Putting up new videos, old videos, VERY old videos, and making sure there is plenty of candy and popcorn in front of the cashier desk. He doesn’t make much of a living, but he likes to show up early, and stay late to watch free movies. He was only allowed to watch, movies from the “VERY Old” section, but he enjoyed them. He watched horrors, comedies, and his favorite where documentaries. Watching accused madmen make their bid for world conquest, militant nationalists parading down long streets, powerful men bringing a small, weak nation to greatness and attempted world domination, and massive crowds promising their lives and allegiance to a beloved leader. These were the movies that fascinated Charlie, who often practiced his own speeches during his alone time (he had a lot of alone time). He dropped out of school years earlier, and had never mastered the German tongue, but he had made it this far. As not so far as he has gotten… ****************** The President of Tomania speaks to the nation above a balcony. “We will decomission a large portion of our overly strong military,and divert the man-power and funding towards great infrastructural achievements and advances. The beauty of this country will be renowned through out the world, and our vision will b….” The speech is cut short by a violent blast. The President drops from the balcony, dead. The crowd releases a loud scream as they retreat away from the dead president’s body. At the same time within a meeting room within the Capital building.. “General Valkun Chaplin, the stage is set now. The President has been eliminated, and in the national shock, you will take the reigns of this nation, and we will be your aids.” “Perfect. A new age dawns upon our nation now. Soon all power will be consolidated into our hands, and the nation will rise beyond all current bounds.” “The people know you are a war hero. You’re a beloved star in their eyes, and they will more than happily give you command over them. Now, we must make our move. By now the President’s body is still alone in front of the balcony. Now we will announce our next leader. Now will be the age of order, progress, and power. Let us depart, for your surprise appearance, and offer to the nation.” “Yes, I will drive myself and make my appearance after the crowd swells to a large number.” ******************************** Charlie Chaplin’s normal duties are put on hold as the screams heard outside just minutes earlier now turn to cheers. He is curious to see what is going on, but he is in the back room trying on a costume. He has squared his mustache, and has just finished putting on his fake military uniform. Weighing the choices for a moment, he dashes outside before he misses any more action. He thinks he might as well finish the costume off with a General’s cap, placing it own quickly as he throws his baseball cap in the air. ******************************* En route to the square, General Valkun Chaplin is now speeding. Nearing the square he sees a strange object glide towards his car. A baseball cap slips narrowly through his window and onto his face. The car swerves out of control, left and right. Then as he removes the cap he sees he is about to drive right into the ocean. He attempts to jump out of his car, but fails to remove his seatbelt. The General dies, and no one even knows. ... "And so, even as we mourn the death of our beloved President, we can rise again from the ashes of distraught. It is stated as an honest fact that with the Presidence death so to will the democratic party die, with no clear leadership, and internal bickering. As your government, we offer you a new, strong leader to guide you through this turmoil, as I myself decline to take office inthe former President's place. General Valkun Chaplin has been asked to take see our nation through with his wisdom, strength, and national love to lead us out of this distress and into a brighter era." ********************** The crowd cheers louder now. Charlie makes it outside, catching the attention of one man, who stares at him in astonishment. The man says, "It..Its him! Its the General!!"The crowd lets out a load roar, that Charlie thaught would shatter the windows of the shops within the square. He had never realised his close resemblance to the General, while he did notice they had the same last name, anyways the last thing he needed was to be stuck cleaning up glass from the video store all week. Then the crowd closes in on him, pushing and shoving until Charlie finds himself at the foot of a large stage, where the Vice President has been giving a speech. The Vice President leans to speak to Charlie, "General Chaplin?" Charlie looks at the Vice President baffled that he knew his last name and replied, "Umm..y-yes, thats my name." The Vice President answers, "I like what your doing with your mustache, now get up here and give these people a speach. This is the last step on your climb to power." The Vice President helps Charlie onto the stage and backs away. Now, Charlie finds himself alone infront of a podium, and facing large crowd. He was left a small notecard, identifying some important figures of the Nationalist Party who where sitting around the stage. Joke flags where folded in some boxes off stage, from a play that had used the stage earlier. Charlie, now drunk with the cheers of the crowd, throws odd hand salutes to them, similar to the ones he witnessed int he documentaries he watched. He strode confidently over to one of the partymembers and ordered him to string up the flags behind him. Once this was done, he cleared his throat and began to speak.
