What you CAN do with genes is chemistry, since DNA codes for chemicals. For instance, we can in theory splice a hypothetical alien plants' talent for nitrogen fixation into a terran plant."

 

Much work in biotechnology and medicine had been done by Tikal to protect its people against all kinds of plagues, existing and even some that had to be engineered, such as 'ebolapox', as they were popularly called. This research was brought over the course of many months from one world into the other. Appropriate measures would be put into place, so that neither would ever have to suffer for longer than necessary from biological or chemical attacks. Countermeasures would be available to every city and most communities in record time, using among other things the nanotechnology/harmony-based medbays.

 

Tikal would be prepared for any and all attacks, be they nuclear, biological or chemical. Even EMP attacks would be dissipated for the most part, some of the most advanced technology in the world protecting the nation's systems. In a way, Tikal was a fortress of a nation.

The Prince and Princess were both in one of the deep underground command centres, watching on a large holoscreen photos and videos of catastrophe. Both were quite unsettled.
 
"This is terrible. How didn't we find out about this earlier?"
 
"The energies used to open the portal are vastly different from what our Harmony technology produces, My Prince. Even if we had had all our sensors pointed right at it, we wouldn't have detected it."
 
"And only now that you adjusted things, we can take readings." She turned to her husband. "How do we respond to this? These, these Daemons endanger not just those nearby, but the entire continent."

"I would suggest creating and training groups of elite warriors using Harmony technology."
 
The Prince shook his head. "Normal equipment won't cut it. Not against such beasts. We require far more, far greater commitment from our troops."
 
His wife walked towards the image, staring at it for a few moments. She then turned to him. "Even implants utilising the technology may not be enough. There is one other way, though."

He stared, then smiled at her, not quite believing what she was saying. "Surely you're not talking about unleashing ourselves, my love? You know how this world works. One moment we would be all-powerful and the next step we take could rip those very powers from us."
 
Chuckling momentarily, she shook her head. "Nothing quite so radical, fear not. No, I would grant those doing battle for us a measure of our strength. Create Aspects for them to dedicate themselves to, Paths for them to tread. Let them See and Know."
 
"Hmm. You make a good argument, dear. Yes, this may be a good solution for our problem. Combining the Paths and Aspects with Harmony technology, bringing true Balance..."
 
"Highnesses? May I know what you're talking about?"
 
She smiled at the AI. "Do not worry, my friend. We will enlighten you in due time. But for now, there are preparations to be made."

Citing problems with organised crime in regions west of Yucatan and the desire of many people to reunite with the Principality, their homeland, the following regions will be taken under our protection for later re-incorporation into the following substates,
 
Oaxaca, Guerrero and Michoacán will be merged into Michoacán.
Veracruz, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Hidalgo and Querétaro will be reformed into the state of Tlaxcala.
Morelos, the state of Mexico and the former Federal District will be reformed into Tenochtitlan.
Tamaulipas and Nuevo León will be reformed into Tamaulipas.
Mexico City will be renamed into Tenochtitlan.
 
All standard policies regarding Internet, news, education and so on would be implemented within the year. To strengthen the states' economies, older, stronger states will aid in building up industries and other economic measures.

Tikalians are a curious people. They believe that their lot in life is set in stone the moment they are born. Each man, each woman and all those who don't quite fit these limiting terms, they all believe that a person has only a few things in life they excel at. One might be an excellent teacher, bringing wisdom and knowledge to pupils without problems, handling troublemakers with ease and a natural affinity to encourage them to find their own talents. Another might be a soldier beyond compare, learning and mastering the use of any personal weapon in mere days. The next could be a leader, able to weave words without thinking, inspiring pride and loyalty, to win others to their cause. Despite this, every person is equal, and only on merit do they succeed.
 
But this belief of Talents is incomplete. There are organisations and agencies to try and help all people to achieve their greatest potential, but even they do not always succeed. Not all people can realise the potential they hold within themselves.
 
For this purpose, a system of Paths shall be created. Henceforth, each citizen, upon completion of education, may choose for themselves a discipline, a Path, and will focus themselves upon it. This Path will be studied, practised, and eventually mastered. Then, one chooses a new Path and the process will begin anew.
 
Each new role does not completely replace the previous, but merely adds to the person's accumulated experience. As one passes through these different roles they explore the many aspects of their own character. Thanks to Harmony technology and other scientific advances, ageing can be slowed or even entirely stopped. Thus, one may dedicate themselves to many Paths over decades and centuries, accumulating great amounts of experience and attaining a sophisticated understanding of the universe.
 
One must be cautious upon treading a Path, however, for all of them may be dangerous for the mind. Those who focus and obsess themselves to a too great extent upon a Path may become unable to ever leave it upon completion. They will continue to walk this Path until their death. This fate shall be known as the most terrible one to be experienced, and such individuals will be known as 'lost upon the Path'. Only few individuals may do such a thing on purpose.
 
