VINSALIAN CITIES FALL LIKE DOMINOES; SYRACUSE LOST

UKRAINERussianConvoyMar2014_large.jpg

SYRACUSE, VINSALIA -- The Allied forces retreated from Syracuse today as the North American Commonwealth continues to press eastward. Buffalo fell in February and Rochester in April. The Commonwealth Army appears to be the only truly unstoppable force in the war as they continue onwards towards Albany. Originally it was expected that Rome would be supporting the allied movements by deploying troops to the area. Although 50,000 European soldiers are in Vinsalia, the deployment of more has been halted after the Grand Ottoman Empire declared war on Rome, opening up a new theater of war.

"The Commonwealth is coming at us hard," Minister of Defense Thomas Malvern told reporters at a news conference today. "They may be better armed, but we will wear them down. We know where they are headed, and we plan to make a stand." Malvern also announced he would personally be heading to Albany to conference with the Vinsalian generals.

President Laurent has ordered the deployment of an additional 75,000 troops to Utica. This raises the number of deployed troops to 250,000. Only 75,000 active-duty troops remain in J Andres and she has stated they will not be deployed, and must remain without our borders in case our own territory is threatened. Edited by J Andres

ROSSINGOL GOVERNOR DEAD

Horst-Seehofer-006.jpg

ROSSINGOL -- William Hahn, the man who served as Governor of Rossingol for more than 25 years passed away this morning succumbing to complications that developed after a fall last month. Hahn is perhaps best remembered as a Presidential candidate in 2052, in which he spoke highly of imperialism. He was very popular within the Nationalist party, until the same royals he spoke so highly of dragged the nation through Richard's Rebellion. Although he was a polarizing figure nationally, he always was a popular figure here in Rossingol, were he was first elected Governor in 2055 and has not lost an election since. Prior to politics, Hahn was a welder at Kensington Mews Shipbuilding, and eventually a semi-professional bowler, a hobby he continued even as his health began to falter.

Although Hahn was up for re-election next year, a special election date has been set for December 6. Speculation is rampant as to who the candidates might be.

LABOR PARTY VIABLE IN FIRST ELECTION

130x150marissaroth.png130x150ernestbarnes.png

ROSSINGOL -- The Labor Party is posing a credible threat to the Nationalist Party dominance in Rossingol. Following the death of William Hahn, the Governor's Office is vacant and will be filled by a special election in about six weeks. Marissa Roth, CEO of Pfizer Quigley was the early favorite in the four-way race, but polls now show her running nearly even with the Labor Party candidate, Ernest Barnes, an economics professor at Connecticut College. Also running, in a distant third and fourth place, are the Communist and Anchor Party candidates, Robert Lewis, and Amy Snow.

Roth has promised to foster the businesses that make Rossingol the capital of J Andres industry, and Barnes has promised nothing short of working with other elected leaders to end the war. The lofty promise by Barnes has earned him an audience, even though it will be a tall order and nearly impossible to fulfill. This election is the first true test for the Labor party which formed last year. The Labor Party was expected to be competitive for some of the governorships next year, particularly in Danbury and Lanier, but Rossingol would be unexpected and could potentially have significant impact on the electoral maps for future elections.

TIKAL ON LAST LEG

campeche-san-miguel-fort-560x370.jpg

CAMPECHE, TIKAL -- The city of Campeche is no stranger to invasion, and was fortified by the Spanish in the 1600's. The ancient walls will likely not be enough to repel the Mexican army, who have much more sophisticated weaponry than the pirates and marauders of the colonial days. Morale is low in Tikal since the surrender of Ortega's army in Penjamillo, and the situation here in Campeche is dire. The Mexican navy in conjunction with the southern fleet of the Commonwealth are policing the Gulf of Mexico to ensure additional troops from the north don't find their way to the peninsula. The Quintana Roo casino has begun taking bets on when Tikal will surrender. The odds Tikal falls before the end of the year: 3:1.

