Ukraine uprising

It started out small at first, random bombings within Russian, Belarusian or Romanian territories in the Ukraine. But over time it had become a problem.

Being broadcasted over several radio and television stations, an unknown group had made it's voice heard.

"Hello citizens of Ukraine, I am Dimitri Makarov. Just like you i was born to this country and belong to this land. My home was Kiev prior to it's eradication by foreign powers. Our home is full of this filth, and everyday we lose more and more to them the Romanian, the Russian, Belarusian it doesn't matter all strangers taking what is ours. I ask all of you to do your duty to the homeland and fight this disease. Your country calls for you, it weeps for you and you owe it to fight for it's freedom. As for the foreign dogs who watch or listen to this, you will suffer greatly for invading this country and dividing it up amongst yourselves like conquering warlords. We shall remove you, and wall our borders with your dead"

Hours after the broadcast a series of bombings and ambushes on Russian, Belarusian and Romanian forces were launched. Hit and run tactics were employed by several armed men and women the area unclaimed by any nation was now being run by a large army of militia ransacking old Ukrainian military bases and foreign posts for supplies. War had come to Ukraine.

The small-scale bombings in several buildings in the cities of Donetsk and Lugansk immediately attracted the attention of the Russian authorities, and the newly-created NKVN (People's Commissariat for Internal Oversight) was dispatched to investigate the apparently random bombings across the Donbass Oblast. After considerable effort, several of the perpetrators were arrested and interrogated in top-secret 'black cells'. After brutal torture, the victims quickly confessed to an Ukrainian nationalist plot to wrest the Donbass from Russia; they were disposed of afterwards.

The speech by Dmitri Makarov several hours later collaborated the confessions, and the secret police prepared to deal with any pro-Ukrainian resurgence. Even so, despite their best efforts, several car-bombings and hit-and-run attacks on Russian police headquarters and military bases across the Donbass occurred, with some casualties.

Incensed by its failure to prevent the attacks from occurring in the first place, the NKVN responded by sealing off the border with the Ukraine, placing border guards on "shoot-to-kill" orders, imposing localized state of emergencies in selected areas, and mobilizing the local police. Heavily-armed "special detachments" consisting of Internal troopers, Revolutionary Guardsmen, Druzhina militiamen, and Komsomol members were organized and dispatched to root out the Ukrainian insurrectionists with extreme prejudice. Army troopers would participate in some cases.

To make it difficult for the insurrectionists to operate in the Donbass countryside, special checkpoints would be established at all roads leading into the major cities and towns; satellite blinders and communication jamming equipment would be utilized to great effect, and so were UAVs and reconnaissance aircraft.

The Ukrainian uprising came as quite a surprise. The protectorate had usually been docile, and the sudden wave of violence was more characteristic of Poland. Indeed, the bombings in Belarus had been blamed on Polish independence groups.

Many of the Ukrainian attacks on Belorussian forces in the interior of the country would be quite successful. These areas had long been manned by not soldiers, but OMON troops, who were for the most part there to provide law and order, and were lightly armed. However, areas near the Russian border were more heavily fortified. Militants who made the mistake of attacking the army forces stationed in these areas would quickly find themselves faced by heavily armed troops backed by tanks, IFVs, and other armored vehicles and artillery pieces.

When news came in that the Ukrainian militias were ransacking Ukrainian stockpiles for weapons, the government would react as quickly as possible. Dozens of Spetsnaz teams would be loaded up in helicopters and sent to take control of the stockpiles until the rest of the military could join them. Stockpiles that couldn't be secured for whatever reason would be destroyed. This would be done through airstrikes carried out by Belorussian Su-30 fighters. While they wouldn't be able to wipe out everything, it was hoped that a good chunk of the military equipment could be rendered useless.

Elsewhere in the air, the government would do what every good dictatorship did: Send in the assault helicopters. Mi-24 helicopters would be dispatched to the locations of the Ukrainian hit-and-run raids, in the hopes of destroying at least some of the rebels before they escaped. However, this move would most likely turn into an exercise in futility. The Ukraine was a vast piece of territory, and it would be difficult for the Belorussian helicopters to arrive before the Ukrainians fled the battle.

On the intelligence front, the KGB would pay visits to those suspected of assisting the uprising or being related to someone involved.

Across the Ukraine, Belarus, and Poland, Belorussian forces would move to a state of DEFCON 3. The government wasn't willing to take any chances.

In Minsk, the President would now have the unpleasant task of responding publicly to the incidents. The attacks had shaken Belorussian society to the core. Many Belorussians had long viewed the Ukrainian people as comrades, if not brothers. To find that they had been so brutally attacked by one of their oldest allies had a devastating effect on the moral of civilians and soldiers alike.

Public

"Good evening

Today, a number of Ukrainian terrorist groups have launched a series of attacks against both military and civilian targets in the Ukraine and in Belarus itself. These acts of murder were intended to frighten our nation into abandoning the Ukrainian people and to relinquish our duties as the protectors of the Ukraine. They have failed.

These attacks can shake the foundations of our buildings, but they cannot shake our resolve. We will continue our task of protecting the Ukrainian people. To this end, I have ordered the military to implement an emergency response plan. Our army is powerful, and it is prepared.

