Subject: Open Invitation to Military Exercise

Body:

The United Federation of the East would like to invite you to participate in a major strategic exercise of Pacific Power: Valiant Shield.

This exercise is scheduled to take place over Alaska, using most of the South Eastern Coast of the country, which is sparsely populated. A large amount of simulated targets have been built along with a highly trained 'Red Force'. This includes a coast heavily fortified by large naval guns and dug in artillery in mountainous territory, large amounts of cruise missiles and anti-ship ballistic missiles, an advanced SAM and air defense system, and a strong submarine attack force.

This exercise will culminate in a simulated attack by the enemy with chemical and biological weapons and a response with tactical nuclear weapons.

Portions of this exercise will feature live fire against simulated targets.
The Federation had dispatched its flag carrier the Triyun II, a powerful Imperator II Grand Carrier along with its sister ship the Sun Yat-sen to lead its flotilla. Escorting them were two Xia battleships, two littoral combat ships, three missile cruisers, and two destroyers. The fleet was assembling int two groups deploying from the UFE forward positions at Pearl Harbor and Guam. Additionally three Zheng He Class Command ships had been dispatched to increase situational awareness.

Joining them from the Fort Beihai forces was the Amphibious Carrier Tianjin and the two amphibious landing docks Taiyuan and Wuhan. Also adding to the amphibious landing craft were auxillary power projection landing ships PLA-CG-004-0013. Finally the UFE Mobile Offshore Base 002 had been moved from the Arctic Alaska southwards to participate in the exercise. 12 armored ground effect craft with amphibious forces were also present for the exercise. In total the United Federation boasted a full third of its amphibious forces along with significant landing assets for the aggressor 'Blue Team' forces.

Participating from the Air Force included the Ehestadt Strategic Air Wing, which was a combination of B-9 and Tu-160 S Bombers. Also from the air force 2 squadrons of F/A-47-Ds operating off the mobile offshore base.
Classified Dispatch to Exercise Participants:

Red Team is a rogue state controlled by an extreme nationalist regime, it is believed to be seeking the capability of acquiring a nuclear capability and has indicated in the past it has a very liberal thresh hold for utilizing these weapons. Possibly equally if not more disturbing is that it has announced capability to develop a biological weapons program. Further it has announced an extreme maritime border policy which involves closing off key shipping lanes and unprovoked attacks on civilian shipping.

These actions have severely undermined regional stability and constitute a threat to the Pacific.

Participants, be advised, Red Team is live forces, UFE Blue Team Field Commanders are unaware of force composition or position. This exercise will permit live heavy weapons fire against realistic targets. Please confirm with UFE National Command before expending live fire ordinance and do not deviate from areas designated as Fire Free Zones.

Live Fire of Depleted Uranium Rounds is not permitted in this exercise due to concerns of pollution to Alaskan Fisheries. All Alaskan civilian air and sea traffic will be suspended in the region for 3 days.

Key Force Intel:

Enemy is equipped with at least thirty high speed stealth missile patrol boats capable of launching cruise missiles.

Enemy has naval mine fields deployed near key "land able zones."

Enemy has advanced surface to air and surface to ship missiles.

Enemy has inland, short range WMD capable mobile ballistic missile launchers.

Enemy has low-mid fifth gen fighter capability, with estimated emphasis on light weight and mid weight fighters.

Enemy has a small but formidable force of attack submarines and possibly ballistic missile submarines with ASBMs.

Enemy ground forces are a mix of highly trained regulars in medium numbers, and large numbers of highly nationalist partisan irregulars. Natives are to be assumed hostile.

Two major urban simulated areas have been constructed to simulate realistic combat in urban setting, one is on the Coast City Alpha, one sixty miles inland. Both are heavily fortified.

Enemy has large concentrations of well hidden fixed artillery and anti-air capabilities.

Exercise starts with fleets positioned 300 nmi off the coast.
========================================================================

Warnings would blare across the multi-national fleet of ships as low level barrages of anti-ship cruise missiles came in seconds after the exercise was set to begin.

