Strategic Island Modernization & Fortification Directive

The Office for Military Affairs has approved this directive, to be led and funded by the Bureau of Military Acquisition with assistance from the Naval, Air, and Island Forces, in light of the uncertainty facing the greater European region. The implementation of this directive, also known as SIMFO, is primarily focused on the Baleares and Madeira, both of which are considered highly strategic integral provinces of the Northlands.

Madeira and the Baleares are the headquarters of the Atlantic and Mediterranean fleets, respectively, and both are responsible in tandem for the protection and oversight of Northlandic commerce in and out of the Strait of Gibraltar and the surrounding Atlantic and Mediterranean areas. The importance of these islands in protecting national interests in the region elevates their strategic importance and has prompted the order to increase their security and permanent defenses.

The updated security plan for the islands details how they should be capable of inflicting heavy losses on any invading force and slow down such an invasion until an appropriate response can be mounted. The Island Forces operates several divisions of soldiers on the island, including rapid response taskforces, and coordinates closely with the other Royal Forces for overall security of the islands.

Additionally, a series of static and mobile defenses have been approved and are currently being constructed to create a layered air defense system. A series of underground bunkers and command networks are to be constructed on the parts of the islands maintained by the military (specifically in the Baleares, large portions of Menorca and Ibiza). Several large gun and missile emplacements are to be constructed overlooking harbor entrances and other important points on the islands including mountain faces and beaches. This would include surface-to-surface missiles at the harbor and surface-to-air missiles elsewhere.

The Island Forces are equipped with Starstreak MANPADS, Avengers, and ADATS anti-air systems for short range air defense on the island. Additionally, dozens of camouflaged S10 (Patriot) and S300 mobile missile systems provide longer range defense. Finally, several S20 (THAAD) systems are located to provide ballistic missile defense.  These systems are to be fully integrated to create a criss-crossing mesh of anti-air defenses on the islands.

In addition to the anti-ship missiles, harbors and other favorable landing locations are to have a mine-readiness status, whereby minesweepers attached to the islands can quickly lay mines to deny enemy landings when necessary. Long range radars are to be constructed, and integrated into the defense system, to both detect enemy ships, planes, and missiles, as well as to direct return fire from the islands.

Territorial Defenses Online

Along with the Baleares and Madeira, the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar would also undergo modernization upon ascendance into the brave, new world. However, the latter two had significantly smaller citizen populations and the priority was on the defense or area denial of these key locations.

The Faroe archipelago was extremely important for the Northlandic Navy, with several naval installations on the islands hosting ships from the North Sea and Atlantic Fleets. This acted as a base of operations from which to patrol the Norwegian Sea in cooperation with the Nordisk Rike as well as around the British Isles, which tended to have ambiguously defined relations with the Northlands. Perhaps most importantly, the Faroes had been part of the Northlands for longer than some of its provinces, and it was seen as a vital link and outpost from which to protect the Northlands in the west.

Gibraltar, on the other hand, acted as the gatekeeper from which the Northlands could oversee and secure traffic between Madeira and the Baleares through the Strait. Once again, this was a key link between the Mediterranean and Atlantic Fleets, and it had a unique geopolitical positions from which the security of the Baleares province could be maintained. Orders were given to expand the naval docks and air station in the territory, in support of the Northlandic Mediterranean and Greek allies. Dredging would be used to increase the area of the territory for these additions, and the Bay of Gibraltar would be a flurry of activity. Locals from Algeciras and La Linea would be hired to augment construction crews.

On both of these territories, preparations would be made for mining of bays and beaches where needed. Additional, similar anti-air and missile defenses like those implemented in Madeira and the Baleares would be put into place. In Gibraltar, parts of the Rock would be used by the government for this task, although environmentalists would be consulted to ensure the well being of the monkey friends that inhabited these areas.

