President Costava
ARSTOTZKA - Polls opened under tight security in Arstotzkas’s first democratic election in 22 years this afternoon, an uncertain vote that doesen't unsure the 2 major parties as an easy win but brings a hint of parliamentary politics to the isolated former soviet republic. The carefully choreographed end of the state of emergency and martial law, marred by complex rules that stifled minor political forces to ensure stability, entered its final stage in a race largely between two powerful parties running virtually unopposed: the right wing National Party of Arstotzka led by Leonid Kuchma, a former bureaucrat and dissident of the former communist regime, and the radical-left wing Democratic Union of Arstotzka led by Petro Symonenko, a trade union representative. The vote is expected to reduce Arstotzka’s isolation in at a time when neighboring Caucasus has been shaken by the ongoing armed conflict. It is the first vote since 1991, when after the collapse of the Soviet Union, President Jorji Costava, a professor, was elected with 98% as President of Arstotzka. Since then, no elections were held due to the high instability of the country and the influences of the organized crime in almost all aspects of politics. “After the elections, Arstotzka will be a genuine democracy,” said the President in a public statement. Polls will close down on September 2nd at 00:01.Leonid Kuchma, Candidate Prime Minister for the National Party of Arstotzka READ THE INTERVIEW WITH NATIONAL PARTY OF ARSTOTZKA (NPA) CANDIDATE, LEONID KUCHMAPetro Symonenko, Candidate Prime Minister for the Democratic Union of Arstotzka READ THE INTERVIEW WITH DEMOCRATIC UNION OF ARSTOTZKA (DUA) CANDIDATE, PETRO SYMONENKO Edited September 1, 2013 by President Costava
President Costava
ARSTOTZKA - Arstotzka is heading towards a parliamentary deadlock as election results are still uncertain. Polling stations will close down in 8 hours and with projections showing no coalition strong enough to form a government. The projections suggested at first the centre right could have a slim lead in the race for the People's Assembly, the legislative body of the Republic of Arstotzka, after more than two thirds of the vote was counted. No party or coalition appeared likely to be able to form a majority , creating a deadlocked parliament - the opposite of the stable result that Arstotzka desperately needs to discuss economic reform and a new constitution. Such an outcome has the potential to revive fears over the instability of the country, with prospects of a long period of uncertainty and economic consequences. Arstotzkan financial markets took fright after rising earlier on hopes for a stable and strong centre-right led government backed by National Party leader Leonid Kuchma, who has not released any statement due to "no comment" rule during vote counting.
