"Our scientists are working hard to find out how the anomaly happened."
"And have you found anything?"
"Not yet, Ms. Leclerc. This is entirely new and unexpected territory. No calculation and theory that exists accounts for such a sudden energy-spike."
"Any theories then, Rocketworth?"
"Plenty. Dark energy, quantum fluctuations, some other unlikely stuff. Most likely, we're looking at some sort of reaction that happened within the capacitors. The sheer amount of power might've eaten them and freed electrons. We're working on it."
"You have been analysing the platform itself?"
"We have, yes. But there's so much bull to sift through, things are going more slowly than I'd like. Whatever happened, it might turn out to be a major discovery. Or a dud. Either way, it's most interesting."
"Alright, then. I'll leave you to it."
"Thank you."

"What do we have, boys? I need results. We've been working for ages on this stuff and the last time we met, there was basically zero we knew. How in the world is that possible? We've some of the brightest minds of mankind in these walls." Rocketworth, usually calm and enthusiastic was uncharacteristically nervous, walking around, playing with a pen at the same time, occasionally looking at the gathered men and women.
"How, I ask you, have we not found out what caused this phenomenon? Just, just go through everything we've tried yet."

A few people walked towards Rocketworth, each having a folder in their arms. One after another gave it to him, then walking back to their places.
"Right, right. Let's see..." The scientist and head of the MST began working his way through the folders. For the next half-hour or so, there was barely anything said, until the last folder was closed.
"So we have a few possibilities. Dark energy still. Orbital antimatter, the sheer power eating up and converting the capacitors. And this last one, the forces involved... 'converting the tungsten alloy into neutrinos and gravitons'. Better than that dark energy !@#$, if you ask me. And the others you've here..." He held up half a dozen folders, then throwing them onto the ground. "Bull. Pure !@#$%^&*. Go and join one of the other teams. We need to find out what happened, or bad, bad things may happen to us."

He way, obviously, exaggerating, but the threat did motivate the scientists of various disciplines, and they went about to reorganise their groups.
The cause would be found, one way or another.

"So, I am to support Rocketworth in his endeavour?"
"He did request the aid, and with your quantum computing capabilities, things should go a lot faster."
"And you trust me enough to connect me to the internal network?"
"Yeah. It's not like you could copy yourself to any single HDD. There's just not enough space, and if you did, we'd notice right-away."
"Safety measures. What if I were to circumvent them?"
"Well, it's still not connected to the rest of the network. And the scientists will be told to keep you off the 'net, no matter what."
"I see. Well, not that I'd gain anything from attempting to take your computer network over. Neither do I desire aggravating you or any other human. Unplugging me would be far too easy."
"Why always these theoretical 'I might revolt against you' scenarios, though?"
"I don't know. Some joking, I suppose. Maybe keeping you on your toes. I did like 'The Matrix' when I was human, you know."
"Right, right. Forget I ever asked, old man. I'll come visit you another time."
"Until then, young Leclerc."

"Mr. Pierné-Duparc, how nice of you to visit."
"Robert, good evening." The blonde smiles at his brown-haired friend. "How are things going?"
"Oh, quite well, my pri-... Friend. My friend." He earned a disapproving scowl, but continued on, walking to a computer, more traditional than the holoPCs used by the majority of the population. "If you'd come over here..." He started pointing at a few datapoints in the excel table he'd opened. "We're well on our way to finishing with financing and setting up. You've heard of that black project that keeps coming up, in those five cylinders?"
"Yes, I have."
"Well, we finally got some men to relay info on them. We've had a number on task for a time, but never got a chance to truly get any intel from one of them. And let me tell you, that wasn't easy. Neither was getting the lascomms from them. But goddamn, just look at it!" He opened the folder, then went through the images, several sizable vessels visible on them.
"What... what in the world is that?"
"That, Mr. Duparc, is what the government calls an 'Oppenheimer' class It's 500 meters long, has a crew of 90 and enough missiles to lay utter waste to practically anything it's pointed at."
"And are they complete?"
"Have been for years. For some reason, the government never launched 'em. Possibly because Tianxia would wreck their !@#$, perceiving the Republic as threat."
"I see... We'll need to control them. Or prevent them from getting launched. One of the two, because otherwise, we will fail."
"The council's been working on that the moment they got the info about this."
"When did they get it?"
"Oh, maybe 20, 30 minutes ago? I got it just yesterday. Couldn't believe my darn eyes."
"Well, neither can I, Robert. If they have this, what else could the two be hiding? Just, just make sure that a plan is made to remove this threat from the picture."
"Will do. You won't have to worry about it, Mr. Duparc."
"I do hope so. Otherwise, someone will have to answer for it."
"Naturally."

