Currently, Karlskrona AB Malmo Division has been looking at possible replacements for the Swedish Arsenal Ship for a future replacement program, one of the products of that design competition that was presented, was the Thunderer-class Battleship. This ship fulfills most of your design requirements, including the VLS tube requirements, large caliber gun requirements (400mm Dual Cannons), as well as the ability to engage air, surface, and submerged targets with a satisfactory survivability rating.

The armor on the vessel is a composite slurry that is sandwiched between titanium plates, offering superior armor qualities against kinetic energy penetration weapons, as well as normal high explosive rounds and armored piercing rounds. While the armor is not impervious, it offers much more protection then normal defensive armor available on most warships these days. The armor is thickest around critical areas, including command and control areas, aviation facilities, and the engineering spaces, at 150mm, the rest of the ship features about 100mm of the same type of composite slurry/titanium plate mix.

The ship has a large amount of smaller caliber guns to deal with relevant asymmetric threats including attacks from small boats, as well as the ability to work in a CBRN environment. The tear-drop shape of the ship, which tapes to a large stern, provides stability for the gun, as well as stabilizing the gun against heavy seas. The ability to fully withstand a small nuclear blast at close range and remain operational is questionable, but depending on the strike location, the vessel has a high probability of being able to avoid being capsized.
"In the interests of developing further nuclear attack submarine capabilities, the Swedish National Navy has authorized the commissioning of two new Walrus-class Nuclear Multipurpose Attack Submarines to replace two of its Hengist-class Nuclear Attack Submarines. The construction of these vessels will be undertaken at Karlskrona AB Home Division's facilities in Karlskrona. It is expected that these vessels, while not being able to carry quite the amount of torpedoes, cruise missiles, or anti-ship missiles, will instead provide more heavy anti-ship missile capabilities. The vessel is also expected to be more automated then its counterparts, thus reducing the size of the crew complement, while increasing efficiency with new systems, and what could amount to deeper operating depth capabilities.

With the ongoing purchase of heavier vessels, and the possibility of heavier arsenal ships being deployed by other nations, the Swedish National Navy hereby requests that Karlskrona AB Malmo Division to begin development of two all-new battleship vessels, with increased vertical launched system capabilities. The development of these vessels has a low priority rating at the moment, with a three year development and construction phase expected, with the option for an acceleration period if tensions begin to develop that warrant the completion of these vessels."

Altough it is a bit smaller than the former Dalian, and has only 15 cm armor at its best, the Compagnie would be interested in the ship. Though, we'd still be interested in the speed and dimensions of the ship, as well as its displacement. After all, it also defines its performance in different environments.

At this point, I would also ask for the construction cost and time.

With Regards,
Georgette Lemare
OOC: I don't think a ship with 15 cm armor and of smaller size will have a displacement of 120,000 tons. And if your generators propel a ship of 120,000 tons at 30 knots, I don't want to know what will happen with this 'lightweight'.

And it's a pity the armor was downsized. :(

The current length of the vessel in question is rated at 220m, while its beam is at 55m, the displacement, with an average load of weaponry, crew, and stores is rated at about 85,000-90,000 Tons. As advertised in its design, the vessel can make around 33 knots maximum speed, and can cruise around 22-24 knots, depending on sea conditions, of course. The Thunderer-class has a draft rated around 10m, with a 9m maximum navigational draft.

The total cost of the vessel, given its capabilities, heavy armament, electrical and network systems for fire control, armor, reactors, and sensor/processing systems, is expected to run around $9 Billion, or about 63 Billion SEK. To construct a vessel this large usually requires a year and a half to two years, depending on yard and material availability.

"With the recent doctrinal changes, and battle experiences being applied to the Swedish National Navy's current battle and operational plans, Karlskrona AB Malmo Division has begun research and development into possible heavy command and control vessels for the Swedish National Navy. These vessels would provide multiple command services as well as be able to defend itself in a hostile maritime environment. As part of Project Blackout, these vessels will be able to perform these functions, as well as engage in electronic warfare, fleet defensive countermeasures, psychological operations, coordination of joint special operations forces, as well as serve as amphibious operation command vessels."

"In an effort to bolster the Swedish Frontier, the Commission of Defense hereby transfers 18th Motorized Rifle Division and the 5th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the 10th Army of the Norrland Military District. At its revised strength, the 10th Army will see a doubling of its regular forces' strength with this addition, and gives Northern Sweden an amphibious capacity. With this change effective, the 18th Motorized Rifle Division is ordered to conduct border patrols along the Swedish-Finnish frontier in the next calendar month, to acclimatize itself to its new region of operations once it has entered its new garrison.