 
There will be many Paths, or Xi'inbal. The most well-known ones may become the Paths of the Seer and the Warrior, though they are but two of those one may devote themselves to. Some of these other roles are very clearly defined, with their own traditions and behavioural patterns. Others are less structured and offer less guidance. They allow a relative amount of freedom and rely on the inner strength that the person has already attained. These Paths involve more civilian and mundane roles such as technicians, civil administrators, fabricators, explorers, and so on. Regardless of their civilian roles, these individuals may still take part in battle as Guardians and in other functions which are necessary in any military force.
 
Those who walk a Path shall be known as Eldar. Those who walk a Path will receive the Blessings of the Unyielding Sun and the Illuminating Moon.
 



Path of Awakening

The Path of Awakening is a Path in which Eldar learn how to analyse their surroundings. Those trained on this Path can notice things that would seem insignificant or impossible to see, even to a normal Eldar. The Path of Awakening is the polar opposite of the Path of Dreaming, as it focuses on looking without rather than within. The Path of Awakening is usually a prelude to the Path of the Artisan.

Path of the Artisan

The Path of the Artisan is a relatively common Path. Upon the Path of the Artisan, there are many smaller avenues, such as the Path of the Poet, the Path of the Sculptor and so on. Even within each of these minor Paths there may be conflicting schools of style.

Path of Command

The Path of Command, also known as the Path of the Leader is for those Eldar with a passion for military command and strategy. Its members are the Autarchs who tread this Path to better command larger forces of Eldar warriors. To enter this Path one is expected to have completed previously several military-focused Paths already.

Path of the Dreamer

The Path of the Dreamer is a meditative Path undertaken by many Eldar in which one learns to control and direct their dreams, which they can stay entranced in for days at a time. During these dreams it is usual for another Eldar to act as a "Dream Watcher", lest the Dreamer loses themselves within the dream. .

Path of Grief

The Path of Grief is a Path in which one grieves for the death and suffering at Eldar remembrance services and funerals. This allows the other Eldar to remember without succumbing to the emotions that would be in violation of the Path they tread.

Path of the Mariner

The Path of the Mariner crew the Aether vessels throughout the Solar System. Those who seek this Path often wish to see the sights of the System and often seek inner peace after a period in which they feel lost.

Path of the Outcast

The Path of the Outcast is what is considered as outside the Eldar Path. No more shall be spoken of it.

Path of Service

The Path of Service is a Path in which Eldar give themselves over to the service of others. Eldar do this out of the same sense of duty that inspires some to take more militant Paths. They perform jobs the Humans may describe as menial.

Path of the Seer

The Path of the Seer, also known as the Path of the Witch, is to be the longest, most treacherous, most complex, and rarest of all Paths. Its members may become the psychic Seers. Those who dedicate themselves to this Path may find it more difficult to leave it upon completion. It is a Path that should only be tread if one has not found fulfilment in other areas of expertise.
Those who walk it may become Spiritseers, or Warlocks or Bonesingers. Those who lose themselves upon this Path will be the Farseers, the most powerful of all.

Path of the Warrior

The Path of the Warrior's members are the Aspect Warriors. Those who lose themselves upon this path become Exarchs. Each Warrior Aspect represents one, very specific aspect of warfare. Each Aspect Warrior is highly specialised for their specific role.
Further details shall be given once Eldar have found themselves upon this Path.

 

 

 

 

OOC: Much of the Path and Eldar stuff is taken from the WH40k Lexicanum, for the record, and rewritten to fit Tikal better. I take no credit for the specific Path concepts, for example.

Additionally, for those who do not recognise hovertanks, lasers, psionics and the like, all skills and equipment will function at the standard maximum (currently 2014) tech level in regards to efficiency.

Aspect Warriors. The greatest of the great, zenith of all endeavours military.
But what exactly are they? How are they organised? That is a question few who do not reside in Tikal can answer. Perhaps none who do not live in the Maya state can.

The true military strength of the Eldar comes from the highly specialised Aspect Warriors. They are walking the Path of the Warrior. Once an Eldar has chosen to tread this Path, he or she joins a specific Aspect Shrine. Each shrine has Temples subservient to it, an Exarch leading each Temple. These Exarchs train them in a specific aspect of warfare and so aids them in representing an aspect. Blessed by the Unconquered Sun, the god of war, each Aspect Warrior embodies a facet of the eternal god.

An Exarch is a former aspect warrior who "has lost himself upon the Path of the Warrior" and is unable to ever leave it again. He becomes an Exarch; simultaneously a priest of the Unconquered Sun, a caretaker of the individual shrine, and trainer, teacher, and instructor of the respective aspect. He is equipped with personalised, unique weaponry and armour. Each aspect has its own particular kind of Exarchs. On the battlefield an Exarch commands an individual squad of aspect warriors. Exarchs are formidable warriors, and most of them can use their abilities to help the whole squad of aspect warriors under their command.


Aspect Warrior Paths

Dire Avengers
[spoiler]follow the Unconquered Sun in his aspect as a noble and merciless warrior, and are the most tactically flexible and numerous of all the Aspect Warriors. They are most commonly armed with Avenger Shuriken Catapults. To wield a shuriken is considered an art form by Dire Avengers, who use these weapons to bring monomolecular death to their enemies. Even when a Dire Avenger has removed their armour and left their shrine, they will keep some of these razor-sharp discs hidden under their clothing, never truly unarmed.

