowds of people going on with their regular lives – businessmen rushing to work, ice-cream vendors selling tasty ice-cream, a high school couple holding hands as they went into a shop, a taxi driver driving through the congested streets, a Stasi official chatting with a couple of persons on the street, etc. Time Square was bustling with activity, and as were Wall Street as thousands of frenzied speculators and investors bought/sold/traded stocks. It was a pretty average day in New York City.

But what the city didn’t know was that a threat was lurking among its population. After airport officials handled his passport and documents – but not before subjecting him to a near-humiliating and thorough body cavity search – that man picked up his bags and walked through the exits, the automatic doors sliding open as he did so. He came – no, more like fled – from a certain country in the Pacific after a certain incident a while ago concerning biochemical weapons. In a sense, he was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, a threat that the Republic of New England wasn’t aware of at the moment.

At least, not yet.

***24 hours earlier***

"Drop that weapon now!" Of course, police were so predictable. And couldn't they see that she had a hostage at the end of that knife? One that was

He sighed, though he made sure to look as scared as the other civilians in the airport. He'd tried to tell her not to panic, that this was a routine search, but she was a rookie operative, and in turn insisted that she'd seen some of the other passengers eyeing her. Fortunately, he'd not been standing near her at the time she broke and panicked, and so he could maintain his cover as an innocent bystander.

He watched the inevitable conclusion...in the end both she and the hostage died, the woman she held bleeding to death from a slashed throat, and the operative herself only moments later, from several well-placed gunshots, though not before she had thrown her knife into a security officer's eye.

----

Despite the tragedy, the area was simply cordoned off, and the rest of the airport got back to its business. In time, the female's companion simply boarded his flight, ending up in New York.

He sighed when they subjected him to such a thorough search, but he had nothing to hide, and the only possible incriminating evidence that could be found on him was in the contents of a thermos in his luggage--apparently containing only water, though in reality it containd a virus similar to what had been released in Somal. Inert and harmless, so long as it remained in there.

A news report of the hostage situation was released back in Promised Land about the time he walked out of the airport. If New England's intelligence organization was on its toes, truly monitering world events, they might notice that the flight that the hostage-holder was on had been scheduled to arrive in New England about 12 hours ago (and had indeed arrived on schedule), though it was not the same flight that this man had arrived on.

Indeed, they had noticed. But the federal government, not wanting to incite unnecessary panic in the city, ordered that the situation be handled in private. But of course, the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB), utilizing its extensive resources and connections, had found out that the hostage-holder – possibly a rogue agent from Promised Land – was on the flight to New York City, and appropriate actions were taken. The Stasi were duly notified and undercover agents were placed in the waiting area where the passengers would exit the airliner. They knew one of the agents, named Jessica Forbes, was supposed to be onboard – and it would’ve been the case if it weren’t for the news of the tragedy unfolding in New Jerusalem, Promised Land. But still, it was better to be safe, and the Stasi, as per the norm, duly subjected each passenger to a thorough body cavity search. Nothing came up.

After another airliner arrived and the passengers exited, the Stasi airport officials subjected them to such a search. They came across a young man, which upon closer inspection, had a thermos in his luggage – which exceeded the restrictions imposed by the authorities. But the Stasi officials didn’t pay any closer detail to the contents in the thermos, which appeared to be water, and so let the man go on with a warning.

If only had they known that the man that they had just searched was yet another rogue agent – and he was now loose in New England. They would find out about that sooner or later…

Preferably later, if this man, one Rolph Wick, had anything to say or do about it.

Before leaving Promised Land, he had raided one of his secret caches, something that each agent always set up in case of need, where he had stored cash and other items, including false passports and ID's, from previous missions where his cover had not been compromised.

The ID he used now was not actually one of those, to avoid tipping his own government off, but rather, a combination of names from previous ID's. To everyone else, he was Theo Chandler.

And to avoid being traced, he found a small, two-bit, run-down hotel and signed in...anonymously. The desk clerk was more than happy to forget the name requirement when she had a hundred dollars waved under her nose, and told him he was welcome to stay two nights, but no more.

