End of the War

The end of what was known as the Maghreb War has formally come to an end. Sparse guerilla groups remain active in rural Saharan areas, but the great majority of the League of Libyan Armies has been defeated, $@! they officially surrendered and laid down their arms.

At his time, with the help of Rebel Army aid, reconstruction has begun. The two major cities of the conflict, Al Jawf and Sabha are getting a lot of attention while modernization has begun of the remainder of the nation by the hands of the United Maghreb Army.

First United Political Actions

The first of united political actions took place today as candidates began announcing intents to run for the presidency and prime ministership.

Running for the position of President are:

Mr. Samir Nahas

Mr. Radi Mifsud

Running for the position of Prime Minister are:

Ms. Raja Hajjar

Mr. Rashad Bata

Elections will be held at a later date. Between now and then, candidates are espected to expand on their intentions and platforms. The election seems to be a popular and unifying move, especially since General Kalifa proclaimed "I am stepping down as general of the UMA and will not be running for office so that there may be no call of bias upon this government and so that there may be no animosity bred between the government and the populace."

Benghazi, The Maghreb

Today, all final candidates announced their platforms and intentions upon taking office. Two main parties have emerged, one being the slightly more liberal of parties, the other more conservative. The more liberal of the two parties, named the Mahgreb Unity Party is the party of presidential nominee Radi Mifsud and prime ministerial nominee Rashad Bata.

The conservative party, named the Maghreb Republican Party, supports the nominees of president and prime minister Samir Nahas and Raja Hajjar respectively. The following is an outline of each party's plan.

The Maghreb Unity Party

Would like to move towards a more social democracy, but by no means socialism. Support welfare, social security, universal healthcare and other things of that nature. The Unity Party would like to move for a foreign policy of seeking strong ties with other African and Mediteranean nations.

The Maghreb Republican Party

Would like to take a conservative path towards internal affairs. They do not support social programs on one hand, but on the other are not opposed. Their foreign policy plan is to move towards neutrality when it comes to blocs, opting only to sign non-aggression treaties and trade agreements.

Benghazi, The Mahgreb

Today, new president Samir Nahas made an important announcement.

"The political climate in this world is as turbulent as ever. The world is caught in a cold war, and we are in the middle, an unalighned nation watching and hoping for the best. We have convened with the Senate and after a lengthy debate we have decided to pursue a course of permanent and total neutrality. This does not mean we will not make treaties, simply that we will not bind ourselves militarily to another state. We will endeavor to expand our trade through trade agreements and protect our stability with non-aggression pacts. The world has their problems, we have ours. It is not a necessity to mix them."

And so it was, The Maghreb was a permanently neutral nation.

Benghazi, The Maghreb

Today, the Senate passed its definitions on gun rights in The Maghreb, which was signed off into law by President Nahas. These definitions were also passed as the 1st Amendment to the Constitution and covered many aspects of firearms, their sale and their restrictions. The changes are as follows:

1) Sales

-Firearms can only be sold by a dealer who has bought a government license, which can only be obtained through a government sanctioned inspection process.

-Firearms cannot be sold to anyone under 18 years of age, handguns specifically cannot be sold to anyone under 21 years of age.

-Any person who has been convicted of a felony may not purchase firearms.

-Ammunition of any kind may not be sold to anyone under 18 years of age.

2) Classification of Firearms

-Shotguns will be defined as any weapon utilizing a long, unrifled barrel meant for firing shotshells. Shotguns can be used to fire slugs and may be either automatic, semi-automatic or pump-action.

-Rifles are defined as any weapon utilizing a long, rifled barrel that does not require muzzle loading, and utilizes cartridge rounds. Rifles may be either automatic, semi-automatic, bolt-action or lever-action.

-Muzzle loaders are defined as any rifle that must be loaded from the barrel. They are only able to be single shot.

-Crossbows are defined as a firearm as their mode of fire and destructive capability are on par with a firearm rather than a bow. A crossbow is defined as any weapon that fires as a bow, but utilizes a trigger mechanism. Crossbows may be either single shot or semi-automatic.

-Handguns are defined as a pistol or revolver, a firearm with a short barrel and small size. Pistols may be either automatic, semi-automatic or lever-action.

3) Restrictions

-To be able to purchase automatic firearms, a person must qualify for and purchase a license permitting them to do so. The basic requirements for such a license are: 21 years of age or higher, the person must not have been convicted of a felony, and the person must have owned a semi-automatic firearm for 3 years before.

-The sale of automatic weapons requires an upgrade of the traditional dealership license.

-Weapons may not be carried within city limits without gaining a conceal and carry license, the basic requirement of which is being 21 years of age and never have been convicted of a felony.

-Assault rifles require a similar but different license to own and deal.

-No weapon sold to a citizen can fire a bullet larger than a .50 caliber round.

