AUP Surprise Announcement stuns Federation

Despite his popularity amongst the population in the Federation, many political leaders believe that Henri Broussard has become a liability.

Baton Rouge, LA - Since taking the throne almost two years ago, Henri Broussard has led the New Acadian resurgence with vigor and a strong hand, influencing policy and ensuring that the Cajun Federation has quickly become a regional power. Despite the high regard many citizens of the Cajun Federation hold him in, however, the usually monarchy-backing Acadian Union Party last night, in an unprecedented statement, requested a dissolution of the monarchy. The request for the dissolution comes after recent and ongoing civil strife erupted in Alexandria between the extremist protestant sect, the Louisiana Christian Guard, and municipal and national authorities. The bloodshed continues unabated at this moment, and the government has reportedly dispatched regular forces to deal with what could be the beginnings of a full-scale civil war.

Broussard, who has stayed out of the limelight throughout the crisis, having stayed at his family plantation between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, spoke in response to the violence, saying, "There is no need for this brutality, whether it be influenced by our beliefs or political ideologies." It is reported that the Louisiana Christian Guard has also seen recruits from leftist political leanings join its ranks, many of whom disapprove of the monarchy and would prefer to see a more republican-based system.

During their announcement, the Acadian Union Party stressed that the country needed to be unified at this moment, and that much of the agenda of the Louisiana Christian Guard has to do with the monarchy and how it has control of many facets of the Federation. The Acadian Union Party said that while it agenda warrants merit, it does not allow for any group to initiate civil strife in order to gain a political edge. The Acadian Union Party still felt that Henri Broussard "has an integral part" in Cajun Federation politics, and should definitely be involved some way with the government, but felt that a Congressional Committee should oversee the management of the nation until the civil strife in Alexandria was settled. The AUP noted that it was amenable to negotiating with Broussard, and that its statement was not meant in any way to offend the monarch, who does have control of the armed forces, which some junior members of the AUP feel could be used as a bargaining chip against the Cajun National Congress.

The Cajun Liberal Movement, who has been repeatedly urging its members to take part in only non-violent demonstrations against the monarchy, like the Cajun Christian Democratic Party, supported the AUP's call for a dissolution of the monarchy. Some members said that such a dissolution might be possibly temporary, until a new constitution might be agreed upon. The Cajun Liberal Movement voiced some concern over the status of Broussard having command over the military, but praised his efforts thus far to bring the Cajun Federation "as far as it has come since independence." However, the political tension only seems to deepen with Broussard and his staff remaining quiet on the request by the AUP and other political parties.

If Broussard were to abdicate to avoid a dissolution of the monarchy, Crown Princess Michelle Broussard-Doiron, pictured here at Fort Beausoleil, could be his possible successor.

Meanwhile, the heir to the Cajun throne, Crown Princess Michelle Broussard-Doiron, is reportedly in charge of a military task force that has been assigned to restore order to Alexandria. The Crown Princess, who only recently took command of the newly-formed Royal Lifeguards Regiment, distinguished herself as part of the initial wave to jump into Cuba during Operation Ortsac II. Her younger brother, Marcel is also reportedly a member of the Cajun Armed Forces and is an officer in the military's shadowy Group 62. She and her staff were understandably unavailable for comment on the sudden request by the AUP.

The Crown Princess Michelle Broussard-Doiron.

As one Acadian Union Party Congressman said, "While the King has done much for this nation, I believe that we are at a political crossroads. It is time to make a decision, and that decision should lie with the Cajun people, we need to put the government into their hands now. The monarchy stands in the way of such a republican idea, it either needs to be dissolved, or reformed in such a way that allows for modern democratic processes to take place."
OOC: I really like how you RP, I actually read your news thread. If you were just Louisiana and would call yourself the Cajun Federation it would have been cool if you would have made Lafeyyette the capital. Anyway, keep up the good work!

"There are times when a leader discovers those who he or she has led towards a path to greatness, success, or otherwise, have slowly evolved into leaders themselves. A leader must not only provide guidance to those who he or she has led, he must also give them the tools and traits necessary to allow for them to mature into leaders themselves. Some leaders are slowly replaced by the passing of time, when age or ability or both has slowly worn their talents down. Experience may forever remain, but the energy to continue slowly decreases every passing day, until they finally relinquish their grip over their followers-turned-leaders.

Other leaders are ejected violently or swiftly, when their followers find the will or means to coup them from their position. They find that their abilities to at least overthrow their master are easy to come by, and they strike swiftly to capitalize on such abilities. Some come to greatness through such a process, overthrowing a tyrannical strongman and giving freedom to other followers, some find that their abilities to lead are not as satisfactory as those they replace, which finds the latter usually replaced rather quickly. The old leader is disposed of, or exiled, or forcefully retired into seclusion, the people who he or she led try to forget them as soon as possible.