The agent may have two days to stay in that hotel in New England, but these two days would be fateful. Back at the airport, the airport staff ran through some papers regarding the man and grew suspicious when none of the information matched up with any existing databases in the files. It was quickly brought to the Stasi’s attention, and the State Intelligence Bureau was briefed about this. They ran some checks over the documents, utilizing advanced networks, and still nothing else came up. This further confirmed their suspicion; what kind of person was there that had no information about him whatsoever, and one that had so recently entered the country?

And so, the Stasi decided to do some tracking work. Calling up every informant and contact in New York City, the Stasi put out a ‘lookout’ for the man, instructing the agents and informants not to approach him, but to shadow him and report his position/activities, etc. With that, the search began.

It would take some time, with hundreds of undercover agents and informants combing the Five Boroughs for the whereabouts of this man. Finally, in a run-down area of the Bronx, a couple of citizens, Stasi informants, reported seeing a young man coming out of a small hotel named the Bronx Inn. The young man seemed to match the Stasi’s description, and the Stasi was duly informed of this. Several undercover agents were dispatched to the Bronx Inn, where they would monitor the place. One agent, named William Morris, went into the Inn, where he checked in anonymously (he also bribed the desk clerk $200, plus an additional $50 to place him in a room near the ‘last person that checked in’, as he cleverly put it). The desk clerk never realized of this, still elated about the money she had made in so little time as she handed him a key.

Morris smirked to himself as he went to his room, located on the second floor. “I’m now in.” He whispered into a radio-receiver hidden inside his coat once he was inside his room.

Affirmative, we have the whole person covered. We will keep in contact with you if we see anything. Over and out.” A voice said on the other side.

Morris nodded. “Affirmative, I shall do the same. Over and out.” He said. Walking over to the bed, Morris placed the bag he was carrying on the bed and unzipped it. Inside was a laptop, a couple of Syracuse P99 pistols, an optic fiber, as well as monitoring equipment. Picking up a P99, Morris checked to see if there were ammo in the magazine; there were. Loading the magazine in place, Morris breathed as he sat down on the bed, holding the pistol. It has now begun…

Of course, he was not idle during those two days either. He knew that it would probably be only a matter of time before someone caught on to his ruse, even in a city this big. He needed to keep moving, find a way out and into less populated regions.

Considering his profession, he was naturally suspicious when the seedy hotel not only picked up another customer, but in the room right next to his. Despite the fact that nothing about Rolph's presence was overtly incriminating, he went through his belongings one more time, just making sure.

Finally, closing his single suitcase, he placed it in the closet, shut the door, then pulled one of his own hairs, and licking his finger, stuck the hair over the crack between the two halves of the closet door. A simple, low-tech but ingenius way of finding out if someone had bveen snooping.

Then he went out, to try and find transportation. On the way out, he also gave the clerk another fifty to let him stay one more day.

Just before the man left, Morris got up from the bed and picked up the optic fiber. Walking over to the bed, Morris placed the optic cord under it and then activated the fiber. The screen flickered on and showed the hallway outside. Finally, he could hear footsteps outside and indeed, here he was. The man walked past the door and off at the distance.

Morris smirked. So it has begun.

Once the footsteps faded away and all were silent, Morris got up from the floor and walked back to the bed. Putting the optic fiber down, Morris picked up the P99 and a small case, containing electronic lockpicks inside. Walking out of the room, Morris headed for the man’s room. Getting the lockpick out from the case, Morris positioned it at the door lock and activated it. The lockpick made a slight noise as it ‘zapped’ the door lock (it didn’t damage the lock mechanism nor left any residues). Opening the door and stepping inside, Morris looked around the room.

While he was doing so, his radio-receiver rang and Morris answered it. “Yes?

Target has been spotted outside, we’re now tracking him. It seems that he’s heading for the intersection nearby. We’ll keep you updated. Over and out.

Morris nodded. “Very well, keep on him. I’m in the target’s room, and I’m checking around. I’ll contact you later. Over and out.

With that, Morris continued to look around the room. So far, nothing else looked out of place. Morris opened the closet, but unfortunately, he didn’t know the man had placed a hair on the closet door and so he had been caught without being aware of it.