ERNEST BARNES WINS GOVERNORSHIP

WEB-barnes_JPG_1275160cl-8.jpg

ROSSINGOL -- The Labor Party has struck gold in its first election, prying the governorship of Rossingol from the Nationalist Party in a province that was expected to be secure. In real terms, this is likely to be insignificant. As the governor of Rossingol, Ernest Barnes will not be able to enact the sweeping proposals that the Labor Party is fighting for; however, this is a sign of things to come. 2082 is just around the corner, and with it will be the remaining gubernatorial elections. How many other provinces will the Labor Party be able to gain? Will these gains hold for the Commune elections in 2084? The presidential election?

For now, those questions will remain unanswered. Last night, Barnes stated in his victory speech, that he would travel to the Southwest Socialist Republic to meet with Ernesto Espada to see if they could agree on a way to end the war. Prince Phillippe has offered to accompany the new governor on his trip. President Charlotte Laurent has condemned the trip, stating that foreign affairs should be handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, not by renegade governors.

NEW YORK CITY FALLS TO COMMONWEALTH

hustle1.jpg

NEW YORK CITY, VINSALIA -- Ten months after the Commonwealth troops forced the Vinsalian air force out of JFK airport, the army has moved into and captured the city. The Commonwealth army had advanced slowly over the past many months, as they proceeded carefully to avoid numerous traps left in the city by the Vinsalian army. After a prolonged bombing campaign, the many of the bombs and barricades were destroyed and the army has now captured the city.

The Commonwealth army is now within striking distance of the J Andres border. Many citizens living in the southern Danbury province have evacuated eastward. Although it is unknown if the Commonwealth will take a two-pronged approach to Albany, or if the New York army will now swing into J Andres.
For now, those questions will remain unanswered. Last night, Barnes stated in his victory speech, that he would travel to the Southwest Socialist Republic to meet with Ernesto Espada to see if they could agree on a way to end the war. COMMUNE STRUGGLES TO FIND WAR FUNDING

5142918381_8ae214404f_z.jpg

ENDOR CUIDAD -- As the war continues much longer than anticipated, the financial realities have become more clear, and the Commune has not determined how to continue funding the war efforts. Although the leaders of the three parties are united in the belief that the war effort must be funded, they do not agree in the methods. Communist Party Leader Nicholas Egorov has proposed to increase the corporate tax rate, Premier Daniel Young proposed to cut public assistance programs, and Nationalist Party Leader Albert Hahn has proposed to institute a national property tax. Debate among all the options is ongoing and support is not split along party lines.

RACES TO WATCH IN GUBERNATORIAL ELECTIONS

130x150williamduffy.png130x150phillipgordon.png130x150stevesteel.png

The incumbent Governors of J Andres

ENDOR CUIDAD -- With a few months before the Gubernatorial elections, the Political Staff of the Anchor Times is only comfortable calling one of the races: Ernest Barnes will remain Governor of Rossingol. The Labor Party Governor elected last year in a special election proved that the Labor Party could win, even deep inside Nationalist Territory. Over the past year the political tides and the state of the war will continue to bolster the Labor Party cause, and we cannot see the voters rejecting him after only one year in office.

For the rest of the Governors, there could be some big changes. As the country begins to grow weary of the war, backlash against the Anchor Party is likely. There is a high probability of the Labor Party candidates taking Danbury and Lanier, and we are even showing Communist Party candidates potentially doing well in places like Providence and Boston. The Communist Party will need to begin performing well in the east if the west becomes Labor Party territory, otherwise the Communist Party in its entirety may be squeezed out of contention.

NEW GOVERNORS INAUGURATED

The newly-elected Governors of J Andres

ENDOR CUIDAD -- Half of the incumbent governors have fallen, and half of the provincial executive branches are now ruled by the Labor party. Governors from the Labor party rule Danbury, Lanier, and Rossingol. Communists in Providence? This most recent election has caused political writers to throw out all their previous knowledge. The map means nothing. Traditional nationalist areas are now being carried by the far left. Only the Grand Duchy of Boston remains solidly in favor of the Anchor Party.