They usually wear standard Aspect armour, predominately coloured blue or camouflage patterns, with a distinctive high crested helm which makes them appear taller without adding bulk. A tabard is also a common addition, with runic inscriptions identifying the name of the warrior's Shrine and Temple of origin, and both it and the helm are often painted in a contrasting white colour. Over each Dire Avenger's shoulder is an advanced targeter which connects to the Avenger Catapult through the handle. This pan-spectral rangefinder syste, operates independently of the wielder and is capable of tracking multiple targets simultaneously, differentiating between friend and foe, and feeding this information directly to the warrior's helm display.

In battle Dire Avengers operate in squads of five to ten warriors, which sometimes includes an Exarch. These patient, methodical warriors are equally well suited for both offensive and defensive operations. Their training gives them the uncanny ability to read the ebb and flow of battle, knowing when to press the attack or feign retreat and fall back, luring their foes into a carefully prepared ambush. Dire Avengers are also trained in hand-to-hand techniques, though it is not the main focus. When forced to conduct close combat Dire Avengers carry deadly ceremonial knives as a weapon of last resort. These blades are more traditionally used in ceremonies conducted prior to and after battle.

An Exarch is the leader of an Aspect Temple. He is one that has traveled so far down the Path of the Warrior that he can no longer turn from that path to follow another path. They wear more elaborate and personalised versions of Aspect Armour which are said to contain the souls of past Exarchs, giving the wearer their knowledge and guidance. As befitting their Shrine the Dire Avenger Exarchs are tactically flexible warriors able to conduct their squad in multiple roles. Rather than just one Avenger Catapult, some Exarchs will carry two of these weapons into battle, wielding one in each hand with deadly skill. Others specialise in close combat, opting to wield a Shuriken Pistol and a nano-forged blades, or so-called Shimmershields.

The Fire Dragons
[spoiler]represent the writhing, sinewy feathered serpent of ancient myth. Fire Dragons are aggressive and warlike medium-range combat fighters who utilise heat weapons to destroy enemy vehicles and strongpoints.

Fire Dragons take savage delight in the destruction they cause, and nothing short of the complete annihilation of the enemy will suffice for these creatures of wanton destruction. They specialise in destroying enemy war machines and fixed fortifications, as well as rooting out heavily-armoured infantry and weapon emplacements. In this role each Fire Dragons wields a mighty Fusion Gun, capable of reducing an enemy to a cloud of superheated vapour in a second, or a battle tank into a pile of molten slag. Against targets too tough for even these weapons the Fire Dragons carry Melta Bombs, disc-shaped shaped charges which can be attached to nearly any surface and detonated on command.

However, the limited range of their weaponry limits the Fire Dragons' effectiveness, especially when speed and tactical flexibility are needed. It is also the reason Fire Dragon Aspect Armour is thicker compared to a Dire Avenger's, including spiny protrusions which make it stiffer and more resilient, so that the wearer can properly close with the enemy and deliver death and destruction upon them. Fire Dragon armour is often painted in fiery colours, such as red or orange.

A squad of Fire Dragons can number between five to ten warriors, typically including an Exarch to lead them, and may be delivered into battle within the protective hold of a specialised transport.

It is said that Exarchs of the Fire Dragon Aspect generate a corona of lambent flame around their bodies when the lust for battle has taken hold. These crack shots can pintpoint targets with unerring accuracy, and under their guidance Fire Dragon squads become superb tank hunters. Instead of a Fusion Gun some Exarchs will wield a Fire Pike or Dragon Breath Flamer instead.

Howling Banshees
[spoiler]are lightly-equipped warrior-women and fearsome close combat specialists who draw their inspiration from the unearthly creature with which they share a name. What they may lack in brute strength they more than make up for in precision and efficiency, and their piercing warcry has signaled the doom of countless foes.

Unique to the Howling Banshees is the fact that they are almost always female, for the banshee of legend is itself a female spirit. Fast and athletic, Howling Banshee training emphasizes swiftness of foot and mobility in hand-to-hand combat. Their Aspect Armour is coloured bone-white contrasted with a flaming shock of orange hair, while their principle armament of Shuriken Pistol and Power Weapon is a devastating combination in close combat. Their most notable weapon though is the Banshee Mask, a powerful sonic weapon which uses a harmonic amplifier to turn their battle cry into a howling shriek of psychic rage which attacks their enemies' central nervous system. An entire squad of Howling Banshees activating their masks all at once can cripple an entire enemy unit before a single blow is landed, leaving them paralyzed and helpless before their onslaught.

Howling Banshee operate in squads of five to ten warriors, including sometimes an Exarch to lead them. While fleet of foot on their own, these squads may also take advantage of specialised transports.

The Exarchs of the Howling Banshees emphasize their aspect to the highest levels and help pass this knowledge on to their squads. Under her guidance a squad of Howling Banshees are acrobatic warriors, leaping and bounding into combat with deadly grace, while the war shout of an Exarch is even more devastating than the normal piercing cry of a Banshee Mask.