Troops Deployed to Germany

The recent German protests in France had not gone unnoticed by the Northlands. In order to prevent possible spillover of protests, the I and II Corps (100,000) men have been dispatched to German lands to support existing police operations in the region. A disproportionate number of troops would be deployed to the Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate for peacekeeping duties in the region as the situation developed. For now the men would make their presence known, but would not take an active role in overseeing the day-to-day security affairs of the area. It was hoped that this deployment would defuse tensions on the German side of the border

Ground Forces Expanded

Northlands High Command has approved the expansion of the Ground Forces to 620,000 active troops, an increase of 110,000 from current levels. These recruits are currently undergoing training and will be used to supplement forces currently located in the Northlands and Germany. Additionally, there are reports that High Command will be increasing the size of the Naval Forces to ensure the security of the many integral non-continental regions that make up the Northlands proper.

Operation Lighthouse

There would be a noticeable increase in activity on Madeira, the Baleares, and Gibraltar. Task Forces from the Atlantic and Mediterranean fleets would begin preparations to transport several divisions of soldiers by sea. These troops would have a large percentage of Spanish speaking Northlanders relative to standard divisions, with many of the men hailing from the Baleares.

As the ports of these places hummed with activity, several thousand soldiers would also be in Gibraltar, beginning preparations to move north from the peninsula. Special care was to be places on creating a reliable supply train for ease of logistics of the impending operation in the region, and cargo ships and places could be seen stopping in Gibraltar.

Additionally, small amounts of BIO personnel would travel to the Spanish coast to assess the status of the people and local administration in the area.

Operation Reclaimer

While tens of thousands of Northlandic troops were already in Germany for peacekeeping purposes, preparations were made to begin the process of a more lengthy stay in the area. More troops were made ready to deploy from the Northlands, especially to neighboring states of Lower Saxony, Saarland, and the Rhineland.

Operation Lighthouse

In cooperation with local authorities, Northlandic forces from Gibraltar and the Baleares would arrive in the southern coastal regions of Andalusia, Murcia, and Valencia and assume security duties from the local police forces in the areas. French authorities would be notified of the actions and informed that the Northlands' actions would not affect the current situation in northeast Spain.

Along with the soldiers, government officials would arrive to begin the process of integrating the local government, utilities, security, and other administration in line with Northlandic policies. This would be the culmination of several rounds of meetings with local officials from these regions about its future. These meetings would be heavily attended by Balearic Northlanders who were eager to see the Spanish and Catalan people reunite under a single umbrella on the world stage.

While numerous regimes have assumed control over the Iberian peninsula in recent history, Valencia and Andalusia were both regions that still possessed unique cultural identities and posed a unique dilemma to the centralized Northlands state government.

A conclusion was reached with the intent to begin incorporation of Murcia as a province and Andalusia and Valencia as autonomous communities. The 'autonomous community' designation will provide these areas with additional powers which are to be formalized in fueros charters. The communities will be required to pay fewer taxes to the central government and will receive fewer services in return. Additionally, these citizens will be allowed to fulfill their military service obligation by remaining in the Mediterranean region.

Operations Reclaimer

The government has given its intent to begin incorporation of the West Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Lower Saxony, Hamburg, and Bremen states into the Northlands proper. This move is being widely hailed by both Northlands citizens as well as German locals, citing the shared history and culture and the list of failed states that have ruled over the area. The people are eager to return to stable government rule and the Northlands has already given its commitment to igniting and expanding the regional economies.

100,000 Northlands soldiers are moving into the remaining German states of Hesse, Thuringia, Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt to form a German Protectorate under Northlandic supervision. These regions, excluding Vorpommern, would being establishing closer ties to the Northlands.

Protectorates Established

With orders received from High Command, military operations would commence in the following regions:

Azores and Canary Islands

15,000 men have been dispatched to the islands to establish a formal relationship with the Northlands.

Eastern Germany

50,000 men have been given official orders to maintain security in Hesse, Thuringia, Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt at refurbished Northlands military installations across the protectorate. The remaining 50,000 men would be concentrated primarily at the non-Northlands border of this protectorate.

Lower Iberia

An additional 15,000 men are to be dispatched to secure the Faro District along with Melilla and Ceuta, with another 35,000 men being dispatched to support current integration operations in Andalusia.