Then there are those leaders who realize that it is time to pass the scepter of power to those who have earned it, who have followed them through the depths of despair, or marched with them to success or glory. It is those leaders that realize that their time has come, those who have committed their lives to the betterment of their followers, and seen them mature under their supervision, that allow for success to continue unabated. When the followers come to those that lead, asking for the right to lead, after marching with that leader for so long, and to ask for the power to lead with the respect and dignity owed, it is those followers who have earned the right to lead.

I would be a hypocrite to deny those that have worked with me for almost two years in bringing this country to its feet, their turn to lead this great nation that we have built as brothers and sisters. I have preached the importance of democracy, and now that voice of republicanism has flowered and matured, and asked for the right to lead this nation into the future. There is no place in this government for a hypocrite, those who preach one path, but follow another trail to retain their mastery. The Federation has outgrown royalty, it has outgrown the need for the position of a monarch such as myself, therefore it is time for change.

I, Henri Broussard, King of Cajun Federation, Lord Protector of Cuba, and Grand Marshal of the Cajun Armed Forces, hereby order the DISSOLUTION of the monarchy as the observed form of government in the Cajun Federation, effective immediately. I relinquish control of the Cajun Armed Forces to the Cajun National Congress, hereby placing all military forces in the hands of the people, and hereby order a Temporary Congressional Ruling Committee to be formed to rule in my stead. I hereby respectfully request that all titles that have been earned by my family to be retained, but relinquish any claims to ruling this great nation. I also respectfully request that I am involved in the formation process of the new government as an adviser, I will not, however, seek public office or a position of power in any new Federation government formed.

I perform this action in good faith of putting this nation in the hands of its democratically elected officials, and for the desire of this nation to continue its great strides forward as it carves out its own place in history. It is time for this nation to move on, for new leaders to emerge and show their worth, and lead this great nation forward. It is your time, my fellow citizens, to transition from one leader to another, it was an honor to serve you as your leader during these times of trials and tribulations. I only ask those who violently oppose the now deposed monarchy to let the rule of law return to this land, and stop further bloodshed, for the good of this nation and your fellow citizens."

With Sincere Regards,

"With the dissolution of the monarchy, it is the decision of the Interim Governing Council to reform the National Government in the form of a Republican Commonwealth of States. The Cajun National Congress will be reformed into a bicameral legislative branch, which is overseen by the Council of Ministers, who oversee the various ministries of the nation. The legislative branch will be made up of the Cajun National Senate, and the Cajun National Legislature, both of which will oversee their own duties to the nation and its citizens. Every thirty-six months, the Cajun National Congress will oversee the election (or re-election of the Lord or Lady Protector of the Federation, who will serve as the Head of State and represent an Executive Branch.

The Lord or Lady Protector of the Federation is the nominal head of the armed forces, but the armed forces will be sworn to protect and uphold the new constitution, which is being redrafted by the Interim Governing Council. From this position, the Lord or Lady Protector of the Federation will appoint their own representative to oversee proceedings of the Cajun National Congress, who will be chosen from the majority ruling party, and given the position of Prime Minister. The appointment of Prime Minister can be struck down by the Cajun National Congress, and a re-appointment can be asked for. The Prime Minister is the nominal Head of Government, and oversees the day-to-day processes of the government, and is the head of the Council of Ministers. The Lord or Lady Protector can represent the Cajun Federation abroad, signing treaties in the name of the Federation, but these treaties must be ratified by the Cajun National Congress by a simple majority and also have the general approval of the Council Ministers. The Lord or Lady Protector is also in charge of appointing judges to the Federal Courts, whose appointments must be ratified by the Cajun National Senate.

The Lord or Lady Protector can also order Cajun Federation troops into battle for as many as sixty days, without the approval of the Cajun National Congress, but with the general approval of the Council of Ministers. After sixty days, the Cajun National Congress must give a vote of confidence to extend any combat operations, all of this will be explained under the Executive Emergency War Powers Clause in the redrafted constitution. The Lord or Lady Protector can order Cajun Armed Forces into a peacekeeping and human relief operations that does involve low-intensity conflict, but after ninety days, is subject to a vote of confidence by the Cajun National Congress, under the same Emergency War Powers Clause. This gives the Lord or Lady Protector a degree of flexibility in our modern world, where emergency deployments must occur within as little as twenty-four hours.

Through negotiation of the new government, with the assistance of our esteemed former monarch, Henri Broussard, the Interim Governing Council has decided to appoint a Protector of the Cajun Federation ahead of the formation of the new government. This is to assure that the Federation's Head of State is able to represent the government before national elections. During elections, the population will be asked to give a vote of confidence in the appointed protector, as well as the general approval for admission of Cuba as the fourth state of the Cajun Federation. We wholeheartedly look forward to the formation of a truly republican government, and the upcoming national elections, which will be held after counterinsurgency campaign in Central Louisiana is completed (OOC: This thread, the thread has its own timeline, but the outcome is predetermined, this announcement is assumed to be coming at the tail end of the events in the "Crusaders" thread).