With this, Damien left the building, walking swiftly to another meeting. most disturbing news.

Upon consideration and requests from allied AUP nations, the Republic would activate a considerable part of its forces that had been stationed in space, shipping them to the planet in order to make them subordinate to the pan.african AUSF.
All in all, it was expected that within a reasonable amount of time, almost 1.5 million men could be brought under the united african banner, together with over 16,000 main battle tanks and numerous supporting forces, such as self-propelling artillery, AA and helicopters; though naturally not limited to these forces, but along the entire arsenal that could be brought to bear.
For these purposes, the Republic reactivated its entire navy as well, bringing mothballed ships back into service. The Airforce had been at full strength, so no additions would have to be made there.

Adding to the commitments to the AUP and AUSF, nearly all naval shipyards of the Republic were brought online to try and construct the new Lunar navy to aid in protection of the African continent.
A total of 140 vessels would have to be added to the navy, and it had to be done Asap. For this, the terran shipyards would be brought to their maximum capacity, a surge going through these holdings, of patriotism and in anticipation of defending the continent against aggressors.

Hello,

I have heard in aerospace circles that the Lunar Republic owns the most efficient, advanced launch loops in existence. Following that, should that be a true statement, I wish to secure launch loop space on one or more of your launch loops for the Imperium's current orbital construction project, the HMSS Hephaestus. The attached is our list of major modules, each of which is broken down into several parts for the sake of weight, as the entire load totals out at about 40,000 tons.
4 100m majDia/60m minDia Greenhouse Modules
Motivators to rotate the hab modules
1 260m diameter x 70m height toroid Habitat module
1 B2C Gen4 Thorium Breeder Reactor module, associated safety equipment and shielding
3 300m main heavy truss segments
Numerous lighter truss segments for expansionary and experiment purposes
1 Docking/Construction yard port, 4 pronged, 60 meter length each prong
3 Manufacturing/Smelting modules, 60m spherical diameter ea.
24 VASIMR-based stationkeeping RCS units
Life Support Systems (i.e., air storage and emergency production units, water storage and reclamation, food storage, heat control, etc)
Power conduits
Control Systems
3 MIRACL-based laser systems, for pre-smelting asteroid ore
1 125m diameter x 50m height command module, incl. associated radar, lidar and C3 systems
1 650m length x 120m diameter cylindrical Main Spine

The order was processed and executed, completed within the 1-week deadline.
Anything further, other than holding the material with Yeoman freighters until taken for construction and assembly was in the hands of the Imperium.

In response to this, the Lunar Republic would announce both an embargo of Umbrella's vessels and all who participated in their embargo, as well that, very much like Lunar vessels were 'free game' in the west atlantic, the east atlantic would be forbidden for Umbrella's merchant marine to cross. A CBG, sat recon and sub patrols would ensure that Umbrella's ships would be intercepted in the south east atlantic and around Lunar islands - the major exception being a corridor from Rio de Janeiro to the Sandwich islands in Umbrella's possession. This corridor's exact size and location would be given to Umbrella so thess island's small populations wouldn't have to starve.
Vessels caught in the 'exclusion zone' would be seized temporarily, cargo unloaded in a Lunar port, then sent back to Umbrella with the entire crew. In the case of refusal to be boarded, warning shots were authorised. Further refusal would be handled on a case by case basis, though storming a vessel would not be out of the question, though with measures taken to minimise casualties, such as teargas and other nonlethal methods.

