The Mostly Harmless Newsletter Edition #47

Dear Planet Bob,
It's a new year and a new beginning for the Mostly Harmless Alliance. Imagine our utter surprise when the Don't Panic Staff managed to struggle - so, so slowly - out from under a large pile of empty bottles and stumble back to Hitchhiker HQ , only to find so many things have changed within these great halls and many exciting things are afoot.

So astounded, dumbfounded, and not just a little drunk still, we completely forgot to send out our usual Christmas edition of the newsletter. Still, in order to not seem so out of date we have decided to follow the Orthodox Calender this year so technically we're only a few days out from Christmas and New Year.

Yeah, that'll be a good enough excuse. Anyway, we begin 2012 with a catch up and a look out to the future:

Government Changes:
By: Dynasty
Julia Rose Vicious was elected for a third term as triumvir this month, causing our triumvirate not to change at all, and still consisting of Julia Rose Vicious, Doctor Doc, and gasgiant405. This month saw the resignation of our Minister of Towels, kingof theland, and the subsequent appointment of Dynasty as the new Minister of Towels. Dynasty quickly appointed Nath1194 as the Deputy Minister of Towels after assuming office. We also happened to see our Minister of Babel Fish, Cuba, leave this month, leaving his Deputy Minister of Babel Fish, Umbra, as the acting Minister of Babel Fish. The Ministries of Hitchhikers, Destructor Fleets, and Bad Poetry went unchanged this month with Anysound, Mr. Subliminal and Loki Grim, respectively, maintaining their ministerial seats and their deputies remaining the same. Last but not least, Edmonto was succeeded as Speaker by EarlofSandon.

You can check out our current Government line-up below.

Denzin Day Memorial
On January 4th, the MHA honored a very special and dear member of the alliance. It was three years ago that our Denzin sadly passed away and left a remarkable hole that could never be filled. As we do every year, Hitchhikers and friends gathered together to pay our respects and reflect upon our Greatest Hitchhiker.

Here's a few quotes from Denzin's memorial that show just how loved and missed the great man is:
It is a testament to Denzin's legendary leadership and skills that he is still honored and remembered by many MHA members to this very day - many of whom never even had the privilege of meeting him. When the alliance gathers to discuss and debate, we do so in "Denzin Square", named after this hoopiest of froods who always spoke so honestly and openly to the alliance - whether he was a regular member or a Triumvir. So great is his legacy that these three years later - when much has changed in our world - that the alliance can still speak so fondly of this great man as if he were here only yesterday.

Still saddens me to this day.

Such a tragic loss.

RIP mate.

I arrived just a little to late and was not afforded the privilege of meeting Denzin, but mentors always spoke highly of him. R.I.P to the lost Hitchhiker.

My fist contact with Denzin, was way back in Feb 2008, just after I had left TGE. I was being slaughtered by Tech Raiders, my RL friend Delmonte told me to come to MHA.

I told him I was at war, he said he had already cleared it. The next thing I knew someone called Denzin messaged me, telling me what to do and ended with, "just remember whatever you do DON'T PANIC."

Just after my attackers peaced out, one of them messaged me and said "if it wasn't for your big friends at MHA threatening us." I played dumb and wrote back pretending to know nothing about us.

I did get a reply, namely "you know fine well who it was, that Denzin guy threatened to use us as target practice if we continued to attack an MHA applicant."

A great man with a big heart and someone MHA will never be able to replace

RIP Denzin.

You are an inspiration to us all; may you live on forever in the hearts of Hitchhikers and CNers everywhere.

It was the group of individuals that were here because of Denzin that attracted me and many others to MHA. His name still comes up in IRC queries years after his death and I am not even in MHA any longer. The man has a very positive impact on the cybernations community as well as MHA.

Take Care lost Hitchhiker

It was a pleasure and honor knowing Denzin for the years we were in the MHA together and I'll always remember the work and effort he gave to this alliance. A great hitchhiker and a great friend indeed.
Belated Christmas Article:

As mentioned, we were so busy with that war nonsense and seasonal festivities, the MHA was unable to get our usual Christmas edition out on time and spread our Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster fueled holiday cheer. Yes, even while at war against several alliances, the MHA were still the hoopy frood, celebratory folk we always have been. As for the delay, perhaps we can't blame it all on the war - that wouldn't be fair. Perhaps we also hit the booze just a little too hard, a little too early? Perhaps we were all still waiting in line in department stores trying to get the latest "cool" toy so our rude, snot-nosed, spoilt nephew can have another thing he uses to avoid going outside and getting exercise.... Ahem.

Anyway, while the year is still young we'd like to wish all of you nation rulers out there in Planet Bob a very happy and productive 2012. And for those of you who received a lump of coal in your stockings, better luck next Christmas.

New Year's Resolutions Revealed:
As is customary for the end of a year, we sent out an invitation to many of Planet Bob's alliance leaders and notable characters to write down their New Year's resolutions for 2012. We wanted to know what hopes and dreams do the movers and shakers of this world have in mind.

Unfortunately everyone forgot to sign their names so you'll just have to work out for yourselves whom these belong to:

Post-War Commentary
War is going to burn your infra and shed those disloyal to the alliance - this is to be expected. No one is going to give you a Nobel Prize in Science for suggesting that prior to the war that MHA was unprepared for a long and losing conflict; that we had many nations who were inactive and leeching off of our AA; that we simply had never been in a losing position before.

But in our eyes at least - those comments now refer to the MHA of the past - the MHA prior to this war. Such comments will be irrelevant to the MHA we become.

Indeed, what the war has produced is a new kind of Hitchhiker Spirit. A reawakened, prepared, loyal group. It is with no small amount of irony that we note how those who attacked us have all been in this very same positions once or twice (or thrice) before themselves. What we chose to do in our future is still to come, but what's true right now - is that we can see a bright future and a long, long existence ahead for the MHA.

We hold no ill-will towards those who attacked us. Even MK have been welcomed, active posters in our forums again. We won't become the bitter, angry, revenge-driven monsters that others have become. We won't fill every discussion not about us about how so-and-so did this, so-and-so did that to us. You won't see the usual bile and verbal diarrhea that is customary for those who cannot accept their loss and defeat.

As always, we will hold our heads high and simply move on. Whatever hope there was to destroy MHA can be forgotten; the Hitchhiker will rise again.

Shout Out To Some Brave And Loyal Friends
Going into this war, it was always clear that MHA would likely lose. Despite this, we have been honored and humbled by the loyalty of our friends to assist us despite the assured defeat. Those who came despite treaty conflicts and despite knowing the odds stacked against us show the strength of their character and exemplary friendship. Traits many thought long-dead in this realm.

It is with great honor that we at Don't Panic wish to give our thanks to the following alliances.

Not to mention the countless messages of support from friends, former friends, former members, and enemies alike.

Each of these alliances have shown unwavering support and friendship throughout this conflict and are to be commended for their loyalty and sacrifices. It is too early yet for us to be pinning awards on these brave hearted chests but rest assured, the MHA will remember your dedication and your tireless defense for years to come.

Liked the New Years Resolutions, but surely it is a sign of a times of how they are a lot mild than some other classified ads, etc. :)

Good luck to the True Hitchhikers remaining and repairing the alliance from within.

Nice edition!

Shame I can't think of a good entry for the caption. The memories of that reindeer pizza, that reindeer soup, and especially that excellent reindeer stew I had in Finland a few years ago block out all inspiration :)