It is the decision of the Interim Governing Council, after consultation with the Interim Ministers Committee, and other advisers to the Council, to appoint MICHELLE BROUSSARD-DOIRON, the former Crown Princess, to the position of Lady Protector of the Cajun Federation. Her service to the Federation in this time of crisis and her sustained efforts to end the conflict in Alexandria through the most peaceful means available, has not gone unnoticed. Upon completion of her service in Alexandria, she will be recalled to Baton Rouge to take the Oath of Office from the head of the Interim Governing Council with her Uncle, Henri Broussard, in attendance.

Michelle Broussard-Doiron, Appointed Lady Protector of the Cajun Federation

On another note, it is the decision of the Interim Governing Council to hereby SUSPEND all existing DEFENSIVE TREATIES AND PACTS, not including trade agreements, pending re-evaluation. With the reformation of the national government, we feel that this is of importance. The Interim Governing Council is reviewing its foreign policy outlook on regional and global commitments, and adjustments are expected to be made in due time. We urge calm to our existing allies while these adjustments are made, and hope they understand these changes.

To the citizens, those who we represent, we send our regards and ask you to embrace these new changes. These have been trying times for our country, but we all stand united together as one nation, where all are equal, and represented to the fullest extent. We thank you for your confidence in our government during these times of reform, and laud your efforts to maintain that unity when extremism threatened to tear our country asunder.

With the sincerest of regards,

The Interim Governing Council of the Cajun Federation

From: Anke Vogel, Director of Foreign Affairs of the Austrian Revolutionary Council
Subject: Treaty

Excellency,

During the reign of your relative, King Henri, the former Austrian Empire had reached a mutual defensive pact with the Federation. This pact helped alleviate Austrian worries about a North America that seems relatively hostile to our presence. Having smoothed over relations with the Noverians, the Republic now asks what is the future of our relations with the Federation. If you would like to negotiate our alliance, I would invite you, yourself to Vienna in order to do so, however if this is to early or fast for a renewed friendship, I understand and Austria will be happy to part with the Federation for a time. My hopes, however, are that the Federation and the Republic can once enjoy togetherness on a continent that is finally accepting of Austrian Governance of the northern regions.

Sincerely,

Anke Vogel

Subject: RE: Treaty

Greetings Ms. Vogel,

I apologize for the absence of the Lady Protector's hand in writing this, but she is currently indisposed dealing with an insurrection in Central Louisiana. Once she has completed her campaign, she will be available for comment on these matters. The Interim Governing Council, can, however, say that the state of foreign policy for the Cajun Federation is in limbo, we are readjusting our outlook on both global and regional affairs. While we recognize the fact that Austria's claim to the regions of the Pacific Northwest, we feel that further imperialism, including any expansion of existing colonies, is not desirable.

We do not consider out treaty to be cancelled, but for the moment, suspended. The Cajun Federation, before it renews this treaty, feels it must review its foreign policy to regional commitments. We will gladly continue discussions or I can present myself in person in Austria if you would like, but for the moment, as I stated before, our foreign policy is currently being reassessed.

Sincerely,

Maxime Lafayette
The government, with the approval of the populous, hereby pledges whatever subsidies needed to establish a high-speed, trans-ocean ferry service that will run between our newest brother state and the continental states. Also included in this transit package is further funding to improve Cuba's infrastructure including roads, rail, ports, and other transportation means to assist with the smooth development of the newest state of the Federation.

On an unrelated note, the Cajun Federation will be soon completing its final review of diplomatic agreements and will announce any changes or indefinite suspensions soon.

"The Cajun Federation is proud to announce results for the first general election as a republican commonwealth, a move which took place after Henri Broussard abdicated from the monarchy and dissolved it. Whilst still recovering from internal strife, it was the decision of the Interim Governing Council that elections must take place as soon as possible following Broussard's exit. It is expected that Congress will ratify the newest constitution of the Cajun Federation at its upcoming meeting, which we have now confirmed will be a coalition government. There have been no majority holders in Congress for parties, therefore the government will have to be approved by the Lady Protector, the newly anointed Michelle Broussard-Doiron, which there is little doubt that she will reject the coalition.

The following is the results of the election with ninety-nine percent of all precincts reporting, from Fayetteville, Arkansas to Guantanamo, Cuba;

Acadian Union Party (44%)

Cajun Liberal Movement (32%)

Cajun Socialist Front (13%)

Cajun Christian Democratic Party (11%)
The above BOLD results, are the actual coalition members, the AUP lost its majority in government, while the CLM gained some majority in Congress, the Cajun Socialist Front is a newcomer to Federation politics, this being its first general election. The socialists were able to nudge aside the CCDP, who lost ground due to their affiliation with the Louisiana Christian Guard and the events in Alexandria. The CSF has pledged that more social welfare programs are needed, which garnered a number of votes from lower class families in Mississippi, especially in Central Mississippi.

