Thomas Jefferson's Rightful Land

"Malta does not have any real vested interest in this region. That being said we prefer to see bloodshed if possible. With this in mind, Malta will stand ready to support the UCS to enforce their doctrine in the Atlantic Ocean side of the canals to ensure that these war hungry North American nations do not spread death and destruction to a vital avenue of commerce. Commerce and trade are an inalienable human right and a vital cog in the machinery of progress."

A taskforce of destroyers, frigates, and submarines are ordered to begin assembling for a long range patrol of the Atlantic. With the deployment of Hope Float 2 back to Malta, a the escorts of that fleet are put on home duty while vessels from the Armed Forces Malta Home Fleet are assigned to this duty.

Shipping on the Pacific side of the canal zone would find themselves constantly observed by Imperium drones, any any vessels with California flags would be asked to stop by Type 022 missile boats.

David Marxon, President, understood that they had said many times that they did not want to use aggression, yet the nation's of the world did not listen. In fact, he decided to count.

In the past 3 years of the California Republic's existence, we have always believed the California-Cascadia border to be what was defined as the Jefferson-Oregon border when Jefferson was admitted as a state only 2 years before the nations collapse. However, as we have always considered this, we never have truly had a military, or much of a political, presence there because Cascadia has been there much longer. We are prepared to have full occupation of Jefferson State now, and would like Cascadia to cease all operations. What land this will include will be in an attachment to this message. Please, while you decide, keep in mind that this is not much land(considering you are annexing British Colombia as well) and there is not much infrastructure there, making it mostly farmland. We do not have to go to war just to get what is rightfully property of Jefferson State, which is our northernmost state. Thank you.

California House of Representatives

You misunderstand, Emperor. We do not wish to show hostility towards Cascadia. We understand Cascadia and it's feelings towards this land, and rest assured as we are sure that the people of North Jefferson would appreciate to be reunited with it's brothers of the former state rather than remaining in this "nation" of Cascadia. This is not to say that Cascadia is not worthy of these lands, but that the State of Jefferson deserves to be reunited with it's former counterparts. We as a nation believe that this small area being brought into the "sovereign and grand" California Republic will not even have much of an impact on your nation in any way, whether politically or militarily, or any other. In a way, sir, you are doing the Jeffersonians a favor by allowing them to be with their family on the other side of this border. Rest assured, the California Republic will be willing to pay a decent and fair amount of money in exchange for the piece of land. No, we are not buying people: We are buying land, and if they truly want to remain in Cascadia, they should move north. Yes, you may hold Southern Oregon close to your heart, but my entire nation holds Northern Jefferson and it's people close to our hearts. In response to your comment about Mr. Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson was a great man who believed in the United States of America, as well as Democracy, not the Cascadian Empire led by a sovereign. I encourage you to not use hostility, but to act like the civilized person I am sure you are, and hopefully we may come to an arrangement.

The California Republic was formed 3 years ago with a couple goals in mind: Reform democracy and restore was of the United States of America. This does not mean destroy any nation that opposes democracy, smashing through anything in our path until we reach Washington D.C, then claim ourselves the United States of America. This means reform democracy and what it once was in the United States, as well as restore what the United States of America first built. We intend to continue our journey by claiming Thomas Jefferson's prized possession: The State of Jefferson.

I am sure that this appears as if we are becoming more and more aggressive, but we can assure you that since day 1 it has been our plan to expand into Baja California. You should also understand that we, the only 2 nations that have a reason to be in this conflict, are currently being civilized and attempting to talk this out. What you Texans fail to understand is that in war, nobody wins, yet you seem to not care if you lose 1 man. We fear for our soldiers, we know that once one dies, the war has been lost. I assure you once again, we have no plans to expand beyond the Baja Peninsula and Jefferson. We are sure your frustration comes from the fact that your nation simply cannot expand, with Plains on three sides and Marco to the south. If anything, should you not be getting aggravated at UCS for literally sitting in your backdoor, claiming a decent amount of land to your south? Is that not taken as a threat to the security of Texas? I will, of course, allow Texas to establish a small base right on the tip of  the Baja Peninsula. To us, your aggression is a threat to our national security. Democracy, my friend. Over 70 percent of the State of Jefferson in California voted saying they want us to get back what was lost: Northern Jefferson. We are doing what the people want, it is Democracy at work. We never threatened them with military force like you claim either, as I said, we are the ones that are promoting negotiation. This problem is so far to your west you shouldn't even care what's going on. We would be clueless to attack Texas, another state run by democracy, we are practically brothers when it comes to our nations. I am sure if you step back and look closer you will see what is going on here.

