Emperor Rick
Just got a warning saying "It's getting crowded in Empire of Arizona. Your population density of 81.04 population per mile is considered high. You should consider purchasing more land." Never had to worry about buying land till now whats the side effects for it being to crowded? lose one happiness? does it stack up the higher it gets? thedestro
Buy some land until the message goes away and note any happiness changes. The cost of losing money from income outweighs the cost of buying a little bit of land anyway. And you need water.
Count Rupert
Well, maybe he didn't have to worry about buying land because he had Water before. He has two open trades slots, perhaps one was occupied by water. I believe the effect is -1 happiness and that there are no further effects. There is a cheaper method for him to test the effect to happiness for being over 70 population density. He could decom 14,000 soldiers which will drop his population density below 70 and he can see if he picks up a happiness point or not before he decides on spending a lot of money buying land. Franziskaner
There is also the fact that there is now a happiness bonus for having a population density under 20. I would suggest buying enough land to keep yourself under that marker, it has done wonders for my population count, happiness, and general economy. Count Rupert
And hence probably not worth the cost to do so in your case. You would need around 5100 miles of land to get your population density under 20. You have 1257 miles so buying some 3843 miles to receive one happiness point doesn't seem to be very cost effective.