What does all this mean for the Presidential elections in two years? Although the war appears to becoming less hostile, the people are weary. The speeches of the far-left are being heard not only in the west, but in the east.

President Laurent has announced there will be an important press conference later in the week. What can we expect? Will she be willing to work with the Labor Party governors to gain the approval of the people? Will she attempt to finish all her goals while the existing Commune is still in place?

NUCLEAR WEAPON PROGRAM REINSTATED

TridentAP460.jpg

ENDOR CUIDAD -- President Laurent surprised many today when she announced that the Maritime Republic is now in the possession of multiple nuclear warheads. "J Andres takes steps on to the world stage as a nuclear power," she said in her speech. The President would not state how many nuclear weapons had been constructed, only that the nuclear program had been revived for the past six months. "Since the first collapse in 2011, J Andres has struggled to project its military might. Now, the world is engulfed in war, and we have a new arsenal to protect ourselves with."

The international community had a mixed response to the announcement. The North American Commonwealth condemned it, stating "J Andres has been an unstable entity in North America for a century. They cannot be trusted as a custodian of nuclear weapons." Even allies like Vinsalia were not enthused by the announcement, "Although we are pleased with the success of J Andres, we are wary J Andres has placed a target on itself and we are concerned due to our proximity."

COMMONWEALTH WITHDRAWS FORCES, CALLS IT REDEPLOYMENT

10843_1.jpg

ALBANY -- Albany had been under heavy fire from the Commonwealth for months until early this morning, when the majority of the Commonwealth troops retreated west. "We don't know what happened," said Major Collins with the Vinsalian army. "They had us outgunned, but then they started retreating."

At a domestic press conference, President Sean Bronson called the retreat, a "redeployment," but this can't be interpreted in any way other than as good news to the Vinsalian and J Andres forces which had been defending the city.

LAURENT REFUSES TO END NUCLEAR PROGRAM; PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES DISAGREE

tokyo-march-stop-nuclear.si.jpg

ENDOR CUIDAD -- The Coalition for a Better America's announcement last month has thrown politicians a curve ball. Although Charlotte Laurent was expected to face competition based on her handling of the war efforts, she was still considered a strong favorite for the election this year. However, since the Coalition has threatened J Andres with "nuclear annihilation" things have heated up and numerous candidates are stepping forward and considering a run. Laurent has held fast to her position that J Andres should not allow other nations to determine its foreign policy. "Our sovereignty will not be compromised by the Coalition. They will be defeated, and we shall prevail."

Labor Party rising star, Ernest Barnes, current governor of Danbury has declared his candidacy and vowed to remove J Andres nuclear weapons and ally with the Coalition to end the war. Diego Salamanca, perennial Communist Party candidate has announced his intention to run now that he has lost his post as Governor of Lanier. The restaurant baron has declared he would work to reduce J Andres nuclear arms, but would not compromise J Andres security in doing so. The Nationalist Party is running Tobias Bethesda, former single-term governor of Providence. Bethesda is a grandson of Mickey Bethesda, the former long time Foreign Affairs Minister. Although Bethesda has significant name recognition, his selection is largely seen as the Nationalist endorsement of Charlotte Laurent. The Nationalists will be expected to compete with the Anchor party for numerous seats in the Commune; however, it is likely the party heads have agreed to defend the Presidency from the minor parties.

This will be the first general election in which the Labor Party will play a major role, and pundits disagree on how many seats they may potentially take in the Commune. The Anchor Party currently enjoys a plurality in the Commune, but with four parties contesting seats rather than three, it is not expected to maintain it. Most projections show the Communist Party being hurt most by the introduction of the Labor Party, but as the 2082 gubernatorial elections showed, that isn't the only factor.

