Today, the two main rail companies in Marscurian Siberia, Marscurian Siberian Railways and Marscurian Siberian Eastern, agreed to a merger agreement to become one nation. The new company has been renamed Marscurian Siberian National Rail, and is expected to be the second largest transportation company in the nation, just behind Marscurian Siberian Airways, and just ahead of its nearest freight competitor Shif Shipping. With the government's 50% ownership of Marscurian Siberian Railways, the new company will be 25% government owned, with the rest of the shares being owned by the owners of the previous two companies.

New Rayon Created!
It's official, the sixth rayon of Marscurian Siberia has been passed through the Duma. In the vote, 9 of the 10 Duma representatives voted on the measure to allow the area around the capital city of Marscury to form its own rayon. The vote came after a general vote among the residents of the Bira Rayon on the separation of the Rayon, which holds the majority of the nation's population. The vote was close, but came out to 61% in favor of the split, just above the 60% needed for the measure to pass. The one vote in the Duma that was against the split was Duma Member Vladimir Gessen, a native of Mietonka. In a comment, DM Gessen stated, "I voted against the split because it could lead to a severe depreciation in the amount of money and attention that are sent to the rest of the rayon after the loss of the most important city." The majority of the voters in favor of the separation were Marscury residents, many of whom were tired of having to split funds and services with Mietonka, the largest city in the nation, which is also in the Bira Rayon.

The separation of the rayon is set to take place on July 21st, Marscurian Siberian Independence Day. At that time, Marscury will be the seat of the Marscury Rayon, while Mietonka will become the new seat of the the Bira Rayon. Also at that time, the terms of the Duma Members will be expiring, and general elections will begin for the now 12 members of the Second Duma.

Army Modernization Continues
In the continued efforts of decreasing costs and increasing the effectiveness of the Marscurian Siberian army, two new changes were unveiled today. First, the new uniform of the average soldier has been given a substantial upgrade from the old uniforms, and secondly, a new battle rifle has been chosen to replace the MR-64 as the standard weapon.

The new uniforms are considered vast upgrades for several reasons. Primarily, they move from the completely olive-drab color of the old uniforms to a mixture of greens, blacks, and browns, which are better suited to blend in with the natural surroundings and to provide better camouflage. Also, the new uniform has fewer articles of clothing, removing the old button-down middle shirt and the leggings that the old uniforms had. Improved boots are expected to make long marches more comfortable, and the looser fit of the trousers is expected to allow for freer movement and better running.

The second major upgrade is the addition of a new battle rifle to replace the MR-64. The new gun, the MR-87, also built by Marscurian Military Works, was selected by a panel of soldiers and officers to be the new replacement. They noted many improvements over the old gun. The -87 is several pounds lighter than the -64, mainly due to the wide use of synthetic materials in many parts of the weapon. The -87 is also several inches shorter than the -64, allowing for freer movement in smaller locations. Finally, the -87 uses the same 7.62x51mm cartridge used in all other small arms in the military, rather than the 7.62x55mm cartridge used by the -64, which required special ordering. Over the next few months, the MR-64 will be phased out of service as troops are taught how to effectively use the new MR-87.

INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Today is a great day for our nation. It marks the one year anniversary of the date when Marscurian Siberia gained its independence from Vauleyo-Buryatia. The entire nation is in celebration as the milestone was reached in style. From a tiny migrant community, the nation now has a population of over 1 million in several thriving population centers. A greater success story is hard to come by in this world. Here are some stories of how various communities around the nation celebrated the first Independence Day.

The Water Festival in Telmana drew large amounts of people to the Amur River on this hot afternoon for some fun aquatic activities. The day was kicked off by a milk-carton boat race, with Telmana High School winning the even with their turnip-shaped raft. Water skiing shows were put on earlier in the afternoon, to the delight of the people eating at picnics along the river shore. Tours of Telmana harbor were given to eager visitors, excited to learn about the busiest harbor in Marscurian Siberia. When the sun finally went down, dozens of barges anchored in the Amur set off a massive fireworks display set to several soundtracks, from classical music to pop hits.

Today marks the first day that the Masibau Brokve went on sale in dealerships throughout the nation. The car is the smallest in the history of Marscurian Siberian automobile production. With only three wheels and a 50cc 5hp engine, the car is advertised to fit one person and a shopping bag. The car has a top speed of 35 miles per hour, and a mileage of 100 miles per gallon. The name Brokve, or "turnip," does not merely reflect the car's unique shape, but also the fact that the body of the car is made of a special composite which is mainly comprised of turnips.

Mass Transit Construction Continues at Astounding Pace

All over the nation, the largest cities are developing mass transit systems to better improve the commutes of the people. The new transportation systems will be faster, cheaper, and cleaner than traveling by car, and will reduce the congestion that the rapid influx of affordable Masibau automobiles has brought to the nation. The types of transportation, the construction process, and the maintenance of the systems are all the responsibility of the respective cities. However, an umbrella organization, The Marscurian Siberian Metro Authority, is responsible for creating and enforcing safety regulations.

The Marscury Metro is a subway system. Due to its elevated position and distance from the floods of the Amur River, Marscury was one of the only cities where a subway system was feasible.

The Mietonka Metro is a revolutionary monorail system. The city's low-lying position close to the Amur River disqualified the popular choice of a subway system. The monorail was chosen because of its sleek, modern design, and its elevated design that allows it to save space by being placed above streets.

