Golden Roman Party (30 seats) - The Golden Romans are an Italian national populist party. They seek the reinstatement of Roma as the capital of the Italian state, which they wish to rename as Italy once again. They believe that Milan, as the chief successor state of the Italian Republic, carries the legacy of Rome itself on its shoulders, and is thereby obligated to ensure the unification of the Italian lands. There are two factions within the party; one of which champions republicanism, while the other wishes to restore the Kingdom of old. The republican faction is generally the milder of the two, and is definitely the largest.

Milan First Party (132 seats) - The Milan First Party is a party that draws most of its support from the north of the country, and has been formed as a patriotic reaction to the Golden Roman adoption of pan-Italian nationalism. It champions individual rights and decentralized government, which includes a more laissez-faire attitude than the Golden Romans. They see the rest of Italy as a burden and think that the Milanese people were served well by the fall of the old Republic and its replacement with a smaller, more efficient & localized Milanese Republic.

Libertarian Democratic Party (204 seats) - The Libertarian Democrats are a large, centrist party which champions the cause of social democracy. They agree with the pan-peninsular attitude of the Golden Romans, but also agree with the laissez-faire capitalism of the Milan First Party. They are patriotic to a degree, but less so than either of the aforementioned parties, and tend to draw younger voters in as well.

Green Italy Party (66 seats) - The Green Italy Party are perhaps the most cosmopolitan of the political parties of Milan, and also the fastest growing. They embrace globalism as a natural extension of their environmentalist concerns, and are often at odds with their anthropocentric rivals over lucrative-but-harmful development projects. They are considered by many to be a moderate-left bridge between the centrist LDP and the socialists of the ISP.

Italian Socialist Party (168 seats) - The Italian Socialist Party is the unified successor of the Italian Communist Party of old, which historically did very well in almost all of the provinces of the Milanese state. Unchecked by having lost the much more conservative south, they've seen a massive rise in electoral success on the national level. With Party leadership well aware of the reasons for their climb, they are against the reunification of Italy and have brokered a timid relationship across the aisle with the Milan First Party, who has also scored big gains at the national level.[/spoiler]

The Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige, consisting of the autonomous regions of Trentino and South Tirol, have agreed to rejoin the Republic under its new Milanese government. It is widely being taken as a defensive move against attempts by the Venetians to dominate the region. Troops from Milan have been seen entering Trentino, and management is adopting new codes of conduct in line with those of the new Lombard authorities. This is seen as a good omen for the new government, who had lost a direct land tie into the Alvonian state to the north with the secessions. Experts caution, however, to take this as a sign of Italian reunification; the new Doge of Venice is unlikely to want to give up power, and the Neopolitans are as unwilling to rejoin the Union as the Milanese are to welcome them back.

Protests have erupted in Rome! Already peeved by the annexation of the Vatican into the Milanese state as a privately-owned Church territory, the continuing Aidennist presence in urban areas along with one of their strange temples has sparked fury amongst Catholics.

"I say by golly, we'll hang th'Doge if he don't kick 'em out a ear!" said one boy of an immigrant family, before burning an effigy of a generalized Aidennist.

However, the country's center and left have been supporting the government. One man argued; "Look, the Church still owns its land, it just can't have its own army. I don't get what they're so angry about. If anything, they should be giving it back and saying that we're not obligated to help them if they get bombed."

This just in: we've just heard that the Doge is preparing a speech to address the Milanese public. Stay tuned!

Rome, Republican Union of Milan

We're back, and here's Doge Hereno d'Bologne:

"Milan, fear not, for the Pope has pledged his loyalty to the Republic. With the Vatican as part of Milan, the Church organization has been given full ownership over all territories within the city. Additionally, we will be allowing them to keep their own army of Milanese citizens, as part of the Army of Milan. They will appoint their own general, but be financed, trained, and armed by the state of Milan.

Additionally, I have signed an executive order allowing all citizens to raise their own private armies, provided they are integrated as part of the state army. The state will maintain its own army, and the Republican Guard unit has been put under control of the sitting Doge, who is at that time myself. It will remain part of the Army of Milan, but whomever is the sitting Doge will be assigned its generalship. The Doge will be allowed to handpick, if necessary, among eligible volunteers to be assigned into the Republican Guard, which will become the special forces subdivision of the Milanese military complex. As such, it has been lowered to just 100,000 elite troops, with the rest being reassigned under the 590,000-strong Army of Milan, with 300,000 of those in reserve."

