"Quit complaining, it's the only city with an airport in the entire nation," Erik replied. "Let's change that. This can remain the only Russian city left, as the Varangian descendants have probably built small Scandinavian towns in the north." "Why didn't the Russians ever use that land? I mean, hell, the Varangians would have build some really good stuff there." Vincent shrugged, "Either way, let's go to a Varangian city, set up some cameras, and declare our leadership over these people. I'm sure they'd be okay with going out of the commonwealth and into a leadership that understands their people much better." The two, plus Henrik Oppøre, drove north in a Volvo XC90 SUV. They took the only roads they could find, which were mainly old logging roads and farming roads, Erik driving at high speeds like he always did, and Vincent sleeping in the back seat. "It's a great looking place to rebuild Distopya, Erik." Henrik said from the passenger seat, "It's almost like we found Valhalla. This state, made of Scandinavian warriors that don't know it yet." "That's why we're calling it Austervania, the Eastern Hope." Eventually, the trio stumbled upon a small town called Buslungsheim. They stopped in the town square, parked the car, and got out. Henrik set up the camera and satellite transmissions while Erik set up the stage and area to speak. All that was needed was for the Hanseatic flag to be replaced with the new Austervanian flag. Vincent was in the car putting on eyeliner. He was always the showman. Finally, Henrik got done and met up with Erik by the large Austervanian flag. Erik yelled, "Hey Vincent! It's time!" Vincent got out of the car and joined his peers in front of the camera. Suddenly, all television channels or radios in the area were now broadcasting this feed, live. Vincent stepped forward and cleared his throat, he had prepared his speech in Old Norse. "Varangians, Scandinavian Russians, and Russians alike. My name is Vinzent Beauregard von Rennes. To the left of me is Erik Betrakte von Stockholm, and to the right is Henrik Oppøre von Kristiansand. We are norsemen like you, we come from the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. So, we are very much a part of your culture as you are a part of ours. For long, we have been considered a part of the Russians. I have been in the same situation. I am an Anglo-Norman, and the Normans have been considered French for centuries. But, I am Norse, and nothing else. We have also heard of your conquests in this area, holding back the oppressive forces of the United Francoist Empire. Your soft fields of green whisper tales of gore and of how you calmed the tides of war. Now, the hammer of the gods drive our ships to new lands. We'll fight the hordes, singing and crying, VALHALLA I AM COMING! Hello Varangians, welcome to the republic of Austervania!" The now large crowd cheered. And most in the area would think that was a great speech. Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin, translated into Old Norse and performed by Erik was now playing over the loudspeakers. Vincent walked back to Erik almost in a fit of laughter. "How the hell can you get away with citing lyrics from Led Zeppelin in a speech?" "It's what I was talking to you about, Erik, charisma and confidence." Erik shook his head and chuckled. *** Two days later, a letter was sent to every nation of the world. Nations of the World, Greetings from Buslungsheim, the capital of what will soon be a great nation. Our new republic, Austervania, has now become independent from the Hanseatic Commonwealth. Our nation recognizes the highly Varangian majority in the nation, and because of this the official language of the nation will be Old Norse, with the Futhark runes being used in official signatures and documents. Our government will be much like the Norman government, as one of our leaders is the former King of Normandie. Our executive branch is a liason between the people each of us represent and the government: the Harbær and the Nedarbær. The two before mentioned houses will be the high house and the lower house, respectively. The Harbær will function as a high priority parliament, residing over major national issues such as policies, government positions, and wars. The Nedarbær will reside over budgets, national projects, and supreme court cases. While the Harbær is set to 10 members each, the Nedarbær will be based on population, with 1 member for every 200,000 people. The usage of Runes and the dead language of Old Norse is something we find interesting, how do you plan to introduce these things to the populace in an effective manner? The usage of Runes and the dead language of Old Norse is something we find interesting, how do you plan to introduce these things to the populace in an effective manner? The people of this land already speak a variant of Old Norse that is close to the original, but with some Russian words and accents.