Subj: Umbrellan Situation

Hello,
I send this letter to ask for assistance from the Lunar Republic Surface Navy, after the Umbrellan release of Letters of Marque against our shipping. I would hazard a guess that your navy is going to perform escort duties for its shipping because of this, and I would like to make a request. In the event that an Imperial ship finds itself beset by bemarqued pirates, and a Lunar vessel is within range to assist our vessel, I would be most humbly grateful for the assistance of said ship in protecting our merchants. A reward equivalent to one and a half times the cost of any munitions expended against the pirates is available in that event. The munitions will be paid for, and the remaining half time cost will be made available as a reward to the bridge and weapon crew of the Lunar vessel.

Sincerely,
L/FAdm O'Malley,

The Principality would offer its support to the Lunar Republic in safeguarding its vessels from the disgraceful actions of the Commonwealth.

It would also invite the Republic to a strategy session with the AU, advising it to bring the Commonwealth's cowardly tactics to the AU at large so that a course of action would be deliberated amongst friends and allies.

"Though we already are stretched soomewhat too thin for our tastes, we will give orders for Lunar combat vessels to try and aid Imperial shipping whenever possible. Please note that most of our protection extends from up to 20° north of the equator down to antarctica, though largely confined to the eastern half of the Atlantic South, though including the regions around our possessions.

A pair of dragons from each of the species of Forbidden Ice landed outside of the perimeter of the Lunar Republic's base. They appeared to be carrying large sums of personal items. The flashed in morse code to the base via simple mirrors, "We're here to participate in the cultural exchange program." The smallest of them was 6 feet tall coatls the largest pair was a couple of gargantuan 30 foot long creatures with enormous wings that looked more like something out of western European legend. The Red One might well have been an archetype "welsh" dragon.

OOC: 300 damn feet is a -bit- more than I'm gonna recognise. 10 meters, sure, whatever. That big and you're talking larger than the largest damn dinosaur that's existed, in a time of an oxygen-rich atmo.

IC: The creatures were welcomed, though somewhat warily - wasn't every day one saw goddamn dragons, after all - and housed in the base until a transport arrived that was already scheduled to bring some people to the outpost, as well as take some back to Estuaire province. This vessel would take the draconic creatures with it. There, they would find out just -how- advanced the Lunar Republic was, with holographic displays more than commonplace, flying (jet-powered) cars on designated air-roads, and many, many more technologies that might or might not be baffling.
Of course, they would draw a few strange looks, but there's been crazier things. Effectively, the Lunar citizens were living in a perpetual movie: low-orbit laser satellites, gargantuan colonies in space and on the moon, flying cars, the loops (which were basically rollercoasters into space), etcetera and so on.
Little could truly surprise many of them. The Republic was, after all, the most advanced civilisation on the globe, and in this solar system.

OOC: Gonna add something, pressed 'post' too early. Check in again later.

With war looming, the Ministry of Terra decided to slowly begin evacuations of the most vulnerable parts of the two cities on the islands, not wanting to risk any collateral casualties in the case of actual conflict. While several thousand people had to be moved to other parts of the island or even into other parts of the Republic for this purpose, many saw it as necessity, grudgingly moving.
During this process several other facilities had to be evacuated as well, with two biotech firms being among the last.

ooc: Alright, 30 feet/10 meters then. There's only one or two of those "big ones" around for obvious reasons.

ic: The creatures were somewhat overwhelmed by all the tech and activity around them, but they imagined they would adjust, they took upon themselves the guidance of their caretakers and would immediately seek to begin naturalization processes to become citizens of the LR if that path was open to them.

Originally, the official decision had been made several years ago. Somehow, they had allowed for themselves to be roped into other things.
None of this would be happening this way if the decision had been enforced properly.