The Striking Scorpions
[spoiler]focus on the close combat aspect of battle. They epitomise the deadly attributes of their namesake, which can sting and kill a creature many times its size. Preferring to stalk their enemy and strike at them from the shadows, they are merciless killers who revel in the hunt and the kill.

Striking Scorpions are not only among the most powerful and violent close-combat specialists fielded by the Eldar, but excellent infiltrators, stalking their prey through the shadows before falling upon them like the wrath of the Unconquered Sun himself. Compared to their closest cousins, the Howling Banshees, Striking Scorpions are not as swift but instead more adept at moving through dense terrain, using every available nook and crevice to lie in wait of the enemy before unleashing their attack. Only those Eldar of strong physique can become Striking Scorpions in order to wear their armour and wield their weapons.

A squad of Striking Scorpions typically number five to ten warriors, one of which is usually an Exarch.

The Aspect Armour of the Striking Scorpions is similar in construction to that of other Aspect Shrines, but incorporates heavier, rigid armour plating for increased protection. While the extra weights means Scorpions are not as swift as their Howling Banshee sisters, the protection they provide is such that small arms are virtually useless against them, requiring concentrated fire from multiple weapons in order to bring down Striking Scorpions. The armour's coloring is predominately green, with different patterns of yellow, black or orange depending on each individual Temple.

Exarchs of the Striking Scorpions are definitive shadow-warriors, embodying all that their Shrine stands for. They are adept at shadowstrikes, becoming one with the shadows and using them to shield their squad from the enemy as they approach, and their excellent abilities as stalkers allows them and their squad to flow silently and without a trace through dense terrain.

The Swooping Hawks
[spoiler]take their name from the wild hunting birds of mythology, who symbolize revenge and retribution. Just as the birds of legend contain the spirit of a murdered Eldar, hovering over their killers as a mark of guilt, so too do the Swooping Hawks fly across the battlefield, dealing swift death to their enemies.

Of all the Aspect Shrines the Swooping Hawks are among the most mobile, thanks to their Swooping Hawk Wings, which allow them to lift off into the air at a moment's notice and fly across the battlefield. The speed and agility this gives the Swooping Hawks more than makes up for the fact that their Aspect Armour, compared to that worn by other Shrines, is thinner and offers less protection. The armour is typically coloured like the sky, such as a pale blue or grey, with contrasting colours as well, especially on the wings.

The ritual weapons of the Swooping Hawks are the Lasblaster and Swooping Hawk Grenade Pack, two weapons especially suited to their role as harassers operating ahead of the main Eldar host. The grenade pack in particular can carry a wide variety of grenades. Flying over their enemies' heads, the Swooping Hawks rain down explosive death before closing in to press the assault or falling back to cover to use their Lasblasters.

Those Exarchs who serve in the Shrines of the Swooping Hawks embody their Aspect to extraordinary heights and use their knowledge and skills to assist and lead their squads. Knowing the best moment to redeploy on the battlefield, the Exarch can lead his the Swooping Hawks on a skyleap high fly into the air and land in a tactically better position. Such is his skill in aerial combat, as well as those he has taught, that they can successfully combat even enemy helicopters and the like.

The Dark Reapers
[spoiler] emulate the Unconquered Sun in his aspect as "the Destroyer," and specialize in the use of destructive, long-range weaponry.

The Dark Reapers know that even the mightiest of weapons can be wielded with the precision of a scalpel, and so they take pride in the accuracy with which they use their signature weapon, the Reaper Launcher. Spitting forth a hail of armour-piercing missiles capable of taking down even the best-protected foes, these weapons allow the Dark Reapers to exert total control over the battlefield and destroy targets at will.

Their unerring accuracy is assisted by their Aspect Armour, a skull-masked costume the colour of midnight. These symbols of destruction include a complex set of interlocking plates which provides better protection compared to other Aspect Armour sets. To absorb the recoil of firing the Launcher and maintain a steady firing position, the powered limb supports include lower leg armour and boots fitted with stabilisers and clamps to secure the Dark Reaper to the ground. Their helmet incorporates specialised rangefinding equipment, part of which extends out of the helmet in the form of sensor vanes, which allows them to achieve target lock on even fast-moving vehicles. This also creates a mind-link with the Dark Reaper's weapon, allowing them to "see" out of the muzzle of the launcher. The resulting increase in their already deadly accuracy means it is almost impossible for a Dark Reaper to miss his target.

The downside to all of this extra equipment, along with the weight of their weapon, is that Dark Reapers are slower and less mobile compared to other Aspect Warriors; given their tactical role of long-range fire support though, this is seen as less of an issue. Operating in squads of three to five Dark Reapers, one of which may be an Exarch, these units are usually positioned in cover behind the main Eldar battle line, where they can best support the advance of friendly troops and target the enemy's heavy assets.