On election day, Michelle Broussard-Doiron was anointed LADY PROTECTOR OF THE CAJUN FEDERATION, an appointment which was privately endorsed by Henri Broussard and many high-ranking members of the Interim Governing Council. Broussard-Doiron was appointed in a quiet ceremony surrounded by members of the Interim Governing Council, some high-ranking military authorities, and other dignitaries. Her appointment was approved by a wide margin of the Cajun Federation in a plebiscite that was included in the General Election, with eighty-two percent of the voting population approving her appointment.

In other developments, after reviewing its' foreign treaties and agreements, have decided to retain its defensive pact with the Republic of Austria for the time being. The Cajun Federation hereby cancels any other pacts that it holds with any other nations, we will gladly renegotiate any pacts or welcome any new nations to engage in diplomacy with our nation. In a statement of affirmation, the Cajun Federation is hereby committing itself to promoting North American community and repairing its continental relations."
First Cajun Congress meets amid Military Campaign Kickoff

Soldiers from the 16th Airborne Brigade perform a combined-arms air assault in the lands outside St. Louis.

Baton Rouge, LA - As the Cajun National Congress opened its first session since the Federation became a republican commonwealth, units from Cajun Armed Forces and Federation National Police crossed the border into the former lands of the Federation of Columbia. The Cajun National Congress swiftly passed a unanimous bill today approving of the actions taken by the Council of Ministers and the Lady Protector in dispatching troops into the failed state. A spokesman with the Cajun Interior Ministry noted that the Cajun Federation had "credible evidence" that heavy weapons used during the Alexandria Uprising were smuggled across from the lawless state at least a month before the rebellion took place. Weapons including rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machineguns surprised Cajun Armed Forces and municipal authorities, who were initially outgunned in the conflict until military forces took over the pacification campaign.

Reports of a raid by Cajun Special Forces on a warehouse across the border in Joplin confirmed a large amount of heavy handheld weaponry, including anti-tank rockets, machineguns, as well as shoulder launchers for surface-to-air missiles. The Cajun National Congress lauded the efforts of the Cajun Armed Forces in bringing order to the failed Federation of Columbia, and ratified the Lady Protector's declaration of protection over the lands of the Federation of Columbia. The Cajun National Congress also held closed door meetings of many of its offshoot committees, including Defense Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Internal Affairs, and Economic Affairs. The closed-door sessions were to bring junior members of these committees, which are led by the respective Ministers to which they are associated with, up to speed on the current state of affairs.

The Congress is also expected to decide on Michelle Broussard-Doiron's selections for Prime Minister within the coming week, which might be a contentious hot topic in this coalition government. Continued funding for the Cajun Federation's Naval Procurement Program has also been cited as a possible target for spending cuts by the Cajun Liberal Movement, who have spoken out against the Federation's large military buildup over the short expanse of its lifetime. The Acadian Union Party, despite losses in the general election to its majority, fought back by saying the rebuilding of the nation's military gave an early boost to the economy, and continued contracts would help provide extra gains to national manufacturers. The Cajun Socialist Front says it plans to vote with the Acadian Union Party, advocating continued spending for Naval Procurement, many of which see this move to please a number of the CSF's union backers. The CSF has a strong backing in Southern Mississippi, where a large amount of the Federation's indigenous shipbuilding is located, and political analysts say that continued contracts will ensure strong backing to those who support it in the Congress.

The first session of the Cajun National Congress begins.

Meanwhile, the Cajun Armed Forces continues its military campaign to pacify the now lawless lands of the former Federation of Columbia, and it has noted that gun battles have erupted between what the military is describing as bands of organized criminals and bandits. The military has reported six wounded since the beginning of the campaign, and another soldier dead from a non-combat related accident, when a paratrooper with the 16th Airborne Brigade made an early morning jump on the Lambert International Airport in St. Louis. The soldier's parachute failed to open and the solider fell to his death, military investigators are saying that it is the result of a tragic oversight of some staff who improperly packed the parachute.

The move by the Cajun Federation to ensure law is restored to Missouri has garnered North American support, earning praise from both the Republic of Noveria, as well as the Dixie Confederacy. The signing of the ratification of the Lady Protector's declaration of protection indefinitely extends the mission of the Cajun Armed Forces, who still have a significant amount of ground to cover after jumping off two days ago. The military has said it is taking all precautions necessary to avoid civilian casualties, and so far, none have been reported. Military leaders have said that the units are expected to reach their final objectives within the next forty-eight to seventy-two hours, but have said they are moving at a steady pace to ensure that they secure the ground they cover.

Sources within the interior ministry have reported that the shadowy Special Forces unit Group 62 have been working in conjunction with Federation National Police's Counter-Intelligence and Major Crime Units to take the fight to criminal organizations that may have contributed to the violence in Alexandria, Louisiana. Joint Special Operations Command remained without comment on these source reports, saying that ongoing military operations involving their units were always classified to protect their soldiers and operational security.