When asked for further explanation, reporters were rudely dismissed and told to "shut the fuck up" as the team began deciding who was to stay awake "on watch" as sleeping bags began to unroll across the lab floor.

Neapolitan Protectorate

The government of Naples has entered into a protectorate agreement with Milan. Its government will be disallowed from raising its own army or entering into foreign relations without Milanese approval. In return, Milan will defend the Neapolitan government from foreign aggression using its own military forces. The area of the protectorate is shown below in purple, while Milan proper is red-orange and the newly-reunified territories of South Tirol and Trentino in blue:

Milan is taking a census of current military equipment in order to clarify the exact capabilities of the Milanese armed forces. Once each piece is accounted for, deficits and weaknesses will be addressed. The process is expected to take several days, if not a week.

Goods and florins flow freely through the territories to destinations in both Alvonia and Milan. The newly-allied nations are sure to reap mutual benefit from continued safe trade. The general population is growing listless, however, at reports of several raids conducted by Venetians across the border into the outskirts of Trentino. Persons in the know say it is likely that a modest military force will be needed to keep the peace until things are settled and Venice is able to sort out its internal issues. To these ends, a modest force of locals was commissioned and turned into a reserve militia of the Army of Milan, and outfitted appropriately. They will be tasked not only with defense and monitoring, but with building new infrastructure. While some was destroyed in the turmoil after the Republic's collapse, new border and defense apparati will be needed along the border with Venice. While not as robust as the significant coastal defenses, it was sure to be more than a match for any small bands of hooligans.

The Milanese DEFCON level was raised to 2 after receiving a request by the Alvonian government to declare war on the Northlands. The Republican Guard, under generalship of the Doge himself, have begun comprehensive, enhanced surveillance of the European continent. Areas of vital importance were the peninsular coastline, the land borders with the Venetian and Neapolitan states, and the Baleares islands. Areas of high importance were the strait of Gibraltar, the Suez Canal, and the islands of Sardinia. Military movements would also be carefully watched. The Milanese military is on alert, and units have been summoned to their barracks.

Large amounts of inter-military communications would be encrypted in AES-256 and funneled through a massive government-run advanced TOR-like network requiring at least four relays before reaching an exit node, all of which are operated in secret by the government, preventing data-gathering through watching exit nodes. Additionally, all communications are programmed by default to delete and overwrite themselves once read and closed, and can only be accessed through inputting the correct randomly-generated 32 character string corresponding to the user into the network log-in, which can only be accessed by a computer which has the program installed on it. This state-of-the-art system would make it all but impossible to intercept communications within or with the Republic. The only way to intercept a communication would be to have stolen the program, spoofed a valid but disconnected machine's ID number, and also have knowledge of a person's private string and use it to access communications before the recipient in their message wallet does. The government of Naples has entered into a protectorate agreement with Milan. Its government will be disallowed from raising its own army or entering into foreign relations without Milanese approval. In return, Milan will defend the Neapolitan government from foreign aggression using its own military forces. The Republican Guard in conjunction with nationalized weapon and chemical companies have secretly commissioned several hundred thousand 155mm artillery shells, each filled with approximately 6.5 lbs of the potent nerve agent VX. It will take months for the order to be complete, due to highly limited production capabilities, in part caused by the secrecy needed for the operation. However, thousands of shells are entering unmarked military warehouses on the outskirts of the capitol, to be used with towed or self-propelled howitzers. The Army of Milan has been rebranded as the Italiano Esercito Repubblicano (IER), or Italian Republican Army. The Doge believes this will help ease tensions within the various regions coming back under control of the whole of the Republic.

With the space program and nuclear armaments shooting missile tech into relative unknowns, it was natural for a technological giant such as the Milanese arms industries to experiment with applying known technologies to situations faced by the Milanese. One such "accident" was the development of a ballistic missile suitable to anti-ship warfare, code-named AB-M01 by the navy. It was to prove a huge boon to the Milanese in their most important historical field of achievement: ruling the seas. Production started just a few days ago, and soon enough the AB-M01 would become a staple of Italian maritime force projection.

Notification was given to Yugoslavia and Alvonia of Milan's intent to peacefully annex the Venetian territories. Once the Yugoslavians had given word that they had removed their peace-keepers, Milanese forces would occupy the area and begin its reintegration into the Italian state.