The skills and equipment of a Dark Reaper Exarch exemplifies the already deadly firepower and accuracy of their Aspect. Instead of a Reaper Launcher, some Exarchs will arm themselves with a larger missile launcher, a Tempest Launcher, or a Shuriken Cannon. Their supernatural abilities make even the talents of regular Dark Reapers pale in comparison, as they are perfectly adept at firing more rapidly without loss of accuracy any weapon they wield or land pinpoint shots so accurate they can bypass cover and hit targets which thought themselves protected.[/spoiler]

The Warp Spiders
[spoiler]are one of the types of Aspect Warriors, Eldar who represent a facet of their war god Kaela Mensha Khaine. Taking their name from the same creatures who protect the Infinity Circuits of their Craftworlds, Warp Spiders epitomise aggressive defense and make use of their teleportation devices to attack the enemy suddenly and disappear before they can retaliate.

Fighting in squads of five to ten members, which sometimes includes an Exarch to lead them, Warp Spiders are deadly warriors who model their weaponry and armour on those of certain spider species. The signature piece of equipment used by Warp Spiders is the Jump Generator, a compact device housed within the armoured backpack of their Aspect Armour which allows for short journeys through space-time. Using this warp-generator Warp Spiders can unexpectedly materialize right next to their foes and fire their ritual weapon, the Death Spinner, which easily slices through flesh and bone.

Warp Spider armour is much bulkier compared to those worn by most other Shrines, making them more heavily armoured but slower. While this would be more constricting for the movements of other Eldar warriors, the Warp Spiders' unique teleportation abilities negates this disadvantage. The colouration of this armour is traditionally some variation on red and black, and is further warded to allow for safer travel through space-time.

Of all the Aspect Shrines the Warp Spiders are considered the bravest simply for their normal method of operation. Even traveling a short distance through teleportation is a tremendous risk, with not just their lives but their very souls on the line. Despite this they are also regarded as strange and terrifying, the furthest removed from the normal Eldar mindset of all the Aspect Shrines. Warp Spiders also tend to have a bleak outlook on life, and rarely mix with warriors from other Aspect Shrines.

The Exarchs of the Warp Spider Shrines have honed their skills as ambushers to a fine detail and passed on this knowledge to their squad. They are not only experts as surprise assaults, teleporting onto the battlefield in a storm of crackling lightning, but also know the best times to withdraw from combat and set up to perform further hit-and-run attacks.

The Shadow Spectres
[spoiler]specialise in the deployment of stealthy, highly-mobile heavy firepower.

Shadow Spectres are armed with Prism Rifles, which pack the devastating long-range punch of the Prism Cannon into a man-portable package. They are garbed to appear as ghosts or wraiths, taking to the battlefield with jetpacks, holo-fields, and pallid Aspect Armour draped in thin, flowing, blue robes. The Spectre Shrine epitomizes the Eternal Warrior, for whom death is no release from duty.

The Shadow Spectres make use of a unique, complex targeting matrix known as the Ghostlight. This matrix further amplifies the effective range and power of the warriors' already-formidable weaponry.

When used, the Ghostlight will allow a Spectre squad to combine the beams of their Prism Rifles into a single, brilliant torrent of energy; the additional power allows the squad to fire a single incredibly long-ranged shot, allowing them to hit distant targets.

The firepower of a shot fired from the Ghostlight is also increased somewhat, but is much weaker than the squad's combined firepower had they fired their weapons independently. Even so, the drastic range increase allows a single Spectre squad to extend reach over the entire battlefield: two or three well-aimed, well-placed Ghostlight shots could severely cripple or outright destroy an opposing force's armoured support before the bulk of the battle has even been met.

The Exarch may study the secrets of the shrine to allow himself and any of his Aspect warriors to go beyond the normal Aspect training. Among others, he is skilled in calibrating the Ghostlight, allowing the squad to fire more accurately when the matrix is used. Exarchs are also skilled at judging the best opportunities for the squad to withdraw, regroup, and take up a new firing position.

Threats from the exterior exist, that is a fact. Another fact is that there are measures that could be taken to prevent them from being serious. Tikal's current capabilities against subversives and protecting the state had not been updated in a very long time, too long. If Tikal was perceived as weak, or if knowledge of this weakness became known, the risk of foreign espionage and attempts to influence the state's security would grow exponentially.

Thus, a secret Directorate was founded: the Directorate for Internal Security Co-Operation and Regional Defence. It was to reinforce the current, public Directorate of Intelligence, the focus of which was classic/conventional intel gathering using satellites, recon aircraft and so on. The new Directorate would be doing the dirty work. A number of agents were placed under the new agency while further recruits would be trained, specifically retired military as a prime target for recruitment efforts.

 

Three main tasks would be given to the Directorate, supplementing the DoI's efforts.