Rapidly feint signatures of reduced radar cross sections objects flying in patterns of fighter attack craft would come pouring in to all commands. A second salvo at 200 nmi was fired of air to ship super sonic missiles moving in a pattern resembling the Sunburn ASM, closing in rapidly and executing high gee turns at the end to evade missile and CIWS fire.

The primary targets of these attacks were the carriers of each group which gave off the largest signature.

All commands would be hit by a second punch at the same time, high powered radar emplacements positions on the mountains slightly inland were focusing their radar beams onto the enemy fleet, both to fry more sensitive systems and jam fleet defenses, but also were taking advantage of radar radar broad band information sharing to launch a tailored data stream cyber attack on each of the fleets.

The stealthy Type 022 fast patrol boats used the initial attack to move into position for their night time raid.

At the same time the Red Team fired high powered anti-satellite lasers up at the overhead satellites of the allied powers to blind them.

OOC: I'll type my blue team response up in my next post, my allergies are acting up a bit. Everyone assume about 80 highly maneuverable super sonic missiles are being used against your carriers. Missiles are live projectiles, but have duds in their warhead slots and are programmed to crash into the sea before they impact anything.

The Buryatia Navy Task Force immediately went to high alert, with all surface vessels activating their CIWS systems to counter the incoming missiles. Pacific Wolf Class Aircraft Carrier BNS Pacific Wolf also activated her twelve SeaRAM Point Defense Systems and eight Tactical Energy Laser Turrets and were ready to take down the incoming missiles. They moved into an open formation with the intention of each vessel having a clear field of fire.

As the missiles approached, all the vessels imediately began to open up on the missiles taking many of them down as each vessel's CIWS computer tracked them coming in. However Patriot Class Frigate BNS Devotion and Fearless Class Corvette BNS Protector were "hit" and would therefore play no further part in this phase of the exercise.

With the danger over, BNS Pacific Wolf launched all of her sixteen Sukhoi Su-33 Fighters which began to circle around the fleet, looking for enemy aircraft. At the same time, Eleven Fighter Squadron and Twelve Fighter Squadron consisting of twelve EF-50A Siberian Banshee Long Range Stealth Interceptor Fighters each also began to arrive after flying from Buryatia via Sakhalin.

Fleet Admiral Vito Canales stood on the bridge of the SS Manila as multiple alarms sounded and half a dozen computer screens lit up, splashing a cherry red glow across the officers seated at them. "Multiple launches detected, sir… Radar reports several hundred cruise missiles originating from ground launch points and aircraft within hostile territory. Seventy-five to eighty are on course for the 1st Carrier Group, the rest are split between allied fleets." An officer announced

"ETA on the missiles?" Admiral Canales asked.

"Less than ten minutes. Your orders, sir?"

"Bring the fleet to full combat readiness. Inform Manila that hostile forces have been encountered and advise a move from DEFCON 2 to DEFCON 1.

"Tell the picket F35s they're clear to engage the oncoming missiles at will, then fall back within 100nm of the fleet and begin the immediate launch of additional F35s to intercept the oncoming aircraft.

"Tell the Duwendes I want missiles falling out of the sky before they reach the 50nm mark; begin in immediate evasive maneuvers and engage with Aster 15s and Aster 30s as necessary.

"Draw the Polos into a defensive formation around the SS Manila: I want all CIWS's set for auto engagement and use SAMs as necessary to pick off the missiles. Save the P-500s for aircraft and ballistic missiles unless absolutely necessary.

"Tell our Sirenas to submerge immediately, and the Duwendes to begin anti-submarine sweeps. The full active sensor suite is authorized: I want to know of anything trying to enter combat range underwater, and I want it sunk," Admiral Canales paused as he watched the missiles approach on a radar screen.

"Yes, sir. F35s and Duwendes have begun targeting the lead missile."