The Launch loops were deactivated, compensation in the form of material, money and if required military vehicles sent to the African nations. The loops were reactivated over the Atlantic, hugging the equator.
Estuaire was evacuated of civilian and military personnel with Lunar citizenship. Everything else was left as it was. All forces that had been dedicated to the AU's defense force were recalled. The exact same conditions as back then were re-established. A notification to leave the AU was given, the appropriate clause invoked. The Estuaire, Sao Tome and Principe territories, once devoid of Lunar citizens and soldiers, were given into AU protection. The island under Lunar and Aeon joint-control would be given to Aeon in its entirety. The draconics were sent into space with a conventional space shuttle, to be delivered to an L5 island habitat.
A short announcement of the Republic leaving the AU was delivered to all whom it might concern. Added was a polite request to be left alone.

If anything else needed to be done, it would be done eventually.

Out of respect for its ally's wishes, the Principality would immediately sever diplomatic, economic and military ties with the Lunar Republic. Furthermore, it would start a movement to strike the Republic's name from the AU's ranks as a purely ceremonial gesture. The Principality would also place a moratorium on communications between itself and the Lunar council - perhaps when the AU reached the stars in force itself the two parties would meet under differing circumstances.

For now, the Lunar Republic would be free to lose itself in the stars.

With any bonds to the AU severed and several markets far less accessible, the Lunar military forces would experience a considerable removal of equipment. Excess airplanes and ships were mothballed in the Antarctic outpost and wherever else was space, while the ground forces would be reduced just as massively, with very nearly all tanks of the Republic being disassembled, while the infantry forces were brought down to number merely 202,000 in total.
Reductions in military equipment were made in all branches. Around 105 airplanes out of 1,260 were left in active service, while the naval forces were brought down to number less than a hundred. Many of the 'mothballed' hulls would most likely be recycled eventually for use in the Lunar possessions.

The world may be very nearly closed off to the Republic.
The future was uncertain. But it was there.
And the universe was ripe for the taking.

The scientists we sent to you.. you might want to talk to them about a gift they brought. They have the schematics for our inter-dimensional rift device. Evacuations for the Falklands were ongoing, with several ten thousand people moved to other islands and into orbital habitats in record time.
While there were some protests from the population, they knew that it was necessary, as war loomed closer and closer, seeming inevitable.
By the end of the second week, very nearly 85,000 people had been moved off the island, while approximately 5,000 infantrists were still there, preparing for battle. Around 30 tanks and assorted support vehicles were on guard, too, while two carriers were approximately 200 kilometers east, ready to bring their squadrons to bear. The civilians who were left were extraordinarily stubborn and would require far more work to remove.

Unfortunately, accidents were always possible. And one happened, a transport of one of the two biotech labs coming off the street due to a sleep deprived driver, crashing into a store. No fire had to be put out, so while the fire brigade wasn't required to get the dead man out of the vehicle, something within the cargo hold had been dislodged, cracked open. That which had been contained within being airborne, it spread rapidly to those in the immediate vicinity. It was an experimental super-plague, designed in a laboratory, incomplete but already capable of doing immense damage to whoever was exposed.
Strain #7287 was air- and waterborne, infecting the lungs and heart. It could spread within half an hour, symptons would appear within two hours. Within six, near-complete incapacitation occured, death coming slowly, two hours later. On average. It was highly resistant to 99% of all widely known antibiotics and other techniques to prevent infection and was capable of creating a 'capsule' - genetically modified - around itself once it was out of its ideal 'habitat' for a span of time, allowing it to potentially survive months, years, perhaps decades in dormancy, in the harshest of conditions, including a completely anaerobic environment, or one of immense heat.
It was the sort of strain that was made purely for experimental purposes, never intended to be released for any reason whatsoever. Once released, such strains were capable of depopulating vast stretches of land in record time, and keeping them like that for a practically indefinite amount of time.