Our first precaution is to tend to our wounded, and to ensure the safety of civilians who are trapped in what have now become combat zones.

The functions of our government will continue uninterrupted.

Our financial institutions remain strong and open for business.

The search is underway to find those who directed these acts of murder. I've directed the full resources of our intelligence services to hunt down and to bring to justice those who took part in these attacks. We will make no distinction between these terrorists and those who give them aid.

To the Ukrainian people, I now speak to you directly. The Belorussian and Ukrainian people have stood side by side since the Great Collapse, and will continue to stand side by side till the ends of time. Our actions are not to be interpreted as attacks on the Ukrainian people, many of whom share our grief at these attacks. These people who attempt to lay claims to your lands are an insult to the great regimes of Premier Svetlana, President Robert, Hetman Malinovsky, and the many others who governed over you with justice and wisdom. If we allow our friendship to be torn to pieces by these fascists, we will face the greatest wave of evil since the rise of Poland. If we stand united, we can crush these terrorists, and climb to ever greater heights.

This is a day in which Belorussians and Ukrainians from all walks of life unite in our resolve for justice for the dead, and peace for the living. We have stood great enemies before, and we shall do so again."

Russia had proved to be a tougher opponent than expected, isolated cells in the country were ordered to probe and launch regular raids on the checkpoints. Unarmed agents would attempt to slip into Russian territory and receive pipe bombs from drop off points detonating them near police stations, military personnel and even schools. The donbass region became a dangerous warzone. A reward to shoot down Russian uav aircraft was pushed heavily by the rebels to get Ukrainians not involved incentive to join.

The success on Belarus meant the rebels would launch more attacks on Belarusian Ukraine. Armed with ak47s, Rpg7, hunting rifles and homemade explosives they sought to slaughter as many Belarusian troops as possible.

"Der Ruhr Arbeiterrat fully supports the workers, peasants and soldiers of Russia in their struggle against the counter-revolutionary movement in Ukraine. While it is a necessity for socialist republics to grant independence to ethnic and cultural minorities who are genuinely seeking self-determination the forces now rising up in Ukraine are a reactionary, nationalist force assaulting the proletariat of Russia by means of terror and in the process undermining the global revolution of the working class. We encourage the proletariate of Russia to destroy this force of terror within their borders." - The Executive Committee of the Ruhr Arbeiterrat

Slowly but surely, Belorussian forces would shake off their initial surprise and begin to re-organize. The concentration of troops near the Russian border was no longer viable, and Belorussian units would move to take control of areas across the region, not just in the east. This would allow them to respond to future attacks with greater speed.

15 Mi-24 assault helicopters would also be moved to Ukrainian airbases, in order to provide speedier air support. Efforts would continue to take control of or to destroy arms stockpiles in the country. This movement would also be expanded to former Soviet stockpiles locates in the country.

Rebel forces have established their base of operations in Cherkasy, 14,000 Ukraine fighters are being sent to engage Russian forces using everything from technicals to confiscated news helicopters being used to quickly run troops in and out of the area. To make up for Russian jamming devices a series of communication posts hidden in several Ukraine homes using old land line phones and telegraphs.

Launching raids against well-fortified checkpoints would be a suicidal move, especially with roving "special detachments" roaming the countryside, and which had the mandate to mete out revolutionary justice - shooting down any captured militants in wooded areas. NKVN troopers would proactively engage the militants wherever they appeared, and would actively utilize counterinsurgency tactics to root them out. Whenever things got too much for the secret police to handle, Red Army troops would be called in.

With vigilant NKVN guards manning all border checkpoints, it would be very difficult for anyone to sneak into the Donbass; with fixed security checkpoints established at specific intervals on roads leading into the cities, not to mention roving checkpoints in the countryside, it would be very difficult to enter the major cities and get close to targets such as police stations and schools. And that's not mentioning the extensive informant network the NKVN maintained in the Donbass, as in the rest of Russia. Any suspicious individuals were very likely to be noticed and denounced to the NKVN. Thanks to this network, the NKVN would soon detect the "safe houses" and launch raids against them; their inhabitants would either be shot out of hand or carted off to labor camps. Even so, a couple of police headquarters and a high school would sustain damages, which in turn would prompt the NKVN to tighten internal security.

When Stavka began receiving reports of a large Ukrainian force heading toward the Russian borders, it would place all military bases in border areas on a state of high alert; two full divisions would be mobilized to the border, ready to engage the militants. Any technicals that attempted to cross the border would be engaged by a combination of Stingers, T-99 tanks, and IFVs; the same went for helicopters, which would be dealt with by Stinger missiles as well.

All is fair in war and mutual hatred. Belorussian troops would quietly look the other way as Ukrainian militias went off to slaughter Russian people. The official excuse would be that Belorussian troops were too busy defending other areas of the Ukraine and protecting civilians to do anything.

Belarus would however begin running reconnaissance flights over the rebel bases , in preparation for an assault.

