The call of elections had once more rang through the streets and homes of Venice once again, for too long had the city slumbered away in quiet solitude while the rest of the world had carried on without them. Though the basic services and necessities of life had been maintained the once great city state had fallen into the history books and been diminished. Its once mighty trading empire had dissolved and collapsed, the government nothing but a few administrators making sure that only that which was required was maintained and the people lived their lives with little interest in themselves, their heritage and their futures.

 

All of this changed when one day a man stepped forward, a man disgruntled with the boredom and slothfulness of his daily life. He had ambition and passion and he would use these to bring the name of Venice out of the history books where it lay and make its mark on the world. This man was Luca Zaia, once a government administrator he now called on his memories and experiences of his old skills to prepare his campaign speeches.

 

Luca began by touring the city limits, holding one man rallies where he called on the crowds of people to stop and hear what he had to say. He called on them to turn away from a life of boredom and repetitiveness and to make something of themselves and their city. Of course many just ignored him or even called for him to be silent but Mr Zaia would not be silenced, again and again he would make his speeches and soon a handful of citizens listened to what he said and began to believe in his words. These people would join with Mr Zaia in spreading his message and soon this one man mission became a small political movement that continued to grow everyday.

 

Soon enough it became impossible to not see and hear the change in the people of Venice, where once had been general acceptance there was now a strong desire for change, for growth. When Luca Zaia asked for volunteers to sign his petition calling for the city administrators to hold elections for a new government he found almost two thirds of the total city's population had signed it in support. Faced with such obvious public approval and secretly glad to finally be able to hand over responsibility of the city to someone else the administrators readily agreed and in short order announced that elections for a new government were to be carried out within the month. All parties wishing to take part had to have their information handed in by two weeks.

 

Luca went away to his party's headquarters and with his supporters drafted a short information sheet about what they were calling the Progressive Party of Venice or PPV for short. When Luca handed this in to the administrators in person he had expected that there would be one or two other parties standing against his at the least. Instead he was shocked to find his was the lone party and so only his party was available to be voted for when the election came.    

 

As such when the election came the PPV won being the only party standing, however, the votes were still counted and collected fairly to ensure the whole election process was legal. In total about seventy three percent of the total population voted which showed that a vast majority of the city's populace supported Mr Zaia and the Progressive Party of Venice. Luca Zaia was declared the new President of Venice as head of the ruling party of the PPV. These results would be realised across the city and on international news airwaves and internet sites allowing the world to know of the new changes within the city of Venice. With at least some of his ambitions realised Mr Zaia would now pour his focus and efforts into rebuilding Venice back to the days of glory.

Venice would like to thank everyone who has contacted us to grant us recognition and to give us your well wishes. As a place that has so recently been relegated to being  almost forgotten from history it is welcoming to know that so many are ready and willing to interact with us. As for establishing amicable relations the city of Venice is open to all, a free port if you will. As long as one does not bring distress to our citizens or other visitors or attempt to hide from hostile intentions inside our city then they are welcome to stay and visit. 

 

As for our current intentions we have two main priorities the first is to carry out repair and maintenance work on the city itself to return the city to its full glory. Secondly we hope to reestablish the great trading fleets that Venice used to possess. To that effort we are currently looking to purchase a number of merchant vessels of multiple varieties if any nation or company is willing to sell some to us then please send your offers.

Even with the President out of the city on a state visit to Carthage work would continue as he had set forth, lumber, concrete and other such building materials would be bought from neighboring nations and used on repair and upgrading projects through out the city. The first areas to receive attention would be the most run down and decrepit sections of the city where flooding was a real and dangerous problem, to counter this construction teams using diving suits and underwater construction gear would begin shoring up and strengthening the supports of the buildings in these worst areas. Buildings would be raised and supported and any and all water damage would be removed and replaced and measures put in place to protect them from further such problems.

 

Of course in such run down areas it would be impossible not to find a criminal element and many smugglers, thieves, gangs and other such ruffians called these areas of the city their home and they did not appreciate all this new found attention. With a city police force barely able to cope with the problem as they stood the decision was made to outfit and create an armed force for civil and international operations. Called the Venetian Guard these men and women would serve as both soldiers and police force, keeping order at home in Venice and responding to any incidents effecting Venice property and people abroad. These guardsmen would be given the best equipment and training that Venice had though plans were already being looked at for getting equipment from other more advanced countries. A messages was sent to the President to advise him to ask Carthage about this.

The Venetian government would be contacted by Alvonia with an offer - they would not be in want of materials or knowledge, for Krupp and Schlaich Bergermann & Partner offered technical expertise, materials, and of course bids to assist the Venetian state in rebuilding areas devastated by the Great Collapse, all for a reduced price given Venice's relative youth in world affairs.

The offer would be meet by much joy and celebration by the Venetian government who would respond most enthusiastically to the offer from Alvonia. Along with the usual reply of acceptance the Alvonian government would find a bottle of the finest Venetian wine as a small thank you. Included would also be instructions for the best way to reach Venice which without a functioning airport in the city would be either by ship or by landing on the Italian mainland and transferring any supplies and people by coastal ship.

Any materials necessary would be transferred from Alvonia directly from highways that came from Südtirol-Trentino. The wine would be met greatly appreciated, in response a case of the finest Bavarian draft beer would be sent to the Venetian government.

With the supply of materials arriving from Alvonia and the stepped up and gradually improving work of the Venetian Guard the ruined and run down sections of the city began to be restored in strength and stability. As homes were rebuilt citizens flocked to them, many returning to old neighbors they had lived in as children and security became less and less of a worry as the criminal elements in the city began to flee like rats leaving a sinking ship. Along with citizens came businesses and soon the government found that their money surplus was rising and rising and rather than take any for their own benefits they invested it back into the city to improve services and other areas of work.

 

A small amount was diverted however, to fund a government run agricultural project in the Italian lands on the mainland. Here current and new ways would be studied and used to work at producing a food surplus to feed the growing population and to store some way for emergencies at home or abroad if another country should be hit by disaster.

 

In other areas the merchant fleet of the Venetian state continued to grow with a further three cargo vessels, one for perishable produce and two for bulk cargo being added to the fleet. These ships would be run by the Venetian government as were all cargo vessels of the Venice merchant navy. Their price rates for carrying cargo would be publicly available to all and anyone wishing to hire them only had to contact the Venetian government to arrange repayment and cargo pickup and drop off.