Silence filled the bridge as small dots rose up onscreen from the Duwende Class Frigates' icons and darted toward the red oncoming missiles icons. Slowely at first, the oncoming missiles began to disappear.

"Sir, Manila acknowledges. The Central Government is now at DEFCON 1. I have an uplink established with control in Manila, they're monitoring our situation."

"Very good," Admiral Canales was interrupted by another officer.

"We're picking up heavy radar pulses from hostile territory. The Manila's primary radar is suffering minimal degradation; the Predator Cs and Duwendes are reporting a more significant impact on radar capacity."

"Slave the CIWS to our primary radar. Feed our Radar to Manila and send the coordinates to the Polos as soon as Manila identifies the radar jammer's location. The Polos are clear to engage the closest two with supersonic cruise missiles and forward the rest to allied forces as soon as we have them."

"Roger. Manila's reporting there may be a slight delay: primary satellites over the theatre are being targeted by lasers. They're reporting significant losses to visual surveillance capacity but say they'll have a workaround soon," an officer reported. (CLASSIFIED above the officer's clearance: Secondary stealth satellites in LEO are being brought online with passive sensors active.)

"Keep me updated," Admiral Canales replied.

OOC:
DD-112 SS Ekek was 'hit' by a missile and suffered significant damage taking its VLS offline.
DD-114 SS Sarimanok was 'hit' by a missile damaged by CIWS and has lost it's front AGS 155mm gun.

30 Selenarctan F35s are airborne to slow down the oncoming fighters and provide the ship-launched SAMs additional engagement time.

10 supersonic cruise missiles (duds) were launched towards the closest two radar-jamming emplacements (five missiles each) to probe defenses. The locations of all identified radar jamming station were forwarded to allied fleets.

As soon as the warning sounded, both task forces moved to high alert. Task Force Alpha, which arrived ahead of its OZ counterpart, was first in the line of fire. The time had arrived for the Vaulian Navy to show its mettle, or lack thereof.

As soon as the first of the anti-ship missiles were detected, defensive measures began. The BNS Ourumov (Aircraft Carrier) launched 2 squadrons of MiG 31 interceptors which raced off to target the missiles. The fighters would be the first line of defense for the Task Force. The battleships BNS Yekaterina and BNS Sofia would advance towards the incoming missiles. The battleships deployed their multilayered anti missile systems and attempted to take out any missiles which escaped from the MiG fleet.

The sudden cyber attack caught most of the fleet by surprise. The attack was surprisingly effective against the Frigates in the Task Force which had several systems crippled by the attack. The BNS Ourumov also fared badly with the loss of the main satellite link. In the first crucial minutes of the naval exercise, the Alpha Task Force was near to a state of disarray as officers rushed to find solutions against the cyber attacks.

As secondary satellites moved into position, RADAR stations based in Yuktobania and the BSN began providing targeting assistance to the task force. Wasting no time, the battleships would launch 4 CMs each towards any inland systems that were detected and deemed to be the source of the cyber attack.

As the dust settled, the BNS Ourumov was damaged by a single enemy missile which happened to make it through the multi-layered defense system. The crucial Aircraft Carrier was still functional and battle capable, but had registered significant damage which rendered parts of the flight deck unusable. The Frigates, which were severely damaged by the cyber attacks received multiple hits and were ‘destroyed’.

===BETA===

The OZ Commanded Task Force Beta, which remained some distance away from the main Task Force, had more time to prepare their defenses. The Aircraft Carrier BNS Natalya launched 3 squadrons of F-35 aircraft which moved to engage enemy fighters and to intercept incoming missiles. The Battleships BNS Mikhailov and BNS Gemini deployed their anti-missile systems to defend the carrier from any further strikes. The Beta Force Commanders had hoped that the unfortunate Task Force Alpha had borne the brunt of the missile strikes.

The two submarines BNS Caledonia and BNS Revolution immediately began to carry out anti-submarine maneuvers with the aim of flushing out any enemy subs in the area. The cyber attacks on the Task Force proved to be less effective than on their Alpha Force counterparts. While some systems on board each ship were directly affected, careful work by technicians managed to keep most systems at least 75% functional.

