Recently, a series of storms has plagued the island, damaging the roads and rail-roads, wrecking our ports and damaging the towns and cities, and downing power-lines. So far, over 200,000 people are without electricity, and many thousands more having brown-outs. Most of our factories have been shut-down, as well as our shops and such, as nobody will be able to reach were they work, or shop. The damage from these storm is expected to be in the hundreds of millions, and such cost alone can damage our economy. Since no-one can get to or from Newfoundland, and because the storms have shut-down the economy, our dollar (witch is mainly used here.) has risen to about $16.75 NFD : 1 USD. Our president has said that he will ask congress to restrict the amount of gold and silver in supply, to make our dollar worth more, at least long enough anyway to easily help pay property damages.

Dominic, It appears that most of this nation is suffering a massive snow storm. It appears this may be the best we can do until the storms tire out.
The president, on advise from the minister of domestic affairs- Jessica Ross, has now called a 'Sate of Emergency' today, due to extreme weather. Any business, factory, or mine of any type, both state and private owned, if not already, is to be ordered to shut-down until the storms end. The Republic has hired about 200 street cleaners to clear the road-ways, and pour rock-salt to melt the ice. Speed limits are to be no greater than 10 mp/h in any area of this Republic, tho the people that live and are stranded here are advised to find shelter, in case something happens to were they live, or are at. It is expected that this may last only a few more days, maybe a week. As of lately, the economy is now considered temporary shut-down.

Today, with the storms finality passing, our current 'State of Emergency' is no longer as of now. As such; shops, factories, and mines and such are now open again to help start our economy again. Tho since it will be a wile until the streets will become clear of ice, or clear enough any-way, our drivers were told to still drive with caution. Construction on the platforms will begin next-week as the sea is clear enough to move what we need to the platforms. In other news, the damage from the storms are roughly estimated at 400 million NFD. The Republic will send in construction crews and such to help rebuild the damaged buildings (mostly by the coast tho), to fix the roads, power lines, and other such property damage. In other news, the NFD is now worth about 10 NFD: 1 USD. Our current tight control of our gold and silver is probably one reason for this. This of course will make it at-least sorta easier for the government to pay for what it needs during this time.

We shall thank your help in our efforts to rebuild. Our capital, being near the coast, would appreciate some help with your construction teams. Feel free to send some of them to damaged settlements to if you want. As for the money, we think you for this. We'll be sure to use it wisely.

Today, we found amid ruined structures some bodies, as we expected from the storm. Since we weren't able to get to them earlier due to poor road conditions, is was at first hard to find out how many died, or are missing. So far, about 75 people have been found dead, and 75 missing. The Republic is saddened that this happened, but states that we can't help what nature does to us. Our capitol city, St. John, has also been badly damaged by the storm, as many others. Reconstruction efforts meanwhile are going great, and our economy is improving as well. And lastly, most airports and sea ports are now open, and those who were stranded here are free to go. The construction for the Hibernia oil plat-forms will resume as usual.

As the days and weeks passed, Newfoundland has been rebuilding from it's recent storms. A finial count has been done on lives coast, being about 343 dead, 100 missing, and several injured. And most of our villages, towns, and cities are mostly fixes. Thanks to the help of Greenland, and help from our own government, we were able to fix our nation with minimal problems. The NFD has gotten slightly stronger, and our economy is booming again as our factories work around the clock to build the Hibernia oil plat-forms. In other news, due to our reconstruction efforts and previous loans to the FoundTrans-Atlantic oil company, the Republic has accrued a debt of about 10 billion NFD. Good thing our dollar is strong enough to pay that off in a few months, if we don't spend more of our tax dollars on too many other things.

-----------------
economy-ish
-------
As for FoundTrans-Atlantic oil, they were only able to pay a small 70,000,000 a week until they were able to make enough to pay back in larger sums. Since this was a little more than a year ago from that 20 billion NFD loan, they have paid back only (excluding interest so far.) 3.92 Billion NFD. We may have to use what we can of this money to pay off our debt. Our congress is also debating a bill to temporarily restrict the gold and silver in the country, to raise the value of our dollar to were we could easily pay off our debts.

The senate came to a conclusion today, with a new bill that will restrict the gold that the Republic produces from its mines. The republic will also take a small 2.38 metric tons of gold out of the system, by having banks loan gold to the government. The bill passed with 189 votes. The result of this was a skyrocketing in the value of the NFD as gold and silver became worth more because of this move. (2.50 NFD now equals 1 USD.) As the worth of the NFD increases because of this bill, it will become easier to pay our debts. This bill will also make things cheaper in the republic. As the value of these precious medals increase in the stock market, more and more people are starting to invest more in them, in the hopes of getting rich. As more people invest in gold, silver, and the NFD, the easier it will be for us to pay our debts. And the better our economy will be in the future.

