Happiness effects money.

1 happiness is the equivalent of just under $2.

Nope - Happiness-to-income varies based on tech level, wonders/improvements, and other factors. Typical range for one happiness is between $2.5 and $4 (trending towards lower for smaller nations), but as high as $5 or more.

So, if it's an option between +$2 income and +1 Happiness, always take the happy option. At other amounts (+1H or +$3, for example) it depends on your nation.

Yeah, there's a 1 happiness = $2 ratio only if you don't have improvements.  Once you get 5 banks you're at an automatic (5x7%) 35% increase, or $2.70 instead of a flat $2.  Any improvement that mentions an additional x% citizen income does the same thing.

I believe I'm at 1 happiness = $4.30 right now, which is about where it caps.

1 happiness does equal $2, but that's base income.  For events modifying citizen income, that is also base income.  If you're choosing between +1 happiness and +$3 citizen income, choose +$3 because it's equivalent to getting +1.5 happiness.

Almost correct. You forgot the impact of the environment.