AUP's Glenburn named Prime Minister

Glenburn, seen here during his time in the armed forces during the Cuban Emergency, has been a fast rising star in Acadian Union Party for the past year.

Baton Rouge, LA - As the new government of the now Republican Commonwealth of the Cajun Federation forms, it seems to take on more and more of a younger appearance. Today marks the swearing in of the new Prime Minister, Terrence Glenburn, who has been a rising star in the Acadian Union Party since his involvement in politics after a brief two years of service in the Cajun Armed Forces. Glenburn was a political activist throughout his college days before joining the armed forces out of nationalist fervor after the rise of Henri Broussard and the declaring of the Federation as independent of the Empire of Pravus Ingruo.

The Lady Protector, Michelle Broussard-Doiron, had the power to nominate the Prime Minister, who now heads the Council of Ministers and is considered the Head of Government, while Broussard-Doiron is the Head of State. Glenburn was overwhelmingly approved by both house of the Cajun National Congress, as well as the Council of Ministers, many of whom liked his warm bipartisan attitude mixed with a "healthy and energetic" approach to day-to-day governing of the country. The Lady Protector has been quoted as saying that she felt that Glenburn was a natural choice of the job, unstained by a long term in government, and a fresh, energetic personality to go along with the new central government.

Glenburn has stated that while he supported the monarchy, and was an acquaintance and guest of Henri Broussard after a successful tour of duty as a junior officer in the Cuban Expeditionary Force at a celebration gala, he also felt that the change in government was needed. Glenburn successfully led his unit on a four day trek to Havana after landing in Central Cuba, his initiative and drive to care for his soldiers during this arduous march earned him a promotion before his honorable discharge. He has been a strong proponent of constitutional reform, and was said to have been one of the few people that visited Henri Broussard before he abdicated the throne.

Glenburn during the transitional government period, at a press conference as the newly-appointed President of the powerful center-right Acadian Union Party.

Glenburn also played a key role in the decision for the Federation to begin a large pacification campaign into the fallen Federation of Columbia, and was involved in helping build the case for the intervention. His politics have put him at odds with some in the Foreign Ministry, where his North-American-centric attitude, which mirrors the Lady Protector's has made for a headache internationally. Glenburn, as the AUP President, served as a key adviser to the Lady Protector, and is said to have also been a deciding role in the decision to suspend treaties with many close allies. Only Austria was maintained as an ally after a substantial "reviewing" period.

Whatever his faults, however, Glenburn has rode into the position of Head of Government on an optimistic wave of both public and political sentiment. Every political party gave the new Prime Minister a majority vote in both houses of Congress. Many individuals on the streets have dubbed Broussard-Doiron and Glenburn as the "young guns", not just for their former military backgrounds, but also to signify their newcomer presence in government.
CFNS Mercy, one of the Navy's hospital ships anchored off Guantanamo Bay, a day before her departure.

Havana, CUBA - While the Stevedore's Union of Cuba has been lobbying the Havana Port Authority for better pay and benefits, no workers were seen on the picket lines for the past seventy-two hours. The picket lines were not broken by the Federation National Police, but by the government requesting the assistance of all dockworkers to help load a slew of ships that arrived in Havana four nights ago. When asked to comment on their sudden abandonment of the picket lines, the stevedores said it was in the best interest of the Irish people, and that with the nature of the conflict in Ireland, that the cargo needed to be dispatched as soon as it could have been.

"I can carry a sign in a couple days, these people need our help now," said one foreman, overseeing the loading of various containers filled with humanitarian aid onto a huge container ship.

The stevedores who arrived for the first shift yesterday, before the convoy departed late in the day, were surprised by a visitor from the mainland. Michelle Broussard-Doiron, known for spearheading more support for charities since taking office, put her work ethic where her mouth was and worked the entire first shift with the dockworkers. The Lady Protector assisted the loading of heavy equipment onto a roll-on, roll-off ship, driving a few trucks onto the ship, helping secure vehicles on the decks, as well as taking manifest of vehicles and equipment being loaded onto the ship.

"I could actually read half the manifest when I got it at noon," laughed the ship's Captain, complimenting the Lady Protector's penmanship upon reading the list. "Usually these lists are about as much rough as the stevedores' salty accents!"

"She's not afraid to get her hands dirty, that's for damn sure, she started her morning having coffee with us, before going out onto the docks with some of her staffers. She can join our loading crew any day!" said Juan Salza, a stevedore who worked with the Lady Protector on loading the RO-RO.

"While two of the claims to Ireland have been successfully negotiated peacefully, there are multiple existing claims that might see the citizens of Ireland embroiled in a civil war. If we can get supplies there before such conflict occurs, if it does, the populace stands a better chance of being able to stock up on rations and medical supplies before logistical hubs and transportation networks are effected. The Cajun Federation stands by their neighbors across the pond, and I will do everything I can to ensure that their needs are seen to," said Broussard-Doiron, in a press conference after her shift on the docks.