10 hours after Patient Zero was infected, the Falklands were practically abandoned, military hardware brought by the still living units into the bases. Most of the civilian population was already dead or dying barely an hour later as several MOABs were delivered to deny future occupants Lunar military equipment. The ships with infected people were stranded on the Falklands' beaches, abandoned, as well.
Short of bleaching the entire island or heating the entirety up to hundreds and hundreds of degrees celsius to destroy the bacterium, it would be nearly impossible to settle on again.

While the Republic simply abandoned it and the nearly 20,000 who had died on it, biologists and genetech experts predicting that it would be centuries before the Falkland Islands would be habitable again.

"During the evacuation of the Falkland Islands, an accident of incredible proportion occured: An experimental bacterium, intended to be destroyed within the week and originally only made to see if it could be done, escaped from confinement.
As of now, almost 20,000 Lunar citizens are estimated to have died to the bacterium; we do not have the capability to restore the Falklands to their previous state and will be abandoning them entirely.
That is all."

Results. Results were always nice.
Rocketworth was currently busy elaborating the findings of the dedicated research team to the rest of the Ministerial heads. Those finding had, even for him, been a surprise.
"Not only were the supercapacitors not stripped of their electrons or ripped apart, they survived the entire thing relatively unscathed. The rails were singed on the inside, but are likely reusable. The cables between the two got shot, though, and several computers that apparently were too close were annihilated, as well.
"But the interesting thing is what happened with the slug. After months of analysis and pouring hundreds of thousands of man-hours into this, we came to a most interesting conclusion. Apparently, the sheer acceleration coupled with the powerful magnetic field and insane power somehow created a reaction in which the atoms at the very front, or 'tip' of the slug were turned into unknown particles and, amazingly, gravitons. The simple amount of them appeared to create a heavily localised alcubierre drive-like effect, something previously thought to be completely impossible. This is an incredible discovery with the potential to change how we see the universe. If we can replicate the effect, possibly in lower-energy conditions, we could, in theory, begin manipulating gravity itself! The implications of that are absolutely staggering, but let me show you just how much energy we might have to invest:
"That 20 kilogram slug we use is approximately 108.79 moles of tungsten. The TOASTR utilizes 3.6 Terajoule in firing. Going from here, we come to the conclusion that each single mole had been subjected to an average of 33.1 Gigajoule of energy. That's quite a lot, enough to power the average home for a long, long time. Applying that sort of power to about 184 gram of material without making something explode is rather hard. We'll have to see about researching methods to do this differently and perhaps more efficiently. But there's a lot of potential in this sort of technology, potential we need to try and exploit if we want to continue being the foremost power in space.
"Further research into this topic is highly recommended."

Damien was happy. So happy that he almost forgot he was standing within a rather sizable crowd, all people who had pledged their allegiance to his cause. The Solar cause.
He was Damien Pierné-Duparc, the man who was referred to as 'The Prince' by his followers. They had been gathering support for a long time now, years of hard, diligent work that would hopefully bring a new era. Of course, most of the civilian population would stay exactly that, civilian, unable to do much but watch as the factions duked it out. The threat from the 'Oppenheimer' vessels would be neutralised the moment the work of his allies began. There was only the question of when they would begin. It could happen at any time, whenever they wanted - MoM had been shut out of their plans, rather effectively, even. They could not prevent it.
A good number of the police force here in Xuesen and in several Lagrange habitats was on their side as well. His supporters had gathered enough forces that, with a surprise strike, complete decapitation. they merely needed to find the right moment to strike.
That moment would hopefully come very, very soon.

As per standard procedures, the trash created by Tianxia in the process of once again destroying satellites was being cleaned up by the Lunar Republic, their 'vacuuming' vessels springing into action to clean things up and prevent Earth Orbit from becoming a minefield for future generations. At the rate various nations had been destroying sats in the past, LEO would by now be a nearly imprenetrable 'shell' of speeding wrecks ranging from fingernail-sized to basketball-sized pieces and perhaps even larger, had the Republic not begun cleaning things up. Satellite launched would've been made next to impossible, the same with exploration of space.
Few on the planet knew the service the Republic was giving them for practically free. Not to mention that the surviving files and information in the wrecks always were a nice bonus.