California House of Representatives

If there is anything we can assure you, it is that we do not want to leave as enemies. That is why we have not yet attacked, because we need to find a way to achieve our goal without leaving with you and your people hating us. We are sure you will understand. I want us to solve this together, not against each other. This should be a small speed bump on a road larger, with huge, large bumps we have to work together to surpass. And we both know that this will not be solved through war, as we have all read about you and your fantastic leadership: and for that we salute you. We salute anyone that can lead an entire country, regardless on if it is led by a President or an Emperor. And if you are as smart as we believe you to be, then you know very well that war will not solve this issue. That leaves us with a couple of options: We pay you, we share it, it becomes a no-mans land, you give it to us, we negotiate and split the land. We just want what our people want: Perhaps it is a fatal flaw of democracy, or perhaps it is another great strength.

California House of Representatives

Gerald Herald died hoping for one thing: Baja California through peace. We support the Marco Doctrine and thanked you for your allowance for us to have Baja. Texas attempts to take that away and what do you do? All we have ever done is support UCS, and you let Herald die just to be forgotten. We beg for your assistance.

David Marxon

Representative of Herald, the granter of Dying Wishes.

California is done playing games. we will take a break from all of these nations, as you are all a disrespect to the dead, and fail to understand the goals and values of President Herald(R.I.P). I assure you we never meant any harm or aggression, as we have so many times, yet you still refuse to accept the fact. Is all you people care about to get to shoot at something moving? UCS excused, of course, as all they have ever done is cooperate, even when we have been difficult. God bless the Caribbean.

David Marxon

If the plain evidence was not enough for any nation to see, the Californians did not know what was.

In Malta, the Les Terribles were spending their day doing what they normally do, not much of anything. As hardened fighting men they knew their trade and weren't apt to make much of a fuss about it. Leave the parades for others, they had better things to do. A burner phone chimed and was promptly examined. The contents of the message was related to the rest of the men who started running in every which direction as they gathered their gear. More calls were made and soon numerous bars and brothels in the Order Entertainment Zone emptied out as a scruffy bunch of rogues scrambled to gather their equipment.

The lot of them descended on a dock outside Valletta. The guard shack was empty as the guard took one look at the arriving mob and joined them. Once more or less everyone had arrived, the motley crew marched down to the dock and selected four vessels that suited their tastes. After fueling them, stocking them with munitions, and stealing as many spare parts as they could, the ships departed. Once the ships made their way through the Suez Canal, they'd be joined by another three vessels from Port Sudan carrying Legion Brotherhood volunteers.

After being sure the ships had made it into the Indian Ocean, a notice would be circulated reporting the theft of seven ships from Maltese shipyards.

"After careful deliberation both inside the national government and internationaly, the UCS has decided to edit the Marco Doctrine to also include the Baja Peninsula. This comes after both Texas and California have demonstrated, very clearly, that they both lack the qualifications to handle this situation and to handle governing the Peninsula. We will not sit idly by as these nations prepare to subject the innocent peoples of the Peninsula to the horrors of war. Texas and California, you are now in violation of the Marco Doctrine and are ordered to leave the Baja Peninsula immediately. We strongly recommended your compliance."
-President Marco

"Sir, the Treaty is completed. We have just been trying to get Texas to cease fire long enough to sign it. we are trying here. We are trying our hardest to bring this to  peaceful end, while everyone gets what they want. I am trying my best to stay respectful here, you must understand the situation we are faced with."