The Cajun National Congress has authorized the mobilization of the Cajun Navy's Auxiliary Fleet's assets to assist the humanitarian relief effort, spearheaded by the Federation Office of Emergency Relief or "FOER". The FOER has been working closely with the Cajun National Congress and the Council of Ministers, and was provided with an emergency funding to hire a number of civilian cargo vessels. Along with the Auxiliary Fleet, the humanitarian relief convoy is expected to be afforded logistical and command support from the aircraft carrier CFS Doiron and its attendant battlegroup, which has just finished bi-monthly readiness exercises in the North Atlantic.

Also to be sailing with the aid convoy is one of the newest ships in the fleet, the CFNS Mercy, which recently finished its maiden voyage to its homeport at Guantanamo Bay. Attending to the Mercy, providing it with extra Medevac Helicopters, extra supplies, and fuel, is the Joint Support Ship Mississippi, which will sail beside the Mercy during the journey. The vessels have been ordered to maintain a minimum safe distance and respect the recently enforced blockade of Ireland from non-European powers by the Athenian Federation.

"We know what it is like to go into anarchy, to see our government fall into shambles, until the people of the Delta came to us and gave us prosperity and security, it is time for someone else to feel hope and feel cared about," said a stevedore foreman.

Cajun Armed Forces wind down support of Border Patrol

Civilian Border Patrol agents are a much more familiar sight along the borders of the Federation nowadays.

Fort Smith, AR - For the past year and a half or so, a familiar sight along the borders of the Cajun Federation was the sea of camouflage uniforms, members of the National Guard and Army, as they performed various tasks of border security. The Cajun Armed Forces High Command has confirmed, however, that the recent downturn in the presence of the military along the border is something that will be normal. The Federation's Border Patrol, after a strong recruiting drive over the past year, has garnered positive results, a large number of former military members joining up to serve for the border patrol.

The Interior Ministry has repeatedly thanked the Cajun Armed Forces for their assistance over the past year and a half, but has also cited the need for the Ministry and the Border Patrol, which is under its' supervision, to be able to secure the borders on their own. The High Command of the Cajun Armed Forces has agreed with this viewpoint, saying that manpower, vehicles, and resources were being fettered away in this mission. Although they were willing participants and enthusiastically assisted the Border Patrol with their duties; the recent standpoint taken by the military is that the Interior Ministry is reaching a point where it can protect the borders on its own. This has led to the drawing-down of military patrols which have been frequent for the past many months.

"They were good lads and lasses to have around," noted one resident of Lake Charles, Louisiana, commenting on the Army troops that were rotated through the months into the Lake Charles/Southern Louisiana Border Region. "But its good that the civvies are taking over, they should not have had to have troops doing the job of the border patrol."

Most military units that are still stationed along the border have been positioned in built up areas, or ones where cross-border crime rates are significantly higher than normal.

"While the military has a duty to national defense, it should definitely be the civilian authorities who are our first line of defense and the first face an international traveler sees when they come across the border," said Lady Protecter Michelle Broussard-Doiron, commenting on the withdrawal of military forces from border patrol. "We are no police state, yet I still think some countries abroad might think otherwise. It is one image that I seem to battle with that was built up under my uncles' rule, and one that I am hoping to dispose of."

A national poll at the Cajun Chronicle's homepage cited that out of a poll taken from a sample of more than one hundred thousand citizens, that seventy-nine percent of respondents believed that it was time to move on from militarized borders. The Cajun Armed Forces issued a new report on its own homepage today, that gave a straightforward and accurate picture of the withdrawal of military forces from border patrol duties. It is expected that within the next three months that no military forces will be on day-to-day patrols, and within a year and a half, the Border Patrol will have the internal capability to operate the sophisticated detection and sensor equipment that is now being employed along the border.

Color Lines plans Cuban Ferry Service

A view of the bayou near Venice, Louisiana, at sunset, a large passenger ferry service has been planned to run between Venice and Havana, Cuba, possibly as early as next year.

Venice, LA - The bustling port of Venice, Louisiana, has seen more federal government vehicle plates this week then it has since the Federation declared its independence, many of them from the Transportation Ministry. Venice has seen its ups and downs in the past decade, its economy based in seafood harvesting, as well as providing supplies for offshore oil platforms. The federal government and Color Lines Ferry Services may be changing the now-waning economy of Venice within the next year, as surveyors and evaluation teams from the Transportation Ministry decide whether running across the Gulf of Mexico to Havana or another Cuban port is a feasible option.

Color Lines Ferry Services has reported that it is interested in running a government-subsidized ferry service between Cuba and Louisiana, citing experience in running freight and tanker services between the mainland and Cuba since the Federation took over administration of Cuba. Sources within the Transportation Ministry have said that they have given a nod to Color Lines that they would be willing to subsidize this ferry services' operating costs, so long as the corporation paid for the construction of the ships that would act as ferries. Sources have also revealed that there are possible designs in the works for the service, and many say that the voyage would probably be an overnight service.

