Assassination (attempt) in Pretoria

The embassy was quite crowded with the addition of nearly 300 more men that needed to be housed (temporarily at least), fed and accounted for. One of the captains, the ambassador forgot which, was trying to organize the troops into a semblence of order while arguing with the major commanding the normal embassy garrison who seemed to think he was in command (technically he was, due to his rank). The ambassador was busy working in his office, preparing to deal with the certainly angry military of Transvaal.

Looking out his office window, O'Grianna noticed a small convoy of troop transports and other military equipment pull up to the front of the embassy. Almost instantly, his door opened and an aide reported that the gate guard had just reported a the Field Marshal was back...with reinforcements. The ambassador stood up and ordered the gate guard to let the Field Marshal and no more than two other people into the embassy before walking down the stairs to meet him in the front entrance hall. Additionally, he ordered everybody out of the front part of the building except for the normal guards.

The ambassador stood up and ordered the gate guard to let the Field Marshal and no more than two other people into the embassy

Field Marshal Paul Cruywagen and Admiral Rudolf Kruger stepped away from the dozen or so tanks which had accompanied them to the Tahoe Embassy. The two men walked up to the front gate and saluted the guards.

As he watched the two make their way up towards the main entrance, Ambassador Ó Grianna could see from his office window that more reinforcements and tanks were taking up positions along the surrounding streets. Just then one of his aides poked his head through the doorway to the ambassador’s office.

“Excuse me sir, but I have received word that Mr. Strijdom and the colonel are now safe and away. They are just now passing over the Namibian coastline and heading out over the South Atlantic. They should be outside Transvaler airspace momentarily.”

The aide then added with a smile of pround satisfaction: “No one at the airport even questioned them. Our aircrew landed, refueled, and took off again with lightning speed and precision!”

“Go raibh maith agat, thank you…” said the Ambassador quietly, his attention was now focused on the guardhouse below. He unlatched the window and slid it open slightly ajar, enough so he could listen in.

“We would like to meet with the Ambassador” said the graven-visaged Marshal in his deep voice. He then looked up at the ambassador whom he spotted standing in the window.

Even the more affable admiral appeared to be more subdued now, somewhat distracted as if he was still registering all the recent events in the past few hours and trying to make sense of it all.

A guard escorted the Field Marshal and Admiral into the embassy and up the stairs into the ambassadors office. Once the two men were in the office, the guard closed the door behind them.

"Failte isteach Marascal Machaire Cruywagen, Aimiréal Kruger. Welcome again to our embassy. I know why you are here. The former Prime Minister is out of Transvaler airspace over the South Atlantic, no we will not hand him over, yes he will remain loyal to Transvaal and do nothing to undermine the government and yes, I and my government are more than willing to continue to working with you. Now, how may I help you."

The two men both had a stunned expression on their faces. An uneasy tension of silence settled between the Transvaler military commanders and the Tahoan ambassador.

Admiral Kruger was the first to speak, flabbergasted he asked “well… uhh, when is the prime minister going to return to Transvaal?” Before the ambassador could answer, Cruywagen interrupted. “Are you holding him hostage?”

Neither men could believe that Strijdom had slipped out of their grasp so easily.

Meanwhile, somewhere over the Atlantic, Hendrik Strijdom woke up from his nap. He must have dozed off unknowingly, likely a result of fatigue catching up to him after the recent events which seemed like an eternity.

One of the flight stewards brought him some hot tea. “Dankie” he responded eagerly, ‘it was actually nice to take in the peace and quiet of the flight’ Strijdom thought to himself.

After he drank down the tea, Strijdom called for the steward. “Excuse me, is there an air-to-land phone which I may use? I would like to update myself on the situation back home.”

“Of course sir, here I shall take you there” the steward replied as he assisted Strijdom into his wheelchair. He took him to the back of the plane were a small private booth was located.

A few minutes later, Colonel Van Haesten, who was sitting a couple of rows in front, noticed that Strijdom wasn’t at his seat. After tracking down the air steward, Van Haesten caught up with Strijdom just as he hung up the phone receiver. Strijdom has a worried expression.

“Not good news…” he said to the Colonel. “It seems the Ministry of Finance has been doing its home work after all. I just spoke with Minister Hofmeyr and he has found some new trading partners. Looks like the economy will right itself out after a couple of days of adjustment.”

“Also, apparently no one in the federal government knows yet that I have left. Hofmeyr thought I was still at the hospital. I didn’t correct him” he laughed. “I wonder how long before any one figure it out?”

“Come Colonel, give me the pleasure to buy you a drink. After the past few days, what we have been through together, it is the very least I can do to repay you…”

The Ambassador laughed out loud before replying. "No, no, no, he asked for and was granted political assylum in the Tahoe Republic for fear of persecution."