Strangely, the stolen Les Terribles ships would go unnoticed, and the information they were stolen in the first place went uncirculated among the Imperium's military.

[hr]

The Indonesian Archipelago had hundreds of islands, some uninhabited, according to maps at least. The Shinjikēto had eyes and ears throughout the so called white space, natural narcotics were illegal and the Imperium had a tendency to react harshly when it had the option to. Naggaroth's government may have disappeared, but the pirates who inhabited the southern ocean did not. The promise of a good haul and the sudden appearance of several well stocked Container ships, modified to work as functional carriers of a swarm of a dozen smaller civilian craft that were modified to hold several cruise missiles and 50. machine guns, gave them all the reason they needed. The small fleet of two container ships and several "frigates", modified civilian vessels with various short range missiles, departed from Indonesia, staying away from any large islands until they were a few hundred miles away from the West Coast of the United States.

:Diplomatic Cable to California:

President Marxon,

I am writing to you in the interest of securing peace within the Pacific, hostilities between nations in the Pacific is bad for Imperium business, and what is bad for our business tends to negatively impact those causing it far more dramatically than they end up affecting us. Your nation has at minimum, lost its leadership and this will promote further instability, while at this time I am uncertain as to who perpetrated the attack, you should be more interested in internal focus than continued expansion.

With that in mind, your forces have 24 hours to withdraw from the Baja Peninsula. I am willing to work with you to find a peaceful resolution, but the continued incursion must cease for diplomacy to prevail.

The Les Terribles and their allies were proceeding towards California at flank speed. They literally had the throttles jammed full open and were using bed sheets as sails. The four frigates and three corvettes had been repainted with a variety of murals that included, but was not limited to, the following.

"California or Bust"

"Dis Gon B' Gud"

"We will, we will @#$# you.."

Numerous blood dripping shark jaws graced the prows of the ships along with various Tianxian Military Unit identifiers. The Legion Brotherhood units had brought along their helpful assortment of identification cards and so forth. Given that Tianxia had been nuked into the stone age, the blackmarket was awash with Tianxian Military Identification Cards. Enough of these had been procured, altered, and issued out to give a person the notion that these rascals were former Tianxian Military troops. Books and magazines from the former rogue regime had been salted about the ships with a liberal touch. All other ID cards, credit cards, and other sorts of things had been swept up, put into a storage container and sent back to Port Sudan via a passing Maltese Cargo ship.

The ships were swept twice more as days went by, any additional identifiers were put into weighted buckets and set on fire and left to burn before being tossed overboard. By no means was the sweep perfect, but the hope was it would prove confusing enough that linking the Les Terribles and the Legion Brotherhood back to Malta would prove damn difficult. The stolen warships were ships ceased from a fallen African state and kept in a shipyard to be put on sale or rebuilt for other uses. The munitions had been removed from the ships long ago and put in storage ashore, which is where they had been recovered by the Les Terribles. A small cargo ship carrying fuel, additional food, munitions, and parts had been leased from Legionworks by a blackfund with money from various cash only donations to a bank in Port Sudan.

The ships proceeded with speakers blaring the following

No response would be given to the Imperium's request, and there would be radio silence. All communications throughout and to the outside were blocked off, and nobody on the outside, or inside, would know what was going on. On the inside, and what the outside was unaware of, was that loud alarms were going off signaling people to get into secure shelters. Some people were loud, others were silent, but either way they were not able to be heard or seen from the distance, just looking like a normal day in California. However, it was true that something else was going on here, yet, with no way to discover what exactly was happening. The evacuation gave the government time to consult and figure out what was to happen. People sat in safe bunkers and shelters for hours...and hours...and hours.

It would be 18 hours until anyone was was aware of what was going on, excluding the government. However, by the time 18 hours was reached, the nations of the world were most likely smart enough to discover that something was going on. Not a single plane had flown overhead. Not a single discussion on the radio. Not a single message from the California Government. Even in Baja California, the same actions were taking place. Not even a boat had gone by them since.