On an unrelated note, the Commission of Defense can happily report that all of its Fighter Groups, not using the SAF-1, have been upgraded to the SAF-9 or SAF-9, Block II, all SAF-44s have been put into active reserve, and training hours are to continue to be logged on these aircraft. SAF-9, Block Is will slowly be replaced by Block IIs, with the former being put into active reserve or training formations. The Commission of Defense has also contracted Saab Aerospace with the construction of stealth external conformal weapons pods for the Union's newest strategic bomber, the SAB-101, which will increase the load of these aircraft 'significantly'."

"The 411th Electronic Warfare Group is hereby ordered to redeploy four of its SARC-135 Strategic Reconnaissance Aircraft to Nordenskiold Air Force Base north of Uppsala for mandatory patrols of the Southern Baltic and Gulf of Bothnia. These reconnaissance aircraft will fly twelve hour shifts of two, and will be used in conjunction with the ongoing operations of the two 135s posted in Umea, and have mandatory loose escorts to provide them with security, as well as refueling aircraft to allow for their long flights. Two further SARC-135s are ordered to Spitsbergen Air Force Base, and will conduct regional strategic reconnaissance flights, with the same support aircraft.

These aircraft will support the LEO Satellite Intelligence Grid, which has recently been re-aligned to reflect Sweden's areas of interest more stringently. Analysts from the Commission of Defense, the Swedish Defense Forces Intelligence Service, and the Special Reconnaissance Group will be provided with pertinent imaging, electronic, and signals intercepts, and hereby ordered to engage in joint intelligence activities due to recent regional and worldwide conflicts.

Reflecting volatility across the globe, and the potential for conflict, the Defense Forces are ordered to quietly enact STRATCON (Strategic Condition) FOUR levels. All ongoing training exercises are to continue without interruption, and mandatory fighter patrols are to continue without strength increase, on-call intercept and alert squadrons are to reflect the changing STRATCON level. National Navy Submarine forces are also ordered to acknowledge this STRATCON change, and go to their typical alert stations. Reflecting the volatility of the Americas, the 7th Motor Rifle Division is ordered to STRATCON THREE levels, and are to bolster standard patrols around their expeditionary garrison facilities on Hispaniola and be ready to respond to possible regional security developments."

"CybAero's Teranis Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle has begun limited service with the Swedish Defense Forces, these autonomous drones will serve as supersonic-cable, stealthy light attack aircraft, as well as serve as intelligence gathering aircraft. It is expect that these aircraft will begin working alongside SAU-47C aircraft that are already in service, and will eventually replace the latter in frontline autonomous light attack duties.

On an unrelated note, in conjunction with a normal security alert and possible increased Finnish military activity, the Swedish Defense Forces are to transfer the 1st Guards Army along with the 8th Army from the Western Military District, and the 7th Mechanized Division from Blekinge County, to advanced forward positions in Northern Sweden. These units will reinforce troops already in the region, all reserve formations are to mobilize for mandatory and standard procedure patrols along the Swedish Frontiers of Northern Norway and Finland. Movements of large forces will be restricted to the darkness hours, and Volksjager Formations are to take up their forward patrol and observation point positions along the frontier borders. Artillery and armored formations, minus infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, are to be kept a distance from the border.

AWACs, strategic reconnaissance, and fighter patrols are to steadily increased at an acceptable rate, and any intelligence or incursion into Swedish airspace is to be dealt with with a warning, followed by active engagement. The Norrland and Skanderna Military Districts are hereby ordered to go to STRATCON THREE, and be ready for impending conflict should any problems arise with this increased Finnish military activity. The Swedish Baltic Squadron is to undertake normal patrol operations with its surface and submersible vessels, while the Swedish Grand Fleet is to observe a status of alert, and go to preplanned patrol positions in the North Sea for the time being."

Salutations,

Karlskrona AB recently reopened its facilities in Malmo for work, and can take on this project, granted that it will take a little bit longer due to current ship production output in Sweden, we can accept this order, and its financial terms with no problem, and can have all three battleships delivered within a year and a half, with the first being available in a year. If these terms are acceptable to you, we will begin processing the order and building the vessels. To reduce tooling costs, the SeaRAM emplacements on the vessel will be built with our standard reduced visibility turret.

Thank you for inquiring to build these vessels in Sweden, and doing business with Karlskrona AB, we await your final reply and go ahead to start these vessels.

"In an effort to continue to ensure the best protection available to its combat vehicle crews, the Swedish Defense Forces have begun to employ various types of composite add-on armor kits to its vehicles, with key mission specifics. Many Swedish combat vehicles already employ various armor systems to provide a high degree of protection, but this new legislation will prompt that vehicles are fitted specifically before missions to ensure they are using the best armor systems that is available.