Dominic was looking out his window, as began to wonder how he could more easily defend his country. Even tho Newfoundland hasn't been invaded in a while, or many years anyway, it still could happen. Tho not much, we should be able to have minimal defense for when it's needed. At this, he started for the senate room, for they happened to hold a meeting today. When he entered, they greeted him, and asked what brought him here.

"Fellow people. Reps of our Republic. It has occurred to me that in this world, even what we do have to defend ourselves isn't enough. I feel that we need to invest in the technology and materials for a semi-modern ship. I feel a few destroyers will fit that. I think that we can move forward, if we can vote for the funding of a corporation for the teck needed, and the funds needed for a necessarily defense.

Today, congress is debating a bill that may increase our funding to technology, and military. The supposed purpose for this is so we have "the minimal defense necessary for the safety our republic." If this bill will pass, it will be likely that a new navy and ship-building contractor will come about. As well as better and more efficient technology for our daily lives, and weapons. It seems likely that this will pass, despite the Socialist Party's wishes to lower the military budget. Seems like they are willing to do this in the name of a proper defense.
Today, the senate has voted in a bill, with 197 votes, that will build a navy, and in the same way, increase our technological advancements. Thanks in part to a generous donation of S50 million from the Federation of Arctic nations. The donation, and about 875 million NFD, is going to various universities in the republic to help fund their various technological projects. A additional 75 million has been allowed to help the St. John Shipyard to expand just enough to build the navy. The main purpose for the universities' projects ( That is, if they wanted to get a nice check) would be the development of various defense and offence weapons and tools for our ships, and or ground army, and the like and such. As the president was else were doing something, some of the members of the senate were asked by the Minister of defence, Ryan Aquila, to put a vote on a new budget for the military to expand our defence and offence capabilities. Part of this would be more money for the making of weapons contractors, and to create better weapons. Some of it will also be used for the purpose of building a pentagon to coordinate the military when needed, and act as its headquarters. As well as a few more bases and forts and etc. And of course, with the need for aircraft for military purposes, airbases and a contractor for such military and civilian craft as well. Since this isn't actually increasing the military budget that much, but more a changing a little bit of what goes were thing, this is likely to go through the senate.

Today, as passed with 178 vote, the military budget act of '20XX' will rearrange the republic's military budget, and a 3% increase in it. Previously, the money was used for small weapons programs, a couple other projects, and paying the solders. With the passing of this new budget tho, new and larger contractors will be set up to help protect this nation. As well as the attempt to provide a better defence. In related news, the senate has allowed the building of 3 destroyers to help patrol our waters. They will be made with the best technology we may have here, at the coast of aprox. 9.35 billion NFD at the St. John Shipyards. Tho due to our own technological imitations, this ship may take a little more than 5 or so years. The technology needed for the weapons systems we have in mind are hopefully to be due by then.

As Newfound-Atlantic oil is now in need for more funds as the cost for some materials is going up, the senate has agreed to loan out another 20 billion NFD. Tho this loan will be more long-term than the last (As we have more money to lend now) the loan will be for 20 years, at 3% interest. Witch amounts to about 2.5 million a month.

Today, it was announced by Fortis Inc. that they now have several solar plants in the nation, and that the green energy now represents roughly a tenth of what the nation uses. Not much, but we feel it's a start. The rest being mostly oil, and natural gas. 'Sunny-Skies' and 'Burning Sun-Energy' have also stated that they will be trying their best to make their panels as efficient as possible to suit the nation's needs. In time, it's expected that solar energy may make up most of our energy, and will become much more efficient.

As the the military budget act of '20XX' was passed some time ago, a new military contractor has been set up, paid for by the organization of this bill. The new State-owned company is the 'Newfoundland Defence contractors'. The companies purpose is to create weapons and models to be of use to the republic. A pentagon has also been recently built that will be outfitted as a hq for our military, and watched over by our Minister of defense- Ryan Aquila. Both of these structures will be located in our capitol, St. John.

Plans for creating some air-craft are already under-way as-well, and a few air-bases are expected to pop-up soon.

Newfoundland has been placed on DEFCON 3 due to the possibility of having to help defend Canada's island territories, Sao Tome and Pricipe. For a few hours at a time, nearly 10,000 personal would take turns at FT. Summer with their training. Or about a thousand at a time for a few hours. They would be doing simple shooting and evading exercises and such so they'd have some chance against a potential enemy. Of-course, they'd also be getting their needed training that some of them may need. It has been decided that such drills will continue regardless of if we go to war to defend them or not. So the drills will last for a couple months.