Inside, he could see a suitcase. Picking it up, Morris opened it and examined the contents. Nothing else seemed incriminating. After a while, he closed the suitcase and placed it back on the exact position it had been on. Closing the door, Morris looked around the room one more time. “I’ve checked the room out and so far, the (expletive) has been clean so far. Keep on monitoring him, but don’t attack or confront him. Over and out.

"Yes sir. Over and out."

Morris walked out of the room and carefully closed the door. He then went back to his room.

OOC2: I could have Morris notice the lock of hair, but then nobody’s perfect and this could make things interesting. That, and I’m having fun with this. :awesome:

OOC: Yep, that little trick was inspired by 007, all right... :D And thank you for not having him notice the hair. Makes things all the better if and when he does get caught or killed. :D

IC: Unaware at the moment that his room was being searched, and sure he was being watched despite that fact that he had yet to spot anyone suspicious, Rolph acted like he was completely at ease, simply strolling down the street until he came to an alley, which he promptly turned down.

Fairly confident he was out of sight of any pursuers, he immediately turned into the poorly-lit bar that entered into the alley.

After another discreetly -exchanged bribe, the bartender indicated that there was a back entrance that let onto the street--on the OTHER side of the wall that the alley had fenced in. he walked out of there as calm as could be, having also managed to purchase a small firearm from the proprietor of the place (one easily concealed), and resumed his search for a way out of the city.

The Stasi agents continued to follow the man at a distance, down the street. But midst the crowds, the agents lost visual of him – the man must have turned down an alley or somewhere else. After contacting a couple of informers, the agents learned that the man had indeed turned down an alley.

Going down the alley, the agents noticed a fairly run-down bar on the right, which they promptly entered. The bar, despite its looks and surroundings, was fairly crowded and the agents were having a fairly hard time finding the man.

Approaching the bartender, the agents inquired him about the whereabouts of the ‘last known person’; the bartender, realizing that these two men wanted to inquire about the man that had recently entered the place and bribed him $100, lied through his teeth, saying that he never heard or seen the man. However, the agents – well-tuned in the art of lie detection – saw through the man’s act. Discreetly flashing their Stasi badges – much to the bartender’s horror – the agents told the bartender they wanted a private talk with him and promptly led him down a corridor to his office.

A while later, the agents walked out of the office (if anyone walked into the office later, they would notice the bartender doubled over, obviously in pain. The agents had utilized means of ‘physical persuasion’). Looking around, they noticed that there was a back entrance that led out to the street – truly, the target must’ve escaped through that. The agents exited through the door, where after conferring with several informers on street corners they learned that the target had gone in the direction of Queens. The agents quickly contacted their counterparts in Queens to keep a watch out for the man.

The man didn't know about the bartender's fate, and if he had, he wouldn't have cared. What he would care about was the fact that the man had given up information about him. If he ever came back that way and found the man had squealed, the barkeep would be as good as dead.

But he didn't know yet, and for now, he actually had managed to purchase a car--a beat-up old thing, and a bit of a gas-guzzler, but it worked, and that was the important thing.

But before he got in to drive it, he went into a department store, and purchased several small items to disguise himself--a new pair of jeans, a dark brown, generic shirt, a baseball cap (no sports names, just the cap itself), a brown, curly wig (what hair he had was dirty blonde), and cotton balls.

He went into the stores's bathroom, and when he came out, he looked completely different. Whereas before he'd been wearing street clothes, he now wore his new purchases. The cotton balls were stuffed inside his cheeks to subtly alter the look of his face, and actually managed to make his nose look smaller in comparison to his cheeks than before.

He went back and retrieved the car, filling it up and then driving back to the parking lot nearest the hotel, and put enough money in the machine to let him park for 24 hours. Ducking down out of view of anyone who could be watching, he removed his disguise and put his other clothes back on, then remaining ducked down as he stuffed the disguise items inside this clothing, edged out of the door.

Creeping along, he edged up to the next car in line, then stood straight up, not caring if he was now seen, as he was returning to the hotel.

