AironthFlamewing
With the passage of Resolution #5 by the Town Council, A bill which expressly allowed for the exploration of the Antarctic continent in the hopes of claiming lands in the name of Torun. The local sailors and merchantmen whose ships dot the Vistula River have in a great fevered pitch of activity organized shipping for the government to use in their quest for the Antarctic. People of the World, Today the nation of Torun joins the ranks of the worlds more powerful regional powers. We have decided with the passage of a resolution to expand our influence in the world by developing a Cold Climate Research Station in Antarctica. Ships staffed by naval and governmental personnel have been dispatched and are making their way to the Antarctic regions.
Zoot Zoot
Wouldn't that be a breach of Holy American Imperial territory? Seeing as they hold Antarctica as protectorate n all.
AironthFlamewing
To the English Government. The Lands next to the Sri Lankan protectorate in Antarctica is free territory, in fact that is where the ships of the Torunian Expedition shall be headed in order to establish a base of operations and then a science facility. Kaiser Martens
Somewhat belatedly, an Icebreaker based at Niflheim goes join the Torunian expedition, wanting to ensure that they don't do anything stupid and get stuck and freeze. AironthFlamewing
According to the manifest of STNS (State of Torun Naval Ship) Orzeł, the journey to the Antarctic would take a matter of 20 days to complete. To keep the crew and scientists busy on the journey, sightseeing tours and data uplinks were set up to record any interesting finds that occurred along the route of the trip. OOC: In case people want to know this is what I'm going after the little peninsula next to Sri Lanka's Antarctic holdings Edited April 11, 2011 by graniteknight
Zoot Zoot
OOC That is all shadows land pal. It's just not been labelled. ICly Antarctica has no free land. The HAE, to our knowledge claims the southern wastes as protectorate territory.
Kaiser Martens
OOC: If it's not labelled then is he really at fault though?
AironthFlamewing
To the Government of the English We are claiming the peninsula as stated in the map transmitted above as a research station. It does not fall under any other nation's sphere or influence. Therefore, we are claiming it in the name of Torun.
Lynneth
OOC: Zoot, it's not Shadow's protectorate. The protectorate ends at the line to the lower left of that peninsula.
AironthFlamewing
After a long and arduous journey, The Orzeł and the ice breaker on loan from the Germans reached the Antarctic territories labelled on the map. The government of Torun was kept abreast of the constant travels and discoveries of the ships because of a satellite uplink that the ships had with the government. Realizing that there was no true place to "dock" the pair of nuclear powered ships took shelter in a little dug out cove that shielded them from the majority of the frigid temperatures and bad weather. Both ships had supply enough of food and water to last the first 4 months of an expedition and with the hopeful construct of a large airfield, more supplies would simply be sent by air. A contingent of Seabees from the Torun Military Command were ordered to start construction on a 10000 x 220 feet blue ice permanent runway which would service the supplying airplanes when they needed to land. Construction would also begin on "Classic American" Four Square style prefabricated homes which came in kits and simply had to be built by the Seabees and then connected to the generators which were also installed. Shadowsage
Holy American territorial integrity is only claimed as far as former Timuristan is concerned. The remaining territory is under imperial administration but only requires a claim filed to be granted.
AironthFlamewing
To the Government of the Holy American Empire- Considering the positions of our two governments and the fact that my government already has personnel in place and construction ongoing. We are claiming the regions of Antarctica that are specified on the maps provided in previous communications to the world. Kaiser Martens
Once that the Icebreaker finds it way, it deploys its own prefabricated units and several customized arctic construction machinery. Engineers do their work, explore the area and even get satellite pictures until they find the most stable and suitable area to create a runway, which will be needed, designed for large, cargo aircraft. AironthFlamewing
The runway construction is progressing ahead of schedule with the Seabee battalions from the city of Torun working hard and fast towards getting the job done. They have selected a located of “blue”/permanent ice upon which to build the runway. C-130 proof roller compacting the snow on runway site As it is essential to compact every square centimetre of the runway surface to ensure bonding and a smooth level surface, each section of the runway area had to be passed over with special rollers seven times with varying weights, speed and tyre pressures. Each rolling process comprised 20 passes with the machine, with a consolidation period of 24 hours between each complete roll. This would be a time consuming and painstaking process at the best of times, but in Antarctic conditions of high winds, below freezing temperatures and often poor visibility and whiteout, it was an outstanding feat! The new runway construction machinery which was recently shipped from Torun has now arrived at Research Station Torun(RST) on the Grand Torun, a large cargo container and will soon be in operation at the runway site. The range of new machinery, in particular the new rollers, will reduce the number of passes which would have been necessary with the old machinery from 20 to just five, and so will greatly expedite the process. As Runway Construction Supervisor and Seabees Commandant Matt Ford commented, “It is as if we now have a well-stocked toolbox, whereas before we were working with just a hammer!” Now that the variables of the conditions and situation are better understood, and with the outstanding success of the trial snow pavement process behind them, RST staff will now work to validate the site location by the end of the season to make sure that the preliminary rollings conducted now would hold under pressure. The runway itself will be completed very quickly within the next few months. (OOC: Friday/Saturday ish)
PresidentDavid
OOC: Got permission from Michi. IC: Three C-130s from the United States were sent to the territory and future sight of the Township's facility. One C-130 had three regiments from the Army Corps of Engineers and the other C-130 contained the materials to make three small wind turbines that could help provide electricity for the Antarctic facility and help keep everyone warm. The third C-130 consisted of a few vehicles that could help move the turbines to the needed area. The men para-trooped two hundred yards from where the other men were and had a flag barrier brave the antarctic cold in front of them to show they were friends and not enemies. They were ready to work.
AironthFlamewing
When the USI Engineers were ordered to set to work on the turbine construction to supplement the gas generators which were currently powering the temporary building and also the few constructed "Foursquares" that were available for sheltering the men. Completion of those projects would not take that much time as the only difficult part of the endeavor would be laying the electric lines under the ice securely enough so that they would not be damaged. OOC: Now you can have control of them back PD, just wanted to give the orders out Edited April 12, 2011 by graniteknight
PresidentDavid
The young blond commander of the three regiments accepted the requests and got directly to work finishing the homes and setting up their turbines. The United States flag was firmly planted next to one of the homes as the Commander himself began to put the building together. A few boxes of flairs and freeze-dried food were stored in some of the homes and other supplies such as shovels were brought in chests to stay outside.