-Should a military veteran wish to buy a personal firearm that fires a larger round than a .50 caliber round, they may apply for a special permit.

-No person, military veteran or otherwise, can purchase a weapon classified over a personal firearm.

[A personal firearm is defined as any weapon that is held and supported completely by the user's arms and fires a solid projectile. Shoulder mounted weapons do not classify as personal firearms.]

The Saharan

In this issue of The Saharan, we are highlighting several businesses leading The Maghreb's fastest growing industries.

First is United Steel. This corporation is responsible for 60% of steel manufacture, domestic sale of steel and 67% of steel exports. Their corporate headquarters is in Benghazi, but many of their steel mills are in and around Sabha, affectionately known throughout the country as 'The Steel City.' United Steel also produces many steel products and has business agreements with the suppliers of The Maghreb's air forces. The smaller company of Phoenix Iron and Steel controls rights to the suppliers of the ground forces. However, United Steel still controls large markets in consumer suppliers, specifically rights to supply steel to the number one ship building, importing and exporting company North Shore.

Second is Oasis, a consumer chain that has found a growing niche in the strengthening economy: the affluent. Oasis sells only what would be labelled as 'affluent materials.' While anything that can be found in Oasis can be found within other consumer chains, the quality, and price, are what sets it apart. You can find desks, televisions, computers, etc. at a number of different locations. However, Oasis dominates the 'wealthy' target market, bringing the latest and most high quality goods from around the world to The Maghreb's domestic market.

Third is North Shore. This company is widely considered to be the largest and most profitable business in all The Maghreb. With the nation's rapidly growing economy, North Shore strategically placed itself to become a virtual monopoly in the exporting and importing business. 85% of all exports leave through North Shore ports, most of which are situated in surprisingly small towns. This means that these small 'port towns' are largely employed by North Shore itself, save for essential positions like grocery store owners, postmen, gas station employees, etc. Also, 71% of all imports are received through North Shore ports.

The second edge to the North Shore sword is their ship building business. Utilizing steel and other metals from United Steel, North Shore cuts out any middle men, not only building its own ships, but also ships for other import/export companies, patrol boats for the government and it is rumored that they will be contracted to build naval ships if the government decides to construct a navy, which is rumored to be 'relatively soon.'

Our fourth company is Traverse Oil and Mining. This fuel behemoth struck it rich through a freak coincidence. Traverse Mining had been a power in the gold and gem mining business in the Algerian Traverse even before the formation of The Maghreb. On one certain dig after unification, Traverse Mining accidentally struck oil, thereby finding the first domestic oil well within The Maghreb. Traverse Mining quickly capitalized, expanding into Traverse Oil and Mining, effectively doubling their administrative employees and adding hundreds of 'grunt' workers. Using research gathered starting as far back as 200 years ago, Traverse's Oil wing was able to locate 5 other oil wells. However, due to anti-monopoly laws within The Maghreb, Traverse Oil was forced to sell one of its oil wells. Still, they remain the most dominant power in both the mining and fuel businesses. Traverse Oil and Mining is rumored to be switching names yet again to Traverse Energy and Mining, as they have received a government contract to build facilities and staff experiments, alongside government scientists, to experiment with alternative energy solutions, including ethanol, hydrogen, solar and wind energy, and nuclear power.

The fifth and final mega-corp is Al-Bakr Technology. This firm specializes in the manufacture and sale of computer hardware and software, and has the government contract for producing new avionics systems, as well as other technological systems for the military, including radar systems, targetting systems, etc. While we may have the least to report about them, they have one of the broadest product lines, the biggest of which is acting as a wholesaler for top of the line technological hardware parts. This means they manufacture and sell parts for high tech televisions, computers and cell phones to other companies who manufacture the actual items themselves.

These are the 5 largest companies in The Maghreb that are leading the charge to absolute prosperity and are supporting our economic boom.

Al Bayda, The Maghreb

Today, construction was completed on The Maghreb's first shipyard, based in Al Bayda. The shipyard will be the place of construction for The Maghreb's navy, which will be recognized as an official branch of the United Maghreb Armed Forces once the first ship is christened. Word has not yet come down on what this first ship will be, but the citizens of the city and indeed the nation eagerly await its first sale.

Al Bayda, The Maghreb

The first ship set sail out of the Al Bayda Shipyard, what is being labelled as a 'revolutionary new direction in Maghreb nautical engineering.' Indeed the rumors were true, as North Shore was contracted to build and co-design The Maghreb's naval ships along with military nautical engineers.

The submarine, named the SSN-Leviathan is a nuclear powered attack submarine and will be the first of several that will patrol the territorial waters of The Maghreb to help cut back on drug trafficking and other illegal activities, as well as provide one of the first lines of defense against any invasion, not that there is expected to be one.