What was going on? Well, at hour number 18, California woke back up. California woke up unaware of what had happened. Yet, the tables had seemed to have turned, as all government buildings were abandoned. Still, no response. It would likely take the foreigners to realize, but they would soon discover that Baja California was abandoned. Only some citizens, but not near as many as before. No, it seemed as if both the government and 30-45 percent of the Baja citizens had gone missing. Under further examination, it would be discovered that almost 95 percent of the missing people had recently gotten California Citizenship.

Operation Baja Blast

Mechanized Infantry Battalions would be sent from Chihuahua to fhe cities of Mexicali, Tijuana, and Tecate, backed with air support. Not far behind them, heavier batallions were on the way to reinforce the positions. Once the rest of the division caught up, they would spread out covering highways and major road ways, effectively cutting off the Peninsula from further Californian deployments. They would find that the peninsula had been abandoned by the Californian military, and the people's lives had returned to normal.

In the air, AWACs would begin searching for any signs of Californian military still operating on the Peninsula. In the event they were in fact still in Baja, their positions would be noted for future use if war began.

(OOC: short of you rounding up the people of Baja and killing them, I won't be recognizing whatever that is above. You can't RP the citizens of a territory you don't own, IIRC) Edited by supercheese

"Hello, can you please say tell us your name?" A reporter stood in Mexicali with young Latino Male, no older then 25. "My name is Alejandro." The man said softly. In the background UCS soldiers and Humanitarian workers could be seen distributing aid and attending to Meixcan citizens."Can you tell us what happened during the Californian occupation?" The man went silent for a moment, visibly shaken. "It's ok, your a safe." Finally the man started talking. "At first they were friendly, offering us citizenship into the republic, offering to help better our lives. We believed they truly had our best interests at heart. Well most of us did, there were some, my brother one of them, that didn't want to join California, that we had to have pride in our Mexican heritage, that one day we would rise again. They were the first to disappear. More and more of us began to grow suspicious, and the disappearances only got more frequent. Then we heard rumors that the Caribbean had come to help us, to help all of Mexico one day join the world. We asked he Californians to leave, but they refused. We joined togther in peaceful protest, and that, thats when the beatings began. They beat down anyone who dared oppose them, some to the point of death. Finally we heard they were leaving, we thought we were free. We were wrong, they had one last horrible act, to punish us I can only assume. They broke into our houses in the middle of the Night, and loaded our people onto trucks at gun point. They took my wife, they took my newborn son, they mine aswell of taken my life." The man broke down, sobbing heavily. "To the people's of California, I just want my family back. I beg of you, let them come back to me."

"There you have it ladies and gentlemen, this is UCS news, live from the Baja Peninsula where a terrible tragedy has taken place. Many on the Peninsula are now asking themselves, will they ever see their loved ones again?"

Chaos ensued in California. People begged for an attack on the UCS because of the lies spoken. The government would remain as silent as they said they would be. The rescued Baja Californians would be given Unemployment Benefits until they found a job, and Social Security would also be given. If people thought they were kidnapping, they needed to open their eyes.

The Northlands is saddened to see the situation in Baja California deteriorate further and we hope the situation can be solved without bloodshed. As a party currently not involved in the conflict, the Northlands is willing to host a meeting between California, Texas, and the UCS to resolve the crisis in Mexico, should that option be supported by all three involved parties. We are hopeful that an agreeable compromise could be reached.

OOC: Peter and I have reached a conclusion where the Baja population is optionally canon, so I will no longer be pursuing that.

IC:
With California pulling out of Baja the ban on its economic traffic through the canals would be lifted. All that was left to deal with now was the Texans, and with the Plains Federation bearing down on them it was doubtful they would resist.

A message would be delivered to Texas
"As we understand it, Texas proper is under threat by the Plains Federation. We will allow your forces to pass through Northern Mexico to defend Texas. We hope you accept so we may put an end to this whole situation."
