The Church of Sleepy Hollow has declared its intent to further research in astronomy and naval navigation. The Baron approved an observatory to be built on the Ishpatina Ridge which is the highest point in Sleepy Hollow at 2,274 feet above the ground level. Army begins modernization drive

Thousands of jobs created over the span of a month as the military redesigns itself

abrams_assembly_1_gdls_wide-152316117d81

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - The Army Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Congressional Defense Committee officially announced the source of the job boom that occurred this last month - a massive modernization effort by the Army, aimed at providing today's warfighter with the best equipment the state can provide, allowing the actual fighting force itself to be smaller. Among the planned additions to the Army's order of battle are a series of new tanks to replace the Abrams chassis, new sidearms, and a dozen other projects aimed at improving equipment quality and battlefield awareness. The project, expected to cost $2 billion (or a twentieth of the Federation Aeronautics and Space Administration's budget) should take as little as two years to complete, according to Army officials at the announcement press conference this last Monday. Ten thousand jobs are believed to have been created already in the course of this effort, with more surely to come.

Strange disturbances in Colorado

Breckenridge residents report odd noises and lights west of city, near mountains

Residents of Breckenridge, Colorado, were awakened in the late hours of the night last night by a what some residents described as a 'cacaphony' of noise. Others reported seeing lights in the nearby mountains, accompanied by sustained flashes and the sound of thunder. Local UFO enthusiasts insist it was some sort of visitation, while the veterans in the area, after having watched a video taken by miss Adrienne Benavides from her house on the outskirts of town, near the mountains in question, said the lights and sounds remind them more of an attack helicopter attacking a target on the ground. Her video and others showed corresponding flashes on the surface of the mountainsides, which seemed to validate the veterans' hypotheses. None of them could offer an opinion as to what it would be that it was attacking, if it were an attack helicopter, as there is nothing in the mountain range. Army and Air Force helicopter aviation officials have denied the presence of any helicopters from their respective branches in that area, much less attack helicopters, at the time of the disturbances.

UPDATE: Further investigation of video taken by other amateur videographers in the area has revealed something Benavides' video missed due to not being in a proper angle to see capture it - after approximately twenty seconds of fire from the mystery aircraft, the aircraft seems to hover, judging by lack of movement of its running lights, before suddenly itself flashing into a brilliant fireball. One of the videos captured a large shape seeming to descend to a position near where the mystery aircraft was firing before its destruction, moments after the aircraft in question exploded. Federation personnel and local law enforcement quickly moved to secure the area. At the time of this writing, no official statements have been released by local or federal spokespeople.

State Government Becomes 'Cash Flow Positive'

Louisiana has broken to cash flow positive after an increase in business.

md-the-louisiana-state-capitol-building-

Louisiana State Capitol Building / Baton Rouge, LA

Known as a "Sportsman's Paradise", the State of Louisiana is not the economic center of the Plains Federation, however that may be starting to change.

This year, the Port of New Orleans saw exports and imports both rise roughly fifty-five percent which brought in millions of dollars to the city and region. The City of New Orleans experienced a five-percent bump in population in the last twelve months alone. Meanwhile, other Louisiana cities like the capitol Baton Rouge and one of the cultural centers of the State, Lafayette, have underwent a large amount of outside investment from places such as Texas or northern Louisiana which are trying to capitalize on the on the State's increasing prosperity.

Out of every North American city, New Orleans has the highest number of students being educated at private schools not necessarily because private education is stellar or even affordable in the State's largest city, but because public education is so poor that for many parents there is no other choice. Mayor Jack Dupree, who is rumored to be considering a bid for governor, pledged that he will "spearhead the an overhaul of the New Orleans Public School System with the new revenue coming in and a change in administrative policies." The Teacher's Union has expressed concern on "overhaul" of the current administrative system. Union spokeswoman Amy Blanca released a press statement reading, "The Teacher's Union believes the NOLA School System is troubled because of a lack of funding, not administrative burdens or misguidances." The Teacher's Union later posted a correction to the message which changed "misguidances", which is not a word, to "misguidance".

Controversies like this always arise when large amounts of money come into the treasury of any level of government. The State government has also had some debate on what to do with money after it had a green budget, meaning more money was coming in then being spent by the State, for the first time in two years. The governor urged the State congress to approve his proposal to inflate spending on his controversial welfare initiative which the Louisiana Republican Party has officially labeled a "money-pit". Mayor Dupree, on the other hand, said the State needs to focus on upgrading the degrading infrastructure that the State should be maintaining and "the public school system of our State which our governor and our congress has ignored for the past three and a half years," according to the mayor. The Republican party has also advocated the reduction of the State debt instead of just paying off interest, something Dupree supports as well.

