Sparta Armed Forces

Spartan Armed Forces represent a large percent of GDP for the Spartan Nation, higher than most countries.  Despite being relatively small in size, Spartan Militarist tradition demands near universal services operating on a three tier system of standing forces, reserves, and national conscription.  Spartans are taught to fight from a very young age.  Physical education is mandatory and necessary to move up grade levels.  Unlike in ages past the physically disabled are not discarded but instead immediately identified in support roles and trained to help the Spartan war machine at the youngest of ages.

Spartan's best and brightest are singled out at a young age to attend the Spartan Academy, an organization dedicated to building up the best for officer training school and moved at an early stage between the Royal General Staff and the Regular Army, Air Force, and Navy. Alternatively many of these are also moved to the Spartan Intelligence services.  Those who show initiative within early years are promoted along non-commissioned officer tracks parellel to their studies, and some of the best are selected for the Spartan Special Operations forces and Air Squadrons.

Spartan Military Culture ruthlessly favors offensive warfare, and believes in seizing initiative from enemy nations at the dawn of each fight.  Its military forces emphasize decision making superiority, agile leadership, speed, and strike in depth as means of defeating much larger nations or groups of nations.  Its military forces are organic joint forces mixing conventional and special operations, which combine kinetic forces to achieve physical damage, and non-kinetic disruptive forces to prevent the coordination of enemy defenses.  This is backed up by superior command, control, communications, computers, combat systems + intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C5+ISR).

Spartan military forces adhere to the belief armies gain experience through warfare.  Through that Sparta offers up its soldiers to nations willing to pay for its services giving new recruits the chance to taste combat and prove their meddle in war.

Sparta declares it is taking the step of protecting a Southern Italian area from foreign domination.  Spartan Forces employed in its military operation shall not be part of a large occupation force, rather it will deny the area to any force attempting to fight its way in.

Operation Aegis:

Spartan Units were ordered to begin initiating its first serious military operation with a deployment to the Southern Italian Peninsula and Island of Sicily.  The Operation was intended not to put Sparta in control of these territories but rather to provide a no go to foreign military forces from operating outside the consultation of the Spartan Nation.

The initial stage of the operation included the positioning of a constellation of space based ISR and NAVSAT sensors over the area, as well as the employment and public announcements of ADIZs starting from the borders of the new Milanese Republic to 12 miles off Malta in circles.  To enforce this combined air patrols of F/A-18 E/F and Growlers as well as F-1 Air Superiority stealth fighters (F-23 air frame with F-35 type sensors/fire controls/integrated stealth coating and F-22s type radars/engines) would be employed, the F-1s maintaining stealthy coverage using their sensor nets to network with the other units in the area.  Complementing them would be four global hawk surveillance drones flowing routine patrol, 2 JSTARS, 4 Mid Air Refuelers, 5 E-2 Hawk Eyes, and 6 P-8 patrol planes.

At sea would be the employment of 4 Amphibious ships landing ashore MAGTAFs, 3 on the Southern Penninsula, 1 on Sicily.  The groups would clear the way and secure for the deployment of surface to air missile batteries and surface to ship missile batteries as well as short range (-1000 kilometers) land attack cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

Surface combatants assigned to the mission would include three of the battleships, three cruisers, eighteen multi-mission frigates, eighteen multi-mission combat ships, three stealthy hepheastus class destroyers, and six artemis class destroyers, along with 1 poseidon and four Kraken class attack submarines.  The carriers would stay guarded heavily on patrols around the Greek penninsula but easily capable of launching craft, and in fact maintaining rotating air patrol and ASW operations.

Dispatch to the Carthaginians:

To Whom it Concerns,

Seeming as though Carthage is sensible in the Med we would like to request your presence with our leadership to discuss the situations of a ever pressing need to expand, often unilaterally, we see this in this region, but also around the world, right down to this neo imperialist japan drive in the far east to the jumping from land grab to land grab in Europe.  This deeply worries us as it means other nations are forced to move towards war in order to secure their national interests.  For us this creates a dangerous situation bordering on the need for preemption.

We would like to propose working together to establish norms to stop such brazen land grabs and perhaps introduce some dialogue before everyone looks to claim left and right.  We would also like to request assistance in stopping what is going on now and holding the line right here.

The Spartan Combined Taskforce for the Hades has announced deployment to the North Sea for diplomatic mission and deterrence patrols in light of the ongoing crises in Europe.  The Hades mission will be to provide a credible deterrent against adventurism, reassure shipping routes in the region, and show friendly nations the flag of Sparta.  Accompanying the Hades will be a guided missile submarine, carrying 152 cruise missiles capable of conducting a surprise attack on any nation which chooses adventurism as a course of action.   The deployment will also include theatre ballistic missile defense capabilities against an adversary that should decide to deploy such weapons.

