Rain fell over the city, the nuclear fallout all across the world changing the environment in interesting ways. Cape Town had changed dramatically in the years since the fall of South Africa, the skyline filled with towers ,a jungle of steel and concrete. Neon signs flashing on every surface, along with holograms advertising products from all over the world. In a city like this it was easy to get lost in, and for some people that was exactly what they were looking for.

Jaco Southgate awoke promptly at 6am, groggily as always, and after a 20 minute wake up routine set out through the city to his middle management job at Brady Electric Technology, one of the 6 largest companies in Cape Town. Once outside he looked up to the sky, closing his eyes and letting the rain fall on his face before opening his umbrella and beginning the walk to the metro and begin his day.
 
Across the city, Nuru Haight had a similar goal, secretary to the CEO of Medical Mechanical, she expected it to just any other Monday, if she knew what would cross her desk in a few hours she probably would have stayed in bed.

         Upon arriving at work, Nuru realized this was not an average day, the lobby was far more crowded than usual, a tension filling the building, taking the elevator, those riding with her were quieter than usual, the familiar ding of top floor pushing the thoughts out of her mind, she went to her desk and began looking over the usual pile of paperwork that had accumulated since she left last night. most of it standard fare, one file caught her eye, bold red letters across it CLASSIFIED, she quickly brought it into her bosses office, he stood looking out the window upon the city. She felt nervous as always when in his office, his mood hard to read, and changing in an instant, before she reached his desk he turned around to look at her, and his eyes widened as they saw the manila folder, leaning over and taking it from her hand he dismissed her with his hand, eyes never leaving the file in his hand. Walking out the door she let out a sigh after the door swooshed closed behind her, Nuru got back to her normal duties, figuring she would find out what the contents whenever he decided to tell her.

 

          Her boss, Ryker Vernon, was filled with glee upon seeing the envelope, knowing it contained the works of the past few months. the city's mayor, Nico Haumann, had been working with Medical Mechanical, Apex Biological, Horizon Software, Strategic Supplies, Savage Paragon Entertainment, and Brady Electric Technology, the 6 largest corporations in the city, and together they would form an independent government, a citystate unlike any other. A board of directors would be formed containing Nico as the Prime Minister, the Ministers of Defense, Commerce, Education, Agriculture, Culture, as well as a soon to be formed Foreign Affairs Minister, as well as the CEOs of 6 aforementioned corporations. these 13 people were already the most powerful in the city, sans the FA Minister, and after the FA Ministry was finalized, Elfrieda Killam would send a formal Declaration of Existance to the world. Cape Town would be independent once more.

The city of Cape Town has after much deliberation, decided upon independence from Athens, during the transitional period we will be led by Nico Haumann, the former mayor of the city until such time as a formal government can be formed. Cape Town has decided it needs independence once more, to find our own path and carve our own future in this world. Cape Town would also like to take this forum as a chance to thank Athens for its support and assistance of maintaining law and order of Africa, truly a noble nation to care for those around them as well as they care for their own citizens.

The next few months, the Corporate Cartel tightened their grip, there wasn't a company left in the city that the Gang of 6 didn't have majority control of. This did not mean that they were any less competitive amongst each other, constantly looking for an edge over one of the others, the first dramatic change would happen out of chance.

 

Nuru had left her office at around 10:30pm, and was on the metro on her way home when a familar guy stood across from her staring for a moment. This was not an abnormal occurrence for her, but it was rare to have an attractive guy so well dressed and with what appeared to be quite expensive neurotech actually show an interest in her, and he always appeared to be on the same train as her for the past few days. Nuru finally worked up the courage to make the first move, she halfheartedly waved saying "Hello" quietly to break the tension. Catching Jaco off guard he quickly recovered "Apologies for staring Miss, It's rare to see such a beautiful unmodified girl in this City anymore, What's a pretty thing like you doing alone so late?"

 

"Just another busy day at the office, I can't help but notice you always seem to get out around the same time, boss working you like a dog as well?"

 

He laughed, "Don't they all? would you like to grab a coffee or a bite to eat? I rarely get time to socialize, and you caught my eye, I feel like I should get to know you if we're going to be sharing the ride home."

 

Nuru also had no life outside of work. "Sure, lets grab dinner before I go home and repeat this cycle, It'd be nice to actually spend time on myself for once."

 

The left a few stops before their usual, coming up in one of the many city squares, their date while only lasting about an hour, was the first Nuru had been on in years and was an enjoyable conversation and change of pace. After their meal they stood out on a balcony outside of the restaurant, enjoying the view of the city tonight, Jaco couldn't resist taking a picture of her, at last they exchanged numbers and made plans to do this again next week.