"While air service between Cuba and the mainland is certainly reliable and economical for business people, it does not provide a feasible mode of transportation to move cars over to Cuba from the mainland for traveling families or truck drivers," notes Dillon University Professor of Civil Engineering Dale Villieux.

A color rendition of a possible contender for a ferry liner that would run between Louisiana and Cuba.

While nothing appears to be set entirely in stone, it appears that the Transportation Ministry is looking seriously at putting in some sort of ferry service, which could be a cheaper alternative for families that are vacationing in Cuba, or trucking companies. While container transport is certainly more cost-effective, some trucking companies do not need to use these services on a large scale basis. Installing regular ferry service would help alleviate these headaches and allow for regular, government-subsidized sea transport between the mainland and Cuba. The expansion of such services could come into being under a new bill that is coming to a vote in the Cajun National Congress, known as the "Cuban Infrastructure Improvement Act", which could see billions of ANF pumped into infrastructure planning and construction on Cuba itself.

"In the interests of increasing cooperation and reducing any lingering tensions following the Cajun Federation's annexation of Cuba, the Cajun Federation is hereby revising a previous order that extended an archipelagic waterway to Cuba from mainland Louisiana-Mississippi. The Cajun Federation hereby allows foreign military forces the rite of free passage through these waters without incident, so long as they do not interfere with Cajun economic traffic. The Federation asks that any military forces in this area please refrain from test firing weapons within five nautical miles of any ships transiting this waterway, so that passengers and crews of vessels are not disturbed or alarmed.

The Cajun Federation will continue to maintain that it has the right to enforce fishery and natural resource legislation in this corridor, but this is only to ensure the safety of transiting vessels, to keep maritime collisions at a minimum. We ask that any foreign corporations that plan to fish or extract natural resources in these waters contact the Interior or Foreign Ministries of the Cajun Federation before exploiting these waters. We consider these waters to be a vital lifeline to Cuba from the mainland, and want to ensure the safety of all mariners and their passengers."

Vermilion Bay has been very busy for the past two years, and the facility is ready for an upgrade, scientists and launch personnel say.

Vermilion Bay, LA - The launch facility at Vermilion Bay, after seeing its seventy-fifth launch, was officially shut down for six months yesterday, after the last rocket for Louisiana Telecomm left the launchpad. Louisiana Telecomm is just the latest in a almost half a dozen users of the launch facilities at Vermilion Bay, the premier launch facility for the Federation. Louisiana Telecomm has put six satellites into orbit to increase broadcasting strength worldwide, as well as provide better services at home. Vermilion Bay has seen much wear and tear from the last seventy-five launches that have graced its three launching pads.

Launch Pad Two was shut down almost four months ago after heat-related stress on building materials had compromised some structural integrity for the large staging platform. Although it was not facing imminent collapse and probably could have waited the four months before a government-mandated shutdown of the facility for upgrades and refits, scientists and launch facility personnel thought it best to shut down the pad so as not to damage the platform any longer. The two other platforms have performed well since, and although there is no risk for any near-future collapses or reason for them, the government felt it would rather upgrade and maintain all of the platforms at once.

"It is the government's decision to work on the facility, and we respect that decision, we all want a safe working environment for all those who put our satellites and equipment into space," remarked Louisiana Telecomm's CEO, Paul Renoir, at a press conference. "Vermilion Bay has been good to us, they are always professional and have yet to have a safety mishap on the job, lets keep it that way with our most valued partner."

A rocket from Vermilion Bay, as seen from the nearby sport fishing port of Cypremort Point.

The Cajun Armed Forces has also remarked that the closure of Vermilion Bay will not compromise any facet of national defense, as the military has launched all of the satellites and equipment that was scheduled, before the refit began. The military was a very strong supporter and user of the Vermilion Bay facility, it also runs the nearby air base, aptly named 'Vermilion Bay Naval Air Station'. The military has noted it is lining up a new schedule of launches from Vermilion Bay when it reopens, but is content and able to run on the equipment it has already launched into space.

A statement last night by Prime Minister, Terrence Glenburn, commended the scientists and workers at Vermilion Bay for their clean and safe track record, and their pioneering spirit that has allowed the government and corporations of the Cajun Federation to be able to "reach for the stars". Glenburn's statement was echoed by Michelle Broussard-Doiron, in a written statement while she was in attendance overseas at a Ball in Austria. She also lauded the efforts of the launch facility for further developing the Federation's economy, as well as making it safer by improving early warning systems for the military, as well as developing high-resolution weather satellites and a new system for helping mariners stay alert for foul weather. The Lady Protector stated that Vermilion Bay set a "standard for all launch facilities to look up to, in its safe operating procedures and spotless track record" as a facet for economic development in space.
"As was stated a few months ago, the Cajun Federation recognized that there was a formal departure of ties to the Cajun-Athenian Mutual Defense-Aggression Pact, but these ties were never exclusively declared null and void and completely severed by the Athenian Federation. For that matter, after a couple months of reviewing our foreign policy, it is the choice of the Cajun National Congress, with the approval of the Council of Ministers, and the Lady Protector, that formal ties to this Pact be re-enacted and enforced.