 

  • The protection of the state against dissidents: In practice, this meant that the Directoratae was authorised to use any force deemed necessary against perceived and confirmed dissident movements. The primary focus would be on foreign immigrants, radical nationalists and libertarians. To exercise these duties, permission to track movements of all citizens, intercepting any use of communication systems and even infecting computers with tailored trojans that would not be detected by AV-programs was given. Depending on the situation, arrests were possible, as well.
  • The protection of the state against foreign influences: Protecting against foreign influence and subversion was perhaps the cleanest of the three goals. It meant tracking down foreign operatives, taking them down by carefully arresting or eliminating them. This would prevent espionage or sabotage that could affect the Principality's security. In order to achieve this, the DoI would work in secret with the new agency, giving it access to databases on known and suspected foreign operatives and their contacts confirmed in the past.
  • Proactive protection of the state in foreign countries: Abroad, anything that could be kept secret was permitted. Gathering intelligence, spreading false information or partial truths, promoting anti-governmental movements or even revolutions that might help the Principality in the long run. All this and more was permitted, as long as the utmost was done to keep these activities secret from other nations. To achieve this, a considerable financial reserve, refilled yearly, was made available.

 

Officially, the Directorate's workers and agents were registered as part of the DoI or didn't exist at all in publicly available records.

Tikal's efforts to construct a thorough and multilayered SOSUS network continued apace. Already, the interior sections had been completed and much of the 'Central' and 'Southern' networks were in the works. It was estimated that, pending agreement from certain nations, the entire network might be fully operational within two years or so.

The following nations needed to give their agreement to permit the SOSUS to be lain into even their territorial waters:

  • Ecclesiarchy of Alaska
  • Tawantinsuyu
  • Palawen Empire
  • United States of America

Should they agree, they would be given access to data gathered by the Pacific or Atlantic SOSUS, depending on the coast they were located at. If one didn't agree, the SOSUS would have to be 'stopped' outside of their territorial waters, with appropriate measures taken to secure the buoys. Either way, the vast majority of America's naval traffic would come under Tikal's surveillance, allowing it to track fleet activities with ease.

Tikal's agents had been dispatched with all haste, as rumours of guerilla warfare were quite serious indeed.

Luckily, upon arrival it hadn't been too difficult for some agents to find out where the training was occurring, and with a few generous bribes to keep silence, had even located the recruiters. Pretending to feel sympathy for the recruiters, it was easy to find other collaborators and find out information from them.

 

Hawaii had illegally landed forces in Chile and Ecuador and was training them for war. This was a heavy breach of Tikal's 'Monroe Doctrine'. The agents were ordered to continue their investigation and find out more, if possible.

 

Detailed information of the guerilla camps, their locations, strength and so on would be required.

 

 

In the meantime, all Tikalian battlefleets were mobilised for heavy maneuvres some 2000 kilometres south-west from Baja California. Attack submarines were ordered to stalk around Hawaii's possessions, but keep away from known or suspected SOSUS networks, especially staying away from the so-called 'triangle of death'.

Two Ballistic submarines were ordered into the ocean west of the Ecclesiarchy of Alaska, to loiter while awaiting further orders. The third submarine was to take position 4,000 kilometres west of Chile, near Easter Island. All SSBNs had conventional warheads in 12 of their 16 tubes, the other 4 per sub armed with thermonuclear warheads. The conventional warheads used, among others, the latest high explosives or cluster munitions.

 

 

Privately, Japan, Babylon, Brazil, the Plains Federation and the USA would be informed of Hawaii's activities. They would also be asked to keep this information confidential until an announcement by Tikal condemning Hawaii.

The breach of Tikal's 'Monroe Doctrine' for a second time was inexcusable.

Harmony technology was beyond anything that had ever been seen in the world. Already, its effects could be felt throughout the Principality. The technology had enabled nano-medicine. Power plants delivering free energy beyond all imagination. Mobile suits using by hybrid power plants. Eldar and Aspect warriors. Advanced materials, nano-construction, space-travel and so much more.

Even portals to other worlds.

There was nothing fancy about it. The right application of harmonic energy could effortlessly tear open the space-time continuum and rip asunder the barrier between dimensions. Yes, the energies required to do this were absolutely staggering, beyond anything else created by human hands. But it was possible. And it had been done. In relatively small scale for now, but it had been done.

Many of the scientists participating in the successful experiment wondered what might happen if more energy was fed into the portal. What might happen if the frequency was changed this or that way. What if the number of Strings was varied? There were so many questions and no answers. Not yet.

A new research facility was constructed with relative swiftness, with a much larger room for a far greater portal.

The first test run of the implemented portal technology was short, lasting under five seconds. The result was massive. Unlike the original portal, which was of a soothing, electric blue colour, this had quickly grown into a gargantuan fiery sphere. Arches of fire were whipping over its surface as if it were a star. The heat in the room would have been oppressive, had it not been for sophisticated cooling systems throughout the room. Harmonic energies had been coursing through the room even beyond the flames. The containment systems, though vastly improved from the older versions, were found to be straining against the sheer power funnelled into the huge portal.

The run was declared a success, and preparations for a second, longer test were quickly made. The second and third Harmony Cores were added to the set-up, regulators for all three were adjusted. All systems were double-checked, even the most minor errors or problems were fixed in record time. Then came the moment for the second test.

"All personnel prepare for the second test of Project Solaris. T minus one minute. Please leave the test chamber. Personnel near the Harmony Cores must fully don their protective equipment. Please shut down televisions, microwaves and mobile computers for the duration. T minus thirty seconds. Please prepare for commencement of the test."