The bombings against Romanians wuld come as quite a drastic shock, given that most of Ukraine was under Romanian administration and not much had been expected after the crackdown to prevent exactly such terrorism. An estimated 42 Romanian administrative staff died in the bombings, as the first bombing wave hit. The Romanian Armed Forces meanwhile took lighter casualties, with around a dozen dead and fifteen wounded, as checpoints had come under attack, a more easy target than bases.

The sudden outburst of violence was shocking to the landed nobility, though, it was hardly surprising to Constante and her inner circle, who had feared such could happen. Romanian repression had been extreme and the country had been systematically impoverished by exploiting it for profit. The Ukrainians either defended themselves, or they would cease to exist. Of course, for people like Constante, the latter was the preferable option, and indeed, the upcoming struggle to her was one thing most of all - a struggle to once and for all break the Ukraine. In this sense, it was seen as quite conveniant, that the Ukraine had risen up, as it gave a good pretense to escalate the situation and push for harsher measures.

The Romanians quickly made sure that their bases were covered, especially Ozerne Ar Base, home to many of the nation's strategic bombers, Sevastopol, where parts of the fleet had been stationed and bases in Transnistria, where it was hoped to be less problematic. Militia brigades would guard these bases, which were of utmost importance for the Romanian military. Kiev also was quickly secured, as it was the headquarters of the regional Romanian Field Army, which had been tasked with guarding the protectorate. For the moment, these would be the strongholds, from which the Romanian military sought to wage its war effort against the Ukrainians. Indeed, from almost the get-go, the whole conflict internally was not dubbed rebellion, but a war, the perpetrators was not some small group of rebels, but Ukrainians at large.

As a first measure in the struggle against the rebels, the borders between Romania proper and Ukraine would be sealed, so as to prevent the conflict from swapping across the Dniester River. Romanian Su-35 aircraft would be launched from Basarabian air bases to keep the sky clear and Ukrainians down. Armed with a mixed air-to-air and air-to-ground loadout, the Su-35s were reconnaissance, close-air support and also intimidation at once. Army units from Kiev would cautiously try to secure the surrounding areas, with small groups of infantry, centered around one to three TAB-77 armoured personal carriers. Given the Ukrainians weren't supposed to be fielding much heavy equipment, these units were expected to be armed quite adequately to defend themselves against direct assaults. To start the campaign against the Ukrainians, the Kiev oblast was to be taken and secured, so secure foothold was there. For this purpose, units tried secure larger settlements, before breaking the territory controlled up into smaller districts and setting up checkpoints inbetween, in order to start systematically raiding one after the other with massed force.

Behind the fronts meanwhile, the Romanian intelligence contacted Russian and Byelorussian counterparts, given it might be benefitial to cooperate on the matter.

The rebel attack on the Russian forces turned into a bloodbath, of the 14,000 sent 3,452 came back. A disasterous first engagement in the open against Russia practically put all cells near the Russian border to fall back into central Ukraine. In retaliation several road bombs and even land mines from the old Ukrainian army were placed on the roads to catch Russians or unlucky citizens traveling in eastern Ukraine going into the central mainland.

Feeling Belarus is a weak point, makarov ordered 2,500 insurgents to begin ambushing Belarusian troops coming in through the north believing they would assist Russian forces against the offensive. Surprisingly however, no Belarusians crossed the border explaining perhaps why anyone survived the slaughter.

Kiev was the prized jewel in this conflict and Romania was in the way, makarov ordered 10,000 rebels to begin a series of viscous raids and ambushes against Romanian forces camped around the city. Gun fire would rattle constantly alerting locals that war had returned to the city. The objective was to find any of at all weaknesses the Romanians had in their defense of the city. Makarov wanted to make his play there, taking the capital would be essential to breaking the coalition and establishing his new Ukrainian state.

Belorussian troops would come in from the north. Just not until after the Ukrainian forces began falling back. Belorussian forces backed by tanks, IFVs, and assault helicopters would launch an assault south with the objective of destroying the surviving Ukrainian force.

Belorussian jets would also begin heavily bombing the Ukrainians.

With the Ukraine force destroyed after the Belarusian attack, makarov decided it was time to turn up the stakes. Aerial bombardments had only given the rebellion more support from the locals and taking advantage of the situation the rebels began training more troops tontheir cause. Pockets of insurgents would ambush the Belarusian forces in the north whenever the opportunity presented itself.

With the rebels out of bonbass the Ukrainians prepared defenses along Russian controlled Ukraine including more mines, trip wire bombs and ambush points. Sharpshooters were aligned to kill as many Russian troops as possible interrupting patrols and stressing the Russian soldiers however they could.

Burst transmissions alerted Romny of an approaching Belarusian force, orders from high command are to hold the city at all costs. 7,000 of the northern army has been withdrawn to the city the rest are engaged with operations against Russia or in a position where they're not able to go to the town's defense.

Trench lines were dug around the town's outer edge, ammo dumps placed strategically in the main square for troops to resupply and withdraw to. All vehicles were commandeered to block major streets and machine gun nests were placed over open streets where enemy troops would try to flank the blockades. 450 rebels would be placed on roof tops with Rpgs and heavy machine guns to try and fight off enemy aircraft and rain hell on ground forces. Everything in place to turn the small town into a living hell.