DEADLINE PASSES -- WORLD STILL EXISTS

review-barnes-90722_183396c.jpg

ENDOR CUIDAD -- On June 30th, citizens across J Andres and the world retreated to their basements and bomb shelters, and waited for the world to end. Supermarkets were mobbed with those buying nonperishables and batteries. On July 1st, everyone breathed a sigh of relief but stayed in their shelters. As they days ticked on, more and more people braved the sunlight and resumed life above ground.

Here we are, five days after the scheduled end of the world, and it's still here.

Now the real question being asked across the internet is: what just happened? Let me tell you in this little column, I like to call Winners and Losers.

Winner: J Andres. After years as a second-rate power in North America, J Andres asserted its power. The big boys in the school yard told us what to do, we didn't listen, and there were no repercussions.

Loser: Coalition for a Better America. Sure, they've still got the military might to potentially conquer the continent, but their power projection is waning. They will need to actually exert their force through actions, for now the world knows their words are hollow.

Winner: Charlotte Laurent. Laurent's approval ratings were dropping like a rock prior to the deadline, and now that her gamble to retain the nuclear weapons has succeeded, she is getting all the credit. It is very likely she will easily win her third term in office.

Loser: Ernest Barnes. The meteoric rise of the Labor Party star has come to a halt as a result of Laurent's success. There may still be a large Labor Party gain in the Commune, but the Governor of Rossingol may have set his sights a little too high with his Presidential run.

Being alive is always great news; however, don't expect the Coalition to sit idly by after being declared the loser of this scenario. They will attempt to flaunt their force, and when they do, J Andres better be willing to do something about it.

LAURENT REELECTED, ANCHOR AND NATIONALIST PARTY FORM COALITION GOVERNMENT

image-986745.JPG

Labor party leader, Ronald Hare, now presides over the second-largest party in the Commune, and due to the Anchor-Nationalist Coalition, will lead the opposition

ENDOR CUIDAD -- Charlotte Laurent rode the wave of optimism all the way to victory. Although her approval ratings plummeted mid-year with the threat of nuclear annihilation, everyone stood firmly by the government's side when their gamble paid off. She joins both of her immediate predecessors, Evan McDowell and Emily Gibbons, in succeeding in being elected to three terms. "The people of J Andres has confirmed we are on the right track," she said in her acceptance speech. "We will be victorious in this war, and we will restore order to the continent once again!"

The election results are not what would be typically expected of an incumbent president who lead the nation to war for the past 3.5 years, but Laurent did manage to secure 51% of the vote. A plurality could not be achieved in the Commune, where the Anchor party and the Nationalist party were forced to form a coalition. Together they combine for 57% of the seats. The Labor party came in second, ahead of the Nationalist party, with 21%. The true surprise of the night was the success of the minor parties. You have to go back to the 2056 election to find more than three parties win seats in the Commune: 19 for the National Liberation Party and 9 for the Christian Democrats. After nearly thirty years, the National Liberation Party has made a comeback, winning 19 seats yet again. The Knights of Cromwell won also won an impressive 37 seats. With four major parties and other minor parties succeeding in elections, could this mark the beginning of a new era in J Andres politics? Time will tell the true strength of the Labor party: is a a brief, bright flame, or do they have a true constituency?

International support for Laurent's victory was strong among the allies, although the Coalition denounced her victory. "The people of J Andres deserve far better than Charlotte Laurent," said President Bronson of the Commonwealth.

With the elections over the people of J Andres have given Laurent a nod of approval. Now, rightly so, we hope the new government focuses their energy towards the war, and bringing it to a swift and decisive end.

