The Establishment of the Second Hanseatic Republic

The bodyguards remained outside the Prime Minister's office...

If anyone here had ever seen the man called Baron Uberstein before, they would immediately notice Mr. Anthony Harlem looked exactly like that man, with the exception that his hair was not yet grey, but still black.

As he entered, he looked to see the reaction of the Prime Minister. He'd know right away if she'd ever seen even a likeness of Uberstein by it...

Still, even as he watched carefully, he offered a hand to shake in greeting, and he smiled faintly. He was beginning to get a bit more used to using the expression, though if one looked closely, they'd still see the lines etched into his face from the grief, pain, and loss he had suffered in his own life.

Sarah had still been a young girl when Uberstein was in power, in fact a very young girl and had only remembered his pictures from the history books she was required to read at the university. Harlem had a resemblance yes, but not one that she could put together extremely quick from the grainy pages of Feinstein's History of Europe. She smiled as he walked into the room and took his hand in hers gently. "Mr. Harlem, it is a pleasure to meet you. I have a letter here from your head of state and I'm anxious to hear anything that Promised Land has to say in regarding my country." She sat down. "Please, sit and can I get you anything to drink?"

After shaking hands, he took the offered seat. "Thank you. As a matter of fact...if you have any whiskey, maybe a shot of that. I need something to calm my nerves after what I've been going through the past few days."

"I do." Sarah smiled and reached into her desk. Pulling out a bottle of Irish Whiskey that a Taeunasian commander had left her with after the first nuclear crisis in the Hansa and with it two glasses. "I've learned to always keep a supply of alcohol on hand, especially for stress." Sarah said pouring the whiskey into the glasses. "I've heard that Promised Land is coming out of their crisis as of late. It is a pleasure to see that, the entire situation must have been extremely hard on everyone in the country." She handed Harlem the glass and took a quick swig from her own and chuckled. "The age is perfect."

Private Message to Lady Sarah Tintagyl

The Federacion Iberiana wishes to extend its best wishes to you and to Hansa as you reestablish your nation in a new territory. While the fires of Europe rage to our northeast, the Federacion hopes to remain in place, albeit several meters below our former homes. You said it best in your address to your people: Though it may be cliche to say so, these are trying times. We feel confident that you have chosen the best path for your people, and we pray for the grace to do so in our own case.

Signed,

Juan Esparrago

President

Taking a quick swallow, he nodded. "Just right," he agreed, taking another swallow.

"Yes, our re-construction is nearly complete. Power grids are replaced, civilian structures such as apartments and private homes are re-built or repaired, and in many cases, all that is needed is for the would-be occupants to design the interior of their homes how they see fit. As for the military...those losses are nearly replaced, too."

He smiled again, as he looked off into the distance at something only he could see. "Yes, the whole thing was hard on everyone, but President Jackson is a good public face, good at inspiring even people who have lost everything." He gazed into the bottom of the glass. "People like me," he muttered quietly, quickly downing what was left in the glass.

Her eyes dropped. "I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Harlem, times have been hard on the world as of late." Realizing that she didn't want to make the man feel anymore uncomfortable about the situation in his country Sarah reached for a sheet of paper and a pen. "So I must ask, I am unsure as the main reasons of your visit here besides maybe a check up on how things are going. Is there anything in particular that you wanted to discuss?"

He blinked, coming out of his musing. "Actually, that was mainly why I came, to check on progress here, and to see if there was anything else my government could do to help you."

'And to see in person what sort of leader you are,' he thought to himself, but not speaking that part aloud.

Sarah smiled and placed her glass beside her. "Well progress is going just fine, but I would hate for you to have come all this way for me to just tell you that Mr. Harlem." Pushing her chair out of the way Sarah rose and looked out the window. "If you would be up for it, I'd be more than happy to give you a tour of the capital at least and maybe if we have enough time in the day a tour of the countryside. The Hansa in Europe wasn't that large, nor is the one in Australia." She laughed. "Its still early in the morning, we could finish Brisbane by the afternoon and have a countryside marathon by nightfall. Please, sir, it would be my honor."

"Not at all Mr. Harlem, I can take the necessary time to show you at least the capital and surrounding areas. Plus this will be good for my health, I've been trapped inside this office all week and even with the windows opened, its still not the same as being outside. Please, the Botanical Gardens are only a small distance from here, plus the sun is shinning and there's not a cloud in the sky and on the way I will explain in the fullest detail what my hopes and dreams are for what the Hanseatic Republic will become in the future. Talking to you about them might also help some other ideas come up as well." She walked to the door, opened it and smiled back her guest still sitting in his seat. "So, shall we go on promenade Mr. Harlem?"