Texas Governor Anthony Sparks congratulated Louisiana's government on Friday for breaking cash flow positive. "Many States here in the Federation seem to be moving forward economically, including Louisiana," Sparks said. "I look forward to meeting with Mayor Dupree in New Orleans next week, I'm sure it'll be an interesting visit."

News of Sleepy Hollow

Baron Dusk made a Royal Decree public today which officially recognized the Monarch Butterfly and pumpkins as national symbols of Sleepy Hollow. Farmers saw a dramatic demand for pumpkins after the decree went public. Dozens of pumpkin patches around the Hollow were harvested by eager patrons. One radio personality said that "there isn't a single home in Sleepy Hollow that wont have a pumpkin outside of its door tonight." A second decree later that day raised the Hollow's sales tax to five cents on any item sold above two dollars. The Baron hinted that the tax system may soon be reorganized, but for now a slight increase will be necessary to stock up for goods and food for the coming winter.

News of Sleepy Hollow

A permanent ban on out-of-state fishing vessels was made in a Royal Decree by the Baron following a large number of vessels from Louisiana and Texas entered the Hudson Bay and began trying to fish in the cold northern waters. The Baron immediately deployed the Forest Guard, belonging to the Sleepy Hollow National Guard, and ordered the ships to leave the Hudson Bay waters controlled by Sleepy Hollow and thus the Plains Federation. When asked if this was a legal move, Baron Dusk stated it was "not for greedy economical reasons, but for conservative ecological reasons. Over fishing has plagued the waters around North America before, and I refuse to see that happen in the Hudson Bay, especially when a sovereign state not far from us partially depends on these waters for fishing." The Baron declined to offer and further comment, and is rumored to be in discussions with the Councils of Dark and Light to prepare for Halloween and other holidays in the approaching months.

First components of new station launched

Space-loving Federation citizens flock to Galveston to watch rocket launch series.

vo.ares.rocket.launch.nasatv.640x360.jpg

Galveston, TX - Thousands of space enthusiasts gathered in Galveston today to watch six launches in the space of 9 hours, the largest series of consecutive space launches in history. The launches were in support of the Federation's HiOSTAR (High Orbital Space Telescope, Auxiliary, and Research) station project. The first module launched into orbit was the central hub, a roughly six meter diameter sphere to which all further launches were to connect. The next five launches contained a habitat module, a science module, two sets of enormous solar panel arrays, and a greenhouse module for the study of plant growth in orbit. The first crew was launched shortly thereafter aboard a Federation Crew Dragon capsule: Captain Joseph Hillman, FAF; Lieutenant (jg) Irena Karpovna, FN; and Lieutenant Craig Tillman, FMC. They are expected to be joined by another three crew members as more modules are launched into orbit. The crew is currently tasked with completing the connection of the various modules, linking them all together via the hub module.

Riots in Ferguson, MO.; Federal Guard moved in to dismantle FPD

_76994258_76994257.jpg

Ferguson, MO: After nearly a week of riots following the shooting death of an 18-year-old black man at the hands of an FPD police officer, the Federal government finally stepped in, arresting officers involved both in the shooting and in the blunders that followed, dismantling the police department with the intent of rebuilding it anew under better leadership, with a stronger emphasis on the use of non-lethal solutions and recognizing when a man is surrendering, running away, and/or not posing a threat. Psychological profiling of officers and prospective officers will become mandatory, with the intent of weeding out hot-heads and those with either racist attitudes or poor judgement.

Governor Collins Sworn into Office, Gives Republicans Power

DENVER, CO: After Ben Collins was elected into the office of Governor of Colorado last month, many people thought that this would swerve the state to the Republican side, and they were correct. the Democratic party recently lost almost half of all their representatives and senate members as the conservative side of the ballot begins to gain members after the most recent elections. The Republican Party gained 6 members after the last elections, which is including Governor Collins and Lieutenant Governor Perry. Also, the Colorado Nationalist Party gained 3 members while the Federalists gained 1. With these recent elections, the Colorado Government looke like this-

Colorado House of Representatives:

Republican:  39

Democratic: 23

Nationalist: 7

Federalist: 5

Democratic-Republican: 1

Colorado Senate:

Republican:  17

Democratic: 16

Nationalist: 14

Federalist: 3

Although the Federalist's are still gaining members, they are still the most unpopular major party in Colorado, and is very close to extinction. In fact, minor political party "Democratic-Republican Party", very similar to Oklahoma's True Republican Party, is beginning to gain ground on the federalists as they gained there first representative in the elections last month and have a very large influence on the government already. If the Federalist's do not gain multiple members in the next elections(Which will be 9 elections in the House of Representatives and 3 in the Senate), or get reelected, it is very likely that the party will roll over and become extinct. For the Democratic-Republican, that is good, however for the rest is is most likely to not turn out great as it is likely that the Socialist Party will get at least one of those votes.