Little did the man know was that there were Stasi informers inside the department store – heck, the cashier and the man who showed him the jeans section were Stasi informers. And so was the car dealer that sold the man that old, beat-up car (that unknown to the man, had a tracking device implanted beneath the car). After the car dealer and later the department store cashier tipped the Stasi agents off, the agents were well on the right track, following the car from a distance in their SUVs.

When the car stopped at the parking lot nearest the hotel, the agents kept a sharp eye on him. They grew suspicious when the man ducked out of view and then popped back into view, next to a different car. When the man continued on to the hotel in the new car, the agents continued following him. Using cell phones, the agents informed their counterparts that the man was coming back to the hotel.

Unaware that his disguise had not worked, or that the car had a tracking device in it, he strode calmly back into the hotel.

As he entered the room, he was unworried--until he inspected the closet door, and noticed the hair was gone. this confirmed his suspicions. At the very least, he was being watched. Most likely, he guessed that it was his next-door neighbor. Perhaps he ought to pay that man a visit.

After making sure the gun was concealed under the waistband of his pants (safety on to avoid shooting himself), he walked right out the door once again. It wasn't very far to the next door, and when he got there, he raised a hand and knocked.

Upon hearing a knock on the door, Morris looked up. Smirking slightly, the Stasi agent swiftly placed his bag on the other side of the bed (so the man couldn’t see it) and picked up the P99s. Activating his radio-receiver, Morris whispered into it, “Target is knocking on my door. Take appropriate measures. Over and out.

Acknowledged, sir. Over and out.” That ‘appropriate measures’ meant a couple more agents, armed with the P99 and the M4-M1014 shotguns, were to check into the hotel in anonymity while the other agents were to shadow each entrance/exit of the hotel.

Holstering the P99s into a side holster and putting on a jacket to conceal them, Morris walked over to the door and opened it. He found himself face-to-face with the man. “Oh, hey…what’s up?” He inquired casually.

Plastering on a smile, Rolph leaned casually against the doorframe and folded his arms, showing both hands to be empty of any weapons or other tools.

"You didn't happen to hear anyone in my room while I was gone, did you? I found a dirty footprint on the floor when I came back, one that wasn't there when I left."

Morris raised an eyebrow in mock confusion – though he smirked in the inside. “No, I didn’t hear anyone in your room or anything like that…why?” It was a good thing Morris was incredibly skilled in lying. After all, it was a requirement to become a Stasi agent.

IC: Still wearing the smile, which would look real--lying was all part of a day's work when you were a spy, or even an ex-spy, like him--he stood straight once again, casually unfolding his arms and hooking them into the waistabnd of his pants, at the hips. Morris wouldn't know it, but that put his own weapon within easy reach.

"Are you sure? You didn't notice the creaky floorboard?"

Morris nodded. "Yes, I'm sure...though if the floorboard did creak, it must've been a rat." He said with a smile.

By then, the two armed agents had checked into the hotel – but not before bribing the desk clerk $500 to allow them to bring weapons in. The Stasi badges definitely helped too, and the desk clerk nervously nodded as she took the money. Nodding, the two agents readied their weapons and crept up the stairs to the second floor – where Morris and the man was on – being careful not to make any sounds.

"Funny," he said, subtly shifting the grip of his left hand on his jeans, covertly grabbing the gun and turning off the safety even as he talked. "I would have said it looked more like a pig's (OOC: Reference to derogatory term for police) foot."

On the word 'like,' he eased the pistol out of his waistband, then as he finsished the sentence, took a step back and fired twice from the hip, one shot aimed at Morris' heart, the other at the

He had seen it coming, but still, this caught him off-guard. As the man backed away, Morris felt something hit him in the chest – he was being shot at! Luckily, he was wearing body armor beneath his clothing, but still the force dispelled him backwards, falling toward the ground – just in time for the second bullet to narrowly miss his head.