The field marshal and admiral both looked confused at what the ambassador had just told them. “So... let me get this straight... Strijdom has left the country and sought asylum in Tahoe?” said Cruywagen out loud to no one in particular.

“Well does that mean he is or he isn’t still the prime minister?” asked Admiral Kruger.

“Unless he actually resigned in writing, I’m not actually sure. Come, admiral, we must meet with the executive cabinet to get them to call a meeting together and figure out what is going on now.”

Just before the two staff officers could leave, the ambassador interrupted them. “Gentlemen, please give the cabinet my regards and inform them that I shall look forward to attending the meeting due to the protocol accorded to myself on account of being the dean of the diplomatic corps. I wouldn’t want to miss this for the world...”

Cruywagen’s face went flush red – but he held his tongue tight.

“Yes, of course Your Respected Excellency...”

"Ah, and I nearly forgot." The Ambassador smiled, "Prime Minister Strijdom's resignation." Handing the envelope to Admiral Kruger, the Ambassador smiled again. "I will see you gentlemen soon."

"This is the captain speaking. We are currently approaching Cuba, where we will land at Havana for refueling. There will be a 30 minute layover during that time where you may stretch your legs on the tarmac. Please take your seats and prepare for landing."

HENDRIK STRIJDOM RESIGNS; J.M. HERTZOG TO BE SWORN IN

CYBERNATIONS NETWORK NEWS [PRETORIA]: The Federal Government announced this evening that Hendrik Strijdom gave notice of his resignation as Prime Minister of the Federal Republic effective immediately.

An emergency meeting of the executive cabinet is expected either tomorrow or Friday to confirm Deputy Prime Minister Jakob M. Hertzog as his replacement until federal elections are held in May.

No reason for his resignation has been given by the Federal Government but numerous rumours indicate that he has left the country and taken up residence in Tahoe.

OOC: The assassins and Van Zyl are/were being held in the barracks housing the Armtha SS troops. Assume they were transfered to the embassy when the SS vacated that barracks?

IC:

The plane touched down at Jose Marti International Airport in the setting sun. Looking out the window, Strijdom could see about seven or eight fighters with Tahoe Air Force markings and a dozen or so helicopters. There were a few small planes and around ten large civilian airliners or military transports. Strijdom noticed the large Tahoan flag flying over the terminal which was covered with scaffolding as workers repaired apparent bomb damage.

As the plane pulled up to the terminal, the pilot returned to intercom, "Welcome to Cuba. The terminal is currently under repair after airstrikes that occured during the invasion of Cuba, so you will have to exit down onto the tarmac, where an area has been secured for pedestrian traffic."

Van Haesten and Strijdom made their way out of the aircraft onto a ramp down onto the tarmac. Van Haesten informed the Prime Minister about various facets of the war: how pirates, supported by the Cuban government had taken hostages and refused to surrender them, how Cuba and the Bahamas was invaded and, "Now they plan on turning Cuba into a colony, I suppose. It's currently under a military occupation. The population is fairly apathetic, which is making occupation easier for us."

OOC: The assassins and Van Zyl are/were being held in the barracks housing the Armtha SS troops. Assume they were transfered to the embassy when the SS vacated that barracks?

OOC: That's what I figured - that they were still in Tahoan custody.

"Now they plan on turning Cuba into a colony, I suppose. It's currently under a military occupation. The population is fairly apathetic, which is making occupation easier for us."

While the two men took in the sunshine while casually making their way walking to the terminal, Strijdom told Van Haesten that he “…wasn’t aware that Tahoe had expanded into the Caribbean. That could prove quite useful between our two nations as that would allow Afrikaanse Lugdiens to finally establish service between Transvaal and Tahoe. Cuba is just within the flying range of their Boeing 707s.”

“Hopefully Tahoe’s experience at colonization is more fruitful than what we Transvalers have experienced. Our lone foray into colonization in the New World ended in disaster… although it did ultimately permit me to become prime minister after Hertzog was forced to resign due to opposition within the ranks of the National Party to our Paraguayan adventure. Republicanism runs deep within our people and the party, but also Tahoe’s strong stance on colonial also factored, as some did not wish to come into direct conflict with Tahoe over a worthless scrap of South America.”

OOC: I’m pretty much wrapping up my end of this RP now. Unless you wish to add further details of Strijdom’s trip to Tahoe, I’m now assuming that Strijdom takes some down time in Tahoe to rehabilitate his health over the next few months.

Sometime over the weekend I’ll post details of the cabinet meeting – but this RP has pretty much run its course now.