However, the Republican domination in the house is projected to continue to grow as the federalist party fails, members of that party are likely to switch to Republican as it and the Demo-Rep parties are themost similar to that party. In a recent projection, it is projected that in 5 years it will lokk something like this:

Colorado House of Representatives:

Republican:  43

Democratic: 19

Nationalist: 8

Democratic-Republican: 4

Federalist: 1

Colorado Senate:

Republican:  15

Democratic-Republican: 14

Nationalist: 11

Democratic: 10

Hurricane Isabella strikes Florida, Alabama; PFS San Antonio deployed to assist in search and rescue efforts -

0.jpg

Fort Lauderdale, FL- With a swift and violent ferocity, Hurricane Isabella has devastated the eastern half of the Gulf Coast, with portions of the western section likewise affected. Hundreds of thousands of homes have been confirmed to be destroyed, with current damage estimates in the double-digit billions as a bare minimum. The Category Five storm spun up roughly a week ago, then as Tropical Storm Isabella, near Tikal's coast. It continued northeast, gaining strength and speed until it grew into the monster that smashed into the Alabaman and Floridan coast today. The storm is expected to reach as far inland as Tennessee and northern Georgia, though the main body of its strength is already spent.

The PFS San Antonio, the name-giver to the San Antonio-class LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock) amphibious assault ships, has been deployed on the tail end of the storm along with a number of Federation fleet tenders bearing supplies and rescue workers to aid in the affected areas search and rescue efforts. The 45th Infantry Division out of Oklahoma has been deployed along with the San Antonio to provide the manpower required to aid the local relief services.

A large supply of inflatable habitats, originally built for use on other planets and as part of the ongoing space station project, have been donated by aerospace consortium Ruiz-Sharpton of Roswell, NM. Each habitat is capable of comfortably holding up to six people, and, being inflatable, can be deployed in waterlogged areas with the assistance of balance-maintaining pontoons strapped to the hull.

CURE TO CANCER DISCOVERED

Doctors at MD Anderson in Houston discover cure.

cheering-crowd.jpg

Cure discovery announced at Texas A&M University. College Station at virtual standstill.

"A cure to cancer has been found," are the words of Governor Anthony Sparks. Two doctors at the MD Anderson cancer research center in Houston have claimed to have found a universal cure to cancer. Testing has been confirmed as a success on a variety of animals, and tests on human subjects are "having yielding positive results" according to a spokesman for the hospital. This came as a shock to the people of Houston, a city which had its streets filled with hundreds of thousands of residents rejoicing in the streets. Governor Sparks had to be flown out by Maritime One because his motorcade could not get out of the city. He is expected to arrive in Austin by morning.

The governor also announced that the cure will be made public and distributed once the required clinical trials were complete. One in every four deaths in the former United States is a result of cancer. This development will, as Mayor Bonin of Houston put it, "amount to ripples in the very fabric of human history." The governor requested assistance from the Federated government provided that they allow the Texas State government to remain in control of the trials and keep the cure secret until it is confirmed that there are no unwarranted side-effects. A statement from the president is expected to come sometime later today.

The presidential podium, after the announcement of the Universal Cure for Cancer.

In a statement before the press today, President Reese heralded the scientists, biologists, chemists and doctors attached to the Cure project as heroes of the Federation, and, indeed, of humanity at large. The two doctors who headed the research effort were publicly presented with the Civil Heroism Medal, the highest non-military award that the government can give. President Reese promised that "this Cure will be manufactured and distributed far and wide, that all humankind can benefit from our good fortune. Gone are the days of a cancer diagnoses being almost a sentence of death, of survival being iffy unless the cancer is caught early in its development."

The President is expected to make the day of the cure's announcement a national holiday.

Hurricane dies out, cleanup and rescue operations begin

katrina_five_32.jpg

Helicopters from the HS-1 squadron from LHD-1 San Antonio rescue stranded survivors from a rooftop in Florida.