The seconds passed slowly as hundreds of researchers, engineers and scientists waited with bated breath. Some counted down in silence, others simply stared at monitors while waiting.

The automated activation cycle completed and Harmonic energies were diverted through the regulators and specialised funnels. In the main chamber, the energy from the three Cores pooled quickly, pouring into the gargantuan banks of harmonic capacitors. At the same time, massive machinery began rotating above and underneath the chamber's centre. As before, a trickle of harmonic energy was diverted through the rotators, or 'fans' as many had come to call them. Only moments later the capacitors began unleashing their stored power. The sound created by the event reverberated throughout the entire complex, shaking it.

The original portal device emitted a gentle hum when active. This new machine did emit sound, but deeper than audible for humans - infrasound. The walls shuddered and shook from the sheer force, though less than the first, audible sound. Then the gargantuan sphere came into existence from one moment into the next. Massive arches of red and yellow snaked around the sphere very much like solar prominences. Ethereal green lightning shot into regulative mechanisms, though some blazed their was along the walls and ceiling of the room, carving deep wounds into the heavily reinforced materials.

That's when everything went down the drain.

Shrapnel hit and damaged one of the massive fans, disturbing its distribution of Harmonic energy. The draw of power grew, straining the regulators beyond safety recommendations. Cracks appeared in their crystalline interior and a self-strengthening cycle began. As the regulators cracked, they became less efficient, permitting more Harmonic energy to escape, in turn empowering the portal. Over the course of three seconds, each core suddenly was harnessing as much power as the Tsar Bomba had unleashed upon detonation, and feeding it into the portal.

In a millisecond, sparks of Harmonic energy blasted through all of Tikal and into the aether, touching everything that had ever been exposed to this energy. In the moment after, all Harmonic energy gathered by the portal was unleashed all at once.

Though the shockwave travelled all around the globe four, perhaps even five times, there was little to no destruction visible after the event. It was as if Tikal had been utterly erased from time itself.

But it was not erased. Merely displaced. One moment, the space-time-continuum warped and distended impossibly. The next, the portal beneath Dawn and Dusk ceased functioning as an two nations became one, with all the technology, people and industrial prowess accompanying it.

In the space of a moment, a region housing 184 million had more than doubled in population. Cities had grown massively, entirely new settlements had come into being and much more. The resulting confusion would bring much of the nation to a halt for a time.

The letter was received by the Princess, and she wondered for a time what purpose it might have. Eventually, however, it was archived, to be forgotten.

 

A small fleet of vessels, including a helicopter carrier, made its way to Cuba. The island housed a facility that should've been removed from the face of the earth decades, if not centuries ago. Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.

 

Orders were to completely and utterly disable the facility, then returning the land to the provisional government controlling the south of Cuba. The people of the large island weren't united enough to become a player on the world stage, but there certainly was no anarchy there, or in any of Tikal's protectorates throughout the Americas. Well, in some parts, perhaps, but those surely were faraway from home.

 

Regardless, engineer corps and Zaku teams began to work on disassembling the base. Once they were done anyone who wanted to ever use it again, would have to rebuild it from scratch. Though this would take some months, the effort was considered worth it, this base being one of the most infamous facilities of its kind.

 

 

In other news, most forces overseas were brought home. Two hospital ships in Japan stayed where they were, container ships full of aid for the island nation arriving almost daily.

 

Tikal's navy, now with numerous new destroyers, corvettes and frigates added to it, was split into 5 fleets.

Aether and related assets of Tikal, in no particular order

Local AI unit; Kukulcan - Split over 3 bunker complexes, each set deep into the mountains of Tikal and connected using expensive ansible technology, this living machine is a fountain of knowledge and creativity. It is only possible thanks to quantum computing technology.

Local launch stations; Bifröst - Using a Maglev track of nearly 250 km total length and launching from the highest mountains in Tikal, then supported by directed laser array propulsion, these devices can deliver any payload into any orbit. Even living creatures, as the acceleration of 8g is deemed safe enough for even untrained passengers. Each system can deliver up to 70 tons of material into the aether per 2 hours, for just over 300,000 tons per year.

Tikal has 7 Bifröst systems in active use with 3 more on stand-by.

Various locations; Harmony Cores - An advanced method of generating power, besides many other applications. It is based on harmonic string technology, using unique crystals without which the process simply doesn't work. It can be scaled up or down with relative ease, though the largest cores may be unstable due to their sheer size. It is not recommended to build a core capable of generating a harmony field larger than 10 metres in diameter.

Medium Earth Orbit (MEO); Research Station 01 - Originally Tikal's first permanent asset in the aether, this station has since been disassembled, its materials recycled elsewhere.

Earth-Sol Lagrange Points 4&5 (ES L4&5) and various locations; Stanford Torus colonies Ihuicatl - Maximum population of 12,500 people, central spire 7,215 metres tall. Main torus diameter of 1 km, tube diameter of 130 metres. Torus shell thickness, 6 metres. Rotation speed sufficient for ~1g local gravity.

