Then I learned that 90% of the people who'd say it to me over a single action in the political arena either already had a !@#$ opinion of me to begin with or had positive feelings that didn't run very deeply after all. Because to get me to actually change my opinion of someone I respect requires a very long pattern of decisions, and pretty significant decisions like going from being someone I trusted implicitly to being someone who is trying to hurt me without my actually having done anything to you (I've screwed up occasionally, and make allowances for people in those situations). Signing a treaty might excite me or tick me off in the moment based on political alignment, but it's not going to change my long term opinion of anyone. So I stopped letting it bother me. Going into PM when there is a very strong chance you will get hit, then popping out to choose your targets is a smart strategy, though.