Already, many vehicles already employ slat armor to protect against point-detonating handheld missile systems, but Sweden will begin to also employ its already combat-tested AMAP systems, which will replace the MEXAS armor kits that have been employed. High density armor kits will be employed to various portions of the vehicle that are designed to break up kinetic-energy-penetrating rounds, already employed in environments where tank-on-tank battles are a definite possibility. These systems will be used for various situations, with some systems being employed in combination with others. This move is expected to increase the force protection of Sweden's mechanized forces, and increase vehicle and crew survivability."

"Kiruna Weapons Testing range has finished the first of several experiments with Ericsson's newest patented defense system, codename Velentr, which has undergone various environmental scale experiments at Kiruna's laboratory facilities and the testing range itself. Utilizing several composite materials, including magnesium diboride layered with various negative index metamaterials, the system has undergone several tests to test its vulnerabilities to environmental wear and tear, as well the defense system being tested in conjunction with other composite and traditional armor systems. These tests included resistance to electromagnetic pulse technology, as well as its survivability in a battlefield setting.

The needed power input for these systems makes its tactical deployment one that is impractical, but it appeared to pass through basic battlefield condition testing with enough survivability to be employed in vital defense infrastructure. Of course this is completely irrelevant due to the needed power requirements in order to make this system effective, which would limit it to hard command and control, as well as vital government and defense installations about the nation. Kiruna will conduct full-scale model fixed position tests within the next fortnight, release its findings and suggestions, but this system is expected to be able to be applied on a small scope within the nation's vital defense infrastructure."

"The Swedish National Navy hereby requests Karlskrona AB to investigate the possibility of constructing a submarine tender and replenishment ship for Sweden's submarine forces. This replenishment vessel must have the ability to replenish diesel submarines with fuel while still submerged and moving, this will require coordination software, as well as the right equipment to perform the operation, as well as modifications to our current diesel submarines. Tests have so far proven to be promising, other requirements will include being able to transfer stores to surfaced submarines, as well as weapons.

We have our faith that Kockums will be able to provide us with the right solutions, as per their usual high standards."

Rushungi Naval Base
Southern Tanzania

Despite being a submariner, Captain Maria Holm had always had a fascination with the naval aviation branch of the Swedish National Navy, with their huge ships and tough pilots who were some of the best aviators that Sweden could field. Having been promoted to command of the nuclear attack submarine, SUS Horsa, after serving as the skipper of the diesel ultraquiet SUS Roos, Maria had found herself in charge of the naval task force that had run the newest additions to the Swedish fleet, five Indefatigable-class fleet carriers, from Cambodia across the Indian Ocean to allied Tanzanian waters. Holm had been given a field promotion to flag captain for the task, and she sailed aboard the Indefatigable, while the Horsa, along with another nuclear attack sub, sailed beneath them protectively. The Cambodians had been nice enough to provide a solid escort of destroyers for their journey, which was made without incident, in the company of a duo of replenishment vessels, which were carry hardware and equipment meant for the two carriers.

With the ongoing conflict in Finland, the delivery of these carriers to the homeland would have to wait until after the war was over, so they would take up residence in Rushungi Naval Base until they could make the journey with a heavier escort, a heavier escort which was not available at the moment. The Swedish shipbuilding firm, Kockums, had sent down two strategic airlifters full of technicians and equipment for the carriers. The eclectic mix of vessels had been joined by a repair depot ship, the SUS Restore, which would help with the modifications to the carriers which were to be made. Maria tore her eyes away from the mix of workers and naval personnel milling about on the deck below, and turned her attention to a group of technicians behind her, both from the Navy and from Kockums.

"How's it going?" asked Maria, as she moved over to one of the naval technicians, a warrant officer by the name of Hamilton, who was looking over the shoulder of a Kockums technician.

"We've been able to install the software on the new computer systems, but we're having a bit of trouble synchronizing the battle management software," replied Hamilton, turning to look at the young Captain, with an unsure look on his face.

"The Combat Information Center has been having the same problem, not sure what the issue is," nodded the Kockums technician.

"Communication between the two alright?" asked Maria, as she leaned over the technician's shoulder.

"Yeah, we got green communication between all the vessels in Rushungi that is armed with the NORDCOMM, but the battle management software for all five carriers isn't synching up correctly," nodded Hamilton, shrugging his shoulders.

The technician sat back for a moment, and thought, before leaning forward again, then looking up at the duo, "What if the weapon systems aren't synched up properly, because the NORDCOMM doesn't recognize the weapon systems these carriers employ? Almost all of our vessels are armed with tri-pack CIWS now, if not SeaRAM, they've never had to deal with the old CIWS turrets, perhaps its a software recognition problem."