The loss of the satellite uplink hampered the Beta Force’s ability to make efficient use of their satellite guided weapons systems for quite some time as the backup satellite was maneuvered into position.

OOC: I kind of rushed writing this post, so I'll go back and edit as needed.

Like their counterparts in the task force surrounding them, the general quarters klaxons began sounding immediately when targets began lighting up. Crews went to high alert immediately, taking their battle stations as fast as they could. The LANDSCHKNECT Area Air Defense System, which most of the ships in the task force were equipped with, began interacting between all ships, which managed the entire SCNDF task forces' air defense assets. The system assigned targets to each ship, which was either fully equipped with the system, or had datalink upgrades that allowed it to take part in the air defense of the task force. The radar directed beams from the Red Team's mountain emplacements did not have as much effect on some of the systems of the LANDSCHKNECT system, especially the high-resolution optical cameras which could process millions of pixels quickly and focus in on horizon threats. The AESA radar systems, using a passive signature, would allow the ships to also locate inbound threats, and help the

Standard tactics put the task force in a loose diamond shape formation, with the carrier SCS Indomitable at the center of the formation, tailed by the new arsenal ship SCS Thunderer. The allocation and placement of ships allowed for almost anti-air CIWS systems to be brought to broadside against the oncoming targets, the frigates, destroyers, and littoral combat ships screened the main task force. These systems would be backed up by the systems on all the other ships in the task force, making for a formidable interlinked wall of lead, direct energy pulses, and missiles that would engage the missile threats.

The inbound anti-ship missiles would be engaged firstly by direct energy beams, fired from Thunderer, as well as the two amphibious landing docks, Persistence and Steadfast. These would be followed by RAM Bloc III anti-missile systems fired from launchers across the fleet, including a large salvo fired from the Thunderer. These highly maneuverable missiles would be able to engage most of the anti-ship missiles, and would be followed up by a huge barrage of lead from CIWS gun turrets across the fleet, which would hammer incoming missile threats, working independently to engage the threats using the LANDSCHKNECT system. Although the task force was hampered by the loss of the ability for 'lookdown' scans from satellites, the massive radar systems across the fleet would be more then enough to engage the threats.

Through the hailstorm of defensive weaponry, the missiles would score some hits on the fleet, one of which would put the amphibious landing dock Steadfast "out of commission" with a hit to the aft helicopter bay, and forcing her to exit the games with "critical" damage. Another missile would "strike" the destroyer Boomerang, which was deemed a "complete loss", and would exit the exercise as well. Following reports from the Selenarctos fleet of the location of the radar jamming stations, the attack submarines Canada and Jamaica would launch a salvo of their own missiles (OOC: Duds, of course), at the stations, launching a total of three missiles each.

The Indomitable's carrier air patrol would also brace for action with the report of inbound aircraft, and the Rafale and F-35C aircraft began to position themselves to defend the fleet as the task force prepared to launch surface to air weaponry.

The UFE taskforce's picket drone force saw missiles bearing in on all directions. While the incredible energy used on the UFE ships not yet converted to photonics had some effect, the drone force was still able to act as a redundant radar net. Their onboard AESA radars focused energy at the sunbursts knocking out severals guidance chips as they roared past towards the fleet. Wide area lasers fixed in on the targeting signals, as chemical energy lasers and hypersonic air to air missiles shot up intercepting them at 50 kilometers... more kills. The UFEs own command ships brought powerful radars to the fight not so easily jammed. Focusing the radar waves from two of these units on the missiles, they were able to continue jamming their lock on mechanisms and frying their circuitry. The third command ship was responding to the enemy's electronic and cyberwarfare in turn and coordinating enemy radar information back to the UFE's cloud computing systems elsewhere via secure broadband uplink.