After considering what she said, he nodded. "OK." He got up and followed her. His guards would fall into step behind them once they were on their way.

"It's been a while since I've just been able to relax and enjoy the sights. Maybe that's what I need," he ackowledged as he stepped through the door.

Leading Anthony out of the stuffy Hall he and Sarah descended onto the city streets of Brisbane on what felt to be a beautiful Spring day. Crossing the first set of streets they strolled out past the Financial and political center of Brisbane and entered the area around the Botanical Gardens which had been transformed into the cultural center of the city. "Honestly Mr. Harlem, one of my main concerns as a leader has always been the strengthening of a nation's cultural and diplomatic ties to the world. I will admit I did declare war on Germany and it went against many of my philosophies as a pacifist, but the dedication to my friends diplomatically is just as strong." She sighed for a moment remembering Finland, but escorting a guest Sarah made sure to stay in a bright mood, for her and Mr. Harlem's sake. "Back in Europe, the Hansa had been called one of the diplomatic centers of the world and I want to try and create the same type of society here as well. The cultural district is an embodiment of those dreams Mr. Harlem."

Passing an art gallery going under renovation, Sarah stopped and stared at the building. "I want to bring in foreign artists, writers, musicians, diplomats and build a society based around humanism Mr. Harlem. Already I think it has become clear that in dark situations we find ourselves in the boundaries of nations seem to fade and we look at each other as brothers and sisters and that is something that I want to proclaim more to the world. One of the first laws that was enacted in my government was the creation of a Humanitarian aid fund, ten percent of the budget would be set aside for either foreign or national aid depending on the situation and if the world would be at peace then we put the money to building a strong public works system and building up the arts."

As they left the cultural district the two crossed the street leading into the Botanical Gardens and the shade under the trees. "Humanism is not a new philosophy Mr. Harlem, if fact it is old as the world itself, but we seem to forget that." She paused and took a deep breath. "Beautiful weather you Australians have. I wish I would have taken a vacation down here long ago. I was able to visit the beach a week ago, nothing felt as relaxing."

Upon first descending outside to the city streets, he took a breath of frsh air, and let the sun warm his face, but not pausing long enough to fall behind the Prime Minister. He nodded in agreement, and perhaps sympathy, as he listened to her reasoning behind the DoW on Germany, and her hopes for the Hansa to become a center of diplomacy and culteral diversity once again. He knew there would be a number of individuals who would leap at the chance to exhibit their artistic talents in this new nation, expecially now that their minds would be turning away from the re-construction that was now nearly completed.

Finally, as she seemed to be finished speaking for the moment, he spoke once more. "I wouldn't know...I've never been to the beach myself. I always meant to take my family there with me at least once, but something always came up." A shadow passed over his face as he mentioned his family, but just as quickly, it disappeared behind a facade of cheerfulness.

"I admire your dream, Miss Tintagyl. I can almost see it in my mind. Now I can understand why your people continue to follow you, even through the fires of nuclear hell itself. With such charisma and a clear goal, it must take a truly cold heart of stone to resist your dreams."

Sarah smiled at her guest and laughed. "I've been given enough compliments in my leadership to last a lifetime Mr. Harlem. But it helps reaffirm that what I am doing is actually beneficial to the world. Reports have been coming into my office of nuclear treaties and I hope that they are completed, but there is no point for non-nuclear nations to sign these treaties, it is the responsibility of the powerful to protect the world, but it is the responsibility of everyone to protect the individuals from destruction. Many have told me that they are the dreams of a naive young woman, but I try to think differently." She continued leading them to the center of the gardens. "Though I have hopes to modernizing the Hansa further than just culture. Now that we are part of the Australasian Coalition I want to be able to provide something to your countries that could aid in anyways. Already we've begun delving into creating a true Hanseatic navy and air force, as well as a merchant marine. Believe me, Mr. Harlem, I am a pacifist through and through, but war occurs and if war comes to Australia, I promise to defend our new home to the best of my ability."

"Believe me, I do not doubt your word, after seeing your resolve in Europe," he assured her as they continued through the gardens. "If there is anything we can do to help you create a true military force, just let me know. I have friends in high places, if you take my meaning..."