"Wouldn't that be resolved after the installation of the new guns?" asked Maria, as she looked at the technician.

"Yes, skipper, I believe it would."

"Well then, looks like you need to wait a couple days then," nodded Maria, with a grin, as the technician stood up.

"I'll contact the other technical staff about this, looks like we found our problem," nodded the Kockums technician, putting on a headset, and stepping outside to talk with the other technical staff that was troubleshooting the issues on board the other carriers.

"Halfway around the world, and our country is in the fight of its life back home," sighed Maria, as she sat down on the almost deserted bridge, tiredly rubbing her face.

"You sound like you want to be in that fight," observed Hamilton.

"I do, I'm used to be on the front line of the naval service, ahead of the fleet, being part of the silent service," responded Maria, as she leaned back in the chair she had taken a seat in.

"Things in Somalia are heating up pretty heavily."

"I noticed, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we don't get involved, we don't need to be stuck out here with no reinforcements and no escorts if we have to break camp here in Tanzania," noted Maria, as she looked out of the open hatch to their right at the lush green East African coastline.

With the surrender of Finland secured, and after the request made by the Swedish Government, most of Finland's Air Force complied with the orders to surrender equipment to the Swedes, taking off from their bases to fly their aircraft to Sweden. Although in a couple cases, some zealous pilots tried to instead shoot down Swedish aircraft when they came forward to visually inspect the Finnish aircraft for any weaponry they did not dump. One Swedish aircraft was lost in one of these scattered treacherous engagements, out of five such incidents, each time the Finnish aircraft was dispatched by attending fighters and no harm came to any of Sweden's personnel or equipment. The F-18Cs, and the mixture of Finnish transport and airborne gunships were escorted into the interior of Sweden, and once on the ground, the pilots and crews were detained without incident, and interned in normal barracks in an empty army encampment north of Lake Vanern.

At sea, the seaworthy vessels of the Finnish Navy would also be interned without incident, the battle-scarred battlecruiser Talvisota, as well as the landing vessels would be taken directly to Stockholm after their crews were transferred to auxiliary Swedish National Navy vessels. Sweden has also amassed stockpiles of weaponry from the surrendering Finnish forces at Oulu, taking stocks of ammunition, artillery, and anti-tank rounds and impressing it into Swedish service as the Slavorussian counteroffensive against Oulu began. Leopard 2A4s from the Finnish 3rd Armor that were not damaged beyond repair would also be refurbished in the field by support and replenishment units, given add-on armor kits, and given to crews who had lost their own mounts, these tanks would mainly be given to the tankers of the 6th Marines, which had lost a number of its tanks engaging the Finnish 8th Infantry.

The Swedes also stockpiled thousands of infantry weapons, including machineguns, assault rifles, shotguns, MANPADS anti-armor systems, and more in Oulu for the coming battle, making weapons caches in the city, and its suburbs. Many platoons requested extra anti-armor weaponry, and many were allotted extra Finnish systems, doubling their anti-tank stocks of weaponry rather quickly with the acquisition of these weapons. As the battles raged around them, supply and replenishment personnel repaired Finnish weaponry, or handed it out to give Swedish Defense Forces units extra firepower for the coming battles.

With the fall of the The Solar Kingdom, and the completion of its naval contract, six vessels; two destroyers, two cruisers, and two upgraded battlecruisers were mothballed at the new Lake Malaren Naval Auxiliary and Reserve Station (NARS). Considering the vessels were to be paid off over an extended period, these vessels would be kept as collateral for the loss, and would be pending foreign sale or possible assignment to the Swedish fleet in the event a vessel of the same classification was lost. Lake Malaren Naval Auxiliary and Reserve Station was built as one of the main bases for the Swedish Naval Auxiliary, to host vessels in a protected body of water away from the coast.

As it was a freshwater body of water, maintenance would be lightened on the vessels being mothballed, which were assigned what the Swedish National Navy termed "weekend" crews, which were rotating crews of auxiliary personnel that would maintain the vessel on a weekly basis. Electronic systems would be checked, engines would be turned over and run for an hour to keep them in running shape, which would have an effect of defraying maintenance costs over the long term. Technical students from local community colleges would work on the ships with certified maritime engineer technicians from the naval auxiliary, in exchange for government work-study credits at their schools, which could help pay for their educational costs.

Already playing host to a number of vessels from the auxiliary and reserve fleet, Malaren NARS was a fine example of the streamlining of the Swedish Defense Forces, which was looking to improve its efficiency wherever it could.