The UFE Space Forces first S-1 space planes moved into position rapidly, using their integrated C4+ISR payloads to act in substitution for the satellites that were currently disabled. A second force of civilian space agency S-1s was dispatched to evaluate the satellites to improve their endurance in future conflicts.

The skies lit up as ETC CIWS guns and metal storm scatter weapons fired from across the fleet, downing one missile after another.

In the end four of the missiles managed to land against the UFE fleet. Projects were minor damage to the heavily armored Xia and significant damage to the frigate Lao.

Red team's defenses on land lit to life as missiles flew over the coast towards their targets. Automated but slightly antiquated AA guns in large concentrations complimented by SAMs of new and one generation legacy model fired off to intercept the incoming missiles. The AAs proved largely to be for impressive show but unable to intercept many missiles (as expected from such a doctrine employed by other nations). The SAMs raced in enjoying about a 35% kill advantage against the oncoming projectiles. Multiple radar stations were hit along with a few mobile launchers, though most mobile attack platforms had managed to get moving before they responded against.

Red team had a surprise though... the missile attack was merely a ruse, as all the radar and sensor units of the combined fleets turned on they would become easier to find. The attacking air wing was not a fighter force, but in fact made up almost entirely of unmanned aircraft. F-35s, Rafales, Su-33s, and Sinofighters were all getting lock on signals, as simulated older S-400 SAMs fired up from the coastline homing in on their targets. The Su-33s were not hard to find at all and the Rafales less so but still relatively easy, but the Sino-fighters and F-35s were primarily engaged by low frequency radars that had gotten locations of where to look from the drone force. Air units would be sent into a scramble as the fleets would be forced to coordinate the rapid evasive action of so many high speed jet aircraft from different countries in a single combat space.

Red team was not done yet though. The true force of aggressor aircraft was coming in fast below radar. A mix of 60 F-65 and 36 F-66 aircraft streamed across the skies. As the Su-33s had the weakest avionics and stealth of all the aircraft, the numerically inferior red team would let the SAMs moving against them do the job for them.

The F-65s while not completely stealth themselves were employing advanced jamming, supplemented by ECM pods. Their targets were the F-35s. Hitting their after burners, the force used the lock on data from the SAM radars to fire simulated AIMRAMs, at the Vauleyo and Selenarctos forces as they closed in to begin visual range combat, where the F-35s engines would be at a disadvantage to the F-65s powerful high output engines.

The F-66s meanwhile moved after the F-47s. The rivalry between the F-66 and F-47 pilots was the PLA equivalent of the Yankees and Red Socks. It was all the more intense because these particular units were F-66 air force pilots and F-47 navy pilots. The Sinos were both stealth and maneuverable, but the F-66 was more agile. Both units fired off their simulated AIMRAMs against one another with most of them being defeated by the other sides AESA radar. The units then moved to engage in dog fight and IR range. The Sinos had the upper-hand with a lower IR signature, but the F-66 enjoyed an advantage in thrust to weight and lower drag, giving it the edge with the gun.

While the air battle entered into full force, the naval battle was beginning as well. The smaller group of Selenarctros frigates was considered the easiest prey for the stealthy Type 022 patrol boats. A groups of eight of them fired a wave of 16 surface skimming super sonic missiles from 150 nmi.

This was followed on by a second group at 300 nmi also launching sixteen supersonic missiles at the frigate group. The main group meanwhile moved to engage the Burytia Fleet, thirty of the boats each fired off two supersonic surface skimming cruise missiles, with their targets being the carriers and landing ships.

Boagies appeared in space rapidly descending as SLBMs fired off from off the North Coast of Alaska. Forty MaIRV warheads (in reality duds, units hit will be told by the wargame simulation director) along with forty decoys descended downwards towards the fleet positions. The MaIRVs executed 10 gee plus manuvers on their descents to make engagement by long range missiles extremely difficult. Their targets were as followed: 8 against the UFE mobile offshore base, 4 against both UFE grand carriers, 4 against both Vauleyo Carriers, 4 against the Selenarctos carrier, 4 against the USC carrier, an addition 4 were used against the USC arsenal ship, 4 against the two Burytia battle cruisers.

