Kevin McDonald
First off, apologies for posting a thread based on an article, and asking you to read said article. I know these threads are probably frowned upon on the OWF, and usually belong in the water cooler, but I thought because of the content it could go on the OWF, as it has to do with us the "players behind the characters." Mods, please move if you feel I am wrong in my placement. This article from CNN details some companies that offer online wills. It is a company that will, after verifying you have died, send your online account information (be it games, bank accounts, ebay, etc.) to an executor who will do as you wished with them. It got me thinking. I assume most of us play more than one online game or at the very least do some kind of online banking/trading/shopping, etc. Would you want someone to log in and collect for you after you have passed (I am unclear as to whether or not this would violate the rules) or would you be embarrased if someone found out how much of your life you devoted to this game - even after you died? Machiabelly
I would not be embarassed, but no I would not want anyone to log in. I hope....fervently hope...that there are better memorials to my life then my online nation. I would hope my wife would pop on here and let everyone know why I wasn't here, but that would be it. bzelger
I plan to live forever. Or die trying? @ the OP: no. I can die IC without a fuss, whatever the reasons. No reason to complicate anything for anyone. Edited May 18, 2009 by bzelger
BringMeTheHorizon
If i assassinate myself, i will not have people execute any actions on my behalf of said nation, account.
Duncan King
No, but I would like someone to log in here, on Zenith, and on a couple other forums I frequent to say goodbye.
nexangelus
I think that's kindaaaa the point in memorial nations.
Kevin McDonald
So Machiabelly and DK and the rest who will express similar sentiments, how would you go about ensuring people did log in to say goodbye for you? Would you use a service as outlined in the article, or would you just tell someone in person or write it into a regular will? I have a similar sentiment, I wouldn't want anyone to continue playing the game, but I would take steps to ensure that my community was notified. Commisar Gaunt
There are services that send out emails if you don't log into them for a certain amount of time--a dead man's switch if you will. You can have it email out important information and messages etc, and it's an excellent way to inform people of what they should do in case you pass away. In that case, you could easily set it up to email your account login and password to someone you trust and instructions to say goodbye to your internet friends. Timeline
If i pass away, i would like someone to carry out my final act, then my nation can be removed or what ever. how ever my life will be based on what i did with my family not some online game

King DrunkWino
No, and I'd rather not even have anybody I know posting goodbye's either. I'd rather just be a mostly pleasant memory that fades away.
Chief Savage Man
To be honest, I could drop dead tomorrow and none of you would ever know about it.
Raphael Beau Pre
Consider this my preemptive middle finger from the grave to you all, because you're not going to know. I, for one, am disappointed that we shall not be notified of the passing of ES. However, I suppose your absence from the forums would suggest that something was amiss. Personally I would not want anyone carrying on as me in any of the games I play online, it wouldn't be the same with someone else playing my nation/character/whatever. I feel that if I'm worth remembering I'll be remembered without my account being active, if I'm not worth it, my account being there won't change much. I don't think I'd specifically feel the need for a whole "community" to know about my death, there are a few friends online I would like to be told, but they could easily be contacted on sites such as facebook/myspace/etc, rather than involvment in the game I knew them from. Kevin McDonald
Why would I care about my nation if I was dead? Not so much your nation, more the community you have built for yourself.
Machiabelly
As far as letting people know, I guess it depends on whether or not it is just me that dies. My wife and i know which forums we frequent and would drop a message. If we both happened to die, like in an accident, then I doubt anyone would know, although I have on RL acquaintance on here he might think to do it. mykep
I love you all, but when I die I think my CN account is the last thing I'd put on a will. Magic cards have to be traded out. Super Edit: I hope I have to face this ungoldy demon who is about to destroy the world. I hope music is playing in the background. I will look back and say to the crowd of heroes behind me and say, "don't forget to log on to my CN account." Then at that moment I will charge at the demon with the sword of destiny. Taget
I plan to live forever. That's a bit too ambitious unfortunately. But would it be too much to ask to have an opportunity to re-roll and hopefully get better resources?