Northlands Naval Acquisitions

Citing ongoing changes in Northlandic defense policy particularly in light of recent annexation efforts in Europe, High Command has announced the completion of another Amphibious Assault Ship, 6 frigates, and 24 corvettes, with more under construction. Fleet compositions are to be updated accordingly, with many of the corvettes being used to help patrol the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas.

Troops Deployed to Great Britain

With repeated attempts at re-establishing communications with the Empire of Great Britain failed, the Northlands would immediately deploy troops to secure Great Britain, Ireland, and associated islands as a protectorate. A total of 40,000 men would be sent to Great Britain and 20,000 to Ireland. The men would be airlifted to secure major cities and regional centers, with a massive sea operation underway forming a bridge of men and supplied between the Northlands and Great Britain. The former lands of the Empire of Great Britain would be declared a protectorate and under the benevolent protection of the Northlands.

Northlands Declares Crete Protectorate

The collapse of one of the Northlands' greatest allies so unexpectedly came as a complete shock. The treaty with Greece had been upgraded to mutual defense only weeks before and everything had seemed fine. However, with news of upheaval in the region the Northlands has no choice but to act.

The Northlands forces in Crete would be ordered to immediately begin securing the island and await for further backup to assist in maintaining a protectorate status over the island. From Minorca, 2,000 troops would be immediately airlifted under the cover of darkness to Crete, supported by four squadrons of fighter aircraft, as quickly as mechanically possible. They would be dropped onto the island with orders to connect with Northlandic forces currently on the ground as well as to secure administrative regions on the island.

The Mediterranean Fleet, already on standby, would be ordered to move to Crete to assist in operations, in addition to transporting several thousand more marines to secure the formerly Greek land.

Troops Deployments Around the World

With the apparent collapse of Alvonia, the Northlands would dispatch 15,000 men each to Baden-Wurttemberg, Bavaria, and the Czech Republic. These people would be treated as brothers and would be given the greatest degree of autonomy. The Northlandic troops would mainly act to ensure that no other foreign powers attempts to encroach into these lands. Alvonian government officials would not be prosecuted and could live freely. Flags from Noordenwind to Prague would be flown at half staff to honor the losses of Greece, Malta, and Alvonia.

With the collapse of Greece and Malta, the ESP no longer existed except in name. All ESP protectorate and lands are to be under the protection of the Northlands while their status is resolved. This would include the various islands in the South Atlantic, South Africa, and various Maltese trading posts.

Northlands Protectorate Declared

The collapse of another state, this time of the great and ancient Druk Yul, was alarming and began to raise questions of this bizarre pattern. The Northlands would move from its outposts in South Africa and Asian trading posts to secure the Maldives, Lakshadweep Islands, and Sri Lanka. In addition, the Northlands would reach out to work with the EAI on possible rumors of a disease in the region which had caused this instability.

With the cryptic messages received by the Japanese, especially regarding the unclaimed land formerly part of Druk Yul the Northlands government would choose to fully mobilize all military forces and move to the highest alert. The brave soldiers landing on the islands in the Indian Ocean would be directed to dig in and wait for further reinforcements.

All Northlands' allies and friendly states would be notified that there was a real possibility of the Northlands being dragged into war should the reckless actions of other nations be continued. The Nordisk Rike, Hungary-Slovakia, USSR, Belarus, Texas, and Cascadia would be notified of the Northlands' intent to active the mutual defense clause of treaties and a request for military assistance should it be deemed necessary.

OOC: Edited 'white space' to 'unclaimed land formerly part of Druk Yul' as per discussions with a GM.

The Nordisk Rike will honor its treaty obligations that it maintains with the Northlands government. We however due to low level of intelligence on the enemy's military capabilities at this time, we would advise attempting a diplomatic resolution at this time.

Three new frigates have completed their sea trials and are to begin active duty for the navy. They would become part of a larger shift in the navy to expand the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets. The Baltic Fleet would mainly be composed of auxiliary ships and coast guard vessels to assist with navigation and search and rescue in light of the fact that all nations neighboring the Baltic were members of the Nordic Hammer pact. The navy would balance this by increasing the number and significance of the fleets protecting Northlandic and allied security and trade interests elsewhere in the world where the waters were not as friendly.