We would like to call upon our old Athenian allies, if they so choose, to re-enact this pact, and see to it that our two glorious countries once again strong, capable, and close allies."
Press Release; Interior Ministry acknowledges existence of Intelligence Agency

Released photo of the headquarters of the Cajun Intelligence Agency, in Denham Springs, outside Baton Rouge.

The Interior Ministry, with the blessing of the Cajun National Congress, Council of Ministers, and the Office of the Lady Protector, released the official acknowledgement of existence of the Cajun Intelligence Agency, or CIA. While the existence of the CIA was a subject of rumor and speculation, especially over the expansive facility that it runs outside of Baton Rouge in Denham Springs, there was no public confirmation of what existed there. The Interior Ministry, who oversees the Internal Security Bureau, a branch of the Cajun Intelligence Agency, is considered to be the direct controllers of the CIA.

The Director of the CIA, whose name has yet to be released, answers to the Lady Protector and the Prime Minister, as well as the Council of Ministers. While funding for the Cajun Intelligence Agency has been a closely-guarded secret, a released confidential government spending report has noted substantial funding for the intelligence agency. While this has prompted some transparency watchdog groups to question whether this release is rather late, many leaders in the government believed that it was prudent to continue to allow only speculation and rumors of the existence of the Agency, until the time "was right".

The Lady Protector believed that she owed to the Cajun people the right to know about the intelligence agency, but she also concedes that a national government, for the better of the security of a nation, are allowed to keep some secrets from its people. A quick poll from last night garnered a sixty-six percent of respondants believing that Michelle Broussard-Doiron was correct in her assessment. Twelve percent believed that the government should allow for more transparency, while twenty-four percent were either not sure, or indifferent of the position made by the Lady Protector.

Weapons Smuggling Syndicate busted in Missouri

A large cache of heavy weapons, some of which were possibly destined for the failed revolt in Alexandria.

Fayetteville, AR - Questions from the Cajun Socialist Front over the validity of the Missouri Expedition were quelled yesterday after a massive release of evidence that was compiled before being released. In front of a massive pile of weapons, ranging from handguns to rocket-propelled grenades, Interior Minister Charles Doiron took questions and made a general statement, commenting on the mission to stabilize Missouri has garnered significant evidence to indict as many as two hundred and thirty-five people in charges ranging from illegal arms smuggling, and assisting in a revolt against the Federation's government. The Cajun Socialist Front did not comment on the press conference, which appeared to be aimed at opposition leaders who accused the Coalition, with the help of the Lady Protector, of trying to subtly continue the imperialist goals of Henri Broussard.

Prime Minister Glenburn, who was at the press conference but spoke only briefly, shot down accusations of these goals early during the expedition a few weeks ago. "The Federation of Columbia fell, we moved in to ensure a stable state to our north, nothing more, nothing less."

The Interior Ministry has revealed that it felt it was prudent to gather evidence of the arms trade that supplied many rebels with automatic and heavy weapons during the Alexandria Uprising, instead of releasing it in small bits. This allowed for the Interior Ministry to build a large case against two main families of arms smugglers; the Owens and Pattersons, whose families were at the head of the criminal underworld in Missouri. The last few weeks have seen an aggressive campaign of police and military raids on both families' storage facilities, associated businesses, homes, as well as the freezing of assets linked to their crime syndicates. The campaign nabbed almost all of the family members of both crime syndicates, as well as apprehending large numbers of conspirators and breaking down the crime network from the top down.

A Special Response Detachment from the Federation National Police after a raid on a residence of one of the Owens family members.

The Interior Ministry has already charged Yvette Owens and Louis "Shorty" Patterson with counts of providing assistance to treasonous activities, and are considering leveling an attempted murder charge to both, when they put out a call to the underworld to assassinate Henri Broussard for a bounty. The three weeks of police and military raids, many conducted by Group 62, have given plenty of evidence for prosecutors to work with. As many as fifteen-hundred assault rifles of various make and caliber were seized during the raid, as well as up to three hundred rocket launchers, including some models which may have been stolen for the Patterson syndicate by a quartermaster in the Cajun Ground Forces who was dealing in the black market.

"Our expedition to Missouri has garnered us some significant finds, and given us the evidence we need to legitimately say that this was a justified action," said Minister Doiron, speaking confidently.

Answering questions about a possible annexation of Missouri, Terrence Glenburne appeared dodgy on the subject, "For the moment, we are enforcing a military government over Missouri. Of course we have civilian advisory boards assisting that government. We expect that a decision on this matter could be forthcoming, however, in the next few weeks." Support in Missouri does appear high for such an annexation and integration into the Federation.