He paused for a moment, considering what she had said about her dreams. "No, your dreams are not those of a naive young woman, but an idealist. You see the world not just as it is, but how it should be. The world could use more people like you, like the Dalai Lama of Tibet, may whatever deity is listening be with him wherever he is now. He was also a great advocate for peace."

OOC: For clarification, I'm referring not to a RL person, but an RP'er who went inactive. His lands were annexed by Triyun.

"Every leader should strive for peace Mr. Harlem and I wish that I would have been able to meet his Holiness, I studied him briefly in my World History courses and I would like to think that the influences of great men such as him have help me define my own philosophies. But as for Promised Land's help in modernization we would be extremely thankful for any aid or advice in building our forces."

The garden pathways led down to the Brisbane River and they paused looking over the city. "The moving in process went quicker than I imagined it would and my people are getting along extremely well with the New Cymreag, even now we have more building projects being done outside the city as well. I do not like to consider myself a socialist, but it has always been my philosophy that the state should provide for its citizens any duty that they require, after all they most are all loyal citizens. One day Mr. Harlem Brisbane will be one of the cultural centers of the world and I hope that you and I will be around to see that day, nothing impresses a leader more than when their accomplishments will exist long after their death. Immortality is a way of measuring such success and though I don't desire my own personal immortality, the eternal existence of the Hanseatic State is much more important to me." She sighed looking at the bright sun beginning to fade behind the city skyline.

"Mr. Harlem, I don't believe there is much left in Brisbane that would be of great interest to you, but by all means I can request a vehicle if you would like to tour the countryside, but I don't want to keep you." Sarah smiled as the first stars began to form from out of the red sky.

He finally smiled a true, genuine smile, the first such expression he'd been able to muster in a long time, as he looked over the magnificent view of a city from above at dusk. "I don't really have any pressing business elsewhere."

As he turned to continue with her, he remembered something.

"Oh, and before I forget, if there are any of your citizens still in Europe who wish to join you here, we'd be happy to help evacuate them. We are finally capable of doing so, with our airports working again."

If Sarah was thinking clearly, she might wonder how he knew so much about the running of his nation, from civilian infrastructure to military construction, as supoposedly, he was a simple member of the diplomatic corps. She would be right to wonder, considering who this man really was...

"Of course then and we would be more than willing to accept such aid." Sarah smiled, as she lead the way over to a wooden bench overlooking Brisbane. "First, Mr. Harlem, please, call me Sarah as I can see this becoming a genuine friendship. But I must ask you, those friends you know in high places, how do you know them. To be honest Mr. Harlem, diplomat such as yourself seems to have an extreme amount of access to the levels of your government and to make such promises. Mind you I mean no offense, but I've never met a man in your position that has the ability to promise such things as military modernization and aid as freely. Please, let us talk on a much more personal level, you've seemed to have a lot on your mind since you arrived."

OOC: Excellent, I see you took the offer...

IC: He sat on the bench, the smile remaining in place even as he carefully considered what he could safely tell her. Finally he settled on a sort of half-truth. "Okay..." he said, looking around carefully to make sure there were no prying eyes or ears to overhear this. He gestured for her to move closer so he could speak quietly.

"I'm one of the few who know Subtleknifewielder. Not his public face, but the man behind the mask." There, he'd said it. It wasn't a lie, per se, but neither was it the whole truth. His face was perfectly serious when he told her, indicating he was not, in any way, joking, nor was he the slightest bit insane.

"I've never had the chance to meet the man either, but he is one of the few leaders that never seems talked about, truly a mystery to me and most likely the rest of the world I would assume. Mr. Harlem, I would assume, for you to know him you must yourself command quite a deal of power." Sarah looked down at the ground for a moment. "I don't mean to pry, but you aren't a simple diplomat are you? You're much more than a diplomat aren't you."

Another smile, this one mysterious. "Very perceptive. Yes, I am more than a diplomat, but I am not at libnerty to tell you how much more. But as for how I know him...we've known each other since we were children. We've never withheld anything from each other, and even during his rise to power, no secrets were kept between us."

Mr. Harlem, if it would be possible then, I would be quite honored to actually meet your head of state in person. Perhaps, you, him, and I could share the same dream of bringing peace and stability to the world as a whole. Again, I do not wish to impose, but I think that given the circumstances of the world is in at present, stability could be helped by the men and women that care about it the most."