Fort Lauderdale, FL: Search and rescue operations begin in earnest as Hurricane Isabella spins itself out, leaving a path of destruction hundreds of miles wide. From the welldeck of the San Antonio, LCACs (Landing Craft, Air Cushioned), massive hovercrafts normally used to ferry troops and materiel ashore, bring food, medical supplies, and prefab housing units to designated landing zones the worst-affected zones in Florida and Alabama. They work in conduction with helicopter squadrons stationed on the same ship, whose primary task is to locate and rescue stranded survivors, bringing them to designated gathering places where they can be fed and their injuries seen to.

Thousands of troops have been landed with heavy rescue equipment in hand, the most common of which are rigid inflatable boats, which are the most commonly used form of transport in the flooded areas left behind by the storm. Most of the personnel assigned are medical personnel, along with detachments of Military Police, working to restore public health and order.

Initial casualty estimates have climbed into the thousands, and are expected to top out at a minimum of ten thousand. In some areas, the damage is total, almost as bad as a direct strike from an EF-5 tornado. There are currently no estimates on rebuilding time for the infrastructure alone.

Indian-Born Running for House?

DENVER, CO: Yesterday Indian-Born politician Sahan Bains announced that he had every intention to run for the House of Representatives next year and beat a federalist going for reelection. He has said that he will represent the Democratic-Republican party as he tries to bring the greatest party to power. He also said that in the distant future he may want to run for office of the Governor. These are some highlighted quotes of his-

"I believe that we as a state and a whole nation can achieve great things if we work together. It is all we really need, is for one people to strive for representation. I refuse to use the word "power" as that is not what it is. You and me, as politicians, are not the kings and queens, we are the slaves and the servants. Our nation must understand this."

"Of all nations I have ever seen, this is by-far the greatest of them all. But, that does not mean it is great, now does it? I beleieve that this state can install millions of new roads and a subway and commuter rail in Denver. Our state has great potential, so does our nation, but is it great?"

"I believe that the government should set up a people meeting once every other week, where the people express their feelings formally. This way our servants may know what their party and people want."

And as the elections draw closer, we will see how he does. However, the largest question is if he is elgible as he just got his citizenship last year. He moved here when he was twelve, then moved back at age fourteen and stayed there until age twenty-seven. Well, while the story evolves, this is 9 News Denver.

Tornado Hits Denver, Causes Over 600 Injuries & Counting

DENVER, CO-  Yesterday, just outside of Denver, the town of Watkins was hit with an F3 tornado. It appeared just east in Bennett before moving west to Watkins and dissapearing just south of the Denver Airport. It was the cause of 10 delayed flights due to it's relative location to the Airport. The Colorado National Guard went to the towns of Watkins and Bennett and so far counted 600 injuries. this is nearly half of the entire population of these two towns. People were rushed to the multiple hospitals in Denver and Storm Chasers monitered the tornado. Almost seventy percent of the Watkins population was rushed to Denver and much of Bennett. Nobody at the airport was injured, however 2 of the flights that were delayed ended up turning around and landing in Santa Fe, New Mexico and another all the way in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Multiple people on these flights told of their disatisfaction with the wrong landing locations, and most were offered a seventy-five percent discount on the next available flights to Denver. The government of Denver and Colorado refused to speak of the incident for the time being, however are expected to speak at the governor's next press conference tomorrow at 12 Noon, as well as discussing the discovery of the Cancer Cure. The tragedy is constantly being handled by the men and women at hospitals, the National Guard, and volunteers from all across the Plains Federation working to rebuild these two small, rural towns. Their work is very much appreciated.

Federal Gov't Authorizes Trade with USNA; Border Crossings manned and opened along Mississippi

Oklahoma City, OK - In a press conference today at the White House, President Reese gave official permission for Federal companies to begin business with interests in the newly-formed USNA, after the two month grace period following any newly conceived nation's formation during which no contact of any sort is allowed beyond that specifically authorized by the President and Department of State. Several Federation-based companies have already expressed interest in exporting and importing wares to bolster the fledgling nation's economy.

"The border with the USNA, unlike those of our treaty partners to our south and west, will be actively secured by Border Patrol and National Guard units, until such a time as fitting diplomatic relations have been established with the USNA," President Reese was quoted as saying.

FASA finishes initial construction phase on HiOSTAR station; Phase II now underway

Oklahoma City, OK - FASA chairman Michael McGilvie held a press conference last Friday concerning the final launch and docking planned for the initial HiOSTAR construction phase. "With the majority of the station now assembled in orbit, our first resident astronauts will be launched aboard a Crew Dragon capsule in the next few months, once the selection has been finalized. The capsule itself will be ready for launch sometime next month, and fuelled next Friday." Federation space enthusiasts rejoiced at the news, glad that their nation has secured itself a small foothold beyond Earth's atmosphere.