Spartan High Command is eager to emphasize the Spartan Navy's very presence should serve to deescalate tensions.  Though it remains ready, and its crews eager to fight should war come.

 • 2 weeks later...

With the collapse of the Babylonian Empire, the Spartan Army has moved into Asia Minor, to protect its compatriots in the region.  Soldiers will begin working with local authorities to establish order in the area.  Local authorities will work with Sparta to make the territory first a protectorate and then part of mighty Sparta.

In Anatolia local leaders would form enclaves to begin election of advisers to send to the court of the Spartan King.  The leaders would serve to represent local interests on the King's high council and advise him of matters meeting his concerns.  Meanwhile scouts would be deployed into the regions of the mediterranean levant to scout the situation and establish contacts with local customs.

Southern Italy itself would be now fully integrated with the Spartan Government.

In Sicily the territories too would begin their local elections of representatives to the Spartan King's Court.  The end goal to be to ensure the Island retained as much autonomy as possible, while benefiting from the presence of Spartan military forces, particularly its massive Navy, which would bring commerce to the territory.

OOC:  Southern parts of Italy annexation complete, 2/7 on Anatolia and Sicily.

Hitting the beach heads in Beirut and Aleppo, Spartan Marines began their advance inland following the successful scouting missions.  Their primary objectives would be to secure as many air fields as possible.  Following in behind them with port facilities secured would be 11 Roll-on-Roll Off ships bringing ashore several thousand infantry units to secure the units, while a group of special operations troops would do a HALO jump on Damascus.

At the same time the Anatolian Armored groups would have reached the borders with Iraq and Persia.  Forward recon units would remain camouflagued in the fast inhospitable country, while Global Hawks would provide high altitude surveillance monitoring.

F-23 fighter aircraft would provide around the clock air patrols.

In the mediterranean the Spartan Fleet massed with its expedition North rejoining it along with a contingent sent to the Black Sea, while its Indian Fleet continued drilling, moving towards its joint project with the Novakians around Diego Garcia.

In Italy preparations for completing annexations of the South was now proceeding smoothly as well as in Sicily.  The two areas had given general support to Spartan cause, enthusiastic about the protection and stability the state offered.

I believe Italy is now integrated into me with 3 posts as I picked up from Hereno.

It didn't take a lot of discussions to conclude that the future of the Eastern Mediterranean would directly affect Carthage's ability to act. Added to that the ongoing operations of the Spartan allies it seemed clear there was a need to act more directly. Following the direct orders of the King the Carthaginian Sea Army would begin deploying 15,000 soldiers to Syria's coastline where they were to act in support of Spartan forces. At the same time the Carthaginian Army was to commence the deployment of an additional 30,000 soldiers and accompanying armoured support via Alexandria to Syria.

While these events were occurring a Carrier Strike Group moved into position to support ground operations using its air wings as well as surface-to-surface systems.

In order to ensure the continued stability in the Black Sea, the Romanian Navy would deploy its fleet, together with four marine divisions close at the Northern coastline of Turkey, close to Trabzon. Additionally, five regular divisions would be earmarked to stand in reserve, should it become necessary to act in greater strength.

With local elections completed advisers came to the Court of the King of Sparta from Southern Italy, Anatolia, and Sicily to discuss plan for final integration into Sparta itself.  Meanwhile in Northern Italy rebuilding efforts continued as the political question of what to do with it came up.  Many of the major institutions had been outright obliterated by the nuclear counter attack by the Icelandic forces counter-value strike.

In Damascus and other cities in the Western Middle East slow support was building for a union with the emerging Spartan Kingdom, especially as other armies drove in under the pretext of crusade.  The Spartan Economy would begin a regional program of military Keynesianism to help grow the economy as well as provide relief, with deficit spending being used to make up the difference while central banks kept interest rates low.

Sicily 4/7

Southern Italy 7/7

Military education for the training of fourth into the lethal spartan army began in Sicily and Anatolia as was tradition. The best fighters would be allowed to rise up into the units of the elite spartan military.

In Sicily organized crime families would be routinely raided to be brought to heel under the new spartan regime. Where in Anatolia the radical mosques would be shut down. This would produce some unrest.

In the Middle East areas spartan troops were being greeted popularly by many of the intellectuals as the king gave generous gifts to the operation of these facilities.

In Italy many of the towns nuked had property seized by eminent domain. After compensation had been paid, specialists moved to save what antiquities they could while removing radioactive materials and beginning clean up.

Spartan troops entered the lands of the former Eastern Roman Empire, securing the Dardenells and both sides of the straight.  Many of the Roman traditions would be left largely intact.  Sparta was content to see Byzantium remain as unchanged as possible as it became a focal point for the building the future Spartan Empire.  In the meantime they will be a protectorate.