TIKAL SURRENDERS; HIGH PRINCE FIDEL CAPTURED

130x150fidelfrancisco.png

Fidel Francisco, former High Prince of Tikal

TIKAL CITY -- The Principality of Tikal is no more. Earlier today, General Ortega and Prime Minister Lindo announced their intention to surrender to the Mexican forces. Mexican troops have been attacking the capital for more than three months, at heavy cost to their own forces. This result was long overdue, with most of Tikal captured by the end of the first year of the war. Economically, Tikal has had a rough time adjusting to its diminished resources and it was simply a matter of time before the capital surrendered. Tikal may have stood a better chance if their air force was on par with that of Mexico. Early skirmishes in the sky above Tikal City began in October and Mexico easily won the superiority battle. Winning the air space allowed them to escort their forces and air drop supplies.

High Prince Fidel, the revolutionary who founded Tikal in 2058 has been captured and is in transit to Mexico City where he will be tried for war crimes related not only to the current conflict, but for his actions during the Tikali revolution 27 years ago. The trial is expected to be quick, and considering it will be in Mexico, he is almost guaranteed to be found guilty. The true question will be the sentencing. Mexico is phrasing the Tikal surrender as "The Reunification of  Mexico," although it will be difficult to win the hearts and minds of the former Tikal citizens if they execute their beloved High Prince.

FIDEL EXECUTED; TIKALI NAVY YET TO SURRENDER

us6_large.jpg

File photo of a Tikal ballistic missile submarine

MEXICO CITY -- High Prince Fidel was executed this morning, bringing the Tikal era in Mexico to a close. The Mexican Reunification has went smoothly thus far. Many Tikali citizens were tired of the war and do not seem to be protesting the current Mexican occupation. Parliamentary elections in the Tikal regions are expected to be set for the end of March which will fully integrate Tikal back within the Republic of Mexico.

A current cause of contention between Mexico and the existing Tikal government is the failure of the Tikal Navy to surrender. General Ortega surrendered the army without incident four days ago, and Prime Minister Lindo has ordered the Tikal Navy to return to port and surrender; however, this has not occurred. The majority of the Tikal Navy was already with the Allied Atlantic fleet at the time of the surrender, and it is believed the rest of the Tikali ships are en route. The Republic of Mexico is particularly worried about the ballistic missile submarines, of which Tikal had four. J Andres citizens will remember the bombing of Providence at the hands of a rogue nuclear submarine. That is precisely the type of event Mexico is trying to avoid.

APPROXIMATELY 40 MILES SOUTH OF CUBA, ATLANTIC OCEAN -- ALLIED FLEET COMMAND

Victor Davis dreamed of home often, but New Quebec was a long way from here. He couldn't complain much about his two years at sea though. The warm weather of the Caribbean trumped the brutal winters of Bangor, but it didn't mean he didn't wish to see his family. With the Tikali surrender months earlier, sometimes he wondered why everyone was still at war anyway. Was it still appropriate to call it the Grand Mexican War if North Mexico had already defeated South Mexico?

The battle station alarm sounded and Victor got up and hustled aft to the engine room.

------

"Is that what I think it is?" asked Admiral Thompson. He looked around the room at the men and women assembled before him. They all stared blankly at the digital screen in the middle of the bridge.

"Still confirming, but it does line up," someone stated from the corner of the room. The radio man had a large headset on, with one of the ear pieces off so he could hear the conversation in the room.

A woman scurried about the digital display, "The launch site is about an hour from the last known location of one of their subs."

"Do we know the location of the other three?" the Admiral asked.

"We do now!" shouted the radio man, frantically pushing buttons on the screen in front of him. "On your display in a few seconds."

Three seconds later, the Admiral's heart sunk in his chest as three more launch sites appeared. "Alert Albany right away," He walked closer to the display and leaned on the edge. "How long ago was this?"

"The first one launched two minutes ago, the others about 45 seconds," someone answered.

"Scramble the jets. Notify the other Governments. Order all subs to dive." The Admiral said, a grimace on his face. Small dotted lines slowly traced the trajectories of the launched missiles. It was no surprise that they were headed towards North Mexico. The Admiral wasn't worried about these dotted lines.