The submarines moving to engage in anti-submarine operations were quickly picked up by the sonar listening posts strewn throughout the area. Hidden torpedo cells activated as submarines found waters littered with area denial weapons. Still no sign of an enemy sub force though...

In the sky the Blue Team's PLA Air Force units meanwhile took advantage of the ongoing battle to begin a low flight in with its B-9 strategic bombers. Working with the S-1 the B-9s were able to locate some of the possible ranges for enemy air fields, which seemed to be spread out. After receiving permission for live fire, the B-9s opened their bays firing off salvos of ER-M-51s with live warheads. The hasitly built simulated air fields were rapidly knocked out in the surprise attack, from only 200 nmi leaving missile defenses little time to respond. Eight more shots were simulated against radar towers, with missile defense simulations projecting a 40% efficiency rating.

The B-9s now had a problem though, as they moved to run out back to Transamur, a Squadron of F-65s at full afterburner were scrambled to go after them. With the carrier based fighter wings surpressed, the F-65 engagement would be left to the airforce. A request for aid was made for the EF-50s from Sakhalin to fly intercept.

OOC:

Summary of attacks for others to respond to:

Naval Battle:

16 Type 022 patrol boats are engaging the Selenarctos Frigates (2 warheads fired from each)
30 Type 022 patrol boats are engaging the Carriers and Amphibious ships of the Burytia navy (2 warheads fired from each)
8 ASBMs are engaging the Vauleyo Carriers
4 ASBMs are engaging the Selenarctos Carrier
4 ASBMs are engaging the Aussie Carrier
4 ASBMs are engaging the Aussie Arsenal ship

BNS Caledonia and BNS Revolution are both being attacked by about 6 underwater launched torpedoes (lock on on some of these is spotty).

The ASBMs were launched from a sub off the North Coast of Alaska.

Air Battle:

*note due to dangers of collision, all air to air projectiles are simulated rather than live fire.

All aircraft are being engaged by SAMs, stealth aircraft are being engaged by low frequency radar lock-ons.
All coalition aircraft must coordinate across commands to deal with a crowded sky and lots of fighters going evasive.
A group of hostile aircraft has attacked, they are 60 F-65s and are engaging everyone whose flying F-35s you can find theF-65s in this post. The UFE F-47 force is attacked by F-66s. The F-65s are basically piggy backing on ground radar's lock on to fire their own missiles on the F-35s while closing the distance to where IR lock on and visual range can occur.

Enemy radar effectiveness is about 60 percent atm.

Their attack subs have not yet shown themselves.

Pacific Wolf Class Aircraft Carrier BNS Pacific Wolf's twelve SeaRAM Point Defense Systems and eight Tactical Energy Laser Turrets once again opened fire downing one cruise missile which exploded just metres from the carrier. The second missile was hit by Stronghold Class Landing Ship BNS Bastion's two 30 mm AK-630 Air Defence Gun and debris thudded against the stern of the vessel.

The two Valour Class Battle Cruisers BNS Valour and BNS Courage fired every AA armament it had into the sky and even went into evasive manoeuvres. Both vessels received "a direct hit" and were out of this phase. The other two came crashing down causing major problems as debris rained everywhere.

The Su-33s immediately went into evasive manoeuvres, although five of the twelve were "shot down", in reality ordered to return to the carrier. The rest were ordered to land as they were outmatched by the enemy onslaught. The twenty four EF-50A Siberian Banshee Long Range Stealth Interceptor Fighters approached rapidly from the south west, completely to the enemy F-65s starboard side. They each then split into their two squadrons of twelve, the Eleven Fighter Squadron EF-50As dropping down before each firing three AAM-23 "Bullseye" Medium Range Air to Air Missiles at the F-65s. Meanwhile the Twelve Fighter Squadron EF-50As had taken station a few thousand feet higher and were ready to assist if called upon.
