-Election Results

The Vaule Electoral Commission has verified the election results in last night’s historic poll. The VFP won the legislature and the Presidency with a major landslide not seen in the entire history of modern Vaule. In the Legislature the VFP demolished the Socialist and Nationalist parties to win 468 of the 600 seats in the Parliament (more than 78%). The Socialist Party, that previously held a commanding majority, has been reduced to only 9 seats (1.5%) while the Communist party has increased its influence in Parliament to 108 (18%) seats. The Nationalist party, reeling from corruption allegations as well as from the actions of former VDR officials only managed to hold onto four of their seats in Parliament. This morning the leaders of the Socialist, Nationalist and Democratic parties admitted defeat, but resolved to begin negotiations to form a coalition with the Communist party to create a more effective opposition bloc.

With his victory secured, President Karolekov began the process of appointing his new government. At this time the President has appointed only the Foreign, Defense and Technology Ministers. In a departure from usual procedure, President Karolekov has asked Lt. Vladimir Kharkov (of the Socialist Party) to continue as Vaule’s Foreign Minister. The President praised Lt. Kharkov’s record in foreign affairs, and highlighted his qualifications both as a skilled diplomat and negotiator. The position of Defense Minister will be filled by Lt. General Une, and the post of Technology Minister has been given to the mysterious scientist known as “Washu”.

A spokesperson for President Karolekov has suggested that the President will appoint all other government officials tomorrow morning. The spokesperson has also suggested that the President intends to appoint an Attorney General from outside of the VFP. This has fueled speculation that renowned Constitutional lawyer and former President Yuri Rokossovsky (Socialist party) is being considered for the position.

President Karolekov has announced that he will be holding a press conference tomorrow to address any questions and concerns that the local and international press may have.

"We congratulate the VFP on their victory and look forward to working with them, sharing very similar Meritocratic ideologies, we don't think this will be very difficult at all." The Chairman raised a glass of Zinfandel to the press corps. "A toast to your victory and a more stable Asia." he then took a sip and the broadcast ended.

Government of the VSR:

President: Treize Karolekov

Minister of Technology: Dr. Washu

Minister of Education: Dr. Li Bayar

Minister of Defense: Lt. General Une

Minister of Foreign Affairs: Lt. Kharkov

Minister of Social Services: Mikhail Voronin

Minister of Transport: Boris Nyazov

Attorney General: Yuri Rokossovsky

Prime Minister: =vacant=

Wasting no time, President Karolekov has filled all Cabinet level posts and has instructed his government to begin reforms without delay. This new government incorporates members from outside of the VFP, including a member of the Socialist party (Yuri Rokossovsky) serving as Attorney General, and Dr. Li Bayar a native of Buryat province who has been involved in the education system for some time. The position of Prime Minister will remain vacant until Parliament convenes next week and selects the Prime Minister. The President has floated the possibility of not appointing a Prime Minister and abolishing the office entirely.

The new government also reflects a major reduction in the number of Ministers in the government (from 12 to 6). Several similar Ministries were merged together to reduce bureaucracy and government waste. In another move, the President has announced that Lt. General Une will serve as both Defense Minister and Chief of the Armed Forces. Less than an hour after taking office, President Karolekov fired 8,235 civil servants who were “completely unnecessary and who received significant pay for doing very little”. Several other reforms are expected to be brought before the Parliament shortly.

President Karolekov has made himself available to the press this afternoon, in his first press conference since becoming President. Local and International press have been invited to submit their questions to the President at the conference. President Karolekov is expected to readjust Vaule’s diplomatic standing after a meeting with the Vaule Diplomatic Corps. The President is also expected to reinstate Vaule's Senate with new electoral rules. The new Senate will consist of 10 directly elected members, 10 appointed by the President and 10 "Expert" members. The Expert members will be selected from the most qualified person in that particular field and the Presidential appointments shall be only merit based and non-partisan.
