Topographic Map of Iceland

General:  Iceland is locted where the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans meet, in the Northwestern Norwegian Sea.  Iceland is the world's 18th largest island and Europe's 2nd.  Iceland has 4970 km's of coastline, most of which is cut with fjords.  Most settlements are on the coast as the center of the island of Iceland is unihabitable mountains, sands, and lava fields.  These areas are known as the Iceland Highlands.

Geology:  Iceland lies on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and a hotspot, making the island extremely geologically active.  Geothermal energy is common, along with potential for hydroelectric power, making Iceland a great candidate for expanding geothermal and hydroelectric energy projects.  The island is home to many geysers and volcanoes.

Climate:  Ice incursions on the coasts are rare, as the North Atlantic Current keeps Iceland generally warmer than areas at the same latitude.

  • Climate Type:  Subpolar Arctic
  • Highest Recorded Temperature:  30.5 °C (86.9 °F)
  • Lowest Recorded Temperature:  −38 °C (−36.4 °F)