But the shots didn’t go unheard. The two agents on the stairs, upon hearing gunshots, immediately rushed up the stairs. Kicking the corridor door open, the two agents aimed their weapons – one with a shotgun and another with a P99 – toward the now-armed man and fired. "You're going to keep those hands out as you follow my instructions. Go out there, and tell your friends that I have a more potent version of the virus used on Somal. If you don't want it released into your population, you will let me walk out of this hotel unharmed. Go on, tell them." He indicated the door with his free hand.

Continuing to keep the barrel of the gun trained on Morris' forehead, he spoke slowly and clearly.

If you don't want it released into your population, you will let me walk out of this hotel unharmed. Go on, tell them." He indicated the door with his free hand.

Morris scowled a bit, but he nodded. “Very well, I will tell them.” The agent said as he backed out of the room into the corridor. As he did so, he began to formulate a plan inside his head. He remembered seeing a vial of water in the man’s bag when he’d investigated his room earlier…that must be where the ‘potent virus’ must be, but it was in his room, all the way there.

When he finally backed out of the room, Morris immediately ducked out of the man’s view before he could fire off a shot. Meeting up with his counterparts, Morris got out a P99 and indicated for a flash grenade. Using his radio-receiver, Morris called for reinforcements. The Stasi agents outside on the ground acknowledged this order and soon, reinforcements were well on the way – including snipers. The Stasi and the regular police also began cordoning off the section of the block around the hotel; the desk clerk and all of the residents in the first floor (few as they were) were led outside by agents. Morris also briefed the agents about the contents in the man’s room and instructed them to ‘seal it off’ at his signal.

Readying his P99, Morris carefully approached the door. “Well, we now know you’re one of the rogue agents that facilitated the biological attacks on Somal! Surrender yourself and come out with your hands up. Do not think about escape, you are completely surrounded!” He called out as he grasped his P99 and flash grenade. “Do it while you can, and all will be allright.

He nodded to one of the agents who readied a shotgun. The shotgun-wielding agent ran down the corridor, firing off a blank round to throw the man off as he passed by the open doorway. He was now on the opposite side of the door and was within distance of the man’s room.

That entrapment would have worked...except for one thing that everyone seemed to have forgotten. this hotel had been chosen because it was old and run-down. It had been a while since a building inspector had come by...and the walls between rooms were weak.

He had actually tested the wall on the opposite side of his room, and found that the application of a punch would break through. A full run with his whole body wouldn't be any less of a force. Ignoring the threat from outside, he backed up against the opposite wall, then dashed at the wall bordering his room--and despite the small doubt he had, he didn't stop or slow.

It was a good thing he didn't, and as he burst through the rotten wall into the closet of his own room, he retrieved his suitcase and withdrew the thermos, closing the suitcase again afterward.

Then he unscrewed the lid to the thermos and walked out to his own room's door.

"Last chance. Let me free, or the virus gets released!" He was going to get out of there one way or the other, even if he had to drink the contaminated water.

SCENARIO ONE

Morris and the other agents were shocked when the man stepped out of his own room, holding up the unscrewed thermos. As the agents trained their guns on the man, they were confronted with a dilemma. If they shot the man, he would surely drop the thermos and the virus would be released. If they tried to charge him, they would likely be shot and the virus would be released nevertheless.

Morris gritted his teeth as he steadied his P99. He had never expected it to happen that way, and his mind began racing. He didn’t want the man to go free, running amok in New England and risk having the situation that happened to Somal happen to his beloved country – all because he failed to stop it. But what could he do?

Remembering he had the flash grenade in his hand, Morris lowered his P99 and discreetly activated the flash grenade (it was designed to be activated with a small button on its side). He holstered it, and then suddenly tossed the flash grenade toward the man. A bright flash ensued, with Morris and the agents turning their eyes away. While the man was disoriented (thankfully he didn’t drop the thermos), Morris immediately charged at the man, managing to snatch the thermos away while another agent tackled the man into the ground.

Morris held up the thermos and put on the lid on it while the agent roughly hauled the man up from the ground. “You are under arrest under the pretext of assaulting a government agent, resisting arrest, promoting and plotting biological terrorism, not against Somal but also New England.” With that, Morris handed the thermos to the other agent. “This will be evidence. Let’s go.

SCENARIO TWO