Overtures made to Wisconsin; voters receptive (Wisconsin 1/7)

Chicago, IL - Federal plebiscites recently polled Wisconsinites about their willingness to join the Federation, and the question they posed was reportedly met with some enthusiasm. Several years of watching the Federation's stability and prosperity have seemingly had their affect on those just over the border, looking in. Federation citizens polled on this side of the border have also responded to the question of Wisconsin's admittance with some enthusiasm, citing Wisconsin's history of fantastic beer as one of several main motivations.

Wisconsin conducts formal opinion poll; 78% of voters in favor of joining Federation

(Wisconsin, 2/7)

Madison, WI - In a formal opinion poll conducted by the Wisconsin government over the last few weeks, an astonishing number of voters have indicated their favorability to becoming a State of the Federation.

"Having the security afforded to us by a union of states, and one as stable and prosperous as the Federation, at that, would be a very positive thing for Wisconsin," a Madison local was quoted as saying. "It would be very positive on a lot of fronts, not least of which are the security and business fronts. I'd vote in favor of a resolution to join the Federation if the Federation'll have us."

Referendum passes; Wisconsin House of Representatives begins to vote

(Wisconsin 4/7)

Madison, WI - Finishing with a very strong majority vote in favor of passing legislation to integrate into the Plains Federation, Wisconsin's Membership Referendum closed out today amid the cheering and applause of Wisconsinites. The Wisconsin House of Representatives has begun the legislative process required to make such an immense change, going from an independent entity to becoming, once again, a member of something greater than the sum of its parts. The Federal House has begun preparations of its own for the acceptance of such a request.

News of a Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow is Safe

Texas and Illinois National Guardsmen Secure Borders

(Sleepy Hollow 1/7)

The Texas and Illinois National Guards moved into Sleepy Hollow with an estimated few thousand troops after Baron Dusk requested troops to be sent in to "inspect" the borders and make sure they were secure. Baron Dusk denied that there were any attempts of a coup in Sleepy Hollow and reaffirmed his belief that the Councils of Dark and Light will find a solution to the budget - however he did say that if they continue to keep the State's financial stability in the balance he will step in and establish a budget himself.

The troops have been supposedly ordered not to interact with Hollowins who have already begun preparing for their yearly celebration of Hallowe'en, the State's most celebrated holiday. Baron Dusk thanked the governors of Texas and Illinois for the "limited number of troops sent to this Sleepy Hollow" and that he is "very grateful for the generosity they are willing to show the people of this small, secluded State." According to Baron Dusk's office, the troops will remain for a few weeks around the border and then will return home once the Sleepy Hollow Militia can secure the new locations the National Guard has occupied.

Plains Federation Shuttle Program Begins, "Louis" Into Space

Space_Shuttle_Atlantis_launches_from_KSC

Keota, CO- Today in the small town of Keota, the official Space Shuttle program was started as the Colorado State Government approved the program to begin when the shuttle "Louis" took off with nine willing astronauts, with the bold mission of releasing a small satellite measuring about the length of an average-sized couch. No specific measurements were given. The satellite will be orbiting Earth for 2 years and will take thousands of pictures of Earth, including the first nighttime pictures of our modern world, which clearly represent the technology of nations across Planet Earth. Keota will also be the site of multiple launches in the future as it gets transformed into an exploration empire.

Private Wire to The Colorado State Government

To The Governor of Colorado

From The Deputy Secretary of State

Governor,

I am not sure how the Colorado government afforded to build the a space shuttle or has the finances to keep it operating and have a functioning program, but you have somehow done it. I advise that you get the okay for any future space missions from the Plains Federation's Federated Space Agency, NASA, which is primarily in Houston and Galveston. If you have any other questions you can get in touch with the Director of NASA, Douglas Jericho.

Regards,

To: Samuel Ireland, Plains

From: House of the Governor of Colorado

Dear Sir Ireland,

I apologize if this seemed an outrage. The large, but private, corporation NACA hosted the launch and was able to keep up the costs of operation thanks to the endorsement of the Colorado State Government, as well as donation and endorsement of other private corporations. Thus, I welcome the Director of NASA, one Douglas Jericho, to a meeting with the team of NACA's best representatives in their headquarters, in Fort Collins, to discuss this issue, should I call it? I thank you for your time, and hopefully Michael Smith of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics will see you next week.

Sincerely,

Ben Collins, Governor of Colorado