Biofuels Industry Rapidly Growing
The biofuels industry in Marscurian Siberia is experiencing a massive expansion with the development of a new synthetic fuel system at the Mietonka University of Science and Technology. The ability to develop synthetic petroleum from biomass, mainly turnip leaves, the large domestic coal reserves, and from methane gas, developed mainly from decomposing turnip mass. The development of a domestic source of fuel has become a top priority with the newly brewing instabilities and transportation insecurities in the traditional oil sources, Arabia and Northern Siberia. A small demonstration plant has been built at the university, while a large complex is currently under construction in Obluchye.

Economy Prepares For Winter Transitions
A sudden cold snap across the country was a shocking reminder that winter was approaching, and with it a massive change in the Marscurian Siberian economy. Although they just missed a killing frost, the turnip farmers around the nation have begun to shift their harvest into high gear. Winter is always a tough time for farmers, as the cold prevents the growing of crops, and therefore stops all money flow.

"I know the big companies have their greenhouses," said Yuri Kolkhoi, a farmer from the Telmana suburbs, "but my neighbors and I simply can't afford it. My family will definitely be spending less, and the farmhands will have to go without pay as well. Winter is always tough."

The ports of Telmana and Glubokiye Vodishtot are also preparing for the winter too. The Marscurian Siberian Port Authority has set a date of October 31st in which both ports must close for the winter. From November to the end of March, pack ice on the Amur River shuts down navigation completely. At this point, all exports from the nation must be done by road or rail, and all intercontinental freight will be transferred to the Chinese ports of Vladivostok and Tianjin.

However, the winter does not necessarily mean economic downturns. The fur industry is expected to receive a major boost with the arrival of the white coats for rabbits and stoats. Tourism, especially skiing in the western hills, is also expected to increase with the winter snows, increasing demand in the service sector of the economy.

At the Port of Telmana, the preparations for the winter freeze of the Amur River are moving along on schedule. Elsewhere, the 1st Fleet and the patrol boats of the Amur Police have moved into their winter berths in the port. With this, all exports will need to be directed by way of truck or train. However, with the absorption of Zargathia into the UFE, Marscurian Siberia's largest trade partner and destination for exports, there is not expected to be any effect in economic progress.

This is not to say that this car is just for cruising the vista. With an estimated 220 horsepower produced from its 2.4L I5 engine, the M850 has been clocked up to 155 miles per hour. With an average price of around 24,000 rubles, this family car is flying off the showroom floor. One dealer said that the average time from delivery to sale of the car was 15 minutes! Community Outreach Program Begun
A new outreach program has been implemented by the government throughout the Bidzhan Rayon. Long dubbed "A nation within a nation," the Bidzhan Rayon, with its administrative center at Pyotrgrad, is majority of the Bidzhan population is Vauleyo-Buryatian, rather than Marscurian. These are the people who either lived in the region when it was still part of Vauleyo-Buryatia, or are refugees who have fled the instability in their home nation. Regardless, there has been little attempt to integrate the region into greater Marscurian Siberian society. Even Vauleyo-Buryatian flags still fly at a 2:1 ratio to Marscurian Siberian flags. In order to stir a new sense of belonging, the "Your City, Your Country" poster campaign was started. The purpose of this effort is to show that people can have pride in their city and unique culture, but that they can also be part of the greater national community. By printer estimates, over 1 million posters, 30 posters for every citizen of Pyotrgrad, have been pasted to walls and street corners around the city.

The activity, which involves climbing onto the locomotive of a moving train, strapping a rope or chain to the funnel, and riding through curvy sections of track, has only become more popular with the increase in rail traffic. Although it has been declared a crime to engage in the activity, punishable by both a fine and jail time, practice has largely gone unpunished due to the lack of police officers able to police the tracks.

From Glubokiye Vodishtot:
Massive Blasts Rock City
Residents of Glubokiye Vodishtot were awoken early this morning by a large series of blasts that occurred on the western outskirts of the city. Far from the bombs that have been falling to the south, these were set explosions to clear out land for a massive expansion of the Obluchye Heavy Engineering shipyards. The expansion is set to add several new drydocks to increase the output of the yards. The OHE shipyards mainly produce the large river ships and monitors that sail the Amur River, but this new expansion should allow the company to expand their business to small ocean-going cargo ships and warships. The main body of work is progressing over this winter, as the Amur River is frozen, allowing the construction companies to work all the way up to the water's edge. The yards are expected to be completely excavated by the spring, and hopefully operational by the summer of 2012.

From Amurpet:
New Livestock Arrive From Canada

After making their way from Canada to China, the train carrying 100 American Bison arrived in Amurpet. The bison were ordered after a massive increase in demand for their meat occurred over the past several months. The American bison were chosen instead of their European counterparts due to their larger size and more gentle temperament making them much easier to domesticate. Buffalo are favored by ranchers due to their ease of care and disease resistance, and consumers have taken to the meat's low fat content. The bison in this shipment were chosen with enough genetic diversity to prevent too much inbreeding from taking its toll on the meat supply. The bison were broken off into two groups of 50 animals each. The first group was given to a co-op of private ranchers who are part of breeding program to massively increase the size of the herd, and the second group of 50 animals was taken by the government for their own breeding programs.

From Marscury:
Prince Vladimir Given New Title
With Khan Mikhail's frequent excursions, including the recent voyage to the front lines, there is a need to appoint a man to lead the nation in his stead. That is why his unlce, Vladimir, currently the head of diplomacy, was given the new title of Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is given all the powers of the Khan while the official ruler is out of the nation.