A total of 108 colonies have been built, the first 12 in L4 and L5 (6 each).

Various locations; Asteroid Mining Outposts - Specifications vary. These outposts provide Tikal with the resources it needs to expand into the solar system. Estimates regarding the worth of yearly mining operations exceed a revenue of 800 billion international dollars. Actual Profits - though all is invested in further expansion - would be around 8-10% of the revenue.

Dozens of asteroids are actively being mined, with new ones being added yearly while others are exhausted.

Various locations; Xaman'Ek aether craft - 300 metres long, maximum mass of 3,500 metric tons. Uses 'fusion torch' engines. ~30% (1,050 tons) is fuel. Cargo capacity of 1,300 tons, empty mass of 1,150 tons. The vessel is able to journey from Earth to Luna in 16 hours, or from Earth to Mars in 11 days, or from Earth to the L4&5 points within 9 days. It is the mainstay transport in the inner solar system. Maximum acceleration is 0.05g with a crew of 11 and a maximum safe transport capacity of 5,000 persons.

The total number of vessels is in the hundreds, if not thousands. Approximately four per 'IMU' (Ihuicatl Mass Unit) in the inner system are built.

ES L4&5 and various locations; Bernal class colony - Capable of safely housing up to 325,000 people, Bernal colonies are one of the more common habitats in the inner system. With a mass of nearly 42 IMU, a height of over 15 kilometres and a sphere diameter exceeding 3.5 kilometres, they are a sight to behold. The sphere's rotational speed is 1.9 rpm, sufficient to generate 1.2g at the equator. Latest advancements in technology resulted in hard-light shields generated using harmony technology which are able to protect the spheres from smaller asteroids under 0.4 metres in size.

L4 and L5 have 18 each, while there are another 12 located at various points in the asteroid belt.

GEO, Asteroid Belt, ES L4&5; Amoxtli class station - These stations are numerous and small. Their purpose is varied. In GEO and ES L4&5, they are the last stop before going into the solar system and act as refuelling stations. In the Asteroid Belt, they refine some materials that may otherwise be difficult to transport, and are hubs for off-duty miners who cannot move to larger habitats further away.

Hundreds of these exist throughout the solar system.

Various locations; Nu'kul Ich'saamal (Agent of Tomorrow) - 980 metres long, this massive vessel is the workhorse of the outer system. With an empty mass of 102,500 metric tons and a cargo capacity nearing 500,000 metric tons, it is capable of travelling from Earth to Saturn within 60 days. Engine-upgrades using the latest harmony technology may cut nearly a quarter off that number.

Sol-Jovian L4&5 points (JS L4&5); NuBernal class colony - Larger and in every way better than the old Bernal class colonies, these habitats can house 2,425,000 people with ease. Despite the massive size, they are less than twice as massive as the previous class, at 72.2 IMU. The height is 26.4 km, sphere diameter 5.32 km. The hard-light shields used for defence are more sophisticated, being multi-layered. These powerful shields can stop objects up to 2 metres in size, going at 4 km/s. Other defence systems are available to reduce larger objects to manageable chunks. If larger objects do get through, the shields can be angled in order to deflect the object using minimal energy. Hard light is funny that way.

4 habitats are located at each of the JS Lagrange points.

Asteroid Belt, JS L4&5; Yacuntah class defence station - Using Harmony technology, these relatively small stations - less than 50 metres in length - fire a beam infused with photons, x-rays and harmonic energy only 5 centimetres in width. Its destructive power is considerable if fired in longer bursts, on par with low-yield nuclear weapons. The beam's range is, thanks to the harmonic energy, almost 3 million kilometres. The crew is minimal with only 4 technicians. They are usually located within the shield-range of the station they protect.

Each Bernal-class and larger station has at least two Yacuntah stations.

With Palaven's collapse and the US once more trying to reach where they oughtn't, Tikal invited the Plains Federation to help protect the former Empire. A Carrier battlegroup was sent, accompanied by 5 infantry divisions and supporting personnel in order to a) keep the peace and b) keep the US from encroaching into too much territory.

"The Palaven Empire's former territories hereby are under Tikal's protection, as per the Monroe Doctrine. The Plains Federation is happily invited to aid in this endeavour. We would also like to ask the United States to refrain from trying to protect territory they have no direct border with."

King Wangchuck would write a classified letter to the Director of Diplomacy of Tikal, "Our people have taken note of the rise of your culture and technological expertise. We would like to start a cultural exchange program to better understand you in the belief that better mutual understanding is beneficial to the growth and maturity of all societies. That said we welcome Tikal to be the second nation with an embassy on our soil.. near hallowed ground at the base of Everest close to the seat. We'd also request that you not only appoint an ambassador of a diplomatic nature, but a second ambassador to represent your culture and society to work as an adjunct and consultant to our parliament to give it input and guidance on internal development of our great state. Also, the Dreamer would like to hold audience with the Sun and Moon, if they would feel his presence worthy. The Dreamer is a being of great religious significance among our people, he has taken the role of the Dali Lama in our culture, but is very respectful of your gods."