He was worried about the next ones.

PROVIDENCE, J ANDRES

Charlotte Laurent casually rotated her left wrist. After a few moments she looked down. 8:48, she said to herself. She looked back at the baseball field. It was the national high school baseball championship. She had thrown the first pitch hours ago, but of course, baseball has a way of stretching itself out to take ungodly amounts of time. One of her assistants was behind her, "Is there no provision to end the game after a certain number of innings?"

He shook his head, "Not in the playoffs, Madam."

She turned back to face forward. This is ridiculous, she thought to herself.

In unison, many of her secret service agents touched their ears, listening to some message unknown. Immediately they all turned to face her. Laurent frowned.

"Madam President, come with us," they said, ushering her out of her seat.

"Gladly," she said, standing up to stretch. She was glad for their to be any sort of important information that required her to leave this dreadful game. Once they were out of the stands in the underbelly of the stadium she asked, "What's going on?"

"We need to move you to a secure location," he said. "There are reports of the Tikali subs surfacing and launching missiles."

Laurent's face turned white as he brisk pace quickened.

The agent continued, "We have a helicopter arriving momentarily."

FORT FARNUM, J ANDRES

Minister Malvern paced the room repeatedly.

"The President is not in communication, sir. Time is running out for us to make a decision."

"Protocol states we wait for her orders," he said calmly, continuing to pace.

"We don't have that kind of time. We have confirmed launches in the Commonwealth and Mexico. No word on targets yet but I think it's safe to assume some are headed this way."

Malvern stopped and stared at the nation's top generals. "I AM NOT ENDING THE WORLD TODAY!" he screamed.

The room went silent as the generals looked at each other. "Sir, our world has already ended. We need to make sure theirs does as well. That's the assured part of mutually assured destruction."

Minister Malvern looked around the room, and thought of his son, serving on ground in Danbury, and his wife and other children in Rossingol. He nodded his head and the generals scattered, off to execute their orders.

HELICOPTER EN ROUTE TO ENDOR CUIDAD

The helicopter banked sharply and began to descend.

Laurent looked up, but before she could ask the question, one of the agents answered. "There isn't time to make it to the capital. There is a treasury building in Johnston with an underground vault. We are headed there now."

"How long do we have?" she asked.

The agent looked at the overhead clock, and then back at the President, "Seven minutes."

TS OAXACA, TIKAL SUBMARINE, TWENTY MILES EAST OF MIAMI

Captain Barraza sat on the deck of his submarine. The fireworks were about to begin. Some may argue he was crazed, that the people of Tikal could have lived peacefully under the Mexican government and the end of the war would be a good thing. Captain Barraza was not one of those people. Tikal had fought a war of independence to rid themselves of Mexican rule because it wasn't possible. All the fools who thought so were too young to know the first war.

Even while Tikal was independent, Mexico was still the aggressor. Mexico incited economic collapse in the Navajo Union and the SSR formed its in place. Then they strong armed the Caribou Federation opening the door for the NSR. Then in January, the surrender of Tikal and execution of High Prince Fidel. It was inevitable. Mexico together with its Commonwealth and Californian allies sought continental domination. Captain Barraza was not going to let that happen. He would not let the Coalition claim victory. That was why he ordered the strike.

Yes, people in Tikal would die in retaliatory strikes, but the leaders of Mexico would pay. If the Mexican government managed to survive the blasts, they would not survive the riots, for the people would be angry, and angry citizens are the strongest force in the world.

A bright light flickered in the distance. It was too far away to be Miami. All of his own missiles were aimed in Mexican targets. He didn't know when the missile to hit Miami would arrive, but that was part of the fun. He stood up and leaned against the sail, it had to be soon.

And then, there it was. An intensely bright light, causing the Captain to cover his eyes, followed by a little mushroom cloud rising high into the sky. The Captain smiled as he began to whistle the Tikali national anthem.
